500 GB at 7200 rpm; Toshiba enter the fray
Trailing behind most of its competitors, Toshiba has now announced a hard drive of 500 GB revolving with 7200 rpm and equipped with 16 MB of cache.
All the manufacturers thus have now powerful disks of this capacity while the models of 640 GB in general spin at 5400 rpm. The price drops of these products should soon accelerate, at least for all of those that are really available.

Palm announces first quarter results: $2.8m profit on $68m revenue
Palm just announced its first quarter results -- the first to really include numbers from the Pre -- and they're positive, with a $2.8m profit on $68m in revenue. Actually, that's a little low, since Palm uses the same sort of subscription accounting for the Pre as Apple does for the iPhone, so the unofficial numbers are higher: $100.6m profit on $360.7m in revenue. Although Palm wouldn't include break out specific sales data, they did say that the "vast majority" of the 823,000 phones they sold in Q1 were Pres, so take that as you will. Dell curiously announces ST2210 and ST2310 LCD monitors
Oh, Dell. Oftentimes we wonder if you guys even want consumers to know that you've got new kit for them to ogle. Shortly after we discovered that the ST2410 LCD monitor was both a) real and b) on sale, we're now having to turn to YouTube in order to catch wind that two smaller models have also been announced to accompany it. LogMeIn CEO claims private line for App Store questions
Apple is giving special support treatment to at least one iPhone developer, according to the latter party's CEO. Mike Simon of LogMeIn has revealed that he now has a private phone number he can call regarding Ignition, the company's remote access app. The software has an unusually high price of $30, and is said to have generated at least $1 million for LogMeIn since its December introduction.

AT&T CEO: 7.2Mbs wireless in 6 major markets by year end
Randall L. Stephenson spoke at today's Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference. He noted among other things that AT&T would open up 7.2Mbs in six major markets by the end of 2009. The iPhone 3GS will be able to take advantage of this speed while older iPhones will be stuck with 3.6Mbs. As for cities that are going to get updated? We know Chicago is wired up and ready to go but who else gets to go 7.2?

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen sells LTE spectrum to AT&T
Here's one straight from the depths of left field. If you'll recall, Microsoft's co-founder Paul Allen was considering buying a bit of spectrum from the 700MHz auction after founding Vulcan Spectrum LLC. Evidently, the guy's bid ended in a win, but he's obviously not so keen on getting in on the flagging MVNO business. According to a document filed with the FCC, Allen has agreed to sell the licenses he owns -- which cover sections of Oregon and Washington -- to AT&T, though the carrier isn't disclosing financial terms. Haiku: BeOS ist wiederauferstanden

Ever since Dash folded, the future has been murky at best for any GPS company hoping to rope consumers in by promising real-time information on the face of their navigator. Snow Leopard ist ein Kassenschlager
Apples jüngstes Betriebssystem ist erst seit zwei Wochen auf dem Markt und bricht bereits alle Rekorde: Laut einer Analyse des Marktforschungsunternehmens NPD ist Snow Leopard in den ersten beiden Verkaufswochen doppelt so oft über den Ladentisch gegangen wie einst Leopard. Kurzreview: Design-Soundsystem Luna 5 von Edifier
Das iPod-Soundsystem Luna 5 (iF500) von Edifier sticht unweigerlich ins Auge. Der Lautsprecher trohnt als große Halbkugel über dem in ein berührungsempfindliches Bedienfeld eingelassenen iPod-Dock und garantiert interessierte Nachfragen von Freunden und Besuchern.
Und auch vom Klang her kann sich das Gerät durchaus sehen lassen. Ein 32 Watt-Subwoofer sorgt in Verbindung mint zwei 10 Watt-Satelliten für warmen und vollen Klang. Als Audioquelle werden neben dem integrierten UKW-Radio angedockte iPods und iPhones (allerdings nicht zertifiziert und mit entsprechender Warnmeldung) sowie über einen 2,5 mm AUX-Eingang an der Gerätevorderseite angeschlossene externe Geräte akzeptiert - entsprechende Kabel von 2,5 mm auf 3,5 mm Klinke sowie auf Cinch liegen erfreulicherweise bei.

Cases on display at the IFA expo in Berlin may further validate reports of new iPods being announced next week. Best Buy carrying new iPod nano, touch cases early
Best Buy on Tuesday inadvertently tipped off Apple's plans for tomorrow by posting entries for unreleased iPods. Belkin and Griffin cases for the fifth-generation iPod nano and third-generation iPod touch have appeared and support the notion that at least these two will be updated at Apple's special event on Wednesday. Beatles not coming to iTunes on September 9th?
Apple will not announce availability of The Beatles' back catalog come September 9th, says a source claimed to be familiar with the band's plans. So when Apple touted app arranging as a new in iTunes feature this week we got very excited. We've spent the last three days with iTunes 9 and the new app arranging feature. Audiovox to offer FLO TV viewing in cars
Audiovox has partnered up with FLO TV to bring the latter's live mobile TV service to cars, the two companies announced on Thursday. FLO TV (formerly MedaiFLO) was offered to mobile phone subscribers, and the new service, called FLO TV Auto Entertainment, will be offered before the end of 2009 through 12,000 new car dealers. Audiovox will supply the hardware to enable this, including a small antenna that is no bigger than a human hand.

It appears that instead of selling games, Microsoft's ZuneHD strategy is to place advertising in the apps before they load - like pre-mercials. These are full videos that take up space on your Zune Flash storage, not just your friendly Malware banner ads.

Epson on Thursday announced it will soon add to its home entertainment projector lineup with the MovieMate 60 and PowerLite Home Cinema 705HD. The 3LCD MovieMate 60 is being billed as the lightest and brightest in Epson's all-in-one projector offerings, with 2,000 lumens of brightness. There is also a built-in CD and DVD player, along with a microphone input and stereo speakers. Connections include common standard definition ports as well as HDMI.

Toshiba ships dynadock U wireless USB notebook hub
Toshiba on Thursday began shipping a new version of the dynadock U as its first wireless docking station for notebooks. The device uses an ultra wideband link to connect as many as six USB devices at once but also has enough bandwidth for Ethernet, wireless audio and video: it can put out up to a 1920x1200 image on a secondary DVI or VGA display and 7.1-channel audio through speakers attached to the dock. Sound also works in both directions and will let webcams send audio over the wireless link.

Autodesk brings out SketchBook Mobile for iPhone
Autodesk has released SketchBook Mobile, a new app for the iPhone and iPod touch. The title uses the same engine as the desktop-based SketchBook Pro, and attempts to imitate many of its illustration functions. LG on Thursday announced the release of its WIDEBOOK family of notebooks, made up of the R380, R460, R480, R560, and R580. All have a 16:9 HD LED-backlit display and a choice of Intel Core 2 Duo CPUs. Windows Mobile may have been dealt a blow through a quiet shutdown of i-mate, an investigation has found. Toshiba gibt Geschäft mit Projektoren auf
Gerd Holl, General Manager der Toshiba Europe GmbH, hat auf Anfrage bestätigt, dass das japanische Unternehmen den Geschäftsbereich Projektoren Ende September aufgeben wird. Den Stein ins Rollen gebracht hatte ein Bericht des "Swiss IT-Magazin". Das Blatt wollte eine Übersicht zum Markt für Projektoren erstellen und hatte dazu auch Toshiba angefragt. Der Konzern hatte dankend abgelehnt, da er zum ersten Oktober sowohl die Herstellung als auch den Vertrieb von Projektoren einstellen werde. Über die Gründe konnten die Schweizer aber zunächst nur spekulieren.

iTunes 9 creating iPod classic conflicts
The recently-launched iTunes 9 update is causing a variety of problems for iPod classic owners, comments on Apple's support forums suggest. Issues primarily revolve around sync, to the extent that a number of people complain they are unable to to sync media at all. Some Classics may be ejected automatically when connected via USB, while others may cause crashes, or fail to be detected by iTunes, preventing any form of interaction including firmware updates.

MSI bows X-Slim X410 with Athlon Neo
MSI this morning took the X-Slim line into AMD's territory by officially launching the X410. The crossover, 14-inch ultraportable uses the lower end of AMD's Congo ultrathin platform and uses both an Athlon Neo processor and the newer chipset to reportedly get twice as much battery life as a regular 14-inch notebook, although MSI is silent on actual numbers. Oracle verzeichnet erneut Umsatzrückgang
Im ersten Geschäftsquartal des Fiskaljahres 2010 (bis 31. August) hat Oracle aufgrund sinkender Software-Erlöse und negativer Währungseffekte erneut einen Umsatzrückgang hinnehmen müssen. Der GAAP-Umsatz schrumpfte wie im Vorquartal gegenüber dem Vergleichszeitraum des Vojahres um 5 Prozent und liegt nun bei 5,1 Milliarden Dollar. Dafür stieg der GAAP-Nettogewinn um 4 Prozent auf 1,1 Milliarden Dollar oder 0,22 Dollar je Aktie. Das geht aus den gestern nach Börsenschluss veröffentlichten Zahlen (PDF) des Software-Konzerns hervor.

Music groups want royalties from iTunes samples, more
Music royalty groups ASCAP and BMI are pressing online music stores like Apple's iTunes to pay performance fees not only for actual song downloads but also videos and even the 30-second samples used to preview the music in advance. While these stores already pay the distribution fees for the songs themselves, ASCAP, BMI and labels claim that just downloading and playing the content also counts as a live performance and should bring an extra fee.

Samsung Omnia line gets Win Mobile 6.5, new B7330
Samsung today pledged itself to Windows Mobile with both a major software update and a new phone. All of its current Windows Mobile devices, including the Omnia II I8000, Omnia Lite B7300, Omnia Pro B7610, and Omnia Pro B7320, will be upgraded to Windows Mobile 6.5 for free. The update availability will vary by the carrier but at the earliest should be available sometime after the official debut of the new OS on October 6th.

Sony Ericsson is touring the world’s developers to rustle up support for application-building for its devices, and is promising to beat Apple in the creation of a short and transparent Apps approval process.
The company’s head of developer and partner engagement, Christopher David, has promised to create a special approval system for what he terms “tier one” developers. This free scheme promises to get freshly-made apps to market fast, most crucially promising to vet newly-submitted apps “within five days”.

Bing steigert Marktanteil in den USA auf 10,7 Prozent
Microsofts Suchmaschine Bing konnte ihren Marktanteil in den Vereinigten Staaten im August weiter ausbauen. Wie das Marktforschungsinstitut Nielsen meldet, stieg die Zahl der Suchanfragen gegenüber Juli um 22,1 Prozent auf 1,1 Milliarden. Der Marktanteil von Bing liegt in den USA bei 10,7 Prozent.

Toshiba hat mit der MK5056GSY eine schnelle 2,5-Zoll-Festplatte mit 500 GB Kapazität vorgestellt. Alte MB/GB-Berechnung in Snow Leopard wieder herstellen
Für Biologen sicherlich verblüffend, dass ein Schneeleopard anders rechnet als ein Leopard, aber für einige Anwender von Mac OS X 10.6 einfach nur gewöhnungsbedürftig: Snow Leopard berechnet die Kapazität von Massenspeichern auf der Basis von 10, ein KB sind dann 1000 Byte und nicht wie unter Leopard 1024. Festplattenhersteller verwenden schon seit vielen Jahren diese Rechnung, daher die gefühlte Diskrepanz zwischen dem, was auf der Packung zeigt und dem, was der Finder als nutzbaren Speicher zurückliefert.

Navigon bringt Live-Verkehrsinfos aufs iPhone
Mit einem kostenpflichtigen Zusatzpaket lassen sich zukünftig Echtzeit-Informationen zur Verkehrslage innerhalb der iPhone-Navigationslösung MobileNavigator abrufen.
Navigons "Traffic Live"-Services bauen auf verschiedenen Informationsquellen, unter anderem den Daten von Nutzern von Navigon-Produkten auf und sind laut dem in Deutschland angesiedelten Hersteller schneller und präziser als die bei den meisten Navigationslösungen eingesetzten herkömmlichen TMC-Infos. Optimale Voraussetzung für die Nutzung unterwegs ist eine Daten-Flatrate, das entstehende Datenaufkommen soll nach Herstellerinformationen allerdings nur sehr gering sein.
Das Zusatzpaket für die bestehenden iPhone-Lösungen kann voraussichtlich ab der zweiten Oktoberhälfte direkt aus der MobileNavigator-Software gekauft werden und kostet in den ersten vier Wochen nach Erscheinen 19,99, danach 24,99 Euro.

IDC: Netbooks belasten Umsätze der PC-Hersteller

ARM-Chips für das Apple Tablet
ARM hat einen 2GHz Chip mit niedrigem Energiebedarf angekündigt (ARM Cortex-A9-Prozessor) - und schon kommen wieder Gerüchte auf, dass diese ARMs für das Apple Tablet sein könnten. If you knew nothing of Samsung's lineup you might think that they'd just announced five Windows Mobile smartphones, but the reality is much, much less interesting: they've basically announced one (which was already widely known) and whipped up a rebranding and relaunch campaign for the other four. Pentax K-x DSLR now official: 12.4MP, 720p video, coming October for $650
Looks like we didn't have to wait long after today's leak. Pentax has made its not quite entry-level DSLR, the K-x. All the earlier specs have panned out, so we're looking at a 12.4 megapixel CMOS censor, a 200 to 6400 ISO sensitivity expandable to 100 to 12,800, 4.7 frames per second continuous shooting, and 720p HD video at 24 frames per second. Sized up to the K-7, its wider ISO range is the only improvement, otherwise on par in features or lacking, as is in the case of AF / AE, video, and continuous shooting speed. It's due out in October available in black, white, red, or navy blue, with an attractive base price of $650 that nets you a 18-55mm lens.

HP's new DreamScreens pack Pandora and Facebook into a wireless photo frame
Photo frames sure have come a long way -- from back when they were photo frames. The new HP DreamScreen 100 and 130 (which we spotted back in July) pack in 2GB of built-in storage, and all the assorted connectivity for pulling in photos from a camera, drive or networked PC (802.11b/g or Ethernet), but stack on top of that 10,000 internet radio stations, Facebook, Snapfish internet photos, a full-featured music player, Pandora, weather and even a fancy clock. The unit has a built-in speaker, but you'll probably want to use the sound-out jack to get any reasonable enjoyment in listening. After OCZ, Supertalent also unveiled the new version of its PCI Express SSD, aka RAIDDrive V2.0.
This product dedicated to a PCI Express 2.0 8x slot, features an ultra-fast RAID controller (), 512 MB of cache and storage space is either SLC or MLC depending on models. Pentax launches K-x entry DSLR with 720p video
Pentax tonight aggressively tackled the starter DSLR field with an overhaul for its least expensive K series camera. Now using the Japanese naming scheme, the K-x becomes the least expensive DSLR ever to shoot video and records 720p at 24 frames per second. Compared to the K2000 it replaces, it also gets a much improved 12-megapixel CMOS sensor (up from a 10-megapixel CCD) that takes in more light and has a dramatically larger ISO range that normally sits between 200 and 6,400 but can extend to 100 and 12,800 with an override.

You might remember our complaint that the Tour's trackball seemed a bit too recessed -- and while we're not ready to connect the dots just yet, this does seem rather convenient. Microsoft says OEMs pay about $50 for Windows on a $1,000 PC
There's been no shortage of rumors and speculation about how much Microsoft charges OEMs for a copy of Windows over the years, but Microsoft itself has stayed fairly mum on the matter -- until this week, that is. Speaking at the Jefferies Annual Technology Conference, Microsoft exec Charles Songhurst revealed for the first time that the company has "always charged about $50" for a copy of Windows on the average $1,000 PC, or about 5% of the total cost. Songhurst also seems to imply that Microsoft is looking to get about 5% across the board for Windows, meaning that it can rake in some impressive profits on high-end PCs while still being able to offer Windows on the cheap for netbooks or $300 desktops. Clearwire says it's not married to WiMAX for 4G, would be easy to switch
Save possibly for Sprint, no one's pushing WiMAX harder in the US than Clearwire -- but the commitment doesn't run as deep as you might think. Investing billions in a 4G network that goes brashly against the popular LTE grain is a huge gamble since Clearwire and its partners won't be able to throw as much weight around with manufacturers or achieve the same economies of scale that LTE carriers will, but these guys were smart: CEO Bill Morrow claims that the company has unprecedented flexibility built into its infrastructure, and he's willing to switch gears if LTE or something else ends up burying WiMAX down the road.

Pentax K-X DSLR pictures and specs leaked?
Playing coy as to which site was culpable, Photo Rumors claims it managed to nab from some page a handful of pictures and specs of a new Pentax K-X DSLR from some web page, reportedly set to launch tomorrow. Highlights include a 12.4 megapixel CMOS image sensor with stabilization, 720p / 24 frames per second HD video recording, a 2.7-inch LCD screen, and ISO sensitivity ranging from 100 to 12,800. Consider our interest piqued, but unfortunately we've got no indication when this will see the official light of day -- but with press photos propagating somewhere, we're hoping the waiting isn't too much longer.Filed under:

Es behebt mehrere Probleme mit der allgemeinen Zuverlässigkeit.« Zu laden ist das ca. 56MB große Update über die Software-Aktualisierung.
