Epson has released an iPhone app that allows photo printing via a Wi-Fi connection. The Epson iPrint lets users send photos stored on the phone to any network-capable Epson printer.

TransGaming to port Dragon Age: Origins to Mac
TransGaming will soon release a Mac port of Dragon Age: Origins, the company has announced. Originally developed by BioWare for the PC, Xbox 360 and PS3, players control one of several characters warring against a Darkspawn assault on the kingdom of Ferelden. The title attempts to recapture the feeling of earlier BioWare role-playing games, such as Baldur's Gate, with an emphasis on detailed combat, party management and a core quest that should last more than 50 hours.

DRO preps carbon fiber notebook case

OS X 10.6: Wenn die F8-F12 Tasten nicht funktionieren - Fix
Mit Mac OS X 10.6 hat Apple einen Fehler eingebaut, welcher manchmal den Gebrauch der Funktionstasten F8-F12 nicht möglich macht. Diese funktionieren dann von jetzt auf gleich nicht mehr.
Um sicherzustellen, ob man davon betroffen ist, kann mit Hilfe des Programmes Konsole (Programme/Dienstprogramme/Konsole.app) nach “BUG” gesucht werden. Dazu links in der Liste der möglichen Logs “libdispatch” auswählen und nach dem Begriff suchen.
Falls folgende Zeile zu finden ist, kann man den nachfolgenden Tipp nutzen:

University of Antwerp stuffs 13 GPUs into FASTRA II supercomputer
The researchers at the University of Antwerp's Vision Lab caused quite a stir last year when they built a supercomputer with four high-end NVIDIA graphics cards, but it looks like they've truly stepped up their game for their followup: a supercomputer that packs no less than thirteen GPUs. That, as you might have guessed, presented a few new challenges, but after wrangling some flexible PCI cables into a specially-made case and loading up a custom BIOS courtesy of ASUS, they were apparently able to get six dual-GPU NVIDIA GTX295 cards and one single-GPU GTX275 card up and running with only a few hiccups. V-Ray engine to come to SketchUp for Mac
Visual Dynamics has uncovered plans to bring the V-Ray rendering engine to the Mac edition of SketchUp, Google's 3D modeling tool. SketchUp is oriented towards object and architectural design, and can import and export using a variety of formats, or else tap into a library of free models. The V-Ray engine improves on the visual quality of SketchUp output, supporting techniques such as high dynamic range (HDR) and per-material global illumination.

Samsung to intro tablet PCs, make all monitors LED backlit
Samsung will enter into a new product niche for the company in the new year with the introduction of tablet PCs, according to a Monday Current report. At the same time, the maker will also bring more 3D computing solutions, as well as integrate LED backlight technology into all of its PC monitors before the end of next year. Samsung Australia IT product marketing manager Emannuele Silanesu also revealed that the company is planning on releasing multi-touch monitors and notebooks.

Chevy outfits cars with 3G-to-Wi-Fi hotspots
Chevrolet today became the latest automaker in the US to add roving Internet access to its vehicles. The Avalanche, Equinox, Express, Silverado, Suburban, Tahoe and Traverse all now have an after-sale option of an Autonet router that provides a 1.5Mbps connection even at speed. Like the Chrysler option, it accomplishes the feat by sharing a 3G link over a local Wi-Fi hotspot that shares the connection with passengers and those within a 150-foot radius.

Nokia Messaging for social networks hits beta, brings Twitter, and leaves out the N900
See, this is what we were saying. It's not that we're not excited about Maemo, or that we hate S60, or even that we dislike it when a company like Nokia builds a free messaging app that integrate social networks like Facebook (and now Twitter) into the handset experience. It's just that Nokia has just built an app that only works on the N97, N97 Mini and the 5800, leaving the company's quasi-flagship handset the N900 out in the cold. Nexus One to be subsidized after all?
Another leak today suggests the Nexus One may not be limited to an unsubsidized, unlocked model after all. Claiming an unidentified source, Reuters says T-Mobile will still discount the high-end Android phone for those who sign up for a contract. However, it would also sell directly through the Google website and could be available as early as January 5th, just ahead of CES.

Google Phone hits FCC
Engadget put gallery of images of the Google Phone, aka Nexus One on its site over the weekend.
Speculation and chatter regarding the company’s device has been firing up across the Web across the weekend just gone. The device apparently runs the Android 2.1 OS, which offers new 3D elements in the Apps stray, more homescreens and a new grid icon which raises mini previews of all homescreen pages.
As pictured, the Google Phone is running on the T-Mobile network and is also using WiFi. Engadget reports the device to be “incredibly thin and sleek”, with four buttons and a volume control. The device also lacks a logo for HTC, the company thought to be manufacturing the device.

Microsoft mobile chief 'We're still playing catch-up' - with Apple
Apple scored a home run with the iPhone, and rivals are still struggling to catch-up, even while Google’s Android OS poses an additional threat to former smartphone industry leaders.
Microsoft’s UK head of mobile, Phil Moore, had some interesting reflections on the iPhone, telling attendees at the ‘Connect!’ tech summit in London:
"We’re still playing catch-up. When Apple came on to the scene a couple of years ago, it threw away the rulebook and reinvented it. We unfortunately don’t have that luxury. It’s true, Apple caught us all napping. It launched something that was very iconic, new and unseen with a very good user interface."

Bell, Telus network upgrades afflicting Bell iPhone reception?
Network conflicts may be the culprit for recent reports of iPhone reception problems in Canada, as other carriers begin to install “dummy” HSPA towers, reports The iPhone Blog.
A rep from Canadian iPhone carrier, Rogers Canada, told a customer that reception problems may be attributable to Bell and Telus who have recently begun upgrading their network.
“It is probably due to the new HSPA towers being put up by other carriers that is interfering with your signal,” the rep is alleged to have said.

Apple shipping 10 million iPhones this quarter?
A rush of orders with chipmakers may lead Apple to ship more than 10 million iPhones per quarter for the first time, a study from Taiwan's Market Intelligence & Consulting Institute. The analyst group notes that the deliveries of chips needed for smartphones shot up 30.9 percent from spring to summer and expects much of that to translate into iPhone shipments as Apple will have queued up its shipments for the fall. Synaptics demos handset with grip sensors, more
Synaptics on Monday revealed a concept phone design that shows input methods beyond touchscreens. The Fuse, co-designed by TheAlloy and The Astonishing Tribe, has a multi-touch capacitive screen but also embeds grip and touch sensors on the sides that can recognize when the phone is squeezed or touched beyond its display. It would even have basic touch control from the back of the phone to provide control without blocking the screen itself.

Westmere-EP kommt im März 2010

NEC intros energy-efficient, short-throw projectors
NEC Display on Monday added two new projectors to its NP series of short-throw devices, including the NP510WS and the NP610S. Meant for classrooms and conference rooms that are small and don't have the space for a contemporary projector, the NP510WS is widescreen while the NP610S uses a standard aspect ratio. Either, however, has environmentally-friendly features meant to expand the life of the projectors. An ECO Mode will let the lamp last for up to 5,000 hours, while power consumption and noise levels (29dB) are kept low.

Cowboys Stadium 3D scoreboard experiment doesn't go so well, turned off in less than seven minutes
You know 3D has a long way to go when even Jerry Jones can't manage to sell it for longer than seven minutes: the vaunted real-time 3D scoreboard display experiment at last night's 'boys / Chargers game was turned off to loud cheers after just six minutes and fifty seconds of being active. The problem, as usual, was glasses: most of the 80,000 people in attendance didn't bother to put on the headgear required to see the 3D effect, and instead saw a blurry anaglyph image -- which they then booed. AT&T taking blame for Apple's iPhone problems?
The iPhone hardware may be to blame for American users' connection problems, not AT&T, says the senior VP for telecommunications research at Nielsen, Roger Entner. The executive claims that the device has problems with the chipset connecting it to cellular towers, hurting both voice and data reliability. Bell, Telus network upgrades afflicting Bell iPhone reception?
Network conflicts may be the culprit for recent reports of iPhone reception problems in Canada, as other carriers begin to install “dummy” HSPA towers, reports The iPhone Blog.
A rep from Canadian iPhone carrier, Rogers Canada, told a customer that reception problems may be attributable to Bell and Telus who have recently begun upgrading their network.
“It is probably due to the new HSPA towers being put up by other carriers that is interfering with your signal,” the rep is alleged to have said.

Microsoft mobile chief 'We're still playing catch-up' - with Apple
Apple scored a home run with the iPhone, and rivals are still struggling to catch-up, even while Google’s Android OS poses an additional threat to former smartphone industry leaders.
Microsoft’s UK head of mobile, Phil Moore, had some interesting reflections on the iPhone, telling attendees at the ‘Connect!’ tech summit in London:
"We’re still playing catch-up. When Apple came on to the scene a couple of years ago, it threw away the rulebook and reinvented it. We unfortunately don’t have that luxury. It’s true, Apple caught us all napping. It launched something that was very iconic, new and unseen with a very good user interface."

Two new iterations of iPhone firmware are already in field testing, a website's access logs indicate. Records publicized by Boy Genius Report show devices with v3.1.3 and v4.0 firmware connecting, alongside hardware at or before the present v3.1.2 revision. Intel has signaled its plans to detail the first processors based on its 32 nanometer Westmere technology on Thursday. Engadget has the first claimed honest-to-goodness images of the Google Phone, aka Nexus One.
Speculation and chatter regarding the company’s device has been firing up across the Web across the weekend just gone. The device apparently runs the Android 2.1 OS, which offers new 3D elements in the Apps stray, more homsecreens and a new grid icon which raises mini previews of all homescreen pages.
As pictured, the Google Phone is running on the T-Mobile network and is also using WiFi. Engadget reports the device to be “incredibly thin and sleek”, with four buttons and a volume control. The device also lacks a logo for HTC, the company thought to be manufacturing the device.

RAmos T11TE 5-inch PMP outputs 1080p over HDMI, might be compensating for something
Look, we're not ones to knock specs for specs' sake, and 1080p output is certainly impressive for a $177.45 Chinese import PMP, but after seeing RAmos churn its way through some Android with the W7, it's hard to get fired up for this new T11TE monster. But back to the specs: there's a 5-inch 800 x 480 touchscreen, 16GB of built-in memory, microSD expansion and codec support galore. Windows Mobile 7 only at the end of 2010
Bad news for Microsoft. Even though its market share in mobile phones is melting away, the new version of its OS, Windows Mobile 7 will not be ready for release until the end of 2010. At the time of this announcement, Phil Moore, the person in charge of mobile division the U.K. acknowledged that they have been caught napping by Apple at the time of the release of the iPhone. One can appreciate this frankness that cost a lot to the company; especially as new standards have now been defined since the iPhone arrived. Microsoft hopes now to release a new system at the end of 2010 with a graphical interface and the functions that will meet the expectations of their customers. However by that time more water will have passed under the bridge and they will have to practically start again at zero in this market that is still evolving.

Nintendo bringing pink and blue Wiimotes to America on Valentine's Day
Hey, kids. We got your attention? Good. Remember those pink and blue Wii controllers that were quietly launched in the Land of the Rising Sun back in October? Yeah, well it seems that both of those gems are coming to the United States, but it'll be well after Christmas before you can get your hands on either (without a good importer, anyway). Starting on February 14, 2010, the blue and pink Wiimote will be on sale on US soil, and both devices will come bundled with Wii MotionPlus dongles. JP Morgan raises Apple stock target to $230
JP Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz has raised his price target for Apple stock from $220 to $230, according to Reuters. The adjustment is based on better growth than anticipated for Macs, iPhones and iPods. Industry contacts reached by Moskowitz suggest that Mac shipments in particular have improved during the past two weeks; Apple is now expected to ship 3.29 million computers during the December quarter, instead of 3.17 million.

GeForce 300 to outpace dual Radeons?
NVIDIA's first GeForce 300 series cards may provide it with an unambiguous lead over AMD if purportedly leaked benchmarks are accurate. The tests suggest that the fastest single-chip GeForce card, the GTX 380, would be faster than the dual-chip Radeon HD 5970. They go so far as to suggest that a slightly speed-reduced card, the GTX 360, will often come close and in one case exceed AMD's flagship card.

Weltrekordkamera mit 158 Linsen

Diese Kamera wurde am Nagoya Institute of Technology entwickelt und hat es gerade eben ins Guinness Buch der Rekorde geschafft. Es handelt sich um die Kamera mit den weltweit meisten Linsen, nämlich 158 Stück um genau zu sein. Dem Team um Professor Yojiro Ishino ging es hauptsächlich darum, wiegende Flammen von so vielen Winkeln wie möglich zu portraitieren. Ganze sechs Monate hat es gedauert dieses Monster an Kamera herzustellen, und auch 3D-Aufnahmen sind mit dem Linsenbügel möglich.

New Nexus One leak shows UI with 3D, home grid
A new hands-on with Google's Nexus One early today has confirmed several details of the phone, particularly its interface. Suchmaschinengigant Google hat auf einer Mitarbeiterveranstaltung am 11.12. begonnen, Vorabexemplare eines neuen Smartphone an die Belegschaft auszugeben. Das "Nexus One" wird nach Informationen von TechCrunch und anderen unter Android 2.1. betrieben und von HTC gebaut - allerdings nach Google-Vorgaben. In Twitter finden sich Bilder eines aufgeräumt wirkenden, iPhone-ähnlichen Geräts mit wenigen physischen Tasten und dem resultierenden großen Touchscreen. Erste Reaktionen auf die offensichtlich SIMlock-frei ausgegebene Weihnachtsgratifikation lesen sich enthusiastisch.
In den Bereich der Spekulation gehören Ansagen, dass Google das Nexus bereits ab Januar selbst und ausdrücklich ohne Bundling mit einem Carrier via Internet verkaufen möchte. Ebenso unbestätigt ist die Vermutung, das Gerät könne über Online-Werbeeinnahmen quersubventioniert und zu einem Kampfpreis angeboten werden.

Apple to buy VoIP provider, iCall?
This one has little to no corroboration but the Business Insider's heard that Apple may be making another purchase. This time, the target is a VoIP provider called iCall and the amount they've been hearing is $50-60 million.

iPhone sales hit 90,000 in S. Korea, expect 700,000 sales in 2010 - report
iPhone sales in South Korea appear to be off the charts, with local carrier KT claiming “some 90,000 new iPhone subscribers,” so far.
These figures include the 53,000 iPhones pre-ordered prior to launch, and is prompting the carrier to ensure it ties a deal for the next-gen iPhone. The device went on sale in the country on November 28.
What’s also interesting about these figures as that they seemingly propel Apple to the top of the smartphone charts in the country, which apparently boasts some 400,000 (which seems extremely low at first glance) smartphone users, according to The Korea Times.

Amazon has at last introduced its Kindle for iPhone app into the App Store on an international basis, including the UK.

Apple nears 10m iPhone sales in Q1 as new OS upgrade sitings emerge
Apple seems set to achieve near ten million iPhone sales in its first financial quarter running until late December, indications from inside Taiwan-based component suppliers suggest.
Smartphone component suppliers there are looking at a boom quarter with market value of sales climbing 32 percent sequentially, a Digitimes report states, observing, “In the third quarter of 2009, sales of the Apple iPhone 3GS far exceeded expectations, and sales are expected to reach 10 million in the fourth quarter of 2009.”

China Unicom plans its own iPhone Apps service
More news on China Unicom’s attempt to build its own App Store designed to run in conjunction with Apple’s App Store for the iPhone.
A senior executive at a subsidiary of Apple’s current Chinese carrier confirmed these plans, saying that Shanghai Unicom is testing "Wan Jia Ying" (Player Camp) an online platform on which iPhone users can exchange information and share content.
Testing of the service began in August, but the plan doesn’t include making this China Unicom’s primary application platform. It currently offers over 270 apps, including both free and paid versions.

Scandinavian carrier TeliaSonera today claimed to be the first in the world with an active Long Term Evolution network. Ankonian heißt der Renner und sieht aus wie ein Stealth Fighter F-117 auf vier Rädern. Gewaltig, schnell und ziemlich gut sieht er aus. China Unicom plans its own iPhone Apps service
More news on China Unicom’s attempt to build its own App Store designed to run in conjunction with Apple’s App Store for the iPhone.
A senior executive at a subsidiary of Apple’s current Chinese carrier confirmed these plans, saying that Shanghai Unicom is testing "Wan Jia Ying" (Player Camp) an online platform on which iPhone users can exchange information and share content.
Testing of the service began in August, but the plan doesn’t include making this China Unicom’s primary application platform. It currently offers over 270 apps, including both free and paid versions.

Amazon Kindle App goes international
Amazon has at last introduced its Kindle for iPhone app into the App Store on an international basis, including the UK.
“We are excited to make the Kindle for iPhone App available to iPhone and iPod touch users in more than 60 countries, allowing them to access the vast selection of the most popular books, all available wirelessly from the Kindle Store," said Ian Freed, vice president, Amazon Kindle.

Apple nears 10m iPhone sales in Q1 as new OS upgrade sitings emerge
Apple seems set to achieve near ten million iPhone sales in its first financial quarter running until late December, indications from inside Taiwan-based component suppliers suggest.
Smartphone component suppliers there are looking at a boom quarter with market value of sales climbing 32 percent sequentially, a Digitimes report states, observing, “In the third quarter of 2009, sales of the Apple iPhone 3GS far exceeded expectations, and sales are expected to reach 10 million in the fourth quarter of 2009.”

Office 2003 hat Probleme mit Office-Dateien
Ein Fehler im Rights Management Service (RMS) von Office 2003 führt dazu, dass sich Office-Dokumente nicht mehr öffnen oder speichern lassen, wenn RMS verwendet wird. Der Fehler tritt seit dem 11. Microsoft hat am Freitag die Übernahme des kanadischen Softwareanbieters Opalis bekannt gegeben. The filing also confirms a few more details including microSD expansion, 802.11b/g WiFi, and Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR. But the real news comes from looking at the radios: quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE with UMTS/HSUPA on 850/1700/1900 frequencies. Palm: Pixie bekommt WiFi

Das Pixie ist das zweite Handy von Palm, das mit dem webOS betrieben wird. In den USA ist es bereits erhältlich, ebenso wie das Pre beim dortigen Provider Sprint. Neben der schlechteren Kamera wurde dort vor allem das Fehlen von WiFi am Pixie bemängelt zu recht. Offenbar ist jetzt eine neue Version unterwegs - mit WiFi. Verizon, der andere CDMA-Netzbetreiber in den USA soll das Handy anbieten. Eine GSM-Version ist hingegen immer noch nicht wirklich in Sicht. Ab sofort gibt es eine Version das Hasbro-Spiel Flottenmanöver (2,39 Euro) in einer Version für das iPhone und den iPod touch. Barnes & Noble Nook torn down and rooted -- but still respected
Barnes & Noble might be pitching the Nook to the literary set, but it turns out the Android-based dual-screen reader is pretty hacker-friendly as well: both the OS and filesystem are stored on a microSD card. That means the newly-formed crew at nookdevs has already managed to root what they describe as the "generic" Android 1.5 build that's hidden under the Nook's navigation UI, and they say the device can do "everything a rooted Android phone can do." That's certainly intriguing, especially since the Nook has a data-only AT&T 3G modem and WiFi to go along with that capacitive touchscreen and E Ink display -- can you say "potential"?

Seagate will release a 2,5" disk of 7 mm thickness
Currently, there are two standards of thickness of the 2.5" hard drives, the 9,5 mm that is more generally on offer, and the 12,5 mm that one finds on certain discs of high capacity and is only rarely found in laptops. In addition, the manufacturers also produce thicker discs for specific needs, like Seagate, who markets a disk of 15mm in an external case. It is impossible to integrate this thickness in a portable. If the manufacturers need thinner disks they must go towards the 1,8" models who exist into 7 and even 5 mm thicknesses. This type of disk Apple installs in its Macbook Air. However the arrival of the SSD changed things a little. If one takes apart such a 2,5" disk, one finds that the case takes a lot of the space and that the disk could have been thinner. One particularly notices it with the latest SSD from Intel, the X25-M Postville.

The Flashing Display Issue Responsible for the Lack of iMac 27"?
Two problems have been reported on the new iMac 27". The first one is the broken glass plate installed on front of the LCD display, affecting iMac powered by Core i5/i7. According to our source, this problem has been fixed at the production level and should not happen anymore. The second one is the random and annoying flashing/flickering issue of the LED backlighting. So far, it does not seem that Apple found a solution. According to Computerword, some resellers report that Apple can not give clear and definitive shipping date for any ordered 27" iMac.

A test where the Mac Pro wins out against the iMac core i7
The arrival of the iMac Core i7 has created difficulties to the range of Mac Pro. In the majority of the tests, the iMac has proved to be at least as fast as Mac Pro with 4 cores, which is not surprising, since the structure of the two machines is very similar, certainly too similar in the eyes of some.However a test by Barefeats gives the honours to the Mac Pro again. It is a test of the memory bandwidth where Mac Pro are nearly 3 times faster than the iMac. This is not surprising. Mac Pro can use simultaneously 3 channels of memory and as many memory bars while the iMac has only two. The memory speed of iMac is "only" 4.8GT/s, against 6.4GT/s for Mac Pro. Another test carried out under After effect watch shows that the 4 CPU Mac Pro is 25% faster than the iMac Core i7. The last time we bumped into MSI's 15.6-inch X-Slim X600 we were unimpressed with the build quality -- it just seemed like too much plastic in too thin of a form factor to be trusted. If one looks back at GPUs used in the past Mac hardware models, we would notice that Apple paid attention to share and respect an equilibrium between ATI/AMD and NVIDIA models. Mac Pro always feature the default entry-level model from one brand and the high-end model from the other.
