Razer outs higher-resolution DeathAdder optical mouse
Gaming peripherals maker Razer has recently unveiled an updated version of its DeathAdder mouse with a higher resolution optical sensor, now capable of 3500dpi instead of 1800dpi. The updated DeathAdder has five customizable buttons and its sensitivity can be adjusted in real time. The Death Adder is compatible with both Windows and Mac operating systems.

Poll: Has your Zune HD screen been unresponsive?
While penning our Zune HD review, we were initially quite baffled by our inability to do much of anything with it after installing Microsoft's newest firmware update. Our concern had been properly kiboshed by assurances from the company that we'd gotten a fluke unit and by the properly working replacement we received for to finish the review with. Now, however, it seems as if we weren't alone in our glass cage of emotion, with gaggles of irate Zune HD users emerging from the woodwork in order to express their disappointment online. RIM ships record 8.3m BlackBerries in summer
Research in Motion this afternoon claimed breakthrough results for its summer fiscal quarter. The company said it shipped about 8.3 million BlackBerries between June and August, beating its previous record of 7.8 million. Just under half, or 3.8 million, involved new BlackBerry accounts and therefore likely to be new BlackBerry users. About 32 million BlackBerry accounts are active.

Zanily enough, nearly three full years have passed since Razer first introduced what would eventually become one of its best-selling gaming mice, so it goes without saying that the aging DeathAdder was due for an update. For those looking for a clean cut, straight-up gaming mouse to use between the hours of 10PM and 5:30AM, this revamped critter might just fit the bill. LaCie and ATTO collaborate on enterprise storage devices
ATTO and LaCie have announced a new partnership to deliver enterprise-level storage systems. The collaboration pairs ATTO's ExpressSAS R380 SAS/SATA host adapter with LaCie's 12big Rack Serial, along with the Celerity FC-42ES Fibre Channel host adapter and the 12big Rack Fibre storage system. Sept. 18th weekend sees sharp spike in app approvals
An unusually large number of iPhone apps were approved on the weekend of September 18th, one website observes. AppShopper remarks that in monitoring trends at the App Store, it noticed 1,394 titles premiering on the 18th alone, followed by another 928 on the 19th. By the 20th figures had dropped to a relatively normal level, just 298 apps.

Only minority of iPhone, iPod owners using 3.1 firmware
A relatively small number of iPhone and iPod touch owners are actually using the latest firmware, says AdMob. The advertising firm notes that in tracking ad requests made between September 15th and the 22nd, only 23 percent of devices were observed using iPhone 3.1. The figure is nevertheless described as representing a "significant uptake" compared to other firmware releases. The v3.1 update was only launched on September 9th.

$4,000 Alienware Aurora ALX benchmarked: domination this world has never seen

Viliv S10 Blade netvertible hands-on at IDF
Viliv has one of the best-looking convertible tablets we've ever seen here at IDF, the new S10 Blade. It's actually quite striking in person -- it's thin and light, while still offering a convertible touchscreen and a decent keyboard. Sadly the version pictured here has a pretty slow single-touch resistive touchscreen and will be limited to Windows 7 Starter when it launches in November for around $570, but we're told that a multitouch resistive model will hit early next year with Windows 7 Home Premium for around $700. We'll see if that one has the functionality to back up these hot looks when it hits -- but for now, check the rest of the pics in the gallery.

Intel set-top chip decodes dual 1080p, handles 3D
Intel at its third-day IDF keynote unveiled a new media system-on-a-chip (SoC) that should bring advanced media features to networked media hubs and TVs. The CE4100 is Intel's first all-in-one processor based on its Atom architecture and is made on a much smaller, more efficient 45 nanometer process than the Pentium M- and 65nm-based CE3100. These and a new hardware decoder give it enough power to render two simultaneous 1080p video streams, even in the more demanding H.264 format, and to render 3D graphics for the menu system or games.

Blizzard aktualisiert Warcraft 3 auf Version 1.24b

AppleInsider sees new iMacs within a month
Appleinsider has heard that Apple will refresh its iMac line in the next few weeks. They cite unamed sources who say unamed upgrades will be coming. They do think that the iMacs will become thinner (why?) and "classier" (what?). They speculate that there will be Blu-Ray and some audio improvements (Dobly surround?) as well.
All iMacs are currently selling with an under 24-hour lead time at the Apple Store and only command a $30 or so discount at Amazon.

MIT researchers tout progress with retinal implant - yes, it comes with a visor
As impressive as that tooth-eye implant was, we're guessing most folks had something more like this in mind when they considered the future of sight restoration. While it's still a bit early in development, and has yet to actually be implanted in anyone, this new retinal implant certainly seems to have the researchers at MIT excited, who say that tests with blind patients could begin within the next three years. Shutterfly 2.0 expands sharing, account options
Shutterfly has released v2.0 of its self-titled iPhone application. The software is tied to the company's image-hosting service, and allows users to view, submit and manage photos. The update lets users e-mail slideshow invitations to anyone in their contact list, or post images from a Shutterfly account to a Shutterfly Share website. Files hosted with the service can now be downloaded back to an iPhone or iPod.

Microsoft opening café in Paris to build excitement for Windows 7
You know what the French love? Cafés. They love them, so much, apparently, that Microsoft has decided to open one in the heart of Paris to drum up excitement about Windows 7. Intel announces Atom CE4100 for insanely powerful cable boxes and Blu-ray players
Intel's CE3100 media chip has been behind some of the cooler demos they've done here at IDF, and it's just gotten a big brother, the Atom CE4100. As you'd expect, the big change is the replacement of the CE3100's Pentium M core with an Atom core, but this thing is actually kind of a monster -- it can decode two 1080p video streams with various high-end audio codecs, it adds MPEG-4 support and 3D graphics capability, and it can even capture uncompressed 1080p video. Time Warner launches own 50Mbps cable Internet
Time Warner today became one of the last major US cable providers to offer some form of DOCSIS 3.0-based Internet service. The initial deployment gives customers 50Mbps downloads and 5Mbps uploads for the same $100 monthly rate as similar offerings from Comcast and others. Early service is so far only available in parts of New York City, including Manhattan below 79th Street, parts of Queens, and Staten Island.

TomTom clears up iPhone car kit slip: £99.99 for the hardware alone, app sold separately
Oh, brother. TomTom just hit us up with the real details on its iPhone car kit slip this morning, and we've got a feeling you won't like what it has to say. It confessed that the posting was indeed a mistake, and thus, the pricing was also incorrect. If you'll recall (c'mon, it wasn't that long ago), the Apple store listing explained that the £99.99 car kit included the iPhone app, when in reality, that price definitely does not include the app. Jump on past the break for TomTom's official statement, which now curiously states that the "iPhone 2G" will be compatible with the car kit, yet doesn't mention the iPod touch at all.

BooCamp HFS+ Drivers: Potentially Dangerous!?
With Snow Leopard, Apple updated BootCamp to version 3. In addition to new hardware drivers, an expected improvement was the support for HFS+ partition while running Windows: mounting, writing and reading such volumes (similarly to what MacDrive does).
However according some of our team members, the reliability of this new function is questionable. If you are used to store applications as an ISO image file, on a large HFS+ partition this could be an issue. Unfortunately because this technique of ISO storage is easy and handy as it lets you save on large HDs dozen of CDs at convenience and quickly accessible.
With BootCamp 3, such usage is buggy, and despite being always mounted , the ISO image has either:- corrupted installer- corruption of the installed .exe file- the installation application can be launched or even completed, but the application systematically crashes.
After running some test, it turns out that the BootCamp 3 drivers for HFS+ are the faulty guy:

Piper raises Apple price target to $235
Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster has raised his price target for Apple stock from $186 to $235, basing the decision on newly-adopted GAAP accounting rules. While the change has been anticipated since earlier this month, Munster points out new details, such as discrepancies between accounting requirements and the flow of real iPhone revenue. While 90 percent of an iPhone's value is said to be generated at the time of sale, Apple was previously limited to recognizing 12.5 percent of each sale in its GAAP ledgers.

Palm Pre to ship to O2 in UK, Europe mid-October
O2 today finally committed to specific dates for launching the Palm Pre in Europe. The multi-touch smartphone should ship in the UK and Ireland on October 16th and Germany on October 13th. While prices vary by area, UK pricing notably matches the iPhone's and will give the phone away for free on any voice/data plan, which starts from £34 a month. Those who prefer shorter 18-month contracts can get the phone for free with a £44 or £73 monthly rate.

News: FASB approves proposed accounting rule change
The United States Financial Accounting Standards Board has approved an accounting rule change that will allow Apple to abandon its practice of subscription accounting for the iPhone. Currently, Apple defers its iPhone revenue over two years to allow for free software updates to be delivered over the life of the cellular contract, and does the same for Apple TV; the new rule would allow the company to recognize more, if not all, of that revenue up…

Market research firm Interpret recently made some discoveries about public perception of smartphones that should shock, surprise, and amaze you. Wacom on Thursday morning put out multiple tablets that signal a gradual break away from the company's pen-only approach. The Bamboo Touch, Bamboo Pen & Touch, Bamboo Fun and Bamboo Craft all have a multi-touch surface used for navigation, ranging from basic moves like a basic tap select or mouse-like input to two-finger pinching for zoom and twisting to rotate images. AT&T is at Red Alert as management and technical staff scurry in an attempt to make Friday’s iPhone MMS messaging roll-out as flawless as possible, as the company seeks to answer network critics.

OS X 10.6: In Exposé per Tastatur das Fenster auswählen
Exposé in OS X 10.6 lässt die Auswahl des gesuchten Fensters per Tastatur-Eingabe zu.
So ist nicht nur durch die Pfeiltasten eine Schnellauswahl möglich, sondern auch die Eingabe des gesuchten Fenster/Dokumentnamens auf der Tastatur bringt das Fenster mit entsprechendem Namen in die Auswahl.
Ein Druck auf Enter und das Fenster kommt in den Vordergrund - ein Klick mit der Maus (ohne Bewegen des Mauszeigers), funktioniert in diesem Falle auch.
Gerade bei vielen geöffneten Dokumenten kann diese Funktion helfen und unterscheidet auch den kompletten Namen. So kann das “Dokument 1″ oder das “Dokument 2″ durch schnelles Eintippen des Namens, einer Leerstelle und der gewünschten Zahl z.B. ebenfalls voneinander differenziert werden.

Red Hat meldet erneut Umsatz- und Gewinnsteigerung
Red Hat hat seinen Umsatz im zweiten Quartal des Fiskaljahres 2010 (bis 31. August) gegenüber dem Vorjahr um zwölf Prozent auf 183,6 Millionen Dollar gesteigert. Security-Spezialist Zu Trend Micro bietet bereits seit April mit Trend Smart Surfing eine kostenlose App als "ersten sicheren Browser, der ein smarteres Surferlebnis mit dem Apple iPhone und iPod touch ohne Sicherheitsrisiko bietet". We're still not entirely sold on the intersection of gadgets and wood. Nevertheless, companies keep pumping out the concepts in response to our greener times. Bericht: Deutsche Telekom sucht Partner für 4G-Netz in USA

Wer im Fitness-Studio Musik hören will, sollte sich den Kauf eines neuen iPod nano gut überlegen. Dies meint laut einem Zeitungsbericht zumindest die US-Fitness-Kette "Life Time". USB forum Supports Apple in its Dispute vs. Palm
To force the compatibility of its Pré with iTunes, Palm have been using Apple's unique identifier assigned by to the company by the USB Forum. This identifier is different for ALL USB device manufacturers and according to the contract it is forbidden the use identifier belonging to another company. To avoid any legal issue, Palm informed the USB Forum that it had used this trick to force iTunes to recognize its Pré as an iPod. The USB Forum did not initially react, but finally released its judgment and considers Palm as guilty of using third party USB identifier in its device and violating regulations. In addition, the USB Forum does not think that Apple's strategy of using the USB identifier as an ID lock to manage its iPod/iPhone/iTunes ecosystem is against USB Forum regulations. Palm will have to respond to this statement and find a new strategy to make the Pré compatible with iTunes, as Apple strengthen the protection with iTunes 9.

Das USB Implementers Forum (USB-IF) hat Apples Position im Streit mit Palm um die Mediensynchronisation des Pre mithilfe von iTunes gestützt. Picasa 3.5: Bessere Gesichtserkennung, Geotagging
Google hat die Bildverwaltung Picasa auf die Version 3.5 aktualisiert. Die Mac-Version verliert gleichzeitig den Status einer Beta-Version. Schwerpunkt des Updates sind Verbesserungen bei der Gesichtserkennung und dem Geotagging, die beide so ähnlich wie in iPhoto 09 arbeiten. Beim ersten Start indexiert Picasa nicht nur die Fotos, sondern sucht auch nach Gesichtern und gruppiert ähnliche zusammen. BVDW: Mobile Kampagnen um die Hälfte gewachsen
Die Anzahl mobiler Kampagnen stieg im ersten Halbjahr 2009 um über 50 Prozent, verglichen mit dem Vorjahreszeitraum. Dies geht aus einer Erhebung des Mobile Advertising Circle (MAC) im Bundesverband Digitale Wirtschaft (BVDW) hervor. So wurden bereits 360 Mobile-Kampagnen geschaltet - dies entspricht nach einem halben Jahr 74 Prozent der Gesamtkampagnenzahl aus 2008. Im Durchschnitt lief eine Kampagne auf drei Mobile-Portalen.
Auch die Anzahl der Werbetreibenden ist 2009, verglichen mit dem ersten Halbjahr 2008, von 88 auf 109 um 24 Prozent gestiegen. Durchschnittlich wurden 1,65 Mobile-Kampagnen pro Quartal von jedem Werbetreibenden umgesetzt. 2008 lag dieses Verhältnis noch bei einer Kampagne pro Quartal. Insgesamt haben 42 Werbetreibende auch schon 2008 mobil geworben, was für die Wirksamkeit des Mediums Mobile spricht. PS3 Slim sells 1 million units in 3 weeks, chin chin!
We're not big into tracking sales figures but a million consoles sold is pretty notable. Especially when your 3 year-old console achieves that number in just 3 weeks. Of course, the sale bump is the result of the PS3 receiving a price adjustment, some minor cosmetic slimming, and internal adjustments that most notably decreased power draw (and noise). Good on ya Sony. But we'd love to see auction sales statistics for the same three weeks -- we expect there was an appreciable uptick in demand for first gen consoles with hardware-based PS2 emulation, SACD playback, and 4x USB ports immediately after the PS3 Slim was announced, and its mysteries revealed.Filed under: Gaming

13 PS3 motion control games confirmed for next year, special edition Biohazard 5 coming Spring 2010
Sure, the company's Tokyo Game Show keynote was a bit of a bore, but in a second press conference for Japanese media, Sony did what it could to make up for it by revealing Biohazard 5: Alternative Edition, the first PS3 title we've heard of to support the new motion controllers -- and better still, it's due out Spring 2010. Also confirmed is the existence of 13 first-party titles with motion support coming at some point next year, including Pain, and Flower. Both Biohazard 5 and a LittleBigPlanet tech demo were shown on stage, and pics from the announcement are being uploaded now, so stay tuned!

Nintendo finally confirms new $199 Wii price
After being stuck so long at $249, we can hardly believe the Wii is "pulling a PS3" and going down in price at last -- outside of the insurmountable mountains of evidence we had of the price drop before Nintendo could get around to confirming it, of course. Strata Foto 3D CX 2 adds support for multiple image sources
Strata has released an update to Foto 3D, its software for creating 3D models from images. CX 2 adds the ability to take image sets from video, along with other sources such as aerial photographs or extremely large files. On mobile apps, Palm and Google show history repeats itself
It’s not just Apple and AT&T who have problems delivering the needs of mobile users, both Google and Palm have also let the ball slip in recent days.
Strike one: Google, which yesterday introduced real time “push” Gmail sync for the iPhone. Seems too many iPhone users wanted this feature, with Dan Frommer helpfully pointing out a deluge of frustrated user comments on Google’s blog pages and Twitter.

FASB approves accounting changes that will allow Apple to realize revenue sooner
Call your broker! The FASB has changed its accounting rules this morning, allowing Apple to realize the revenue from its iPhones and AppleTV devices at purchase rather than slowly over two years. It also allows Apple to stop charging nominal fees for iPod Touch software updates - when it doesn't necessarily want to. AAPL is up almost 4 points on the day.

Instinct HD spotted with box, looking chubbier than ever
Look, we enjoy a bit of excessive caloric intake now and again ourselves, but the much-leaked Instinct HD really seems to have let itself go. We just got pics of the device up against a box, and the word is it "feels like a bloated s30 in your hand and that is not meant as a compliment." Ouch. The instructions apparently say that you can plug an HDMI cable into the phone somehow, but so far all that's been discovered is the standard proprietary power jack -- so that's odd, but at least we have our first hint at some sort of "HD" functionality. PS3 Motion Controller confirmed for next spring, finally ready for its close-ups
We've heard plenty about Sony's PS3 Motion Controller, but we hadn't actually seen a press shot of it until now. Looks pretty PlayStation-ey, wouldn't you say? Sony has also confirmed that spring 2010 is the launch window (with those rumors of a March date in Japan floating around). It can't come soon enough! Sony plans to keep PSP downloads at 'pricing parity,' whatever that means
Here's a great scenario for you, if you happen to be Sony's wallet: charge $250 for a handheld console without a physical game media option, and then charge on average $5 more for downloaded titles than they go for at retail, since you have zero competition in the download space. That seems to be SCEA's definition of "price parity" right now for the PSP, though in Japan downloadable titles have been on average slightly cheaper than their physical counterparts. Images emerge of Microsoft's own phones
A handful of images have leaked of what are widely believed to be the first Microsoft-branded phones. The renderings slipped out by Gizmodo appear to confirm the Turtle, a vertical QWERTY slider that also appears to have a touchscreen, as well as the Pure, a more conventional touchscreen with a side-sliding keyboard. Both have a very rounded design influenced by Sidekick creator Danger, which Microsoft bought out last year, and an interface mockup that borrows heavily from the visual style of the Zune HD.

It looks likes someone at Microsoft is terribly sloppy with where they leave their important files sitting around. Gizmodo has gotten its hands on two images allegedly of the Pink smartphones that we've been hearing about lately. If you believe your orbs, these represent two distinct iterations of devices which the big M is looking at. Microsoft, i4i trade shots in lawsuit appeal
Microsoft and i4i are once again squaring off in court in their ongoing legal battle over a patent regarding custom XML used in Microsoft Word is continuing, with both sides confident of their eventual victory. At a recent appeal, i4i made a statement that said Microsoft used the same arguments it has made unsuccessfully at the original trial.
