Palm's Ares SDK goes to public beta
After a brief private testing period, Palm's interesting Ares software development package has made its way into a public beta phase. Breaking tradition from Mojo -- Palm's other webOS SDK -- the big news with Ares is that the dev environment is fully web-based with no additional tools needed for apps to get whipped into reality. Intel ships mobile Core i5, i3 to PC builders
Intel this afternoon revealed that it has already started shipping the processors it plans to unveil at CES. Highlighted in the pack are its mobile Core i3 and i5 processors: the first notebook chips based on its year-old Nehalem architecture, the dual-core parts are not only faster than the outgoing Core 2 Duo at a given clock speed but are also the first Intel chips of any kind to integrate the graphics into the main processor. Palm loses $85.4 million in latest reported quarter -- hey, it's an improvement
We don't know just how quickly Palm (or Elevation Partners, for that matter) thought it'd become profitable following the release of webOS, but it's not there quite yet -- the company is in the process of outing its earnings for the second quarter of fiscal year 2010 right now, and in a word, they're still in the red. The good news is that it's a marked improvement from last quarter -- they've gone from a $164.5M GAAP net loss to an $85.4M one this time around. Twelve South, Booq release new MacBook accessories
Booq and Twelve South have each launched new MacBook accessories: the Mamba Shift bag, and the SurfacePad keyboard cover. The Mamba Shift uses a ballistic nylon exterior with water-repellent coating, and interior ripstop lining. The notebook compartment holds 13- or 15-inch systems, with two removable padded inserts for extra protection. Primary and side compartments are meant to store books and accessories. No monkeys time time, but LaCie has just announced new storage option that should get folks plenty excited on its own: a new dual-drive 2Big USB 3.0 RAID drive developed in partnership with Symwave. As you've no doubt been able to surmise by now, this thing is big and fast, with it able to support up to 4TB of storage, and provide a peak burst read transfer speed of 275MB/s thanks to a new dual SATA and RAID bridge controller developed by Symwave. LaCie today collaborated with Symwave to showcase a version of the former company's 2Big RAID 0/1 drive that uses the SuperSpeed USB 3.0 standard to deliver burst read speeds as fast as 275MBps. Intel Core i3, mobile Core i5 processors coming January 7
Intel's Arrandale chips haven't been the best-kept secret around, and today Chipzilla made 'em official: the Core i3 and mobile Core i5 will launch on January 7, and we'd guess a bunch of new machines come along for the ride. Although the desktop Lynnfield Core i5 is a quad-core, both the new Core i3 and mobile Core i5 are dual-core -- and in a first for Intel, both of the new chips have an integrated GPU core that's being branded "Intel HD Graphics." Android, iPhone in dead heat for demand
Apple and Google are in a near-even race for smartphone demand, according to a new comScore study. Among those Americans looking to buy a smartphone between November and February, 20 percent are planning to get an iPhone 3G or 3GS while 17 percent plan to get some form of Android phone. Both audiences are more likely to buy a high-end device: about 14 percent of the entire group intend to buy an iPhone 3GS, while 8 percent expect to buy a Motorola Droid.

Bluetooth group adopts low-energy standard
The Bluetooth Special Interest Group this afternoon formally adopted the Bluetooth low energy standard. The technology is designed to let devices consume as little power as possible by using very short bursts of data and, when in the mode, running at a peak 1Mbps. While slow, the standard is efficient enough that a device with watch batteries could run its wireless signal for "years" before it needs a replacement.

Live Interior 3D 2.3 adds roof creation, new materials
BeLight has launched an update to its home and interior design software, Live Interior 3D 2.3. The app offers 2D drawing tools for creating floor plans, and 3D objects which can be used in office, house and apartment walkthroughs. Version 2.3 adds a new roof creation feature with over 200 materials, and an assistant which inserts roofs automatically. Also present are new foundation thickness and elevation parameters.

BlackBerry faces outages, forced Bing search
Research in Motion encountered major setbacks today after it confirmed an ongoing, widespread failure in its e-mail system. A BlackBerry Information Service (BIS) outage is leading to stalled e-mail at most North American carriers for individual users. Company representatives say the problem is being addressed but don't yet have a timeframe for when the issue should be fixed.

We've seen UAVs that hover in the past, but if you're looking for something that eschews rotors for nearly silent ducted fans, you'll need to get your hands on the cyberQuad by Cyber Technology. Second Fuse UI video shows wild, dynamically lit 3D interface
We only got the briefest of glimpses at the new UI approach in Synaptics' collaborative Fuse concept handset, and now TAT (The Astonishing Tribe, the folks behind the original Android UI), has posted a brief clip that gives a better idea of the full UI. It's pretty wild, with some sort of rendering engine that really emphasizes depth, lighting and motion. AT&T dismisses tiered data chatter?
AT&T has dismissed speculation it intends changing the way it charges iPhone users for data plans on its service, but hopes to encourage customers to use other methods to get their data in future.
“We have not made any decision to implement tiered pricing," AT&T Mobility Chief Executive Ralph de la Vega told the Wall Street Journal, dismissing speculation the company already has plans in place to introduce banded prices for data use on its network.
It appears the company is also exploring technological solutions designed to reduce the load on its existing cellular coverage, including tests of 3G femtocells, an expansion in available WIFi hotspots and (we hear) investment in developing and tweaking existing technologies to meet the iPhone

Gonna be a long day for BlackBerry users: RIM's confirmed to multiple outlets that its BIS servers are acting up and that email services are being delayed -- and we're actually hearing that they're just down, period. Apple refurbs: 27-inch iMac now available
This week the 27-inch iMac hit the refurb. shelf at Apple's online store. The 3.06Ghz model with 4GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive has been reduced from $1699 to $1449, a price drop of $250. The previous-generation 24-inch iMac with the same configuration is also available for $100 less, $1349, after a massive $850 price cut. A 21.4-inch iMac is also featured with the same configuration as well for $1299.

AT&T downplays worries of tiered 3G pricing
AT&T tried to allay fears of mobile data price changes late Wednesday in a brief discussion of the company's plans (subscription required). Wireless CEO Ralph de la Vega is adamant that the carrier has "not made any decision" about introducing tiered pricing that would charge customers for more bandwidth. Popular Science publisher Bonnier and the design group Berg today showed Mag+, a new magazine concept designed for an expected wave of tablets from Apple and others (video below). Kindle is 'iPod of the book world' - Citigroup
Amazon’s Kindle has, “definitively established itself as the iPod of the book world,” writes Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney.
Mahaney has numerous nuggets of data to offer on the giant online retailer in a note distributed to clients offering his recommendation to buy shares in the company, with a price target that’s up $30 to $170 per share.
The analyst cites his own research which suggests accelerating online retail sales this season, with Amazon gaining online share and experiencing accelerating visitor traffic to its site.

NVIDIA on Wednesday confirmed the development of a sequel to its Ion chipset but set expectations for its release. Calling it only the "next-generation Ion," representatives explained during a conference call that the hardware is in progress but won't be formally unveiled at CES next month. Iraqi insurgents using $26 software to monitor Predator video feeds
We can't say we've ever heard of a $26 Russian program called SkyGrabber before, but it's about to get famous real fast -- according to the Wall Street Journal, Iraqi insurgents have been regularly using the satellite-snooping software to monitor live Predator video feeds. Apparently the Predator transmits video over an unencrypted link, so there's no major hacking or security breach going on here, but it's obviously a huge issue -- and we'd say the bigger problem is that Pentagon officials have known about this flaw since the 1990s, but they didn't think insurgents would figure out how to exploit it. Digital Storm's gaming rig shows that Core i5 can trump i7
Since the dawn of computing, gamers on a budget have been flaunting their ability to best higher-spec'd systems courtesy of a little extra cooling and a lot of time fiddling with BIOS settings. So, no real surprise here that an Intel Core i5 processor can keep up with a Core i7 when properly configured. What is surprising is that you can get one suitably configured with a warranty. The provider in this case is Digital Storm, the system is the Core i5-750, and the warranty is three years. Videolan.org: Mediaplayer VLC für Mac vor dem Aus
Der sehr beliebte und zu den meisten Videoformaten kompatible OpenSourceMediaplayer “VLC” steht vor dem Aus, auf dem Mac weiterentwickelt zu werden.
Einer der Projektbetreiber, Rémi Denis-Courmont schreibt dazu in einem Forenbeitrag, die Situation sei nun kritisch und der 64bit Player-Version sei erstmal verschoben worden. Philadelphia wants to buy Earthlink's former hardware, keep municipal WiFi dream alive
It never came to pass. Philadelphia's city-wide WiFi plan was announced in 2006 and then, after struggling on for two years, died when Earthlink decided it wanted nothing to do with muni wireless. A private company called NAC bought the hardware last year and now the city wants to buy it from them for $2 million. The Mayor's Office pledges to "provide free internet in targeted public spaces," which is somewhat less aggressive than the previous city-wide reach, but ditching the $20/month that Earthlink was

IDC speculates Windows 7 will be last PC OS from Microsoft
Windows 7 will be Microsoft’s last full Windows client upgrade, with operating systems and data moving increasingly into the cloud amid seismic shifts in the computing world, say the analysts at IDC.
Analyst Al Gillen says Windows 7 shows an important moment in the evolution of computing, publishing this notion in IDC’s end-of-year list of predictions for the coming technology years.
Gillen says Windows 7 will be the “last really big refresh, en-masse, of the Windows client environment as we have known it for the last decade”.

IDC erwartet zweistelliges Wachstum des PC-Markts
Die Marktforscher von IDC rechnen einer schnellen Erholung des PC-Markts. Bis 2013 soll die Branche Wachstumsraten im zweistelligen Bereich verzeichnen. Blu-ray 3D video spec finalized
The Blu-ray Disc Association today published details of the final specification for 3D-enhanced Blu-ray video. Simply titled Blu-ray 3D, the format will send a stereoscopic 1080p image but, despite the extra data, will only use about 50 percent more data than a traditional, 2D-only image. The relatively efficient storage is helped by an efficient variant of the H.264 video code known as Multiview Video Coding (MVC) that is also backwards-compatible with 2D devices.

Google plans own Chrome OS netbook, what will Apple and Microsoft do?
Google’s becoming ever more active of late, developing its own-branded Android smartphone and introducing that mobile OS to other manufacturers - now, TechCrunch is claiming, the company intends introducing its own own-branded Chrome OS netbook.
Google’s plans for the Nexus One smartphone emerged early in the week. Setting out its argument, TechCrunch observes these notes from the Chrome OS FAQ:
“The Google Chrome OS team is currently working with a number of technology companies to design and build devices that deliver an extraordinary end user experience. Die schiessen in Finnland (ja, die spinnen die Finnen) Mitarbeiter mit klingelnden Namen aus Kanonen gegen eine Monsterglocke um den schönsten Intel-Jingle der Welt zu erzeugen. So jedenfalls die Geschichte, denn das Werbevideo wurde natürlich von professionellen Stuntmen gedreht. Wusste gar nicht, dass es in Finnland soviel Stuntmen gibt. Google may extend its plans for self-designed hardware to include a netbook running Chrome OS, a rumor claims today. Just as the Nexus One is poised to serve as a showcase for Android, the company is believed by more than one source to be talking to a PC builder to complete a Chrome OS netbook based on its specifications. Das war ja nur eine Frage der Zeit. ASUS entwickelt Roboter für den täglichen Gebrauch Android-Roboter. Und die Kinder sollen die ersten Betatester werden. Im Bildungsbereich sollen die androiden Androids zunächst eingesetzt werden, mit Sprach-, Video- und Navigations-Features ausgestattet. Android als OS muss dafür amtlich modifiziert werden und genau da sind die Entwickler gerade dran. Vielleicht würde Android diesem Kumpel auch gut tun?

Apple patent reveals 3D computing plan...
Look forward to ever-more immersive media experiences on Apple products, with the company’s latest to emerge patent filing describing a means by which to create 3D displays in which users get to look around objects in their field of view.

O2 stellt nationales Roaming über T-Mobile im Januar ein
Telefónica O2 Germany will in Kürze einen milliardenschweren Netzausbau und -umbau fertigstellen. Ab dem 5. Sprücheklopfer: Die Shirts der CHIP Online Kollegen
Seit Kurzem haben wir eine Facebook-Fanpage und was dort als kleiner Spaß begann, hat innerhalb kürzester Zeit eine ganz eigene Dynamik entwickelt: Ein paar harmlose Fotos der mal sinnfrei mal tiefsinnig bedruckten T-Shirts der Kollegen sorgten dafür, dass sich manch einer inzwischen zweimal überlegt, was er auf die Arbeit anzieht.

Bericht: Nvidia präsentiert im Januar neue Tegra-Generation

GenevaSound S: auch kleine Brüder lassen den iPod ordentlich rummsen

Mit dem Modell "S" will GenevaSound den Consumer-Markt erobern. Macht ja auch Sinn bei einem iPod-Dock. Das 600-Watt-System "XL" sprach da noch eine andere Sprache, war aber auch mit 2000 Dollar entsprechend teuer. Zu teuer für viele. Natürlich muss man bei der neuen, kleinen Variante Kompromisse machen. Mit nur noch zwei Lautsprechern und auf entsprechend weniger Platz dürfte das nicht mehr so sensationell klingen, schlecht wird es aber bestimmt nicht. 300 Dollar ist doch auch deutlich realistischer für ein Dock, oder?

Blu-ray 3D specifications finalized, your PS3 is ready
In case plans by AMD and a slew of other tech vendors planning to showcase 3D Blu-ray compatible products at CES wasn't a tip-off, the updated specifications are done. The key details? First, that the Blu-ray Disc Association has chosen the Multiview Video Coding (MVC) codec to store 3D, so that even though it is now providing a full 1080p frame for each eye, it will only require about 50% more storage space compared to the 2D version, and all discs will be fully backwards compatible, in 2D, on existing players.

In einem veröffentlichten Patentantrag beschreibt Apple neue Gesten zur Steuerung von 3D- und 2D-Ansichten. Dabei wird die Position des Benutzers vor dem Computer interpretiert. McDonalds bietet in den USA kostenlosen WLAN-Zugang an

Apple has released Digital Camera Raw Compatibility Update 2.7, software that extends RAW image compatibility for selected Canon and Nikon cameras and Aperture 2, iPhoto ’08 and iPhoto ’09.
The software introduces RAW support for six cameras:

Canon PowerShot G11,
Nikon D3S,

Wii Fit found to have 'little effect' on family fitness level, boredom seems to be the main culprit
In a new study conducted by Scott Owens out of the University of Mississippi, the Wii Fit was loaned to eight families and the usage and fitness impact was tracked over time -- three months before they got the Wii, and three months after. The verdict? "No significant changes" in family fitness from the Wii. Interestingly, over the period of three months the daily Wii Fit usage declined a staggering 82 percent, from 22 minutes a day for the first half of the time all the way down to an average of four minutes a day for the last six weeks. ComScore: iPhone overtakes Windows Mobile use for the first time in US
There are plenty of ways to measure smartphone marketshare. IDC measures units shipped from manufacturers whereas Gartner measures units sold to consumers. Then there's comScore, the research firm that conducts monthly surveys in the US to measure the total number of devices (and thus operating systems) currently in use. Its latest data is summarized above for the three-month period ending in October. See those yellow lines? AMD to Launch 12 Cores CPU in March 2010
One of the reasons that might have pushed Intel to speed up the release of its six cores Xeon was most likely the forthcoming race with AMD, and the aim to be the first one to introduce such multicores CPU on the market for early 2010.Indeed, AMD does not plan to let Santa Clara's Giant to define the rules of the game alone and will launch in March a CPU featuring 12 cores and dedicated to servers. The maximal frequency of such Opteron will be around 2.4 GHz, allowing a comfortable TDP of 140 W. So, AMD will release them not so far after the first six cores Xeon from Intel, both CPU targeting similar market niches, servers and workstation.If there is currently no chance that AMD CPUs end in a Mac, nevertheless there is always a good point of having competition as it will force Intel to keep innovating while reducing prices of its CPU, and potentially prices of our Macs.

FTC Accuses Intel of Unfair Competition in USA
After the European Commission, and the State of New York, the well known federal US authority, the Federal Trade Commission decided to look closer at Intel's business strategies and practices. Without much surprise, as it was based on similar document already quoted by the European Commission in EU, the FTC decided to sue Intel, accusing the chip maker of using its dominant market position “to stifle competition and strengthen its monopoly". In the document, the FTC accuses Intel for having systematically blocked its rivals (mostly AMD) from selling their CPU by different strategies aiming to limit their access to the market.
Unlike the EC charges and complains from the State of New York mostly targeting Intel's monopoly based on rebates and co-marketing arrangements to persuade computer makers to use its CPUs instead of those from AMD, FTC complaints go beyond the CPU-centri

Widget Press has launched a new form-based application development tool, FormEntry 1.0 for Mac. The software is claimed to allow developers of any skill level to create form-based iPhone apps. The company also offers a complementary FormEntry iPhone app, which works in conjunction with the desktop utility. GenevaSound S stuffs 'hifi' and 'pretentious' into smaller $299 box
We loved the original Geneva Sound System XL, if for nothing other than the sheer audacity of it, though we hear it made some pretty good noise to boot. But if you don't have $1,999 to drop on an iPod dock, the new GenevaSound S brings things into the realm of possibility with a street-style $299 pricetag. Of course, with only two speakers under the hood and not as much room (or power) to stretch those bass-ey legs, we'll have to see just if the dock can measure up to its hyperbole when we get a chance to take a listen. Outside of swearing up a storm on a Twitter app, there aren't many better ways to announce your presence on a new Android device than the comforting song selections of well-curated Pandora station. Raytheon's iPhone app will track enemy combatants in real time
Raytheon, known more often than not in these parts for its ability to zap people at a distance with microwaves, has just announced a little something called One Force Tracker. Essentially an iPhone app, it leverages recent developments in location awareness and social networking to keep tabs on both friends and enemies in the field, displaying positions on maps in real time -- all the while enabling secure communications between soldiers. Continental Airlines today set out more concrete plans for its in-flight Wi-Fi service. Pushed back from its original January 2009 target, the service is now due to launch in spring aboard 21 Boeing 757 airliners. Most of these will be present on domestic flights, the transport service says.

iMac 27" LCD Panel: Dell Might Get it Soon Too
The panel used in the iMac 27" has impressed most of the customers and Pro users who have been able to look at it and work on it, beside its impressive 2560x1440 resolution with such size, LED backlighting also offers great brightness and color rendering. For the moment, no other companies have been able to put its hands on this panel, but this could change in coming weeks. According to some information leaking from Dell, there are some references to a forthcoming display known as U2711 and offering the same 2560x1440 resolution. According to history of Dell displays, we should then access to a good quality display similar to the one experienced with the iMac 27", with as much as or even more features for connecting peripherals or devices at a lower price. Google puts Android at 16,000 apps
Google on Wednesday acted on claims that Android had broken the 20,000 app mark with a correction. Following a third-party tracker's claims, the search firm now says that Android Market has just over 16,000 apps as of today. It also tells TechCrunch that it doesn't disclose the ratio of free to paid apps but stops short of either confirming or denying the roughly 62/38 percent bias towards free apps.

Verizon tests 10Gbps FiOS backbone
Verizon teased the long-term future of its FiOS service today by confirming that it's the first to test a new form of passive fiber optic network that could dramatically increase the practical speeds of its Internet access. Called XG-PON, the test service has been shown running through a test FiOS home at up to 10Gbps downstream, or about four times faster than the existing 2.5Gbps infrastructure. Uploads are about twice as fast at 2.4Gbps versus 1.24Gbps on today's hardware.

Zune HD Twitter app now live
It was a slow rollout today, but the promised Zune HD Twitter app is now live in Marketplace. We've been playing with it a little since we got it, and while it's definitely one of the more attractive mobile Twitter clients we've come across, it's also distressingly laggy: it's stalled out several times just scrolling a list of tweets, button presses go ignored, and refreshing data seems to cause all sorts of consternation -- it's cause our Zune to drop its WiFi connection several times. Not sure what's going on with that, but we've definitely seen some far more polished apps running on the Zune, so we're hoping these glitches get cleaned up soon.
