SteelSeries takes another stab at gaming headsets with Siberia v2
We played with the original Siberia headset from SteelSeries, which was specifically designed to emphasize "gaming noises" like grenade pin pulls and footsteps -- but didn't do much good for listening to anything else. The Siberia Headset v2 looks to solve some of that with slightly larger speakers, an enclosed design to reduce ambient noise, improved frequency response and increased volume. There's also a built-in mic now. We took a listen and found the music listening capabilities much improved, especially in the bass end, but still no challenge for "regular" over the ear headphones. FCC to propose new net neutrality rules disallowing data discrimination
Based on what we're hearing, a slate of soon-to-be-proposed FCC rules may stop the likes of Comcast from discriminating against P2P applications on their networks, and AT&T sure will have a tougher time justifying why it won't let the iPhone's version of SlingPlayer run on 3G while giving WinMo and BlackBerry users all the bandwidth they can handle. T-Mobile starts 21Mbps HSPA+ rollout in Philadelphia, nationwide in 2010
T-Mobile USA's really kicking things into high gear, coming from behind (way behind, actually) on its 3G launch to become the first to bring 21Mbps HSPA+ here -- and possibly the only one to do it, considering that its closest GSM rival is leapfrogging from 7.2Mbps HSPA to LTE. Toshiba dynadock wireless U puts wireless USB to good use at last
We just spotted Toshiba's new wireless U dynadock in the flesh, and guess what: it looks a lot like a dynadock. The good news is that wireless USB makes the whole docking concept a lot more attractive, though we'd much rather have a solution that's integrated into the laptop -- the included wireless USB dongle looks quite precarious, and kind of ruins the whole idea of not having to plug anything in. The $300 pricetag also makes this hard to swallow, but there's a real logic to wireless docking that we hope can expand in the industry as the components become more integrated in laptops, or least a bit more

Apple fires back: "We do not agree with all of the statements made by Google"
Oh, snap! Not an hour after Google published their letter to the FCC stating that Phil Schiller rejected the Google Voice App, Apple responds:
“We do not agree with all of the statements made by Google in their FCC letter. Apple has not rejected the Google Voice application and we continue to discuss it with Google.”
Hope Apple and Google PR people didn't have any big plans this weekend!

Lost home folder after logging in as guest in Snow Leopard: ways to restore
Be aware that Snow Leopard seems to have a problem with how guest accounts are handled. In several cases, people have accidentally logged in to their guest accounts and upon logging out and back into their normal accounts have found their data missing. We reported on this problem in the past, but here are some extra options for restoring the lost home folder from a backup.

According to the French (who we'd like to take this opportunity to thank for Histoire de Melody Nelson), the WinMo 6.5-packin' Xperia X2 (which we got our hot little hands on about two weeks ago) will be hitting store shelves in France "within two months" from now. Mitac takes Tegra to MID-land
We've spotted an early prototype of an upcoming MID from Mitac powered by Tegra and running Windows CE, and we like where it's headed. There are actually a lot of similarities to Mobinnova's smartbook, though we suppose it's more of a Tegra thing: CE with a custom interface on top, emphasis on 720p media playback and output (there's an HDMI jack and TV tuner) and what promises to be an uber-competitive price and good battery life for the form factor. Mitac also plans on selling the thing with a fold-out case / keyboard combo to sweeten the deal. The unnamed device is quite thin, but unfortunately the unit we saw was out of battery -- though NVIDIA assured us it was "really cool" while it worked. Sure guys, sure.

AT&T launching 3G Microcell in some markets in the next few days?
Zacks Investment Research is reporting in a matter-of-fact tone that AT&T's long-rumored, long-desired 3G Microcell femtocell will be hitting some markets "in the next week." The full list of initial launch areas hasn't been disclosed, but Atlanta, San Antonio, Seattle and North Carolina are all specifically mentioned; as you might recall, Sprint restricted the launch of its Airave for some time, too, so limited availability out of the gate wouldn't really come as a surprise. Google says Phil Schiller himself rejected Google Voice from the App Store
It was always curious that Google's response to the FCC inquiry about Google Voice and the App Store had been redacted, but now we're starting to see why -- El Goog and the FCC have just released the full text of the letter, and it flatly contradicts Apple's take on the matter. If you'll remember, Apple claimed that while Google Voice hadn't been approved, it also hadn't been rejected, and that its status was in limbo while the folks in Cupertino "studied" the matter. IDC: Handymarkt in Westeuropa schrumpft um sechs Prozent
Der westeuropäische Handymarkt ist mit einem Minus von sechs Prozent weiter rückläufig. Wie IDC ermittelt hat, ging die Zahl der verkauften Geräte im zweiten Quartal auf 42 Millionen zurück. Im Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres wurden noch 44,6 Millionen abgesetzt. Allerdings stellt die Entwicklung eine Verbesserung gegenüber dem ersten Quartal 2009 dar, in dem die Branche ein Minus von 14 Prozent verzeichnete.

MobileHCI-Fazit: Tendenz zum Zweitdaumen und HoverFlow fürs iPhone
Heute ging die 11. internationale Konferenz Human-Computer Interaction with Mobile Devices and Services, die MobileHCI in Bonn zu Ende. Vier Tage präsentierten und diskutieren rund 300 Teilnehmer aus Wissenschaft und Industrie Konzepte und Ideen zu Einsatz und Bedienung von mobilen Geräten. Bedienkonzepte für Handys und PDAs waren ein Schwerpunkt der vom Fraunhofer-Institut für Angewandte Informationstechnik FIT und der Universität Siegen organisierten Veranstaltung. Beim Thema Smartphones standen Lösungen für eine schnelle, bequeme Texteingabe im Vordergrund. Beispielsweise stellten Forscher aus Georgia einen sog. "Two-Thumb-Charding"-Ansatz vor, bei dem der Benutzer nicht einzelne Tasten drückt, sondern Akkorde greift, also mehrere Tasten gleichzeitig drückt. Diese Methode sei schneller, erfordere aber auch einen höheren Lernaufwand, hieß es. Ginormous Palm Pre shows new Japanese-only 'Contacts' card in Heroes promo
We'll confess -- only a few Engadget staffers are still hanging tight to see if Heroes will ever become the flagship show that it looked to be in season uno, but there's no denying that the whole crew will be watching the premiere that drops on September 21st. DMS Expo zieht trotz Krise zufrieden Bilanz
Zum Ende der vierzehnten DMS EXPO haben die Veranstalter weitgehend zufrieden Bilanz gezogen. An der seit 2006 in Köln stattfindenden Messe beteiligten sich in diesem Jahr 309 Unternehmen, 51 weniger als 2008. Davon stammen 279 aus Deutschland. 30 weitere kamen aus insgesamt 14 anderen Ländern. Nach Angaben der Ausrichter zog es 16.100 Fachbesucher nach Köln. Im Vorjahr waren es noch 19.200 gewesen.

Microsoft verklagt Herausgeber schädlicher Online-Werbung
Microsoft hat bei einem Gericht in Seattle fünf Klagen gegen unbekannte Herausgeber von Malware eingereicht, die mit Schadcode verseuchte Online-Anzeigen platziert haben. Der Softwareanbieter arbeitet schon länger mit Werbetreibenden zusammen, um das sogenannte "Malvertising" zu bekämpfen. Es ist allerdings das erste Mal, dass Microsoft rechtliche Schritte einleitet.

Palm verabschiedet sich von Windows Mobile
Nachdem Palm das Pre mit dem neuen WebOS vorgestellt hatte, war bereits klar, dass das Unternehmen keine neuen Geräte mit seinem bisherigen Palm OS entwickeln wird. Nokia labs is serving up a potentially helpful application for the blind and visually impaired. The beta app makes SMS messages visible through tactile feedback on a Nokia braille reader developed in partnership with Tampere University and the Finnish Federation of the Visually Impaired. Microsoft goes on price attack for Win 7 as OS wars continue
Microsoft continues to attempt to regain the initiative, and is attempting to boost sales of its forthcoming Windows 7 OS by offering a deep discount on the software to students, as it tries to lure them back from the Mac.
The company has announced qualified college and university students can obtain Windows 7 for $30 in the US and £30 in the UK. The OS is available to students for pre-order now and will be released for download on October 22 in the US. In the UK pre-orders start September 22, while students in other countries will be able to take up the discount from October 22.

Bing: The "Bling" Machine for Microsoft?
Over the past years, Microsoft has been facing numerous failures in new projects supposed to strengthen its positions: Vista, Yahoo!, Live search, Zune, XboX IF the company is putting a lot of expectation in Windows 7 (it better does not fail), it seems that one of its recent new product could show the first sign of success. Indeed, Microsoft search engine, Bing, obtains encouraging performance.
Unlike Google, and its text-based presentation of search hits, Microsoft bet that better presenting the result of a search could also help users to make a choice and quickly identify what they are looking for. Recent statistics indicate that Bing is now used for 10% of the search requests performed on internet, and so captured market share from Google. The latest will most likely not remain inactive, and will fight to maintain its leadership.

Bei all den Icons in der Gitteransicht der Stapel im Dock kann man schon mal den Mauszeiger aus den Augen verlieren: Mac OS X 10.6 hebt im Gegensatz zum Vorgänger-OS keine Einträge mehr hervor, über denen sich der Mauszeiger gerade befindet. Know what we hate? The long groggy walk from our beds to the computer. It's only 10 feet but its potentially dangerous and honestly, exhausting. Panasonic's Robotic Bed is set to change that by automatically transforming from a static bed to a mobile wheelchair and back. Once converted, the robotic chair can navigate the home while avoiding obstacles with "no need for training," according to Panasonic. The canopy is fitted with a television and plugs into the home network so you can control home appliances and view security cameras. Obviously, its primary purpose is to give people with limited mobility more independence. However, bloggers can dream can't we? The Robotic Bed will be unveiled for the first time at the Tokyo Big Sight show on September 29th.

Nokia Booklet 3G hits the unboxing phase of its product cycle
Might as well add your own soundtrack, because chances are, you won't be able to understand what the narrator with a tattoo on his left hand is saying. Not that you really need, as you can probably get the gist of this Nokia Booklet 3G unboxing. We've got blue packaging, a power brick, a "Hello, Hei" greeting just under the portable itself, and a fairly sleek portable to boot. Of course, with a $800 price tag on the outside and an Atom processor on the inside, it's not the most attractive of combinations. See the whole kit and caboodle after the break.

Einige iPhone-Entwickler angeblich mit direktem Apple-Kontakt
LogMeIn hat mit LogMeIn Ignition (23,99 Euro) eine Anwendung im App Store, mit der sich Macs und PCs per iPhone fernsteuern lassen. Laut eigener Aussage hat die Firma aber noch etwas anderes: einen direkten Draht zu Apple. Dies hat jedenfalls LogMeIn-CEO Mike Simon gegenüber The Register bekannt gegeben.

Palm meldet achten Quartalsverlust in Folge
Der Pre hat Palm in seinem ersten Fiskalquartal 2010 (bis 28. August) einen Zuwachs bei den Handy-Verkaufszahlen von 134 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorquartal beschert. Trotzdem hat das Unternehmen zum achten Mal in Folge einen Quartalsverlust verbucht. Der Fehlbetrag beläuft sich auf 164,5 Millionen Dollar oder 1,17 Dollar je Aktie.

Panasonic verbessert Autofokus seiner Micro-4/3-Kameras
Panasonic hat ein Firmwareupdate für die Micro-Four-Thirds-Kameras Lumix DMC-GH1 und DMC-G1 vorgestellt. Damit soll der Autofokus bei ungünstigen Lichtverhältnissen verbessert werden. Palm: Weiter Verluste, aber Hoffnungsschimmer
Palm hat die Zahlen zum ersten Geschäftsquartal 2010 bekannt gegeben. Der Pre-Hersteller und Apple-Konkurrent konnte in dem am 28. August endenden Quartal 823000 Smartphones ausliefern, diese Zahl enthält neben dem Pre auch Geräte auf Basis von Windows Mobile und dem klassischen PalmOS. Gegenüber dem Vorquartal stieg die Auslieferungsmenge um 134 Prozent, im Jahresvergleich fiel sie um 30 Prozent. Tatsächlich abgesetzt wurden laut Palm 810000 Geräte.

Microsoft-Führungskraft wird Managerin des Jahres
Angelika Gifford, Mitglied der Geschäftsleitung und Leiterin des Geschäftsbereichs Public Sector bei Microsoft Deutschland, wird heute in Berlin mit dem "Mestemacher Preis Managerin des Jahres" geehrt. Dieser wird von einer Jury unter Vorsitz seiner Initiatorin Ulrike Detmers vergeben. Sie ist Professorin für Betriebswirtschaftslehre und zudem Mitglied der Geschäftsführung der in der Lebensmittelbranche tätigen Gütersloher Mestemacher-Gruppe. Ziel des Preises ist es, die wirtschaftliche Kompetenz von Frauen in der Wirtschaft herauszustellen, eine Kultur zu fördern, die Frauen und Männer gemeinsam gestalten sowie weiblichen Nachwuchsmanagerinnen weibliche Vorbilder zu präsentieren.

SUISA will nun auch Gebühren auf Memory-Sticks
Vor zwei Jahren wurden die «Urheberrechtsgebühren auf digitale Speichermedien» in der Schweiz trotz grosser Diskussion eingeführt. Diese Gebühren beliefen sich bei den damaligen iPods auf zwischen CHF 16.– und CHF 80.–. Nach den heftigen Kritiken gegenüber den Gebühren, senkte im April des letzten Jahres die SUISA die Gebühren teilweise. Diesen Juni nun zeigte eine Klage von verschiedenen Konsumentenorganisationen Wirkung gezeigt und die Gebühren wurden weiter (um 70 bis 95 Prozent)…

Apples Aktie weiter im Aufwind
Apples Wertpapier AAPL wird am NASDAQ in New York erstmals seit Mai 2008 wieder mit einem Kurs von über 180 US-Dollar gehandelt. Vom Dienstag auf Mittwoch sprang der Wert sprunghaft von gut 175 auf 178 US-Dollar und schloss schlussendlich bei 181 US-Dollar. Dieser Trend hielt auch am gestrigen Handelstag an und der Kurs erreichte zwischenzeitlich ein neues Jahres-Hoch mit 186.79 US-Dollar. If the discount is "minimal" (-20 €) compared to the retail price, the device comes with a 2 years warranty unlike Apple that offers only 1 year. So, it is worth 69 €, equivalent of an iPhone Apple Care. Of course, you will have to sign up a subscription plan for 2 years too.

We just got a quick look at Pentax's value priced, 720p-shootin' DSLR, the K-x. Unfortunately, the models we saw were pretty early prototypes, so we didn't get to really see how the camera performs. LG introduces XPION X30 Ion-based nettop
Apparently not content to let ASUS have all the fun, LG's just announced the XPION X30, its first Ion-based nettop. This little fella features an Atom N230 CPU, 2GB of RAM, 250GB HDD, and ships with Windows Vista (for the time being, at least). Aside from sporting six (count 'em!) USB ports, it weighs in at a mere 2.4 lbs, draws just 40 watts of power, and can be VESA mounted to the back of your LCD. Griffin Technology has announced MyPhones, a new headphone with an integrated volume limiter to protect against hearing loss for children. The headphones are designed with soft-rubber ear cushions that sit just over the ear, with an adjustable band for comfort. Cornell gurus look to carbon nanotubes for efficient solar cells

ZuneHD forces you to watch commercials before apps load?
It appears that instead of selling games, Microsoft's ZuneHD strategy is to place advertising in the apps before they load - like pre-mercials. These are full videos that take up space on your Zune Flash storage, not just your friendly Malware banner ads.
We can see this trend as being pretty annoying. Perhaps there will be a pay-opt-out? This one took up 30 seconds before playing a chess game. Thoughts anyone?

AT&T CEO: 7.2Mbs wireless in 6 major markets by year end
Randall L. Stephenson spoke at today's Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference. He noted among other things that AT&T would open up 7.2Mbs in six major markets by the end of 2009. The iPhone 3GS will be able to take advantage of this speed while older iPhones will be stuck with 3.6Mbs. As for cities that are going to get updated? We know Chicago is wired up and ready to go but who else gets to go 7.2? Verizon CEO doesn't care about landlines anymore, feels 'liberated' by new outlook
Verizon Communications CEO Ivan Seidenberg isn't too upbeat on the future of landlines, telling the audience at a Goldman Sachs investor conference today that the company is just not interested in telephones connected with wires. The chief exec of one of the nation's biggest telecommunications firms continued with his gospel, saying his "thinking has matured" and that trying to predict when the dwindling landline business will plateau is akin to "the dog chasing the bus." He says the new way of thinking is "liberating," but of course, endeavors like the Hub technically don't count as landlines to the company since it'sVoIP, and the coupled with its continued success as the largest cellular provider in terms of subscriber base, yeah, we're sure it's not too tough a pill to swallow. Sorting in Address Book
The OS X Address Book usually sorts contacts by either first name or last name; however, after updating your system either to Snow Leopard or even in an incremental update for Leopard, contacts may appear jumbled and will not sort properly. Usually faulty preferences are the reason for this to happen, but if you do not use Address Book frequently you may also mistake some interface behavior for faulty sorting.

OCZ Unveiled a New PCI Express SSD
OCZ unveiled its Z Drive.

It is a SSD featuring SLC or MLC memory chips, to be plugged on a PCI Express slot.
SLC-based model: available in 256 GB or 512 GB, offers 800 MB/s and 750 MB/s respectively in reading and writing mode, and supports 16,000 input/output per seconds.
MLC-based model: available with storage space ranging from 256 GB to 1 TB, offers 770 to 870 MB/s and 640 to 780 MB/s respectively in reading and writing mode (depending on models). The MLC chips will allow only 10,000 input/output per second.
Price are proportional to performance levels, the 256 GB MLC SSD will cost around 1,300 €, while the 1 TB model will be around 4,000 €. Snow Leopard's Grand Central Dispatch and OpenCL boost video encoding app by 50 percent
It'll take some time before we see the true impact of OpenCL and the newly-open-sourced Grand Central Dispatch on OS X, but we're definitely intrigued by this early report from Christophe Ducommun, developer of MovieGate, who says that shifting his app to use the new tech has increased performance by around 50 percent on the same hardware. Testing on a 2007 2.66GHz quad-core Mac Pro with a GeForce 800GT, MovieGate MPEG-2 encode speeds went from 104fps under Leopard to 150fps under Snow Leopard, and decoding CPU usage dropped from 165 percent to 70 percent. Memory capable of multitherading
RAMBUS has associated itself with Kingston, the largest manufacturer of random access memory of the world in order to present to a new memory that is supposed to be 50% faster while consuming 20% less energy. To arrive at this result, they used a technology close to that already used by the manufacturers of processors such as Intel, to work on several channels. In the case of Xeon, it can reach simultaneously access several memory cards at the same time thus increasing the band-width available.
In the case of this memory, it is possible to access two lines of memory at the same time. Besides this innovation, the chips in them same remains the standard DDR3; this makes it possible to limit the costs of this innovation… as long as the manufacturers will follow. Indeed, it will be imperative to have special memory controllers and this make it necessary to convince at least AMD and more certainly Intel to make a standard of it.

Plextor release new 24x DVD burners
For some years, the market of DVD burners has been saturated, this has led the manufacturers to exceed the speed that one believed to be the limit,16x, to reach today 24x that is the standard for the current top-of-the-range products. In spite of this, the price of these products remains the very weak since there is so much competition and to stand out due to the performance is practically impossible.
