Nokia N900 can ride the Google Wave
We're not talking about some mobile version here à la iPhone, no sir. MobileDeveloperTV has itself a Maemo-powered Nokia N900, and sure enough, it runs the full version of Google Wave. There looks to be some lag between the keyboard and text box, but if you're hankering to mash up Espoo's latest and greatest with the G man's latest and greatest, there's nothing standing in your way. China Unicom sets launch date for iPhone
The Chinese cellular carrier China Unicom has finally set an local launch date for the iPhone 3G and 3GS. Customers will be able to purchase Apple's smartphone beginning October 30th. Following the initial launch, the company is expected to expand sales to its online store and Apple's retail locations.

Macnification 1.6 goes 64-bit, supports Grand Central
Orbicule has released a major update to its microscopy software, Macnification 1.6. The tool allows scientists to organize, analyze and compare microscopic image captures. It utilizes Quick Look, Spotlight and QuickTime, and features a non-destructive workflow to protect original captures. New in v1.6 is full 64-bit support for use in Snow Leopard, and Grand Central Dispatch awareness to exploit all of the available processors on a given Mac.

Jailbreak for iPhone OS 3.1.2 available
Shortly after the announcement of Blackra1n by Geohot, it is with the turn of dev team to announce the Pwnage Tool in version 3.1.4 which makes it possible to generate a personalized firmware (and jailbroken of course) for your iPhone. The jailbreak functions with iPhone OS 3.1.2 on all the models iPhone (v1, 3G and 3GS) as on the iPod Touch except v3.
Let us remind jailbreaking is not the same as de-simlock! Indeed, the de-simlock is not yet available on the iPhone 3.1.2 and solutions such as ultrasn0w do not work. Of course if your iPhone is officially de-simlocked it remains it.

Apple regains 4th place in US, passes 9.4% share
Apple has successfully recaptured its fourth place spot in US computer market share, according to early estimates from IDC. The Mac creator had slipped in spring but should now have bounced back to claim 9.4 percent of shipments, or about 1.64 million Macs. The number is a rapid 35.2 percent growth in what it had shipped one season earlier and is a rare example of a sharp year-over-year growth in the current climate, as it represents an 11.8 percent boost over Apple's share a year ago, in summer 2008.

Computer Docking Systems has announced the Dock-a-Mac vertical docking system for MacBooks. The black acrylic station docks with any black or white MacBook, and is available in three configurations, based on video output. Buyers can choose between VGA, DVI or HDMI options, which connect a computer to an external monitor or TV. Vertical orientation allows for better heat dissipation, and the docking bar is removable for portability's sake.

Acer Aspire One D250 Android netbook gets fondled and photographed
Acer (a company that we always knew as ambitious but not too ambitious) finally launched its Aspire One D250 dual boot Windows 7 / Android netbook today, and as you can imagine the ears of the gadget world have all perked up a little bit. According to Pocket-lint, the implementation of the open source OS on a touchscreen deficient PC is not without its issues. For instance, without any designated Android keys, one can find themselves going to the trackpad and ESC key a bit too often. Appirion's iDriver app lets iPhone control minivan (video)
Believe it or not, a device-controlled car isn't exactly fresh. In fact, we've actually seen a PSP control a Civic before Barack Obama was even a glimmer in the media's eye. That said, we're always willing to give credit where it's due, and the iDriver app just might be the most impressive use of Apple's smartphone well, ever. As the name implies, this here app is able to control a heavily wired vehicle seemingly with ease -- the accelerometer handles the steering, and two soft buttons on the screen handle braking and acceleration. Posthumous Michael Jackson album to come to iTunes
The first Michael Jackson album to be released after the singer's death, This Is It, will indeed be available through iTunes, says the senior VP of publicity for Epic Records. Lois Najarian also notes that the two-disc collection should be released on October 27th, although there continues to be a dispute with Sony and the Jackson estate over selling individual tracks. Depending on the resolution of the conflict, shoppers may either be required to pick up the complete album, or get the option of buying individual songs as usual.

News: Pinch Media: 1.5 million iPhone devices using pirated apps
New data published by analytics firm Pinch Media suggests that as many as 1.5 million iPhones and iPod touches have used a pirated application. AT&T: Tethering is probably going to be a 2010 thing
AT&T's iPhone tethering is something near and dear to my heart. In fact, I may or may not be writing this tethered to my iPhone on a train to New York City right now. We know tethering works on AT&T's network because frankly, we've been doing it using only Apple's software since the iPhone 3.0 betas have been out (and before using PDAnet). To keep tethering possible, all we've had to do is not update to 3.1 - which isn't that easy.
Tethering is really handy when travelling, or as a home back-up Internet connection when the cable/DSL is out. It works well on USB and slightly less well over Bluetooth, so long as AT&T has service in the area - which isn't always.

Toshiba vows no "craplets" on Windows 7 notebooks
Toshiba on Wednesday updated its notebooks with Windows 7 and a rare promise among Windows PC makers. The company promises that all of its systems running the new OS, including its touchscreen models, will go without any icons on the desktop except for the default Recycle Bin. System performance should get a boost as the PCs will run as little software in the background as possible, in many cases only running anti-virus tools.

Motorola Sholes finally gets a decent headshot
At last eluding the omnipresent Mr. Blurrycam, Motorola's Android-powered Sholes handset has finally gotten the sort of photography it deserves -- or at least one decent photo of it. Recent iPhone 3GS shipments block jailbreaking, jailbreakers still in business
Well, if you can't beat 'em, then just keep 'em busy. That seems to be the thinking at Apple these days at least, which has ratcheted up its fight with the iPhone jailbreaking community once again by updating the bootrom on iPhone 3GS units that started shipping in the past week. That was apparently first discovered by Mathieulh and later verified by iPhone Dev Team member "Muscle Nerd," who confirmed that the update (iBoot-359.3.2) renders the iPhone 3GS "impossible" to jailbreak for the time being. Of course, that time could well end up being fairly short, but if you just have to jailbreak a 3GS right now, you'll probably want to try to track down some old stock or snap up a refurbished unit.[Via

Mozillas „Plugin Check“ prüft Plugin-Aktualität

Toshiba announces touchscreen notebooks, netbooks for Windows 7 launch
Toshiba's just announced a couple new lappies -- and a whole host of refreshes -- in anticipation of the Windows 7 launch later this month. The big news here is definitely the touchscreen models: The Satellite U505 (due out November 1) is a 13.3-inch, 5 lb device with an MSRP of $1,049.99, while the Satellite M505 (street date October 22) has 14.4-inches of real estate and an MSRP of $949.99. Both come with the touch-ready LifeSpace software package that includes Bulletin Board (some sort of organizer with to-do lists, calendars and the like), and ReelTime, which apparently "helps you find files based on when they were opened using a visual history." Tosh is promising to ship Windows 7 devices with minimal software running in the background -- which is important if you want to retain

Acer plans to become no. 2 PC maker, beat Dell
Acer president Gianfranco Lanci at a press conference today predicted that his company would "finally pass" Dell for market share within six months. The company lead expects to have more overall share than Dell by the end of winter 2010 and credits it directly to better sales and the resulting financial health. Where Dell has seen falling profits, Acer expects its profit during the summer to have grown 14 percent compared to a year earlier, to about $106.8 million.

Michael Dell curiously talks down netbooks, slyly bad-mouths Vista

Over 1.5 million devices using pirated iPhone apps
Piracy is a minor but still important problem for iPhone app developers, says analytics firm Pinch Media. The company notes that shortly after the launch of the App Store in 2008, it began receiving complaints that Pinch tallies of new users were exceeding official figures displayed by iTunes Connect. The discrepancy is now believed to be attributable to piracy, tracked by Pinch since May of 2009.

Logitech introduces notebook combo kit
Logitech on Wednesday released the Notebook Kit MK605, which is made up of a wireless laser mouse and wireless keyboard, along with a pivoting riser stand. The wireless peripherals connect to the notebook via the included Logitech Unifying receiver. Restore muted audio at bootup
When you set the volume of your system to a certain level, this setting should be preserved when you reboot your system or log out and back in. Despite this, some people have reported a problem where the computer will not save these settings, and will either revert back to another volume level or be set to mute.

Nikon D3S shows its high ISO prowess in two sample videos
Well, we just got the first round of Nikon D3S previews this morning, but it looks like we now also have the first few sample videos shot with the camera -- possibly a bit ahead of Nikon's preferred schedule. While it's a bit hard to draw some firm conclusions due to their YouTube-ness (not even a "High Quality" version, unfortunately), the videos do go some way towards backing up claims that the camera truly delivers the goods when it comes to high ISO shooting -- something that's particularly evident in the stunning wildlife video shot by Vincent Munier (pictured above). Adobe issues update to Reader, Acrobat
Adobe announced in a security bulletin yesterday that, "Critical vulnerabilities have been identified in Adobe Reader 9.1.3 and Acrobat 9.1.3, Adobe Reader 8.1.6 and Acrobat 8.1.6 for Windows, Macintosh and UNIX, and Adobe Reader 7.1.3 and Acrobat 7.1.3 for Windows and Macintosh." The vulnerabilities in question can cause the programs to crash, giving a potential attacker the ability to take control of the user's system.

Barnes and Noble eBook reader revealed
Barnes and Noble is set to introduce their Kindle-fighting eBook reader next week, but Gizmodo (on a tablet roll lately) beat them to it. Hardware-wise it is an interesting concoction. It is Amazon Kindle-like eInk on top, iPhone like multi-touch color on the bottom. The mullet of tablets or multi-sport star?
The question is: is having it both ways better? You can read in sunlight but navigation is difficult. You can see color multi-media below, but the space is small. Books will have to cater towards this specific interface.
And that's the kicker. The interface will tell the tale - and for that, we'll probably have to wait until October 20th. We have to say, however, that we like that Barnes and Noble is breaking this out rather than trying to ride its traditional busin

Google Wave web app compatible with iPhone
Hidden iPhone compatibility features have been found in Google Wave, reports say. Wave is used to merge e-mail, wikis, instant messaging and social networking, and is currently in its beta stages. Native Blu-ray Playback in Mac OS X: Right Owners Block Implementation
One of our sources close to the on-going negotiation (started end of 2007) between Apple and the ACACS LA, just informed us about the current status of those talks, and why we should not have so much expectations.After having struggled with implementing security (DRM) at the Kernel level, Apple keeps pressuring all patent owners of those technologies in order to obtain a one-for-all (understand unique) licensing contract covering all aspects related to Blu-ray technology. This is far from being an easy task, as it implies several companies such as Sony, but also Microsoft (for the VC-1), and all right owners for the associated protections (DRM & Co). It would be easier for Apple to release an authoring/editing Blu-ray application than to get all parties to agree of licensing for a BD player included in Mac OS X Indeed, an authoring BD application would not need to have VC-1 encoding nor DRM implemented.
So, only a miracle could unlock the current discussion and allow App

A minor revision of the iPhone 3GS is now shipping with a new bootrom, preventing the use of somecurrent jailbreaking techniques, hackers claim. So, anyone who doesn’t yet believe Apple intends shoving a camera inside a future iteration of the iPod touch really should chase across to Apple’s tech support pages, where a recently modified document seems to suggest Mac OS X thinks it does.

The Wi-Fi Alliance today unveiled a new standard it hopes will make Wi-Fi the de facto standard for peer-to-peer wireless. Known as Wi-Fi Direct, it will turn any supporting device into an access point and let it auto-discover other compatible hardware nearby. The technique will not only simplify ad hoc networks, reducing the need for a dedicated router, but will let peripherals use Wi-Fi where they couldn't have before: cameras, mice and other devices could work without needing any special setup.

Intel meldet gute Quartalszahlen
Intel hat die Unternehmenszahlen für das abgelaufene Quartal bekannt gegeben. Im dritten Quartal 2009 konnte Intel seinen Umsatz auf sehr gute 9,4 Milliarden US-Dollar steigern. Intels drittes Quartal übertrifft Erwartungen der Analysten
Intel hat im dritten Quartal einen Umsatz von 9,4 Milliarden Dollar erzielt, 828 Millionen Dollar weniger als im Vorjahr. Der Nettogewinn nach GAAP sank um acht Prozent auf 1,9 Milliarden Dollar beziehungsweise 0,33 Dollar je Aktie. Mobiltarife im Umbruch: Nicht zuletzt durch iPhone und iTouch sowie durch die stets leistungsfähigeren Netbooks ist die mobile Nutzung von WWW und weiterer Dienste zum Alltag geworden. Teltarif ist aufgefallen, dass auch die Entwicklung bei den Mobilfunktarifen diese Entwicklung begünstigt: Bei 15 Euro pro Monat beginnen laut Teltarif inhzwischen die Preise einige Flatrates für die mobile Internetnutzung auf Prepaid-Basis. Dabei sind kurze Laufzeiten von nur einem Monat typisch, die ganz nach Bedarf gebucht und ggfs. verlängert werden können.
Da passt es ins Bild, dass der Carrier O2 sogar langjährige Mobilfunkverträge und subventionierte Endgeräte in Deutschland generell vor dem Aus sieht. Der kleinste Wettbewerber auf dem deutschen Markt hat nach Angaben des Deutschlandchefs Rene Schuster beides aus dem Angebot genommen und großen Erfolg damit. Für hochpreisige Smartphones wie Palm Pre (oder iPhone) werden Finanzierungen angeboten.

BlackBerry Storm 2 up to something "this week," socially promiscuous in November
The New York Times has a lengthy piece on RIM's and Verizon's failed attempt to upset the iPhone's dominance with the BlackBerry Storm launch. Interesting, but not as interesting as this little nugget: "This week, Verizon and R.I.M. are trying again with a Storm do-over, the Storm 2." What that means, isn't exactly clear but it would seem to point to an official Storm 2 announcement this week, possibly today. Bootrom-Update verhindert 3GS-Jailbreak, blackra1n für Mac erschienen
Aktuell ausgelieferte iPhone 3GS-Modelle sind mit einem aktualisierten BootROM ausgestattet, welches eine für den Jailbreak notwendige Lücke nicht mehr aufweist. Wenn die Berichte stimmen, so war Apple auf Einkaufstour und hat für 10 bis 30 Millionen Dollar EditGrid übernommen. Oktober-Patchday: Microsoft schließt erste kritische Lücke in Windows 7
Microsoft hat wie angekündigt an seinem Oktober-Patchday 13 Sicherheitsbulletins veröffentlicht, die 34 Schwachstellen beschreiben. Das ist die höchste Zahl an Updates seit Einführung der monatlichen Patchdays im Oktober 2003. Eine der Aktualisierungen schließt die erste als "kritisch" eingestufte Lücke in Windows 7. Battle.net-Account wird für alle Blizzard-Spiele Pflicht
Bislang war die Umstellung eines World of Warcraft-Accounts auf einen battle.net-Account freiwillig. Ab 12. Dezember jedoch muss sich jeder Spieler, der weiterhin Abenteuerausflüge auf Azeroth, Nordend oder der Scherbenwelt unternehmen will, zwingend über das battle.net einloggen. Gerüchte um Radioempfang für iPhone und iPod touch

Nach Informationen des chinesischen Apple-Blogs Apple4us hat der Mac-Hersteller die Online-Tabellenkalkulation EditGrid aus dem Unternehmen Team and Concepts aus Hong Kong übernommen. Be Careful with Manufacturer's Branded External HDs
As you or other users already done it in the past when purchasing a new external HD for its computer, one tends to switch the external unit with the internal one in order to offer more capacity to the computer. This is especially true for notebooks. According to the recent story published by a Mac user, you should pay attention when purchasing HD manufacturer's own products. The unit was an external HD, the Western Digital Passport 3.5", however when opening the case, one quickly gets disappointed:
AS with 2.5" models, this HD does not feature any SATA interface, but has a USB 2.0 interface directly soldered on it. This is not a rare case, and it is a rather new strategy developed by HD manufacturers to develop their own ports to save money by reducing cost on components (here SATA bridge).

Apple releasing new iPhone 3GS units with un-jailbreakable boot-ROMs?
It looks like the cat and mouse game continues. According to MuscleNerd and the iPhone Dev Crew, a new BootROM called iBoot-359.3.2, is appearing in new iPhone 3GS units that is resistant to the 24kpwn exploit used by the Dev-Team and others to jailbreak the iPhone. At this point, and in the immediate future, there doesn't look to be a jailbreak for this ROM.
But, you know how this works. Give it a month or so and we'll probably be back to jailbreaking again. In the meantime, refurbished iPhone 3GSes are going to be the hot item.

"Commercial-free" Windows-branded Family Guy episode planned for November.
Interesting marketing strategy here. They do a full episode of the Family Guy-type comedy based on a Windows 7 story line (Family Guy also has an iPhone App). The show won't have any commercials because it is bought and paid for by Microsoft. Kind of blurring the lines between entertainment and advertising. It will be interesting to see how Microsoft does with this strategy.

A bug that has become famous under Snow Leopard
A bug that has been around for a little while is now doing the rounds of Internet. It affects Snow Leopard and can cause a total loss of data as Tobias tells us:
This morning, I login to my guest account under Snow Leopard and after having finished I go on my admin account, I realized that none of my files are there, no music, no documents, no bookmarks etc…. ! I do not panic, I have made a time machine backup 2 day ago, I make several Internet searches and find that I am not alone in this case and that Snow Leopard has a bug. Thus I advise to make a backup and to deactivate your guest account and to create a standard account without a password if you are running Snow Leopard.
The bug occurs under particular conditions. It is necessary to have made an updated from Leopard to Snow Leopard and that a guest account was configured under 10.5. After this transition to Snow Leopard, the bug happens if one logs into this infamous guest acco

SanDisk Releases MLC 4-bits-based Products
As we already mentioned it, MCL memory chips is currently found in most memory cards and SSD and is based on 2-bits cell. The technology is evolving, and one can start storing 3 to 4 bits per cell. SanDisk announced the availability of products based on MLC X4 cell. This memory engraved at 43 nm will initially be used in SDHC and Memory Sticks (8 and 16 GB). The main goal is not to improve capacity but rather to offer cheaper products with a bigger margin.However, it remains unclear what would be the performance levels in reading and writing modes of such memory. According to recent reports, such chips would not be fast enough to end up in SSDs. The reliability of the MLC X4 is still questioned, as higher density is usually synonym of shorter lifetime. Flip Video today countered the threat of the iPod nano as a camcorder by launching a redesigned Flip Mino HD. Small town Apple Store opening scheduled for Saturday
The new Apple Store in Manhasset, New York is scheduled to have its grand opening this Saturday October 17th at 10 o'clock. Although the town only has a population of 8,300, the location seems ideal considering the area has an average household income of $125,240 per year --among the 10 highest incomes for any existing Apple Store Location, according to ifoAppleStore. Nikon D3s leaked by UK press, expected to ship December with impressive ISO range, £4,200 price tag
Impending Nikon announcements? You don't have to tell the British Journal of Photography, who today published an article dated for tomorrow (oops!) all about its time with the as-of-yet unannounced D3s. Apple says iTunes LPs don't cost labels $10,000, will be available to indies
Well, that $10,000 "production fee" Apple was said to be charging labels for iTunes LPs certainly seemed a little over the the top in more ways than one, and it looks like the company has now come out and denied that it's the case at all, saying flat out that "there is no production fee charged by Apple." What's more, it also says that iTunes LPs will in fact be available to indie labels, noting that it's "releasing the open specs for iTunes LP soon, allowing both major and indie labels to create their own." Nintendo DS sequel may use NVIDIA GPU, rival iPod
Nintendo's next-generation DS may be powerful enough to rival the current iPod touch in terms of power if a purported source is accurate. New SAS Drives from Hitachi
Despite performance levels of SSDs, disk-based HD manufacturers keep releasing new products, especially high -performance SDS drives. The new series from Hitachi offers 15,000 rpm drives:
UltraStar 15K600: 3.5" with a maximum capacity of 600 GB.
UltraStar C15K147: 2.5" with a maximum capacity of 147 GB.
Both drives feature 64 MB of cache memory. As you might have noticed it, 2.5" drives are getting more and more market share on the server-dedicated HD market. Their capacity is often enough for most usage and they drain much less power than their 3.5" brothers. The latter point is a parameter getting more and more importance for data centers, when one needs to safe on energy and/or cooling system.

If you don't want to risk losing all your data, don't enable a "guest" account, and don't log into one. (And backups are a really good thing, but here's a recovery procedure, too.)

Youth survey claims Jobs as top celebrity entrepreneur
Apple executive Steve Jobs is the most admired celebrity entrepreneur in the US, at least amongst tweens and teenagers, claims the youth organization Junior Achievement. The group recently surveyed 1,000 people aged 12 to 17, asking them to pick a name from a predefined list. Jobs was chosen by 35 percent of respondents, beating out talk show host Oprah Winfrey at 25 percent, and skateboarder Tony Hawk at 16 percent. Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg attained 10 percent.
