iPod nano unboxed, camera gets tested against the mean streets of Manhattan
We know you come here for the hard, gritty, "$2 slice" end of the gadget news spectrum, and we've got that in spades in our video hands-on of the new iPod nano. We start out shooting the iPod with our regular Sanyo Xacti rig, and then dive in to the nano's shot -- real movie magic at work. Granted, the nano's camera isn't that magical. Apple's piled on a huge complement of effects to disguise this fact, and in truth, some of the Photo Booth-style filters and distortions really do make the video more interesting (cyborg and kaleidoscope were a couple of our favorites), but the basic video mode is much lower quality than the recent crop of cheap pocket video cameras, and a far cry fr

Apple releases Mac OS X 10.6.1 with compatibility fixes
Apple on Thursday released Mac OS X 10.6.1, its first maintenance update following the recent Snow Leopard launch. The company has addressed a variety of compatibility issues involving Sierra Wireless 3G modems, interrupted DVD playback, automatic account setup in Mail, and Motion 4 problems.

Matrox add-on gives Mac video editors HDMI, SDI
Matrox this evening launched a new portable breakout box aimed specifically at Mac users editing at a pro level with Final Cut Studio. The MXO2 LE takes SDI, component, RCA and 10-bit HDMI video input from cameras or other sources and puts them in formats immediately usable by Color, Final Cut Pro and other apps in the suite, such as Apple's in-house ProRes 4:2:2 HQ format. It can also work with non-Apple software like After Effects and uses an XLR power input, making it friendly to a MacBook Pro at a video shoot where XLR may be more common than AC outlets.

The 10.6.1 Update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac, including fixes for:
compatibility with some Sierra Wireless 3G modems
an issue that might cause DVD playback to stop unexpectedly
some printer compatibility drivers not appearing properly in the add printer browser
an issue that might make it difficult to remove an item from the Dock
instances where automatic account setup in Mail might not work

Mac OS X 10.6.1, Security Update für Leopard/Tiger erschienen
Nur Tage, nachdem ein neuer Build für zahlende ADC-Mitglieder veröffentlicht wurde, erscheint nun Mac OS X 10.6.1 für alle. Das frühe Update ist nicht ungewöhnlich für Apple, Snow-Leopard-Nutzer, die auf Probleme gestoßen sind, sollten auch nicht erwarten, dass 10.6.1 alle Probleme behebt. Bis zu 10.6.2 dürfte Apple sich etwas mehr Zeit lassen und dementsprechend umfangreicher wird es werden.

Motorola CLIQ: first hands-on impressions
The wait's killing us for a proper hands-on with this thing, but we just had a chance to very briefly touch -- yes, touch -- the CLIQ as we wandered the show (and ran into tnkgrl in the process). Here's what we can tell you:
Despite the MSM7201a core, the UI is definitely faster than any factory ROM we've used before on any Android device. A good test of this is to quickly swipe open the app drawer -- the action's smooth on the CLIQ, whereas most Magic ROMs would stutter.
The screen is glass capacitive, and it feels that way. There's no "give" like you've got on a G1 or Magic, for example.

Kommt Kamera-Touch als Nachzügler?
Die Überraschung gestern Abend war groß: Der iPod nano bekommt neben einem Radioempfänger und Schrittzähler auch noch eine Videokamera verpasst, beim Touch dagegen fehlt das entsprechende Loch auf dem Rückendeckel. Dabei hätten im Vorfeld wohl alle - auch wir - darauf gewettet, dass es wenn, dann eher anders herum kommt.
In einem Interview mit der New York Times nannte Apple-Boss Steve Jobs den angepeilten attraktiven Preis als Grund für den Wegfall zusätzlicher Funktionen. Die 199 Dollar (189 Euro) Einstiegspreis hätten sich sonst laut Jobs nicht halten lassen.

iPod nano: Nagelneu und schon zerlegt
Wie soll es auch anders sein: iFixit hat den gestern vorgestellten iPod nano der 5. Generation bereits zerlegt und präsentiert den inzwischen obligatorischen Fotoroman.
Die integrierte Kamera ist übrigens nicht einmal drei Millimeter dick (etwa die Hälfte der im iPhone 3G verbaute Kamera). Laut Apple liegt hier auch der Grund dafür, dass mit den neuen iPod nano keine Fotos gemacht werden können versteckt: Für eine halbwegs akzeptable Fotoauflösung bräuchte es ein deutlich dickeres Modul.

AMD announces 'VISION' guide to buying PCs
Well, Intel may have been on a bit of a processor rebranding kick as of late, but it looks like AMD is now trying to one-up 'em in fairly big way with its new "VISION" branding strategy, which promises to do nothing short of change the way people buy PCs -- or so AMD hopes. JVC intros 4K projector, 4.1-channel sound bar systems
At the currently ongoing CEDIA home theater show in Atlanta, JVC has introduced its DLA-RS4000 Reference Series 4K home cinema projector along with a pair of 4.1-channel sound bar home theater systems. The projector can reproduce a 10-megapixel image and offers 4K resolution, or 4,096x2,400 pixels, which is more than four times that of 1080p. The projector is both ISF and THX certified, and can produce 3,500 lumens of brightness from its Xenon lamp, with 8 settings for lamp power.

iPod nano to gain Nike-branded heart rate monitor?
The latest iPod nano may soon have an optional Nike heart rate monitor, a guide from Apple's website is said to indicate. The manual (PDF) includes a section called "Linking a Nike+iPod Compatible Remote or Heart Rate Monitor," specifically stating that the technology is only compatible with a fifth-gen Nano. Although the new Nano is already in stores, there is no sign of the quoted monitor.

Alltel gets Samsung's new Freeform handset
Samsung's Freeform handset has been added to the Alltel Wireless lineup. The entry level device has a 2.2-inch color display and a QWERTY keyboard, as well as customizable navigation keys that can take users to their favorite applications. Windows 7 to get a better version of Netflix than Vista
No the Windows 7 version of the Netflix Watch Instantly still sin't going to work on Extenders for Media Center, but it will include a more seamless experience than the Vista version does, like the movie info image above. Microsoft really wasn't ready to share any more details with us, but we suspect the search is improved. The fact that they were so tight lipped leads us to believe that Microsoft is still holding back on some Windows 7 details -- at least in regards to internet content and Windows 7. At this point it appears we might have to wait until the official release of Windows 7 to truly figure out if all that work to bring internet content to Windows 7 pays off.

"IOFireWireWDHID.kext" not loading after 10.6 or iTunes 9 update
If you have used a Western Digital Firewire hard drive with your Mac, and have upgraded to Snow Leopard, you may run across an error where the "IOFireWireWDHID.kext" extension will not load. This may happen immediately after updating, or may happen when you update other software such as iTunes, in the case of one user.

NAVIGON updates MobileNavigator GPS app for iPhone
NAVIGON has launched a second, free update for the North American version of MobileNavigator for the iPhone. The app turns an iPhone into a GPS unit, with maps for the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands. It works in both portrait and landscape modes, and has features such as intelligent address entry, signpost display and lane assist. It also displays warnings when exceeding speed limits.

Pioneer's Project ET hub has iPhone remote
Pioneer at the CEDIA expo today provided demonstrations of its first networked media hub. The concept device shown on the floor, so far known only as the Entertainment Tap, still has a Blu-ray player but is intended for online media playback first and foremost: it can recognize media from DLNA-ready devices over Ethernet or Wi-Fi and has access to Netflix movies, Picasa photos and YouTube videos. Video: Motorola CLIQ gets demoed in detail
CLIQs are pretty hard to come by in the wake of Motorola's big announcement today, but we flagged down an all-too-nice rep who showed off the phone's major talking points. Though it's got the same old Qualcomm MSM7201a beating in its chest that we've found in countless other Android and WinMo phones -- not anything thoroughly modern like Snapdragon -- we're feeling cautiously optimistic that MOTOBLUR is snappier in day-to-day use than HTC's competing Sense. The built-in widgets Motorola is supplying look top-notch with a ton of spit and polish (seemingly without sacrificing speed or usability), so all told, we think Moto's been really cranking this year baking this platform to a golden crisp. ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5000 details leak
A Chinese leak today has slipped many core details of AMD's next ATI notebook graphics platform. The Mobility Radeon HD 5000 series is expected to be a direct translation of the desktop models and should have similar lines. At the top, the 5870, 5850 and 5830 will all have a very large 1,600 shader units (effects processors) and should support CrossFire on gaming-oriented desktop replacements. The top two will support fast GDDR5 memory while the 5830 will need GDDR3.

Apple is continuing its work on an iPod touch with a camera, in spite of having just released a third-generation player without one, several sources claim. Motorola CLIQ finds a home on T-Mobile's website
Lookie here! Those who thought Motorola was messing around with the revitalization of itself best take notice, as the company's CLIQ -- which was literally just announced moments ago -- has already surfaced on T-Mobile USA's website. At least initially, T-Mob will be the exclusive carrier for the phone in America, and it'll be shipping in both black and white. OWC intros Mercury On-The-Go Pro portable SSDs
OWC on Thursday introduced its first SSDs as part of its Mercury On-The-Go Pro portable lineup, touting them as the lowest cost portable FireWire 800/400 or USB 2.0 powered devices of their kind. Starting off with the 64GB version, a 128GB unit and the largest 256GB SSD, each can transfer data at up to 100MBps. Each 2.5-inch drive offers a 64MB data cache. As with most SSDs, the lack of moving parts makes them more shock resistant, power efficient and quieter than rotating hard drives, as well as being more tolerant to temperature extremes.

As expected, Motorola just introduced its Android strategy at the Mobilize conference, and it's based around a skin called Blur -- or MOTOBLUR if you're feeling cute. It's built around social networking, and it features live widgets that integrate Twitter, Facebook, Gmail, MySpace, Yahoo, Last.fm and more. iFixit tears down fifth generation iPod nano
iFixit is in the process of doing a teardown of the new fifth generation iPod nano. Apple introduced the Nano at its iPod press event yesterday. The overall design appears to be identical to the fourth generation iPod nano, with the new camera added and a click-wheel that is not permanently affixed to the case as it was in the previous generation. The new video camera is video-only, as the size of the Nano limits the ability to added still-photo capable circuitry. The video camera captures H.264 640x480 video at 30 frames-per-second and captures AAC audio.

Sharp intros Blu-ray player, two portable iPod docks
At the CEDIA show on Thursday, Sharp announced it will soon launch a new Blu-ray player, the BD-HP52U. The reader will have the ability to connect to the web, and Sharp will partner with an unnamed service provider to bring premium streaming video content. This partner is expected to be named later in September. JVC outs ultra-thin 3D, LED monitors
JVC on Thursday introduced a 46-inch 3D LCD HDTV, the GD-463D10, along with a 32-inch LED-backlit HDTV, the LT-32WX50. Both are ultra-thin, with the former just 1.5 inches (39mm) thick, while the latter is 0.25 inches (6.4mm) thick. The GD-463D10 is technically a monitor as it lacks a tuner, but can be used to reproduce 3D images thanks to the Xpol polarizing filter on the screen itself paired with the included battery-free eyeglasses.

Motorola announcing Android plans today, but what's coming?
Motorola's out in San Francisco today at GigaOM's Mobilize 09 event to finally dish the real story on its Android-flavored future -- and considering that T-Mobile's CTO Cole Brodman is co-keynoting with Motorola CEO Sanjay Jha, it's reasonable to think that T-Mobile will once again be leading the way for carrier adoption of the platform in the US (Verizon's rumored Sholes, on the other hand, might be a no-show). iPhone owners are much more likely to download apps and get involved with social networking than their BlackBerry-owning counterparts, Compete revealed today in a new study. About 72 percent of Apple smartphone users are likely to have downloaded at least 10 third-party apps, but 73 percent of BlackBerry users have picked up five apps or less. iTunes 9: Löscht alle “alten” ipsw Dateien
Wer iTunes 9 installiert und auf alte Firmware-Versionen angewiesen ist, z.B. um einen Jailbreak durchzuführen etc. und diese im Standard-Verzeichnis unter ~/Library/iTunes/iPhone Software Updates liegen hat, wird nach der Aktualisierung auf iTunes 9 feststellen, dass Apple mit der Installation von iTunes 9 alle alten Firmware bis auf 3.1 löschen lässt.

Hey, remember that ultra skinny, LED-backlit HDTV that JVC showed off at CEDIA UK earlier this year? The seven millimeter-thin LT-32WX50? Yeah, that very panel is making a second debut here in Atlanta, but it has somehow managed to slim down to 6.4 millimeters (at its thinnest point) and get a November ship date in the US. Weighing just 12.5 pounds, the 32-inch set packs a 4,000:1 contrast ratio, edged-light LED backlight system, a super wide color gamut (100 percent of sRGB and 90 percent of Adobe RGB), a 1080p native resolution, two HDMI sockets, VGA input and an RS-232c control port. The pain? Just under $3,000, or in other words, a small fortune.

JVC brings Blu-ray burning set-tops to the U.S., leaves all the fun overseas
U.S. buyers wanting to slide a Blu-ray playing & recording deck into their setup finally have an option coming from JVC, but the domestic limitations are almost as high as the pricetags. Unlike their Japanese and European cousins, there isn't any support for DVRing television content to the hard drive or discs here, with support limited strictly to unprotected Blu-ray content, or imported video from cameras or other sources via the Firewire, SDHC and USB ports. Still, professionals and prosumers interested in easily duping their own Blu-ray discs, video editing or quickly creating one-offs the SR-HD1500 (250GB, $1,995) and the SR-HD1250 (500GB, RS-232, Final Cut Pro .mov file support $2,550) may find a home for these when they ship in October.

Home Sharing bug in iTunes 9?
I was excited to try out the new Home Sharing feature in iTunes 9. The feature isn't as new as some reports suggest--it's been possible to share iTunes libraries among computers in a home network for years now, but the experience was pretty limited. You couldn't play DRM-protected songs in a shared library, couldn't create playlists from a shared library, and most important, couldn't physically transfer songs from a library on one computer to a library on another. Home Sharing promises to change all this, so I gleefully updated iTunes on my Windows XP PC and my MacBook (which my wife has adopted), and enabled Home Sharing on both.

We have good and bad news after visiting the Dish Network booth first thing in the morning. We're happy to say that Dish was proudly displaying a Dish Tuner for Media Center 7 at its booth. The bad news however is that it was just a "proof of concept." Which means no matter how hard we tried, no one would tell us anything about price or availability. First Palm App Catalog rejection: NaNplayer
Palm's App Catalog isn't exactly bursting with titles yet, but that isn't stopping the company from rejecting apps -- and the dubious honor of First App Rejected goes to NaNplayer, a music player app. Apparently NaNPlayer made use of an undocumented webOS API call, so it makes sense that Palm wouldn't approve it, but there's a somewhat less-sensible flipside: it was using the same API the built-in music player uses to index files so it could make playlists. iPod update event gives confidence, says analyst
Apple's 2009 iPod update event was generally a positive, says Needham & Co. analyst Charlie Wolf. It did for instance mark Steve Jobs' first public appearance after his six-month medical leave, during which he had a liver transplant. Jobs also announced several important statistics, such as the existence of over 75,000 iPhone apps, and over 1.8 billion app downloads. Nokia's unusual 7705 Twist lands at Verizon
Nokia today launched one of its most unusual phone designs to date through Verizon. The often-rumored 7705 Twist has a short, squat shape that has a swivel-out QWERTY keyboard instead of the usual slider. HTC Touch Pro2 reaches Verizon
Verizon this morning became the third US carrier to get a version of the HTC Touch Pro2. Unlike some of the provider's past conversions of HTC's Windows Mobile smartphones, the handset is virtually the same in design and performance as the reference CDMA version, with 288MB of RAM and a 528MHz processor. Sprint Any Mobile unlimited calling goes live
Sprint acted on its rumored plans and launched Any Mobile, Anytime, a major addition that promises to change its calling plans. Anyone with an Everything Data individual or family plan ($70 or more) now gets unlimited voice time when calling a cellphone on any other US network, regardless of distance. Apple’s keynote yesterday was heavily-hyped with huge expectation surrounding the event, the high points of which turned out to be the return of Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, introduction of iTunes 9 and the iPod nano - and the total collapse of Twitter during the show.

Real Rhapsody approved, launches for iPhone
RealNetworks today confirmed the approval of its first iPhone app with the launch of Rhapsody on the App Store. The free software is the first on-demand competing music app to reach the iPhone and iPod touch in the US and gives subscribers to the $15 monthly service streaming access to the entire Rhapsody catalog over 3G or Wi-Fi. Listeners can't currently download tracks permanently but can search and add them to their libraries, create playlists and have access to Rhapsody Radio.

Palm Pre lässt sich (noch?) nicht mit iTunes 9 synchronisieren
Erwartet haben es wohl die meisten und selbst Palm wollte auf einmal doch noch mit der Veröffentlichung von WebOS 1.2 für seinen Palm Pre warten. AMD intros next-gen ULV processors with 1080p
AMD this morning kicked off the launch of an updated notebook offering and headlined it with Congo, the nickname for its next-generation Ultrathin Platform. The new architecture includes AMD's faster 1.6GHz Turion Neo X2, found in the HP dv2z, but focuses on graphics performance and battery life. It uses a Radeon HD 3200 much like AMD's fuller-size notebooks and as a result can decode 1080p video smoothly in hardware; at the same time, AMD estimates about an hour more of battery life than its earlier platform.

Apple's Steve Jobs kills Twitter (for 15-minutes)
Apple’s keynote yesterday was heavily-hyped with huge expectation surrounding the event, the high points of which turned out to be the return of Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, introduction of iTunes 9 and the iPod nano - and the total collapse of Twitter during the show.

ZVOX late Tueday added new home theater speaker systems to its lineup, including the high-performance 430 and 440 sound bars along with the IncrediBase 575. All are one-bar speakers without any separate satellites or a remote subwoofer, with all drivers built into one cabinet. Smartphone success now determined by hardware integration?
Profits in the smartphone market are increasingly linked to a single business model, says Needham & Co. analyst Charlie Wolf. At present there are two distinct approaches: integrated hardware and software, used by companies like Apple and Research in Motion, and a software licensing focus, favored by Google and Microsoft. Nokia to echo Apple's anti-carrier software stance
Nokia will mirror Apple's approach to carrier software with all of its Maemo Linux-based smartphones, the company said on Wednesday. Rather than agree to include carrier-specific apps and modify the look of the OS to appease carriers, as it does with most of its Symbian phones, Nokia told Reuters it will insist that devices like the N900 come only with their default apps and interface. The choice is characterized as an attempt to focus on an ideal experience for the user and less an attempt to placate carriers.

Samsung adds 640GB hard drive to Spinpoint M7 range
Earlier this week, Samsung announced it will soon start shipping a new addition to its Spinpoint M7 hard drive lineup, with the 2.5-inch internal HDD. At 640GB, it's the largest offered, topping the current 500GB unit. Also compared to the 500GB unit, the new hard drive has a 28 percent increase in areal density, now at 516 gigabits (64.5 gigabytes) per square inch for each 320GB platter. The new hard drive is meant for high-performance notebooks that require greater shock resistance.

Wireless provider AT&T on Wednesday announced the upcoming launch of its A-List with Rollover plan for qualifying plans. Panasonic intros 2.1-channel Blu-ray home theater
Panasonic on Wednesday said it will soon release its first 2.1-channel Blu-ray Disc home theater system, the SC-BTX70. The upright system uses a proprietary Panasonic technology that can reproduce virtual 7.1-channel sound in Dolby's TrueHD and DTS-HD virtual 7.1 formats. The two speakers, made of bamboo, have a top-mounted design for better sound dispersion. The system is rated at 375W of power, with each speaker and the subwoofer getting 125W.

Sony Japan has recently introduced wireless headphones that operate on the 2.4GHz frequency and, more importantly, can reproduce 7.1-channel audio. PC-Ware entlässt 170 Mitarbeiter

Apple (iPhone OS), Android, Blackberry, Symbian und Windows Mobile - diese fünf Plattformen werden mindestens in den nächsten fünf Jahren den Markt für Smartphones bestimmen, so jedenfalls die Einschätzung der auf die Entwicklung mobiler Anwendungen spezialisierten Verband KI AG. Gründung der MMA Germany angekündigt
Die Fachgruppe Mobile im Bundesverband Digitale Wirtschaft (BVDW) und die Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) haben gestern in Berlin die Erweiterung ihrer bestehenden Partnerschaft angekündigt. Gemeinsam wollen beide Verbände künftig als "MMA Germany" Best Practices veröffentlichen, Leitfäden erstellen, Standards für Mobile Marketing international weiterentwickeln und etablieren sowie den Mobile-Markt vorantreiben. Ebenfalls stehen gemeinsame Marktforschungsprojekte und Veranstaltungen auf der Agenda sowie der gegenseitige Erfahrungsaustausch über Mobile Marketing in den verschiedenen Märkten.
Dabei sollen sich für sowohl für Mitglieder der Fachgruppe Mobile des BVDW wie auch für MMA-Mitglieder Vorteile durch automatische, kostenfreie Mitgliedschaft ergeben.

Optisch leichter, luftiger sieht es aus und natürlich sieht auch iTunes 9 wieder einmal so aus wie keine andere Mac-Anwendung. iTouch: Neue Geräte und Preise
Gestern hat Apple u.a. die neue iPod touch-Familie vorgestellt. Der iTouch-Spaß beginnt jetzt bereits ab 189 Euro inkl. MwSt. für ein Gerät mit 8 GB Speicher, WLAN- und (eingeschränkter) Bluetooth-Connectivity sowie eingebauten Beschleunigungssensoren und Lautsprecher - jedoch ohne Kamera. Das Angebot wird komplettiert durch neue Modelle, die jetzt jeweils doppelte Speicherkapazität zum bisherigen Preis bieten: iTouch m. 32GB für 279 Euro und iTouch 64GB für 369 Euro. Durch bessere Grafikunterstützung durch Einsatz von Open GL ES 2.0 sollen die "großen" Modelle um bis zu 50 Prozent schneller geworden sein.
Überdies wurde Version 9 von iTunes sowie iPhone OS 3.1 für iPhone sowie iPhone OS 3.1.1 für iPod touch vorgestellt. Das Upgrad ist für alle Anwender von OS 3.0 kostenlos. Benutzer älterer Versionen müssen knapp 4 Euro berappen. Im Kontext der gestrigen Vorstellungen verwies Apple auch auf die derzeit "über 75.000" Anwendungen im App Store, die bereits 1,8 Mrd. Video des iPod-Event verfügbar
Am gestrigen Mittwoch stellte Apple einen neuen iPod nano mit Videofunktion und iTunes 9 auf einem speziellen Medien-Event vor. Wie immer zu solchen Gelegenheiten gab es nur für ausgewählte Journalisten eine Live-Übertragung an einen einzigen europäischen Ort. Alle anderen Apple-Kunden aber mussten sich mit den inzwischen üblichen Live-Tickern begnügen, wie er auch bei maclife.de zu sehen war. Nun aber hat das Warten ein Ende, denn Apple veröffentlichte letzte Nacht die Aufzeichnung des Events sowohl als Videopodcast (iTunes-Link), als auch als QuickTime-Stream.

Zweite Generation des iPod shuffle eingestellt
Nachdem Apple die Produktpalette des iPod shuffle 3G aktualisiert und damit um weitere Farben und eine Special Edition ergänzt hat, wurde der Verkauf der vorherigen Generation mit 1 GB Kapazität nun gänzlich eingestellt. APSI 100 GPS packs removable PMP, can't be removed from South Korea
GPS devices have been packing full PMP functionality for quite some time now, but few have come up with the bright idea of using an actual, removable PMP for the heart of the unit -- although Apple and TomTom are now doing their best attempt at a one-two punch. Korean manufacturer APSI now made its best attempt at a fully out-of-the-box solution with its new APSI 100 unit, however, which combines the simplicity of a touchscreen PMP with the in-car convenience of some old fashioned buttons and knobs. Oryx Digital has released new Professional and Advanced Editions of its seating and planning software, PerfectTablePlan. The app offers tools for creating and arranging seating places for special occasions such as weddings or award ceremonies, and includes printable charts and reports. The two new editions bring more customizable features, and allow users to add tables onto a scaled floor plan simply by dragging and dropping. Exemplare abgesetzt, 2008 waren es 4,3 Millionen, wie der Hightech-Verband BITKOM basierend auf GfK-Zahlen jetzt mitteilte. Allein von 2006 bis 2008 waren in Deutschland mehr als zehn Millionen Navigationsgeräte verkauft worden. Einer aktuellen BITKOM-Studie zufolge verfügt bereits jeder vierte Haushalt (26 Prozent) über ein tragbares Navigationsgerät. Sprint's big surprise to be unlimited calling, data, text, and MMS for $70
We can't say we expected Sprint to actually surprise anyone with its "game changing" announcement tomorrow, and right on schedule, the details have come leaking out. Sprint to have unlimited cell-to-cell with any network?
Sprint could be on the verge of offering a near-unlimited calling plan for it subscribers, a late-breaking rumor claims. A tip sent to TechVI maintains that a known Sprint launch tomorrow will give those with at least an Everything Data plan of $70 per month or more will get unlimited calling between themselves and a cellphone on any other network. Mittlerweile hat Apple die Übersichtsseite auf die neuen Funktionen des heute vorgestellten iPod nanos der fünften Generation online gestellt und erklärt das Video-Feature, den Schrittzähler, das FM-Radio, Genius und die Voice-Over Option noch mal im Detail. Interessant sind vor allem die Demo-Videos der, mit der nun im nano integrierten Kamera augenommenen Mini-Clips (640 x 480 Pixel, bis zu 30 Bilder pro Sek).
So erlaubt der aktuelle iPod nano nicht nur die Video-Aufnahme unterwegs, sondern auch die Echtzeitanwendung 15 unterschiedlicher Videoeffekte wie Sepia, Schwarzweiß, Röntgen, Filmkörnung und Wärmebild.

Jobs: Amazon hiding poor Kindle sales
Apple chief Steve Jobs today took shots at Amazon while also explaining some of the decisions behind the new new iPods and his own health. The co-founder is famous for having attacked Amazon's Kindle in the past but has now said that the e-book reader's main flaw its specialized role: its cost is too high for a single function, Jobs said. He moreover suggested to the Times that Amazon's refusal to provide definite numbers for Kindle sales was a sign it hasn't succeeded in the market.

We know, it's easy to be distracted by the sexy, slim BRAVIA LCD HDTV in front of you, but refocus your eyes for a moment on that unassuming box to the lower right. LG BD390 Blu-ray player now supports VUDU streaming video
LG on Wednesday announced that its BD390 Blu-ray player now supports video streams from VUDU. The service will allow users to view content such as movies and TV shows, with over 2,200 movies available in 1080p resolution paired with 5.1-channel audio. Other supported sources for streaming video include Netflix, Roxio, CinemaNow and YouTube.

Griffin Technology has announced a new VoiceOver-compatible adapter for Appleís latest iPod nano 5G and iPod shuffle 3G. The Headphone Control Adapter with VoiceOver support connects to the userís headphones, enabling them to listen to spoken information such as the artist, track or playlist. The adapter works as an inline remote-control and can be used to control playback with any iPod model that supports transport controls, including the new iPod touch or iPod classic 120GB.

Several 640 GB 2.5" HD Models Available
Within coupe of hours, Western Digital and samsung have announced the availability of their respetive new high-end 640 GB 2.5" HD (thickness 9.5 mm). Respectively known as Caviar Blue and SpinPoint M7, they offer similar specifications, both with 8 MB of cache and 5400 rpm de vitesse angulaire. One will have to wait for real tests for identifying the best model.

QNAP intros desktop-, rackmount 4-bay NAS servers
QNAP recently announced it has added two new Turbo NAS servers to its extensive lineup, including the TS-419P for desktops and the rack-mounted TS-419U. Their specs are nearly identical, including the same Marvell 1.2GHz processor, 512MB of DDR2 RAM and support for up to 8TB. Either can hold both 2.5- and 3.5-inch hard drives in four hot-swappable bays. Storage expansion is made possible thanks to four USB ports and two eSATA ports.

Panasonic intros 2.1-channel Blu-ray home theater
Panasonic on Wednesday said it will soon release its first 2.1-channel Blu-ray Disc home theater system, the SC-BTX70. The upright system uses a proprietary Panasonic technology that can reproduce virtual 7.1-channel sound in Dolby's TrueHD and DTS-HD virtual 7.1 formats. The two speakers, made of bamboo, have a top-mounted design for better sound dispersion. The system is rated at 375W of power, with each speaker and the subwoofer getting 125W.

Sony intros 7.1ch wireless headphones, BT adapter
Sony Japan has recently introduced wireless headphones that operate on the 2.4GHz frequency and, more importantly, can reproduce 7.1-channel audio. The MDR-DS7100 set has support for Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital EX, DTS and DTS-ES surround sound formats. Their range is said to be a long 98 feet, while battery life is also longer than for most simpler wireless headphones at 13 hours. Each earpiece packs a near 2-inch (50mm) driver.

iTunes 9 breaks Pre sync, no problems for jailbroken iPhones
Apple has made sure to prevent Palm Pre owners from syncing their smartphones with the iTunes 9 update released Wednesday, according to several user reports posted on PreCentral's forums. The company has worked to prevent compatibility, starting with iTunes 8.2.1, after publishing a technical note warning users that third party phones would not be able to sync.

Sony intros Blu-ray player with online video streaming
Continuing its home theater launches for CEDIA, Sony tonight added its first truly network-aware Blu-ray player. Although earlier players have had BD-Live features, the BDP-N460 can stream videos from Netflix and YouTube as well as get music streams from Slacker, regardless of the attached TV. In a unique touch, the movie player is specifically optimized for Linksys' (Cisco's) WET610N Ethernet-to-Wi-Fi bridge and improves the stability of streaming over the wireless connection.

AT&T starts unlimited-calling A-List plan
Wireless provider AT&T on Wednesday announced the upcoming launch of its A-List with Rollover plan for qualifying plans. Like similar plans from competitors, including T-Mobile's MyFaves and Rogers' Top 5, A-List will let subscribers pick the five domestic numbers they call most often, with those minutes not counting towards their monthly totals. Unlike those plans, though, the minutes subscribers save can be rolled over to the next month.

Apple acts to boost high-end App sales in iTunes 9
Apple made a host of improvements to iTunes within iTunes 9, but at least one of those is going to be of huge benefit to a key category of the company’s stakeholders - Apps developers.
The company has introduced a new App Store chart for the most profitable applications, which it has dubbed, the ‘Top Grossing’ chart.
This is going to benefit some of its developers, as it joins the ‘Top Paid’ and ‘Top Free’ apps lists it already offers through the App Store.
What sets this list apart is that it ranks applications by the amount of revenue they generate, which should help ensure more expensive applications

Mitsubishi rolls out 1080p HC3800 projector for $1,395
It's not always easy for a projector to stand out from the pack these days, but it looks like Mitsubishi has turned to one of the most tried and true tricks in the book for its new HC3800 model: offer a ton of features for a great price. Sony XBR10 brings wireless 1080p to US
Sony used its turn at CEDIA to launch a raft of new home theater equipment headlined by the BRAVIA XBR10. An Americanized version of the Japanese ZX5, they have a new 60GHz Wireless HD media box that lets the TV sit completely separately from most video inputs while still playing them at full quality. It can play a 1080p picture at a full 60 frames per second without dropping frames or otherwise showing differences between this and a wired signal.
