Just when you thought it was safe above 60-inches, Samsung's showing off a new LCD at CEDIA with the best old-school CCFL tech has to offer. It may not have the sexy side profile of its edge lit-LED brethren or the cachet of certain plasmas but with the sheer size of the LN65B650, even shrouded by foliage in Samsung's booth setup, we're more than ready to catch a game on this baby. iPhone: problems with firmware 3.1

Two problems concerning iPhone firmware 3.1 have caught our attention. T-Mobile and Motorola weren't too forthcoming with a US launch date for the CLIQ, given only a ballpark estimate of "holiday." If these China-borne blurrycam photos are to believed, ASUS is following Acer into the home server market with the TS mini. Original Game Boy repurposed as external hard drive

Okay, so maybe this here mod isn't nearly as extreme as shoving an entire PC into the case of a classic Game Boy, but it's still pretty fantastic in its own right. iTunes mit 64 Bit - sinnvoll oder nicht?

John Gruber hatte sich im Vorfeld zum iPod/iTunes-Event Gedanken um ein 64-Bit-iTunes gemacht, sein Namensvetter bei Adobe, John Nack, hat seine eigene Meinung dazu: 64 Bit und Cocoa sind beide schön und gut, aber er wundert sich über die Erwartungen, die damit verbunden werden. Keine Strandbälle, außer vielleicht beim Abspielen von Nalin & Kane, können weder 64 Bit noch Cocoa garantieren. Dafür wäre das Entwicklerteam bei Apple länger mit dem Neuschreiben der Anwendung beschäftigt - neue Funktionen wären unwahrscheinlich, dafür könnten etliche entfallen, um das neue iTunes schnell veröffentlichen zu können.

Microsoft-Urteil: Schadenersatz zu hoch angesetzt

iPhone 3.1 update disables free tethering, some Exchange connectivity

As we warned before 3.1 came out, the latest iPhone update disables the tethering hack that so many of you enjoy using.  That in itself is reason enough hold off on updating.  However, today TUAW publishes some more discouraging news.  After the 3.1 update, non-iPhone 3GS users (touch, iPhone, iPhone 3G) won't be able to access Exchange servers for their Email, Contacts and Calendar if the Exchange connection has been set by their administrators with a forced device encryption connection.  Only iPhone 3GS devices now work in this mode.  Apple

Apple delivered on one of the most-demanded features, radio, in the latest iteration of its iPod nano, and radio broadcasters seem thrilled by the news. What’s interesting about the FM tuner inside the iPod nano is its capacity to rewind up to 15-minutes of a radio show, and a new tagging tool which lets users make a note of songs they’ve enjoyed for later purchase through iTunes, using technology from the Radio Advertising Bureau's "Buy From FM" platform. 2009’s shaping up to be a Mac new year for college-going students in the US, claims new research from the Parallels Desktop for Mac team. New 3rd-Gen iPod touch rocking 802.11N-capable Wi-Fi chip, empty space for video camera

The fine folks of iFixit, as per usual, have torn apart Apple's latest iPod Touch revealing some interesting things. Firstly, the latest Broadcom BCM4329 makes the device capable of N speed Wifi unlike any other iPod or iPhone. Secondly, the ARM chip is different Samsung ARM chip than the iPhone 3GS or any Apple device before it.   The most revealing part is a little empty space for a video camera like the one in the iPod Nano camera. We can say for sure that our own Windows 7 upgrade experience didn't take, oh say, a whole day, but according to Microsoft, your own just might. iFixit hat nun auch den neuen iPod touch unter die Schraubenzieher bekommen. Die Modelle mit 32 und 64 GB besitzen die schnellere Hardware des aktuellen iPhone, während der iPod touch mit 8 GB technisch unverändert zur alten Generation ist. Orange introduces 'HD Voice' calls -- 3G, Moldovian citizenship required

You may not have realized it, but all of the cellphone calls you've been making have totally not been HD. While we may still be stuck with our old standard def calls for a while yet over here, it looks like the good citizens of Moldova have now finally vaulted into the future courtesy of Orange, which recently made the very first "HD Voice" call in the country (on 09/09/09, of course). Overused acronyms aside, the calls do indeed appear to be of noticeably better quality (at least if the web demo is any indication), which is mostly due to their use of the new Adaptive Multi Rate - Wide Band (or AMR-WB) codec that takes advantage of the greater bandwidth afforded by 3G. Unfortunately, it looks like the HD Voice-ready handset options are a bit limit

Atmel touchscreen tech gives unlimited, large-screen input

Atmel is hoping to move forward the technology behind touchscreens its new maXTouch series of capacitive touchscreen controllers. The new developments are unique in supporting an unlimited number of separate and simultaneous touch inputs along with a particularly fast screen refresh rate of 250Hz. The maXTouch controllers will allow the creation of touchscreens that are larger than 10 inches with zoom, rotate, handwriting and shape recognition functionality. Atmel also claims the maXTouch devices will have the lowest power needs in their class.

Motorola's Dext dated for the UK

A version of the recently introduced Motorola Cliq smartphone, the maker's first Android device, got release dates for the European market thanks to a Friday report. In Europe, the device will be known as the Dext, with UK provider Orange getting the device in early October. While prices were not set, pre-orders will begin on September 22nd.
