iTunes-Audiovorschau in Deutschland
Der Vollständigkeit halber melden wir an dieser Stelle Vollzug in Sachen iTunes Audiovorschau im Webbrowser. Anfang Januar hatten wir darüber berichtet, dass Apple in den USA die Möglichkeit bietet, die iTunes Store-Audiovorschau über einen gewöhnlichen Webbrowser abzuspielen - inzwischen steht diese Funktion auch in Deutschland bereit.
Fortan lassen sich im iTunes Store erhältliche Songs also auch im Browser probehören, eine iTunes-Installation ist dazu nicht mehr zwingend erforderlich. Beim Aufruf eines iTunes-Links (Testlink) öffnet sich eine Vorschauseite im Webbrowser und man wie im iTunes Store links vom Titel klicken, um den 30 Sekunden-Preview zu starten. Einkäufe lassen sich jedoch derzeit weiterhin nur direkt im iTunes Store tätigen.

More than a Dollar: Steve Jobs' $48m Disney dividend
Apple CEO Steve Jobs does what he does for the company he co-founded for just one dollar, but these days he manages at least some of his day-to-day expenses with help from his estimated $48 million per year Disney dividend.
Jobs has never sold any of his Apple shares, taking no more than a dollar (and the occasional jet plane) for his world class labours. It is Jobs’ dividends that keep him in the money, reckons Seeking Alpha.
“Steve Jobs is probably one of the biggest dividend investors that you’ve never heard of,” the report notes.
Jobs is currently the largest, single holder of Disney stock with around 138 million shares of Walt Disney stock that he received from the sale of Pixar Animation Studios in 2006.

Apple's Lala team will soon put iTunes into the Cloud?
TechCrunch this morning has a guest post by MP3.com founder Michael Robertson on what Apple plans to do with Lala.com. Contrary to some predictions, Apple doesn't plan to have a subscription based service according to Robertson. Instead, he sees Apple using Lala's ability to upload music to the cloud, classify it, and then play music from a browser. Any browser including a smartphone browser.

Wintek strike video
Here is some video of strikers' clashes with police at the Wintek factory in China that makes iPhone screens. Wintek is also rumored to make the 10.1 inch screen for the tablet - so take that for what it is worth. As you can see below it was a pretty significant event. More here (via @elgan)

The name game: iPad now registered by Apple
We heard less than an hour ago that BGR had got word that 'iTablet' was the name for Apple's rumored device. MacRumors was hedging on 'iSlate' earlier but now have revealed that Apple has registered 'iPad'.
Honestly at this point, we're throwing up our hands. The more we read, the less we know.

Has Apple been slowly training us to use the tablet for years?
Mike Elgan over at Computerworld has an excellent piece this morning on titled 'How Apple is training you for the future'.
Visionary companies like Apple have better ideas for how we do just about everything relating to computers and media. They know they can invent and build the products. The big problem is convincing us to use them.
That is a great point. People aren't just going to jump into a futuristic way of using a gadget. Sure, a few of us will use what Apple tells us to use, but for the majority of the population, a gradual immersion is much more effective.

Verizon whittles $350 ETF 'advanced device' list a bit, FCC pressure paying off?
There hasn't been any official announcement by Verizon -- nor any recent public chatter between the carrier and the FCC -- but for whatever reason, Big Read has gone ahead and smacked some ten devices off its premium "advanced device" list that it had used to determine whether a particular phone qualified for the gargantuan $350 early termination fee. Apple updates Boot Camp with Windows 7 support

Tablet launch to be delayed until June?
The Apple tablet may be released in June, rather than March as is commonly expected, says a Kaufman Bros. analyst. Shaw Wu cites supply chain sources, who say that a June launch may be necessary because of "minor issues" with battery life and durability. An announcement is still expected on January 27th, which would echo the deployment schedule of the iPhone. The device was revealed in January 2007, but only launched in June of that year.

Mac OS X security update addresses Flash vulnerabilities
Apple on Tuesday released security updates for Mac OS X Leopard and Snow Leopard. The updates address several issues including a CoreAudio vulnerability that left systems susceptible to attacks via MP4 audio files. The cupsd printing scheduler has also been modified to prevent malicious code from causing a remote denial of service.

Clearwire may test 120Mbps WiMAX 2 next year
Clearwire may begin testing hardware that enables even faster mobile broadband technology, thus far simply dubbed WiMAX 2, as early as 2011, according to the data provider's CTO. The 802.16m specification should be approved this summer by the IEEE and is expected to bring with it 120Mbps download and 60Mbps upload speeds in urban environments using 4x2 MIMO antennas. These numbers are about twice of what lab tests show for current WiMAX tech.

Apple hat soeben das erste Sicherheitsupdate des Jahres 2010 veröffentlicht. Die Aktualisierung richtet sich an Benutzer von Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5.8) und Snow Leopard (Mac OS X 10.6.2). Japanese group introduces wearable 'human recorder system'
Looking to keep watch on a few more vitals than something like the Fitbit provides? Then you might just be a candidate for this all-seeing, all-knowing "human recorder system" developed by a group of researchers from the University of Tokyo, and now offered by the non-profit WIN Human Recorder Co. Study: notebooks to outgrow netbooks this year
Netbooks are about to face stiff resistance from many of the companies that touted them just last year, Avian Securities said in a research note on Tuesday. Analysts at the firm still expect netbook sales to rise, from 37 million in 2009 to 47 million this year, but that notebooks will leap from 140 million to 180 million in the same span. The fourfold larger growth would come from PC builders trying to drive customers to more expensive regular notebooks after frustration at the low profit margins of netbooks.

Apple makes grab at 'iPad' trademark in numerous countries
The name "iPad" may be a more likely choice for the Apple tablet, new information is thought to suggest. Just discovered in Canadian trademark databases is an application for the name by Slate Computing, well known as a front company for Apple. The application was originally submitted in July 2009, making it far more recent than ones for the name "iSlate," filed elsewhere around 2006 or 2007.

HP shows off 'wall of touch' concept, touching optional
We're not quite sure why HP didn't bother setting one of these up at CES, but the company's so-called "wall of touch" is apparently already in use by a handful of companies in prototype form, and HP has now shown it off to The Wall Street Journal. Interestingly, while you're welcome to touch the wall all you want, you don't actually have to, as it makes use of a camera-based system and a magnetic strip to detect where you're pointing and when you near the wall. "Tens of millions" of tablets to be sold in 2010
Thanks to key releases, tablets are about to have their "breakout year" and move tens of millions of units, Deloitte says in a new long-term estimate. Apple's expected tablet unveiling as well as the eventual launch of the HP slate should help fuel the otherwise quiet category, which includes any Internet-aware, touch-only device larger than a smartphone but smaller than a netbook. Author Paul Lee anticipates that tablets could account for up to over $1 billion in sales and eclipse the GPS market.

ExactCODE has released OCRKit, a utility that converts images into searchable PDF files. Analyst: "Zune phone" in two months
Jefferies & Co. analyst Katherine Egbert today claimed in an investment note that Microsoft is on the verge of showing its own. The researcher's checks within the industry would have a "Zune-like phone" due within the next two months and is likely to show at a major event, either at Mobile World Congress in February or the CTIA spring show in March. It would actually be manufactured by another company, similar to the rebranding behind the HTC-made Google Nexus One, and would have 720p playback, a 5-megapixel camera and a music store.

Rund um den möglicherweise kommenden Tablet-Computer von Apple gibt es inzwischen mehr als genug Gerüchte, um das ebenfalls erwartete OS 4.0 für das iPhone und den iPod touch dagegen ist es relativ ruhig. Samsung MU200 caught on camera, begging for its screen to be touched
Somehow we missed giving the Samsung MU200 a groping at CES, and we're pretty sure we'd forgive ourselves for that if NewGadgets.de hadn't caught some pretty incomplete video of the 20-inch touchscreen all-in-one. Though it has some responsive touch buttons, we've got no idea how its multitouch display performs since the German-chap forgot to test it out. We know CES can be an exhausting time, but we're not sure how you forget to try out the most important part of the machine (there's even a big cartoon finger demanding onlookers to touch it!). But we do learn from the video that the system packs a 2.2GHz Intel Pentium T4400 processor, 2GB of RAM, 320GB of storage, and GeForce G310 graphics and that it got a fair share of ports along the backside and an optical drive on its right side. PGP Desktop gains Boot Camp support
PGP Corporation has released an updated version of PGP Destkop, its enterprise-level encryption platform. PGP Whole Disk Encryption Desktop 10.0 is now available for Snow Leopard, and the platform as a whole now supports Boot Camp, finally allowing hybrid Mac/Windows systems to be encrypted. In the same vein, Mac, Linux and Windows PCs can all be used in the same environment.

We heard less than an hour ago that BGR has heard iTablet for Apple's rumored device. MacRumors was hedging on iSlate earlier but now have revealed that Apple has registered 'iPad'.

LG X300 ad rips on MacBook Air
LG is directly playing off of Apple's MacBook Air ads in a new PC commercial, according to a tipster. In its home country, an ad for the new X300 netbook (viewable below) copies the Air's use of a manila envelope but, after taking a notebook out, calls the Apple system "unthinkable" and switches to the LG system, which is thinner at under 0.7 inches and lighter at 2.1 pounds. It goes so far as to play an upbeat song near the end much like Yael Naim's "New Soul," which shot up in popularity after Apple's use.

iPhone 4.0 to include multitasking, overhauled interface?
Some of the first details of the iPhone 4.0 firmware have emerged, a report claims. An Apple source informs that the code will make several major changes, for instance expanding multi-touch gestures to be used across the OS, and not just in apps like Maps or Photos. Neues aus Sony Vaio-Z Line: haarscharfe Displays und Quad SSD

Die neuen Subnoteboks von Sony sind angekündigt. Das Z11Z9E/B kommt mit 1920x1080 Auflösung auf einem 13 Zoll Bildschirm, Core i7 und das Z11X9E/B mit 1600x900 Auflösung und Core i5. Beide haben eine NVIDIA Geforce GT 330M und wiegen 1,4 Kilo. HDMI, VGA, Bluetooth, WiFi, Kartenleser und ExpressCard-Slot mit beleuchteter Tastatur. 1800 Euro kostet der kleine, 2500 der große ab Mitte März und lässt sich im Sony Shop auf Wunsch zusammenkonfigurieren. Lala to give iPhones, Apple tablets an online locker?
Apple's buyout of Lala revolves around an online locker for a user's music, MP3tunes head Michael Robertson says. AT&T bolstering network for Super Bowl
In order to avoid leaving a bad taste in its subscribers' mouths at the upcoming Pro Bowl and Super Bowl XLIV in Miami, wireless provider AT&T has announced on Tuesday it has upgraded its South Florida network. This includes expanding capacity and coverage in and near the Dolphin Stadium and other nearby areas lots of visitors are expected. The provider hopes its measures will help it prevent the kind of poor service and lack of signal as its customers experienced at the recent CES show.

Rome: Total War Gold Edition now due February 5th
Feral Interactive says it is moving up the release date of Rome: Total War Gold Edition for the Mac, which will now ship on February 5th instead of in March. The original edition of the game was developed for Windows by Creative Assembly, and released in 2004. The Gold Edition includes 2005's Barbarian Invasion expansion, set during the decline of the Roman Empire.

Apple's Lala team will soon put iTunes into the Cloud?
TechCrunch this morning has a guest post by MP3.com founder Michael Robertson on what Apple plans to do with Lala.com. Contrary to some predictions, Apple doesn't plan to have a subscription based service according to Robertson. Instead, he sees Apple using Lala's uploading of music to the cloud and ability to play music from a browser. Any browser including a smartphone browser.

Mac sales up 26 percent in December quarter
Mac sales rose 26 percent year-over-year in the December quarter, according to new figures from the NPD Group. Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster notes that the growth is substantially higher than Street expectations, which called for a shift of only 19 percent. FBI verschaffte sich Daten unter Vorwand

Apple in near total control of mobile app market
Apple and the App Store have near absolute control of the mobile app industry, says Gartner. The research firm notes that approximately 2.5 billion iPhone apps were downloaded in 2009, the 3 billion total downloads mark having been hit earlier this month. By comparison only 16 million apps were downloaded last year through other, newer app stores, giving Apple a 99.4 percent share. Overall industry sales revenue was $4.2 billion.

Laut der Deloitte Studie "TMT-Predictions 2010" bringt das neue Jahr den TMT-Märkten (Technologie, Medien und Telekommunikation) vor allem mehr Vernetzung, mehr Leistung, mehr Virtualisierung, mehr "Green" - und mehr Wettbewerb. Online backup service Carbonite has introduced an iPhone app for mobile file access.
The Carbonite iPhone app allows customer to log in to their Carbonite account from an iPhone or iPod touch. Files backed up from the user's PC or Mac hard drive can then be accessed and viewed through their mobile browser, as well as attached to an email sent from the device. The app also has an offline mode, where cached content can be accessed at any time.

ComScore disses Gartner's 99.4% App Store claims, the maths 'miss'
So, Apple made 99.4 percent of all app sales for phones in 2009 did it?
Not so fast, warned ComScore this morning, raising questions at Gartner’s partisan and well-reported claims.
During a presentation at the Mobile Games Forum in London today, comScore analyst Alistair Hill said, "I think somebody's missed something out on the maths there I find that hard to believe.
“We know iPhone users buy a lot more apps than anybody else, but that [the Gartner claims] still doesn't work,” he said, as reported by Mobile Entertainment News.

UK and European Apple-watchers may have a wait on their hands before they get their paws around the much-expected tablet - the content/carrier deals purportedly surrounding the device may demand a US-only launch, at least at first.

Apple has been briefing record labels about its tablet but clearly doesn't consider music the focus, details slipped out today suggest. Ryan aus Neuseeland hat seiner Frau ein Tablet für die Küche gebaut. Und er hatte konsequente Vorgaben dafür. Es sollte halbwegs stabil sein, in die Küche integriert werden und das Interface sollte wie bei einem iPhone sein. Statt ein eigenes iSlate zu hacken hat dann diverse Applikationen auf einen HTML-Homescreen gesetzt der das iPhone-Interface mit Windows 7 simuliert. Bonus: Ein Barcodescanner um das Kücheninventar zu managen. Definitiv die Küche die wir auch gerne hätten.

Google's spat with Chinese government causes 'postponement' of Android phones
You have to love a good clash of legitimate titans, and they don't get much bigger than Google and China. After deciding to stop censoring its Google.cn results, the Mountain View company of evil-non-doers has stepped up its offensive with the announcement that two Android phones -- one from Samsung and one from Motorola -- which were slated to make their arrival on China Unicom on Wednesday have now been postponed. Speculation: Apple tablet may be US-only on launch
UK and European Apple-watchers may have a wait on their hands before they get their paws around the much-expected tablet - the content/carrier deals purportedly surrounding the device may demand a US-only launch, at least at first.
Suspicion this may be the case has been sparked by the company’s decision not to hold an event for European media to coincide with the January 27 launch in Cupertino. Online backup service Carbonite has introduced an iPhone app for mobile file access.
The Carbonite iPhone app allows customer to log in to their Carbonite account from an iPhone or iPod touch. Files backed up from the user's PC or Mac hard drive can then be accessed and viewed through their mobile browser, as well as attached to an email sent from the device. The app also has an offline mode, where cached content can be accessed at any time.

ComScore disses Gartner's 99.4% App Store claims, the maths 'miss'
So, Apple made 99.4 percent of all app sales for phones in 2009 did it?
Not so fast, warned ComScore this morning, raising questions at Gartner’s partisan and well-reported claims.
During a presentation at the Mobile Games Forum in London today, comScore analyst Alistair Hill said, "I think somebody's missed something out on the maths there I find that hard to believe.
“We know iPhone users buy a lot more apps than anybody else, but that [the Gartner claims] still doesn't work,” he said, as reported by Mobile Entertainment News.

Ars Technica hat einige interessante Zahlen aus einer Marktforschungsstudie von Gartner über Applikationen für mobile Geräte zusammen getragen. Erst vor kurzem gab Apple bekannt, bereits drei Milliarden iPhone-Apps über den App Store verkauft zu haben. Rund 2.5 Milliarden Downloads entfielen dabei auf das Jahr 2009. Gemäss Gartner konnten sämtliche Apple-Konkurrenten zusammen im gleichen Zeitraum hingegen lediglich 16 Millionen Applikationen vertreiben. Studie: “App Economy” umfasst 2010 6,2 Mrd. $
Laut dem IT-Marktforschungs- und Beratungsunternehmen Gartner werden Konsumenten im laufende Jahr 6,2 Milliarden US-Dollar in Mobile Application Stores ausgeben, während die Werbeumsätze auf 0,6 Milliarden US-Dollar geschätzt werden (2009: 4,2 Mrd. Gesamtumsätze). Die Gartner-Analysten prognostizieren, dass die Downloads in Application Stores im Jahr 2010 4,5 Milliarden überschreiten werden, wovon acht von zehn kostenlos sein werden. Spiele bleiben das erfolgreichste Genre, gefolgt mobile shopping (M-Commerce), Social Networking, systemnahen Dienstprogrammen sowie "Productivity Tools".
Gartner prognostiziert weiter, dass bis 2013 die weltweiten Downloads in Mobile Application Stores 29,5 Milliarden überschreiten werden. Or you could, like a Gartner report reported by Ars states, say that Apple is absolutely obliterating the rest of the field. Using their slide rules and impecable guessing abilities, they've concluded that Apple is responsible for all but .6% of the global market in app sales. And that is without a tablet store.
That's just the begining. As app sales increase, estimated revenues go from $4.2 billion in 2009 to $6.8 billion this year, to about $30 billion in 2013.

NVIDIA: More About Fermi While Waiting for It
According to the last tidbits, the NVIDIA Fermi-based graphic card should be entitled GeForce GF100 and be available in March. If NVIDIA did not demo any unit so far it keeps communicating about it. At the end of the CES, NVIDIA invited some journalists to talk about GPGPU and performance of the future GPU in 3D rendering. This is the first time that NVIDIA communicate about the graphic performance of the Fermi as it mostly concentrate so far on the crushing power of Fermi. This is probably to stick back to one of the main purchasing driving force today, games on computer, even though Apple did not really understand it so far, preferring games on iPhone and equipping last iMac with GPU either from the previous generation or with only 2 months to go before the release of new GPU models. According to figures, the GF 100 looks promising, however, one will have to wait for the first independent tests. Let's hope that Snow Leopard and its Open CL will be able to benefit from Fermi, implying that Apple will work

AT&T fixes bug that logged users into random Facebook accounts
Okay, so we were under the impression that Facebook login credentials were a locally-managed affair, but it looks like almost anything can break when AT&T's involved -- according to CNET, the carrier just fixed "several problems" that had users logging into the wrong Facebook account from their phones. The issue was apparently related to subscriber identification numbers being mistranslated into bad URL session IDs, and AT&T says it's taken some security measures to prevent it from happening again, while Facebook's just shut off the automatic login feature that used the ID number entirely. Excellent work all around. Unfortunately, there's also a pesky incident in Atlanta where someone was able to login to another Facebook account from an AT&T phone

Samsung rolls out HZ30 series compact ultrazooms
Samsung chose a post-CES launch add to its camera line for the US. At the top of the unveilings are the HZ30W and HZ35W, both of which tout some of the highest zooms ever in the compact class: either 12-megapixel unit jumps from 10X to 15X, enough to rival recent "prosumer" long-range shooters. They still keep a 24mm equivalent close focus for wide-angle photography.

Rumored HTC tablet project both confirmed and suspended in one fell swoop

EFI-Firmware-Update 1.4 für den Mac Pro
Für den aktuellen Mac Pro veröffentlichte Apple das EFI-Firmware-Update 1.4: Es "verbessert die Kompatibilität mit Virtualisierungsprodukten, die VT-d verwenden, verbessert die Speicherleistung unter Windows XP für Benutzer von Boot Camp und verbessert die Zuverlässigkeit des Systems während des Startvorgangs", so Apple. Apple Wants to Help Us to Be Greener
Even Greenpeace had to acknowledge the impressive move with Apple now ranking 5th (and moving up) in its classification of the Green IT companies.
Apple continues its climb up the ranking from 11th place in v.12 to 9th in v.13 and is now in 5th place, with a score of 5.1 points, up from 4.9. Apple does best on the toxic chemicals criteria, where it scores most of its points [BUT] Apple loses a point for providing even less information (on its updated web-pages) about its supply chain communications than before. This criterion evaluates disclosure of information flow in the supply chain. Apple also loses a point for minimal information about its future toxic chemical phase-out plans, reducing its communication on this subject on its updated web-pages.

KIST Mahru-Z waits on you very, very slowly
We've seen KIST's Marhu robot tooling around here before, but now they're showing off the latest models, the Mahru-Z (with some help from Mahru-M), in some super useful scenarios. Mahru-Z and M have been successfully demonstrating their service abilities by carrying cups of tea, and retrieving toast from toasters and delivering it as well. The Z-version bot is a bit shorter than previous iterations, and also sports different, more dextrous arms. He stands about 4 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 122 pounds. Xbox rumored to get streaming ESPN
Microsoft is hoping to gain an edge in networked media hubs by offering live sports through the Xbox 360, a leak on Monday maintains. The console's originator is reportedly in significant talks with Disney to stream ESPN's feeds of live TV shows through the system.
