New 3rd-Gen iPod touch rocking 802.11N-capable Wi-Fi chip, empty space for video camera
The fine folks of iFixit, as per usual, have torn apart Apple's latest iPod Touch revealing some interesting things. Firstly, the latest Broadcom BCM4329 makes the device capable of N speed Wifi unlike any othere iPod or iPhone.
Secondly, the ARM chip is different Samsung ARM chip than the iPhone 3GS or any Apple device before it.
The most revealing part is a little empty space for empty camera. If your not too skittish of the innards of the of whats inside check more pics here and here.

3rd gen iPod touch gets torn down, 802.11n and possible camera slot found
There's no denying that Apple let the entire world down by not shoving a camera of some sort into its iPod touch, but if a delicate teardown completed by the screwdriver-wielding fiends over at iFixit is any indication, a seasoned modder could certainly add one. Seven new themes arrive for Apple's Keynote
Keynote users have seven new themes to work with, from three different companies. iPresentee has released Keynote Motion Themes 7.0, with five new themes. These include Backsight, Techno, Brown Target, Green Breeze and Dancing Bubbles; each ships with 15 master slide layouts and moving background graphics. They require iWork '08 or '09, and cost $25 together or $10 separately.

IEEE ratifies 802.11n Wi-Fi standard after 7 years
The IEEE standards group today officially ratified 802.11n, the most recent standard for Wi-Fi. The move officially takes the wireless spec out of the draft status it has been in since 2006 and lets companies develop 11n hardware knowing that it will work properly with any device that supports the technology. Officials plan to publish the final standard in mid-October.

Vigor intros gaming PC with Ion, dedicated graphics
PC maker Vigor has recently released its Stealth NE gaming PC, which is unique in that it combines NVIDIA's Ion platform together with a choice of dedicated NVIDIA GeForce graphics cards. It also has an Asetek liquid cooling system built-in that quietly dissipates heat through a 120mm radiator. CPU choices themselves range from a 2.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo to a 3GHz Core 2 Quad.

Blackmagic updates hardware, extends Apple support
Blackmagic has announced several product updates, to both its video hardware and the supporting software. Within the first group is the DeckLink Studio 2, an upgraded capture card which now has 10-bit HDMI capture and playback. The company is also introducing the HDLink Pro DP, a DisplayPort version of an existing HDTV monitoring converter. The new DeckLink is selling for $695, while the alternate HDLink Pro model is $495.

Packard Bell's Viseo 200T display gets multi-touchy-feely next month
We don't see too many multitouch displays for desktop systems in these parts, but if Packard Bell has its way that's likely to change tout de suite. Not only has the company just announced its oneTwo line of all-in-one PCs with with touchscreen displays at CEDIA, but now its back with the Viseo 200T Touch Edition -- a 20-inch multitouch monitor featuring built-in stereo speakers, a 16:9 aspect ratio, 50,000:1 contrast ratio, 5ms response time, and VGA and DVI input. iPod touch: Update auf 3.x günstiger

Rogers to get Motorola Android phone in 2010
Canadian wireless provider Rogers will add at least one Android-powered Motorola handset to its lineup in 2010, according to a recent report. While the specific device hasn't been named, the most likely candidate is the recently unveiled Motorola Cliq handset, which is the first Android device from the manufacturer. Motorola has promised that it will release other Android handsets soon.

News: iPod touch 3G teardown reveals 802.11n chip
A newly-published teardown of the third-generation iPod touch by iFixit has revealed that the player contains an 802.11n-capable Wi-Fi chip, despite being listed as an 802.11b/g only device. According to the article, the iPod touch 3G sports a Broadcom BCM4329FKUBG wireless chip, which the manufacturer states is n-compatible. Optoma launches updated PK-102 pico projector
Optoma has began shipping its PK-102 pico projector, its successor to the existing PK-101. Like the PK-101, the PK-102 uses DLP technology and has the same 480x320 resolution and ability to project images up to 60 inches in size. Unlike the PK-101, however, it now has 4GB of built-in storage space and the capability to play back MP3 files from its built-in speaker. At the same time, the PK-102 doubles the contrast ratios of the PK-101 to 2,000:1.

New Blu-ray laser from Sharp burns triple, quad layer discs but can't cut red tape (yet)
Sharp stepped up at the 70th Autumn Meeting of the Japan Society of Applied Physics to promote its new 500mW Blu-ray laser that is reportedly production ready and waiting to churn out triple and quad layer (100GB) discs at 8x speed. The only thing holding it back from release now is the lack of an official spec from the BDA. 3G iPod touch has 802.11n Wi-Fi chip
Apple's new iPod touch has a partly neutered 802.11n Wi-Fi chip inside, according to a find by repair house iFixit. The media player is officially listed only as supporting 802.11g, but the Broadcom BCM4329 (PDF) chipset inside can technically use the much faster, 300Mbps maximum wireless standard. It also includes an FM transceiver and could theoretically support both radio stations as well as beaming audio to a car.

Vectorworks 2010 to incorporate Unified View
Nemetschek has formally announced Vectorworks 2010, an update to its Mac CAD software launching later this month. A primary addition is the Unified View, which lets users work in 3D while retaining normal class and layer structure setups. The view also introduces VW09's snapping technology into the 3D realm, including cursor queues and automatic guide and extension lines.

AT&T halts sales of just-released Nokia Mural
AT&T has stopped sales of the entry-level Mural flip phone from Nokia, which launched at the carrier earlier this month, because the device runs only on AT&T's 2G network instead of the 3G network, as promised. This was revealed by a Thursday BGR report, complete with an AT&T memo screen capture, and is blamed on a mistake at Nokia's factories.

Medion's S47000 sports camera shoots HD video, ain't too pretty
Finally a product that integrates an MP3 player with a Flip-style digital video camera! Of course, we're talking about Medion's S47000 Digital HD Sports Camera, which counts among its many charms: h.264 video recording, 2x digital zoom, a whopping 1MP still camera, HDMI out, and 90MB storage (though there is an SD card slot, for what it's worth). Tempted? Didn't think so. As for us, we're not shelling out £100 ($165) on anything without a pedometer.

Microsoft has $358m Alcatel patent award overturned
Microsoft today claimed a partial victory in its ongoing patent disputes with Alcatel-Lucent. Judges for the US Federal Court of Appeals overturned a $358 million award given to Alcatel for Microsoft's alleged infringing of a patent through a calendar grid feature in Windows Mobile, Money and Outlook. The officials maintained that Microsoft had still violated the patent but that the monetary damages didn't relate to the actual damage to Alcatel's business and that Alcatel hadn't provided the necessary proof.

First iPhone game with 3GS-specific graphics released?
Back in June it was revealed that the iPhone 3GS' newfound support of OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics put one of the first meaningful, material boundaries in software capability between iPhone generations (magnetic compass and video would be two other biggies), meaning that 3D-accelerated games targeted specifically for the 3GS platform could look a good deal fancier than their 2G / 3G counterparts -- and furthermore, they could be built to only work on the 3GS if the developer chose not to build in support for both. Apple releases Grand Central Dispatch as open-source code
Apple has taken the decision to make Grand Central Dispatch, a key feature of Mac OS X Snow Leopard, available as an open-source project. Developers can now find the component's services API on the web. Grand Central is intended to simplify multi-core support in Mac OS X, which without an intermediate layer can be difficult to program for.

LG details, dates wireless HDTVs for US
At the currently ongoing CEDIA show, LG is showing off its first wireless LCD HDTVs, including the 55-inch 55LHX and the LH85 series. The wireless connectivity lets users stream 1080p video signals to the TV sets up to 30 feet away without lag; a separate media box takes the majority of wired input. Power for the sets, however, still needs to come from a cable connection.

News: Apple lowers pricing on iPod touch 3.x update
Amidst a slew of announcements Wednesday—new iPods, iTunes 9, and so on—Apple quietly lowered the price on its iPod touch 3.1 Software Update. Chinese iPhone to kickstart world smartphone market
The launch of the iPhone in China could be instrumental to the growth of smartphones in the entire world, according to an estimate by iSuppli. iPhone OS 3.1 enforcing Exchange device encryption, only supported by iPhone 3GS
Noticing a "Policy Requirement" error when trying to use your Microsoft Exchange account after upgrading to OS 3.1? Then there's a good chance you're not using an iPhone 3GS, as Apple has just confirmed via a support page that the upgrade can now enforce the Exchange ActiveSync mailbox policy requiring encryption on the device, which just so happens to only be supported by the 3GS (guess that "S" stands for more than just speed). Not surprisingly, the only solution for non-3GS users is to contact their Exchange Server administrator and hope that they're willing to change the policy to no longer require device encryption.Filed under: Cellphones

Nokia grabs the Windex, clears up 'erroneous' Maemo carrier customization claims
We aren't too sure where a number of outlets overheard that Nokia was planning to pass on customizing its Maemo-based devices, but one of two things has happened: either Nokia is lying to our faces and has secretly had a change of heart, or everyone was just misinformed from the get-go. Nokia backtracks, will allow customized Linux phones
Nokia this morning reversed its seeming stance on excluding carrier customization from Maemo-based smartphones like the N900. Despite an executive claiming Nokia would at least partly follow the Android and iPhone models of giving less control to carriers over software in the OS, the company now says the argument is "simply incorrect" and that there are "many customization points" for carriers to alter the platform.

Samsung has announced the P410M, an LED-based DLP projector. The unit is designed with size in mind, and as such measures no more than 5.8 inches long, and 2.5 inches high. Weight has been kept to under 2 pounds.

iLounge has posted a set of three videos comparing the speed of the third-generation iPod touch to that of the second-generation iPod touch and iPhone 3GS. As expected, the new iPod touch appears to be slightly faster than the iPhone 3GS, and noticeably faster than the second-generation iPod touch. Vision rebranding wasn't AMD's only big unveil yesterday, as the company had on display a number of different stations for its ATI Radeon Eyefinity technology. Facebook Desktop Notification app arrives for Macs
Software developers Lee Byron and Owen Yamauchi have released Facebook desktop notification software for the Mac. An independent release, it places a Facebook icon in the Mac OS Menu Bar, with drop-down notification feeds and Growl-style alerts. It is considered experimental software and has only been tested in Mac OS X 10.5.

We are now in the process of posting our complete set of third-generation iPod touch unboxing photos to Flickr. Amongst the small but notable changes in the new models is an engraving change, similar to that of the iPod classic 160GB, that sees the capacity badge shunk, and a small amount of text removed from the bottom of the unit.

Justice Department looks deeper into Microsoft, Yahoo deal
The Justice Department is asking Microsoft and Yahoo for more information regarding a proposed deal between the two companies related to online online search and advertising, according to the New York Times. Snow Leopard bug crippling Installer?
Mac OS X Snow Leopard is preventing some users from installing any further software, posts on Apple's support forums indicate. After upgrading to the OS, users may find that Installer is incapable of completing any kind of installation, whether in terms of first- or third-party programs. T-Mobile to get 21Mbps 3G; Android at 10K apps
T-Mobile USA told those at the Mobilize conference yesterday that the carrier plans to ramp up its 3G speeds significantly in the next year. Although it began its 3G deployment much later than its GSM rival AT&T, T-Mobile's chief technical officer Cole Brodman expects to have its 7.2Mbps HSPA service online by the end of 2009. He now additionally expects the firm to introduce HSPA+ service at 21Mbps at some point in 2010.

Walkman S740 spotted in Japan at Sony dealer convention
A new Walkman model has been spotted at a Sony dealer convention in Japan, as per a Friday Engadget report. Called the S740, it appears to be a more expensive and highly featured model than the recently introduced Walkman S540 in North America. Details are scarce, but there doesn't seem to be a stereo speaker built into the front of the portable audio player, like in the S540 Walkmans.

Towards Cheap SSD from Intel
All users will agree that SSD brings performance level to a next level. If they do not offer the highest speed for random writing, they excel in reading and writing speed (MB/s) thanks to top-notch controller able to manage such flow of data.
The main problem today is the remaining high price of such units. Intel is aware of this fact and expects to offer a solution with its X25-V series. Such SSDs should be cheaper than the excellent X25-M despite using the same memory chips. The storage capacity will of course be lower (most probably around 40 GB), and today it is unclear what would be the performance of the controller.
This might also be considered as the first sign of a price war on SSD that could make entry level product/low storage capacity product affordable for most users.

36% US students opting for Mac this season, Parallels claims
2009’s shaping up to be a Mac new year for college-going students in the US, claims new research from the Parallels Desktop for Mac team.
In a press release citing a survey of 1,200 US students conducted by higher education-specialist research firm, Student Monitor, Parallels claims more than one third (36%) of full-time undergraduates at four-year US colleges and universities already plan to purchase a Mac.

Hey -- this one makes sense, so we shouldn't be too surprised, but it turns out that Time, Inc. is seriously looking into getting into the e-reader business, according to a leaked presentation from June of this year. The slides, which are entitled "New Platforms & Business Models for Publishers," also contained notes which had been updated as late as this past August, indicating that Time has plans to launch a product as soon as the end of this year. iPod nano: Radio industry cheers FM support
Apple delivered on one of the most-demanded features, radio, in the latest iteration of its iPod nano, and radio broadcasters seem thrilled by the news.
What’s interesting about the FM tuner inside the iPod nano is its capacity to rewind up to 15-minutes of a radio show, and a new tagging tool which lets users make a note of songs they’ve enjoyed for later purchase through iTunes, using technology from the Radio Advertising Bureau's "Buy From FM" platform.

Time developing e-book reader?
Time Inc. is planning on releasing an e-book reader in order to compete with Amazon's Kindle and other similar devices, according to a leaked internal document from the publisher. A recent NBC report says the magazine publisher will show the device before the end of the year. Time has previously gone on record to say it will not bring out its own e-reader, but has apparently since changed its mind.

Ah, the Meizu M8. Undoubtedly the funnest smartphone ever to talk about, though based on shipping success rates, it's probably not the phone to order if you actually value the whole "getting what you paid for" thing. INQ to dip into Android smartphones
INQ late Thursday confirmed through a speech at the Mobilize conference that the company's next wave of phones would use Android. Company chief Frank Meehan provided few details but said INQ would have "pretty cool things" in store for these devices. As current INQ phones use proprietary but conventionally limited operating systems, though, the move would have INQ enter into smartphones for the first time and give it access to full third-party apps as well as Google's full feature set.

Apple posts iMac, RAID firmware updates
Apple has posted two new firmware updates, addressing separate pieces of hardware. The iMac Graphics FW Update 1.0.2 fixes stability problems on iMacs running an ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro video card, or else the Radeon HD 2400 XT. Systems must also be operating on Mac OS X 10.5.2 or later.

Sharp develops laser for 100GB Blu-ray discs
Sharp on Friday revealed a blue-violet laser that it says could lead to triple-layer or even quad-layer Blu-ray discs. The light is as strong as 500mW and achieves the feat by putting an aluminum oxynitride layer between the laser's crystal and the usual dielectric film meant to protect the laser, eking out more output than would normally be possible with just the dielectric element alone. It would not only allow a drive to read twice as deep as current dual-layer Blu-ray drives but would let it write at 8X speed on all four layers.

Video: Mysterious Eigenharp offers blinkenlight sitar looks, chilled-out Moby grooves
There was a time when instruments were limited by their shapes, strings, valves. Today they're only limited by human creativity, and we'd have to say the folks at Eigen Labs certainly aren't lacking in that department -- they seem to have a bountiful supply of buttons and LEDs, too. Eigen has given birth to the eigenharp, an instrument that is still largely mysterious, but as you can see in the first video below it seems to allow musicians to loop samples, finger drum, and even play like an oboe. The second video shows off the thing's sequencer, a combination of features that could make this the perfect electronica accompaniment for your next sit-in. Microsoft chief Steve Ballmer later on Thursday lightly teased an iPhone owner at a company meeting. 58 percent of salespeople recommend Samsung HDTVs, 100 percent like big commission checks
We're sure that none of our stunningly attractive, gadget-expert readers would ever think about walking into an electronics retailer and asking the opinion of the teenagers in blue shirts and name tags. But, we also know that there are plenty of other folks out there who do, and when they do they're told to buy Samsung HDTVs a whopping 58 percent of the time. Sharp announces HT-SB500 soundbar at CEDIA, some iPod docks too
Sharp mostly re-announced stuff we're already seen at CEDIA today, but it did have a new soundbar for us -- the $349 3.1-channel HT-SB500, which adds a center speaker to the usual stereo setup. Sharp says the bar can use Dolby Virtual Speaker to simulate 5.1 audio from DTS, Dolby Digital, and Pro Logic II sources, which is almost but not quite extremely interesting. iTunes 9 nicht mit Palm Pre kompatibel - wie reagiert Palm?
Wie zu erwarten war, schaut iTunes 9 noch genauer hin, ob der iPod am Mac auch wirklich ein iPod ist. Natürlich ist das gegen Palm gerichtet, die mit dem letzten webOS-Update den Pre noch etwas mehr zu einem iPod gemacht haben - zumindest, was die Identifizierung gegenüber dem Computer angeht. iTunes 9 bietet euch nun den Umbau der bislang gültigen Ordnerstruktur an. Wählt man in der Ablage > Mediathek > Mediathek organisieren aus und bestätigt die Aktualisierung der iTunes-Medienverwaltung, legt iTunes für jede Medien-Kategorie einen eigenen Ordner an und sortiert die Hörbücher, Videos und Podcasts entsprechend übersichtlich ein.

Der neue iPod nano ist ein wahres Multitalent: Neben den altbekannten iPod-Funktionen hat man damit nun auch die vermutlich dünnste Videokamera der Welt in der Tasche, sondern auch einen Schrittzähler als Trainingsbegleiter dabei und verfügt zudem über einen funktionsreichen Radioempfänger.
Dieses integrierte UKW-Radio wird in der Berichterstattung zum Nano der fünften Generation ein wenig vernachlässigt. Es bringt diese Verbesserungen, laut Apple, mit:

Kamera im iPod touch könnte noch kommen
Auch wenn Steve Jobs den iPod touch als Spielemaschine bezeichnet hat, die keine Kamera benötige, könnte sie kommen, wenn auch später. Jobs hatte neben der neuen Ausrichtung des touch auch Kostengründe angegeben, es sei das Ziel gewesen, den touch unter 200 Dollar zu drücken. Allerdings ist es das alte Modell ohne die neue Hardware und die einfachen Kameramodule stellen nur einen geringen Kostenfaktor dar.

Herzfrequenzmessung mit dem iPod nano
Der neue iPod nano der 5. Generation verfügt bereits über einen integrierten Schrittzähler und lässt sich damit auch ohne separates Nike+ Sport Kit als "Trainingspartner" verwenden. Das Nike+ Kit ist jedoch weiter erhältlich und dürfte auch genauere Ergebnisse bei der Streckenmessung liefern.
Neu steht uns nun ein Herzfrequenz-Messgerät von Nike ins Haus. Auf der amerikanischen Apple-Seite wurde bereits ein neues Nike+-Handbuch veröffentlicht (PDF-Link), darin hat AppleInsider den Hinweis auf ein entsprechendes Add-on ausgemacht:

Canon invites press to "most important" product launch
A variety of web reports suggest Canon Sweden has begun sending out press invitations regarding a secret product launch. iTunes 9 Stops Palm Pré "Compatibility"
As one should have expected it, the new version of iTunes prevents the hack from Palm to make the Pré recognized as an iPhone. It might be time for Palm to invest time and resources for developing a true dedicated application able to make part of the job offered by iTunes. RIM just did it for its BlackBerry to make them deeply compatible for synchronization with Mac OS X utilities (Contacts, address book, iCal, etc.), giving Mac users the opportunity of having a Blackberry without sacrifying ease of use and syncing.

MacNN has captured a variety of hi-res unboxing pictures showing Apple's fifth-generation iPod nano. The updated device retains the same overall form-factor as its predecessor, but with a larger 240x376 pixel display on the front panel. Microsoft tonight reversed course on its ad strategy with the launch of its first Windows 7 ad. The 30-second TV spot (seen below) draws the same little girl, Kylie, that starred in a Windows Live Photo Gallery ad in February and avoids the pseudo-realistic but targeted anti-Apple attacks that have characterized the "Laptop Hunters" ads. Instead, the commercial is uniformly positive and has Kylie say she's discovered "happy" words about Windows 7 from reviews, which she then puts into a slideshow using Windows Movie Maker.

iPhone 3.1 update disables free tethering, some Exchange connectivity
As we warned before 3.1 came out, the latest iPhone update disables the tethering hack that so many of you enjoy using. That in itself is reason enough hold off on updating.
However, today TUAW publishes some more discouraging news. After the 3.1 update, non-iPhone 3GS users (touch, iPhone, iPhone 3G) won't be able to access Exchange servers for their Email, Contacts and Calendar if the Exchange connection has been set by their administrators with a forced device encryption connection. To be incorporated in the next generation of ATI Radeons, Eyefinity can rock up to six displays (DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI, etc.) with a single card, thanks to a new 40-nm graphics chip that contains 2 billion transistors, capable of 2.5 trillion calculations every second. AMD at a press conference today demonstrated one of the core features of its upcoming Radeon HD 5800 series graphics chipset. Nicknamed Eyefinity, the ATI-branded technology gives a single video card up to six DisplayPort outputs running at their full resolution. Well, how about that -- Palm Developer Community Manager Chuq Von Rospach has taken the time to respond to earlier reports of NaNplayer's rejection from the App Catalog, and he's surprisingly cool about it. As we'd heard, the underlying issue is that NaNplayer uses private APIs that will change in a future version of webOS, so Palm doesn't want apps built on them. That's understandable, but here's where Palm's doing it right: Chuq says that Palm is happy for NaNplayer "to continue life as a homebrew application until we get to the point where we can release public, supportable APIs for the functionality that it requires."
