No Tolerance for Doping in Vancouver

Swiss Star Lara Gut Out of Olympics

Evan Lysacek's Coach Thinks 1980 Olympics Were Rigged
Filed under: Figure SkatingOne of the reasons many sports fans don't take figure skating seriously is because the winner is determined by judges. Boxing has judges too, but frequently they're rendered unnecessary because one fighter pounds the other into goo.
That's not the case in skating. Eight years ago, a coalition of Olympic figure skating judges told everybody they didn't see what they swore they saw. It looked like the Canadian pair of Jamie Salé and David Pelletier had outskated Russia's Yelena Berezhnaya and Anton Sikharulidze, but the judges said otherwise. Lindsey Vonn Criticizes Watered Down Course After 19th-Place Finish

OmniGroup considering developing iPad-specific apps
OmniGroup is set to release new versions of several software utilities optimized for Apple's new iPad tablet, according to the company's CEO Ken Case. Leaks put Intel, AMD six-core CPUs in March and May
Insiders at mainboard builders today revealed some of the details for the six-core processors from AMD and Intel. The latter will take the bow first and is now believed certain to launch the Core i7-980X in March. It's known to run at 3.33GHz and will be a very high end chip with 12MB of cache. Pricing may reach over $1,000, however, and would reserve it for gaming PCs and performance workstations.

Former Facebook app dev touts iPad as better platform
Joe Hewitt -- who famously walked away from developing the Facebook iPhone app, over issues with Apple's app review policies -- is now speaking enthusiastically about the iPad. Chinese iPhone sales ready to grow to 5 million per year?
Apple should be able to sell at least 4 million iPhones per year in China, argues Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty. The country is said to have 50 million potential iPhone buyers, and a new survey conducted by Morgan Stanley suggests that anywhere between 4 to 5 million people may be prepared to buy new hardware every year. Michael Dell confirms Mini 5 tablet a shipping device
Michael Dell on Thursday slipped out some of his company's plans for the Mini 5 tablet in a quick demo (viewable below). In addition to showing off the customized Android interface we saw at CES, which has at least a special menu bar, the CEO also acknowledged to TechCrunch that it would be released in "a couple months." The new Apple A4 system-on-a-chip powering the company’s iPad tablet is based on ARM technology, according to a new report. Nexus One for AT&T's 3G bands likely in the works
By all appearances, Google's trying to break Android free of the surly bonds of the manufacturers and carriers that support it, opening its own online store and selling unlocked Nexus Ones to anyone willing to pony up the $529. Problem is, the Nexus One as we know it today is only available in a configuration that supports North American 3G on AWS spectrum, meaning you've got to go with the States' fourth-largest carrier if you want to blaze -- you've got no other option. That's not very "open," is it, Google?

Samsung, LG, Apple, RIM grab fall market share
Korean cellphone makers had one of their best quarters ever in the fall for market share, according to IDC. Samsung and LG have grown by nearly a third from late 2008 to late 2009 and now occupy 21.1 percent and 10.4 percent of the market respectively, giving them comfortable second- and third-place spots. Sony Ericsson and Motorola fell by an even higher ratio to just 4.5 and 3.7 percent each, while even market leader Nokia held almost flat at 39 percent.

I'm planning to get Apple's new gadget. The biggest decision is whether to wait for 3G or get one on March 26th. (Who are we kidding? I'll be camping out at the Apple Store on release day). The real question is: How am I going to schlep one of these things around?

Microsoft, Nokia rail against iPad, Apple
The iPad is limited because it doesn't use an 'open' developer environment, Microsoft platform project manager Brandon Watson has said in an interview. He believes that iPhone, iPod and now iPad developers aren't making money because they can only write to a single platform and can't necessarily build what they want with the available toolkit. Apple has allegedly notified its support staff of issues relating to yellow-tint LCDs on certain iMac models, according to an internal document posted on Gizmodo. T-Mobile myTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition impressions
Last October, we would've never guessed that T-Mobile would bother to circle back with HTC on the myTouch 3G to craft a slightly modified version that fixes everyone's single biggest complaint -- the lack of an integrated 3.5mm headphone jack -- but here we are now in January with that very product resting in our hands. Even crazier, though, is that the only version of the modified phone (or, at least, the only version announced so far) is a limited edition tie-up with Fender and pitchman Eric Clapton. Strange bedfellows, indeed -- maybe just strange enough to work. Seriously, who doesn't want a phone endorsed by one of the hippest, most storied brands of the 20th century?

iPad will be €499 in Europe according to Tmobile
This one from Setteb.it. Tmobile.de, in their irrational exuberance for the iPad, posted a page with iPad pricing to their Website but quickly remvoved it.
It is interesting that Apple is still selling these through the mobile carrier, since half of the product matrix doesn't have 3G.
Also, interesting that Tmobile has already begun rolling out their website as Apple said "they're currently working out deals with providers". The site didn't provide what rate the 3G plans would cost Europeans.

Lenovo already roll out a few AMD-based ThinkPads earlier this month, and it's now also expanded things to its IdeaPad line with its new G455A model, which looks to be exclusive to China for now. Sliding in right above Lenovo's netbook offerings, this one packs a 14-inch, 1,366 x 768 display, along with a 2.1GHz AMD Athlon II M320 processor, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4550 graphics, 1GB of RAM, a 250GB hard drive, and Windows 7 for an OS -- among other standard fare -- all for a price tag of 3,999 yuan, or just under $600. The iPad should be properly usable by the visually impaired, says the National Federation of the Blind. Study: most e-book readers too "old," limited
Despite common assumptions, a device like Apple's iPad may be better-suited to current readers than dedicated devices like the Amazon Kindle, a new University of Georgia study says. Young adults who tried the Kindle described it as "old" and felt it was too limited compared to their smartphones, which have touchscreens, media playback and third-party apps. Older readers are more receptive but note that news delivery on the Kindle is still limited and omits components they like, such as crossword puzzles or all the secondary sections of a physical newspaper.

Just when you thought conquering the final frontier was all that the Virgin empire was fixated upon, today it announces a new product for its Limited Edition retreats on Planet Earth -- the Necker Nymph aero submarine. Heute: Tocotronic-Livekonzert für Touch und iPhone
Der MDR betritt heute Abend Neuland in Sachen Online-Radio: Das Sputnik Studiokonzert mit der Hamburger Indie-Band Tocotronic wird nicht nur Live im Radio übertragen, sondern lässt sich auch als Videostream im Internet und über die kostenlose Suptnik 2 iPhone-App auf dem iPod touch oder dem iPhone ansehen.
Los gehts kurz vor 20 Uhr mit der Vorband, der Tocotronic-Auftritt ist für 21 Uhr geplant. T-Mobile myTouch slide confirmed in photos
More T-Mobile news has surfaced today as a leak has shown that the myTouch slide is real. First called the HTC Espresso, it appears to be visibly different than the original myTouch and has a click-down optical trackpad in addition to the slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Die Bundesnetzagentur hat seit Dezember in neun Verfahren Bußgelder in einer Gesamthöhe von 500.000 Euro wegen unerlaubter Telefonwerbung und Missachtung der Rufnummernanzeigepflicht bei Werbeanrufen verhängt. O2, Orange order micro SIM cards
International carriers O2 and Orange are placing bulk orders for micro SIM cards, a source with connections to Dutch supplier Gemalto claims. Micro SIM is a new standard meant to replace traditional SIM cards, which have been in use for almost 20 years, and store essential data for a carrier connection. Giroux Daguerreotype von 1839 war erste Kamera aus der Massenproduktion, heute 700.000 Euro wert

Wer hätte das vermutet? Dass obiger Holzkasten die erste Kamera war, die in Massenproduktion hergestellt wurde und das ab 1839. Fokussiert wird bei der Giroux Daguerreotype durchs Verschieben der inneren Holzbox im Holzgehäuse, die Linse an der Vorderseite ist nämlich fixiert. Die Belichtungszeit konnte sich bis zu einer halben Stunde ziehen, da musste das Motiv dann wirklich still halten. Gut erhaltene Exemplare kosten heute ein ansehnliches Vermögen, bei einer Auktion im letzten Mai betrug das Mindestgebot 200.000 Euro, die Holz-Cam erzielte am Ende aber satte 700.000 Euro.

Samsung verzeichnet Umsatzsteigerung um 37 Prozent
Samsung hat heute die Geschäftszahlen für sein viertes Geschäftsquartal 2009 veröffentlicht. Daraus geht hervor, dass das Unternehmen seine Einnahmen gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahrs um 37 Prozent von 18,5 Billionen Won (11,4 Milliarden Euro) auf 25,3 Billionen Won (15,6 Milliarden Euro) steigern konnte. Warnung: Suche nach "iPad" führt zu Schadseiten
Zahlreiche Sicherheitsunternehmen warnen vor betrügerischen Seiten, die sich durch Suchoptimierung unter die besten Ergebnisse für den Begriff "iPad" geschmuggelt haben. "Das ist genau die Gelegenheit, auf die Betrüger gewartet haben, um Suchbegriffe zu vergiften", sagt etwa Candid Wüest von Symantec. More Zune searches find Project Pink phones
Microsoft's recent Zune 4.2 software has again revealed Zune-related phone plans through a finding in the .NET code. Enumerators for hardware support in the jukebox app make references to "eEndpointFamilyPmxPure" and "eEndpointFamilyPmxTurtle," or the two Project Pink phones that have been rumored but until now never definitively confirmed. Infineon hebt nach Gewinnsteigerung Jahresprognose an
Infineon hat das erste Quartal seines Geschäftsjahrs 2010 (bis 31. Dezember) mit einem deutlichen Gewinnplus abgeschlossen und daraufhin seine Prognose für das Gesamtjahr angehoben. Apple iPad will eat netbook market, suppliers, analysts say
Apple’s all-new iPad may eat away the netbook market it aims to reinvent, Paul Peng, executive VP of AU Optronics' (AUO's) global business unit has said.The highly-placed executive notes that: “iPad's starting price of US$499 is very competitive and should give Apple a chance to achieve annual sales of 10 million units, which is a significant estimate considering the current tablet PC market is only about three million units a year. Look at the built-in call management tools inside the iPad
Folks who have been fiddling with the new SDK have been able to get the “touch to return call” bar to appear on the iPad emulator, just like how it would appear on the iPhone (though obviously larger).

iPad forcing a tablet price war, killing netbooks?
Apple's iPad has triggered a panic in the Taiwanese PC market over the low price, according to reports from industry sources in the area. ASUS and MSI had allegedly expected Apple to charge as much as $1,000, but the $499 base price for an iPad has left them with little if any room to undercut their American rival. They had planned to price themselves between 20 to 30 percent lower but now have to reconsider as they may kill profit margins to achieve a similar effect below Apple.

The iPad has Adobe's Flash on Apple's video
You saw it here first, folks. In Apple's official video the iPad, they show the New York Times being used. Looks pretty nice right? Well, unless the Times has a special iPad version of the site that converts Flash into jpegs or something, THE IPAD HAS FLASH. Normally, we'd say that Apple simply did the renders in the Mac version of Safari and just CG'ed it into the video. However, you can see the page rendering and being resolution independent as well, so it is likely being done on an iPad.

AMD and Intel's six-core CPU plans revealed by mobo makers
You have to love DigiTimes and those loquacious sources it seems to keep finding. The latest word from the Taiwanese grapevine suggests that both Intel and AMD will be bringing out six-core CPUs to the consumer market by the middle of this year. We're using the term "consumer" rather loosely here as Intel's first Gulftown chip is expected to be priced north of $1,000. Neue Waffen: Armatix sichert Pistole per Funkarmbanduhr mit fettem Abzug in der Stilnote
Das Konzept, Waffen sicherer zu machen ist eine schizophrene Angelegenheit. Die deutsche Firma Armatix präsentierte nun diese symbiotische Kombination aus Handfeuerwaffe und Armbanduhr. Per Funksignal wird die Pistole nur dann aktiv, wenn der Träger der Uhr sich in der Nähe befindet, was an der grün aufleuchtenden LED deutlich wird. iPad im T-Online-Shop vorbestellbar
Die voraussichtlich im März verfügbare Wi-Fi-Variante des Apple iPad kann bereits jetzt im T-Online-Shop vorbestellt werden. Die angegebenen Euro-Preise für die drei Varianten mit 16, 32 oder 64 Gigabyte Speicher orientieren sich direkt an Apples Dollar-Angaben, also 499, 599 oder 699 Euro. Alternativ wird eine Finanzierung ab monatlich 10,92 Euro angeboten. (Danke Robin)
Auf Nachfrage wurde uns mitgeteilt, dass es sich bei diesen Preisangaben nicht um die finalen Preise für den Vertrieb des Geräts in Deutschland handelt. Diese sind weiterhin nicht bekannt, wir halten es für realistisch, dass Apple die Endkundenpreise hier bei 449 Euro beginnen lässt. Sollte der Verkaufspreis des iPad wider Erwarten über den im T-Online-Shop angegebenen Preise liegen, müssen Vorbesteller nur den jetzt angegebenen Preis bezahlen.

Bericht: Vodafone will Stellen in Deutschland abbauen
Vodafone will die Anzahl seiner Mitarbeiter in Deutschland reduzieren. Das meldet die Rheinische Post unter Berufung auf Konzernchef Friedrich Joussen. Der Telekomanbieter müsse demnach seinen Teil zum weltweiten Sparprogramm des britischen Mutterkonzerns beitragen. Bis März 2012 möchte das Unternehmen insgesamt eine Milliarde Pfund (1,15 Milliarden Euro) einsparen.

500.000 Euro Bußgeld wegen unerlaubter Telefonwerbung
Die Bundesnetzagentur hat in sechs Verfahren Bußgeld wegen unerlaubter Telefonwerbung verhängt. Sie ahndet damit erstmals Verstöße gegen das Verbot der unerlaubten Telefonwerbung und die Missachtung der Rufnummernanzeigepflicht bei Werbeanrufen. Die in insgesamt neun Verfahren im Dezember 2009 und Januar 2010 verhängten Bußgelder summieren sich auf rund 500.000 Euro.

Apple führt Adobe auf dem iPod Event vor
Steve Jobs' Keynotes werden immer von Analysten, Investoren und natürlich Apple-Usern (und solchen die es noch werden möchten) aufmerksam verfolgt. Dabei wird peinlich genau auch auf das kleinste Detail geachtet, um eventuelle Vorhersagen über die benutzte Keynote-Version oder ähnliches treffen zu können.
Zur Abwechslung hat Steve Jobs seine Keynote diesmal teilweise im Sitzen zugebracht, auch um das gemütliche Surfen auf dem iPad zu veranschaulichen. Dabei ist aufgefallen, dass er sich vergleichsweise lange auf der Webseite der New York Times aufhielt und dabei recht unbeeindruckt von den Flash-Fehlern auf der Seite zeigte. Meiner Meinung nach kein Zufall, sind doch alle Keynote minutiös vorbereitet und wohl auch mehrfach geprobt.
Steve Jobs wollte wohl Adobe vorführen, da sich nun durch HTML 5 und H.264 viele Videos und Inhalte wiederge

It's pretty early in the game to call the iPad a winner (or loser) but that's not going to stop analysts and industry execs from their god-given right to bluster. Telekom muss VDSL-Netz nicht vollständig öffnen
Das Bundesverwaltungsgericht Leipzig hat entschieden, dass die Deutsche Telekom ihren Wettbewerbern keinen Zugang zu VDSL-Glasfaserleitungen zwischen Hauptverteilern und Kabelverzweigern gewähren muss. Amazon steigert Gewinn im vierten Quartal um 71 Prozent
Amazon hat seine Bilanz für das vierte Geschäftsquartal 2009 veröffentlicht. Der Online-Versandhändler erzielte im Schlussquartal des vergangenen Geschäftsjahres seinen Überschuss gegenüber dem Vorjahr um 71 Prozent von 225 Millionen Dollar (161,1 Millionen Euro) auf 384 Millionen Dollar (275 Millionen Euro). The performance of hard disks has only slightly evolved over the last couple of years
Tom's Hardware amuses themselves by comparing the performances of two discs 2,5" spinning at 7200 rpm. Rather than to compare two models being currently marketed, they compared two discs marketed with 2 years difference, the Hitachi 7K200 and a 7K500 in order to know if it was a beneficial to choose a more recent disc to gain in performances. The result is in conformity with the development undertaken by all manufacturers of hard drives with platters. The new products have a higher capacity, they consume a little bit less, but overall the performances has only very slightly evolved. For daily use, one can not await a whiplash in performance with such a change of disc. The gains will only be visible to those with a stop watch in hand. For these manufacturers of discs, it is much easier, all at least for the moment, to optimize the proven mechanics and to use denser platters rather than to start o

The Shortage of Magic Mouse Is Ending
According to our sources, Apple finally managed to boost production of the Magic Mouse. Recently, there was only 2 ways to get a Magic Mouse: purchase an iMac or order one directly from the Apple Store. It should now be possible to go to an Apple reseller and get a Magic Mouse directly, as they now have some units on stock.
Not sure that resellers really like to have no stock of Magic Mouse, while both virtual and physical Apple Store had plenty on stock

iPad 3G in Apple's gallery
The iPad 3G wasn't pictured at the event but is in Apple's gallery. The difference is obviously the black patch on the back which also comes over the top of the device until it hits the screen. The plastic allows for better 3G (and GPS?) signals to reach the internal antennas.
It will be interesting to see how good Wifi access is on the regular iPad compared to the one with the plastic backing. Keep in mind the iPod touch has a patch of plastic on its back to help the wifi signal reach the internal antenna.

Adobe's Adrian Ludwig posted a quick reaction to the news that iPad, at least in its initial form, won't have Flash. Approximately 7.234 Earthlings showed any semblance of caring about Sungale's 4.3-inch Kula when we reported on it back in December, and that's clearly due to the blatant omission of a huge, inappropriate antenna on the top. Inexplicably, the Kula TV -- which is essentially the exactly same 4.3-inch PMP with 2GB of internal storage space -- ships with a flip-up WiFi antenna that's supposed to net you better signal than the month-old Kula. Fring for iPhone now lets you call with Skype over 3G
Now that the iPhone SDK seems to allow for 3G VoIP, it looks like the floodgates are beginning to open. Joining the ranks of iCall in this somewhat uncharted territory is Fring. Same deal as the previous one, the ability is already inherent in the current build, and now that the restriction has been lifted, users can simply place calls as they usually do through the service -- yes, that includes Skype calls -- only now not tethered to the nearest 802.11 cloud. As for the native Skype app, last we checked it was still not working. But it's only a matter of time.

Steve mentioned in his iPad preso yesterday that he was pretty confident the company would have international data deals locked up by June or July of this year -- but since the thing uses some wacky new micro SIM standard, carriers that intend to support it are going to need to get the new chips in stock after having used traditional SIMs for nearly twenty years.
