iPod touch w/camera delayed?
French Mac Website HardMac (MacBidouille to Francophiles) is reporting that there might be some production problems slowing down the release of the new iPod touch products related to the new 3.2megapixel camera module. They postulate that the issue could cause delays in delivery of camera-toting iPods.
If this rumor does materialize then this would give Microsoft's Zune HD release of 09/15/09 a potential leg up in sales. We will all find out this Wednesday at Apple's "It's Only Rock & Roll" event. Make sure to stop by 9to5mac for the live show - we hope to grab a live video feed again.

Is Apple planning a $149 iPod touch?
We all know Apple will introduce its all-new potentially camera-equipped iPod range during its special event this week, now slight evidence has come to light supporting some earlier claims the company may stick it to the competition - principally the Zune HD - by introducing its new products at aggressively lowered prices.
Or it may not. This is speculation and rumour, after all.

China Unicom grabs a sliver of O2 parent, Telefonica, as Chinese iPhone deals unfurl
The corporations. They do keep growing, expanding, forming their own blueprint across the planetary landscape, a sleight of hand so crafy some things just get lost in the ether. Not this one though: Fresh from its iPhone deal, China Unicom today took a slice of another iPhone carrier, O2 parent company, Telefonica. (Or perhaps its true to say the two corporations took a slither of interest in one another).
Spanish-owned Telefonica is one of the largest fixed-line and mobile telecommunications companies in the world: 3rd in terms of number of clients (with the acquisition of O2, Movistar and Manx Telecom) only behind China Mobile and Vodafone, and in the top five in market value.

Philips CushionSpeaker examined, found to be ok cushion, decent speaker
It's not every day that someone attempts to redesign the humble laptop cushion, but Philips has done just that with its new CushionSpeaker which, somehow, someway manages to combine a cushion and a speaker. As our pals at Engadget Spanish found out first-hand at IFA, that combination actually delivers mostly as promised, but not without a few trade-offs. The good news is that speaker does seem to be of reasonable quality, and should be an improvement over most laptop speakers (the retractable USB cord is also a nice touch). Apple Event: Problem-Gerüchte & erste Bilder vor Ort
Am Mittwoch findet im Yerba Buena-Veranstaltungszentrum in San Francisco das von uns heiß erwartete Apple Event statt. Die Vorbereitungen vor Ort laufen bereits auf Hochtouren, bei Cult of Mac gibt es bereits erste Fotos der mit einem überdimensionalen iPod-Motiv verkleideten Fassade des Gebäudes.
Der Titel der Veranstaltung - It's only rock and roll, but we like it - legt nahe, dass das Thema Musik und somit iPods und iTunes im Mittelpunkt stehen. Erwartet werden wie gesagt neue Nano- und Touch-Modelle sowie iTunes 9.

LG booth shows its first Android phone
Although overlooked by most, LG's first Android-based phone was spotted at last week's IFA technology show. So far nicknamed the Etna Android, the phone seen by German magazine Chip is a typical QWERTY slider design but with a 3-inch touchscreen and a 5-megapixel camera. Little else was revealed by LG, though it's very likely the phone will also have 3G, GPS and Wi-Fi on top of expected features like Bluetooth.

LG Etna Android phone sneaks onto the scene at IFA
Well, well, looks like LG's got more in its Android bag than just that GW880 for China Mobile. Google opts to pull Euro books from online deal
Google today agreed to a truce with the European union in its deal to create an online book rights registry. The search engine firm's settlement will prevent Google from offering as public domain any European book that's still listed as commercially available in Europe. Any of those books will still be available in the US, but only if those with rights to the book agree to make it available.

All-in-one computers never die, they just keep getting wider -- and touchier, in this case. MSI's latest is the AE2400, a 24-inch, 1920 x 1080 panel with an integrated Intel Core 2 Duo CPU and NVIDIA GeForce 9400 graphics, doing all it can to make use of the multi-touch support in Windows 7. ASUS e-readers to involve dual screens, color
ASUS' promised e-book reader debut should not only involve more than one model but could represent a number of rarities or even firsts for the technology. While the mentioned Eee-branded reader would be basic and trade on its price -- an estimate has it costing as little as $164 -- ASUS chief Jerry Shen told the Times a second upscale model would have two color touchscreens and fold like a real book to give users two pages of content at once. AT&T-specific changes coming to iPhone firmware?
Apple and AT&T are together considering carrier-specific changes to the iPhone firmware, anonymous sources claim. A future update, possibly iPhone 3.1, may introduce two particular features designed to support AT&T's network. Leaks point to HP's first CULV, Core i7 notebooks
HP's impending plans to revamp its notebook line have likely been uncovered in advance today courtesy of a pair of leaks (one, two). Leading the group should be the Pavilion dv8, one of the first systems to use Intel's mobile Core i7; it should be an 18.4-inch desktop replacement with an early 1.6GHz quad-core processor that scales up to 2.8GHz when it can ramp down one or more cores. It's also expected that the system would come with a Blu-ray drive as well as 4GB of RAM and 640GB of storage, likely spread across two disks.

Apple approves officially-licensed Commodore 64 emulator for iPhone
Well, it's almost certainly not a signal that Apple is opening the door to emulators of all sorts on the iPhone, but the newly (and finally) approved Commodore 64 emulator is still a fairly notable first for the platform -- representing not only the first officially-available emulator, but perhaps the first app that actually runs code (even if it is a couple of decades old). In this case, that first bit apparently wasn't too big a point of contention for Apple, considering that the app had all the necessary licensing rights lined up, but the second issue was, and ran right up against a clause in the iPhone 2.

PS3 sales surge 999% in UK, top Wii thanks to slim model
Sony achieved a rare feat in the past week with the PS3 clearly outselling every other console in the UK, data from ChartTrack shows. In what's also the first week the slim PS3 has been available, the smaller and less expensive model helped PS3 sales jump 999 percent. The research firm wouldn't provide hard numbers to MCV but said that the DS Lite, Wii and Xbox 360 all sold in similar numbers and that the PS3 sold roughly three times as many units as these.

Future Firefox updates to check for outdated plug-ins
Beginning with two Tuesday updates, all future iterations of Mozilla's Firefox browser will check for at least some outdated plug-ins, the company has announced. Firefox 3.5.3 and 3.0.14 will both scan for the latest version of Flash, prompting users to visit a link where an updated plug-in can be downloaded. Sony unveils two 1080p wireless HDTVs
Choosing an uncharacteristic Monday launch date, Sony today launched the BRAVIA ZX5. The line brings wireless TV and uses the 60GHz Wireless HD format to pipe content from a separate TV Station hub to the set itself without wires. According to one of our reliable source (however, it remains a rumor), Apple is facing problems with the production of the new iPod Touch. The issue would be linked to the new camera module. We did not get any further details, but the problem has been spotted in the first dozen of thousands units produced. Nokia tests its first LTE-based 4G modem
Nokia on Monday said it has launched its first modem to ever support the upcoming Long Term Evolution (LTE) format for 4G cell data. The Internet Modem RD-3 (not yet pictured) can both support the new technology, which peaks at 100Mbps, but also 3G data over HSPA and 2G over EDGE to give users support of more established networks. It should support world roaming on 4G, though the frequency bands haven't been detailed.

One of the many "small-but-big" changes in Snow Leopard was Apple's change to a darker default 2.2 Gamma from the lighter 1.8 it has been using since the desktop publishing revolution began three decades ago. Sony rattles its sabres as it marches on Apple
One-time champion of music on the move with its decade-defining Walkman cassette players, Sony seems set to begin a land-grab for future growth in the mobile device segment, with SCEE head of developer relations, Zena Colaco, making a series of statements putting the smack down on the App Store economy.

Die Kinderschutz-Software "Sentry Parental Controls sammelt Informationen über die Äußerungen von Kindern im Web und verkauft diese Daten in gebündelter Form an die Marketing-Abteilungen anderer Firmen, wie jetzt bekannt wurde. Das iPhone als Security Token
Wer die SecurID-Benutzerauthentifizierung mit iPhones nutzen möchte, benötigt dafür den Token Seed und die RSA Authentication Manager Software. Für Firmen, die den Aufwand für eine eigene Lösung scheuen, könnten die entsprechenden Managed Authentication Services der Dunkel GmbH interessant sein. Dunkel ist ein auf Internetsicherheit und -verfügbarkeit spezialisierter Lösungsanbieter aus dem Rhein-Main-Gebiet und bietet diese Services jetzt auch mit Software Token für das iPhone an. Anwender können damit ihr Smartphone als "Authentifikator" nutzen, um sich im Firmennetz sicher anzumelden. Der Anbieter empfiehlt, Passwort oder PIN mit Software Token als zweitem, fälschungssicheren Sicherheitselement zu kombinieren. As expected, Apple has blessed Spotify's streaming subscription music application with a home in its iTunes App Store. Additionally, the app is also making a first, less ballyhooed appearance on the Android Market. The free app allows you to to stream any of its nearly 4 million tracks over WiFi or 3G and syncs playlists for playback while disconnected. Jeder siebte Schüler war schon Opfer von Cybermobbing
Eine Studie des Zentrums für empirische pädagogische Forschung (Zepf) der Universität Koblenz-Landau zeigt, dass mit der Nutzung von Internet und mobilen Telefonen auch Cybermobbing zunimmt. 16,5 Prozent der Befragten wurden schon einmal per E-Mail, Handy, Instant Messenger oder in virtuellen Chaträumen beleidigt, geächtet und gedemütigt. Die Forscher gehen davon aus, dass deutschlandweit rund 1,9 Millionen Schülerinnen und Schüler Opfer von Cybermobbing gewesen sein könnten.

C64-Emulator nun ohne Basic im App Store
Der C64-Emulator von Manomio ist nun nach einigem Hickhack wegen der Emulations-Funktionen im App Store erhältlich. Eigentlich hatte Manomio alles richtig gemacht. Adobe Principal Scientist Lars Borg explains why Snow Leopard changed to Gamma 2.2
One of the many "small-but-big" changes in Snow Leopard was Apple's change to a darker default 2.2 Gamma from the lighter 1.8 it has been using since the desktop publishing revolution began three decades ago. The choice of choosing 2.2, the Windows' default Gamma setting, will help designers who design for both Mac and PCs (and who doesn't anymore?) get output that matches on both platforms - a welcome change for those who had to try to please people on both sides of the aisle.
But why did Apple change, and more importantly why now?

Retro: Arkanoid und C64 im App Store
Der Hersteller Taito bringt mit Arkanoid (3,99 Euro) einen weiteren 80er Jahre-Klassiker auf den iPod touch und das iPhone. Über 100 Levels versprechen eine Zeitreise zum Beginn der Computerspiel-Geschichte.
Pefekt dazu passt auch der am Wochenende veröffentlichte C64-Emulator (3,99 Euro). In der Basisversion sind hier die Spiele Dragons Den, Le Mans, Jupiter Lander, Arctic Shipwreck und Jack Attack mit dabei. Weitere Spiele sollen später direkt über das Programm nachgekauft werden können.

Mozilla stellt dritte Alpha von Fennec für Windows Mobile bereit
Mozilla hat am Freitag die dritte Alphaversion seines Mobil-Browsers Fennec für Windows Mobile veröffentlicht. Die neue Testversion unterstützt mehr Bildschirmauflösungen, was eine Installation auf mehr Geräten als bisher ermöglicht. Zudem haben die Entwickler die Startzeit des Browsers verkürzt. Laut Mozilla tritt dieser Effekt allerdings erst nach einem Neustart in Kraft.

The Japanese want to develop their own processor
The Japanese government has decided to federate the majority of its electronic industrialists in order to develop a new processor. Thus, huge groups such as Fujitsu, Toshiba, Panasonic, NEC, Hitachi Canon… will put in common their knowledge to make and will manufacture a Japanese made cpu in 2012. One does not know the specificities of this processor nor even if it will be X86 compatible, but it will have to be particularly energy saving and to consume 70% less than what currently exists.
It will be fitted in many offered products by these companies and will have to be able to function even in the event of a long period of power outage in the event of major natural disaster (Japan is in a highly seismic zone). IFA: Weitere Infos zur TomTom-Halterung
Direkt von TomTom haben wir weitere Infos bekommen, die das Car-Kit betreffen. Größtenteils decken sich diese mit den Aussagen im englischsprachigen FAQ auf der Website des Herstellers (wir berichteten). Es ist ein so genannter Aktivhalter, der das iPhone mit Strom versorgt, einen eigenen GPS-Chipsatz und Mikrofon/Lautsprecher bietet. Die Auslieferung soll im Oktober beginnen, der Preis laut dem Marketing Manager Hannes Albrecht zweistellig bleiben.

The end of power cables within 5 years
A startup called WiTricity has the ambitious target of making power cables obsolete within 5 years. To arrive at this point, it intends to use a technology called " magnetically coupled resonance" , or magnetic coupling of resonance that would be able to supply a mp3 player or a larger electronic device such as a computer or a television set. To reassure, Eric Giler, the CEO of the company says that the generated magnetic field would be without danger since it would be equivalent to the usual Earth's magnetic field between its two poles.

iPhone auf dem Fahrrad laden: KE Charger
Das jüngste Gadget von Kuhn Elektronik wird am Nabendynamo des Fahrrads angeschlossen und lädt Elektronikgeräte beim Radeln einfach mit. Egal wie lang die Tour auch wird, die Stromversorgung für das beispielsweise als Navi eingesetzte iPhone soll garantiert sein. Ein wenig Schwung ist allerdings erforderlich - der Ladevorgang startet laut Hersteller bei ca. 10 km/h. Der "KE Charger" enthält die komplette Anschlusstechnik, sodass kein separates Ladekabel erforderlich ist. Die mitgelieferte Stromzuführung wird einfach am Nabendynamo angeschlossen und das Ladekabel mit dem Endgerät verbunden.
Das Produkt wird nicht nur für Apfelsmartphones sondern auch für Mobiltelefone von u. a. RIM, Nokia, HTC, Palm, Samsung oder Sony Ericsson angeboten. Spotify is on the App Store...in Europe
As we mentioned last week, Spotify, the all-you-can-eat subscription music service, was approved for the App Store. It looks to have just gone live in Europe where you can now have access to over 6 million songs on your iPhone for roughly $20 a month.
Not a bad deal but there's one monster catch. Like all third party apps, it doesn't work in the background. Which sucks for a music player. The App is free (iTunes Link) - but only in Europe for the moment. The service is hitting North America in the coming months.
Also, it will be interesting to see if Apple revisits the iTunes all-you-can-download service that was rumored by the

Here's some advice for those Skype iPhone developers: Stop everything else you are doing right now and work on getting Push Notifications working - Nothing else matters until that works. They've updated the following (and some of these things are nice) but frankly we'd trade all of this and more for Push Notifications.

Philips' recently unveiled CushionSpeaker laptop stand is designed for the bedridden among us, combining a soft laptop stand with a built-in speaker for amplifying those lap-based movie sessions. All NVidia CUDA-ready Graphic Cards Support Open CL
A representative from NVidia provided comments and details about their graphic cards and support for Snow Leopard. There are 10 models: GeForce 9400M, GeForce 9600M GT, GeForce 8600M GT, GeForce GT 120, GeForce GT 130, GeForce GTX 285, GeForce 8800 GT, GeForce 8800 GS, Quadro FX 4800, and Quadro FX 5600. They are all compatible with CUDA, but also with Open CL. On the other side, ATI/AMD only offers 2 graphic cards supporting Open CL: Radeon HD 4850 and 4870.
This difference between both companies can be explained by the choice of technologies. When a Mac sports a GeForce, open CL works via a CUDA filter. For the Radeon, codes are only properly translated by some specific circuits found in series 200 and 3000 of Radeon HD 48x0. This difference can explain why GeForces currently offer the best performance level with Open CL. Marktanteil des Walkman jetzt über dem des iPod in Japan
242 Wochen hielt die Marktführung des iPod in Japan, nun hat es Sony geschafft, dieser beeindruckenden Serie ein Ende zu setzen. Vom 24. bis 30. August konnte Sony mehr MP3-Player verkaufen als Apple und kam auf einen Marktanteil von 43 Prozent (Apple: 42,1 Prozent). Vermutlich wird Sony die Marktführung nicht lange halten können, aber diese eine Woche war schon genug, um die Apple-Fanboys von MacDailyNews zum Knurren zu bringen - man solle doch bitte auch die iPhones miteinrechnen.

Switch to Snow Leopard: Fastest Switch Ever!?
As we do it from time to time, we have been looking at the details of our visitor stats, trying to identify those already using Snow Leopard. The day before its official availability, 6% of our readers were already tagged as running SL. If among them we would find developers, other might have already get the "Golden Master" version available on P2P network. We then look at the way the switch to Snow Leopard took place between August 28th and September 4th:
Figures are impressive and speak by themselves. On the evening of the first official availability day, SL was already running on the computer of 11.5% of our Mac visitors. Impressive. In one week, 42% of our Mac visitors already switch to SL. According to our projections within the next 72 hours, Mac OS X 10.6 will become the most used OS among our Mac visitors. NVidia GeForce GTX 285: The Queen of Open CL
Rob-Art from Barefeats used the new Open CL benchmark application, Galaxies, to test most of NVidia graphic cards with Open CL. This new application is much more complete than Open CL Benchmark as it uses a graphical interface and is able to evaluate the GPU alone and associated with CPUs. At the end of the game, the GeForce GTX 285 is the fastest in a Mac Pro Nehalem, about twice faster than a GF 8800 GT and 5 times faster than a GF 120GT.
Be careful if you plan to use this benchmarking applications, it could b-not boot on a Mac Pro 2008 sporting a Radeon, and even generated a Kernel Panic on a MacBook Pro 15" (2009).

Adobe Changed its Mind about CS3 on Snow Leopard
The recent announcement from Adobe for NOT supporting CS3 on Snow Leopard had a massive impact on the web and leaded to major wave on complains. Blackberry Desktop Manager Almost Ready
The best way to compete with the iPhone is certainly to offer Mac users the ultimate compatibility between Mac OS X and a third party mobile phone. Palm did it by forcing iTunes to recognize the Palm Pré as an iPod. As a consequence, both companies have some difficulties to exchange or communicate at the moment.
Rim decided to act differently with its BlackBerry, and developed a dedicated application known as Blackberry Desktop Manager.
It offers a deep integration and compatibility with Mac OS X, supporting synchronization with iCal, Contacts, Notes, etc and iTunes music library. This application should be available in a near future and could offer an excellent opportunity to Blackberry owners to switch to Mac

Snow Leopard and Windows 7 Improve Notebook Battery Lifetime
Today, more than 50% of sold computers are notebooks, so all OS have to provide better power management in order to get the best ratio between performance and battery lifetime. Recently, CNET showed that Snow Leopard improved battery lifetime of a MacBook Pro 17", especially when idle. Indeed, power consumption decreased by 4.4 W, improving overall lifetime by 10 to 15%, even though it drains 4% more power when fully loaded.
When comparing Vista and Windows 7, the battery lifetime increase by 1.4 hour! This is a huge improvement, however one should also remember than Vista was particularly not optimized for notebook and its power management tools were minimal. Microsoft seems to have taken note of the increasing number of notebooks among the worldwide computer market and the increasing need of lifetime necessary for mobile users. Spotify app goes live for iPhone, Android
Spotify tonight quietly saw the release of both the iPhone (1.7MB) and Android versions of its promised mobile app. On both platforms, the free app lets those with a Spotify Premium subscription (roughly $14 per month) stream the service's entire catalog, including music from all the major labels. They also have access to an offline mode that caches whole playlists for use when Internet access over 3G or Wi-Fi isn't available.

Commodore 64 emulator now $5 on iPhone
The good news is that Apple has finally let an emulator on the iPhone. The bad news is that it is so neutered that it might not be that great of a value proposition. As Arnold Kim reports yesterday on Touch Arcade and today on Macrumors, Apple appears to have requested the removal of the Commodore BASIC interpreter from the application which allows running arbitrary code (or any fun stuff).
So you basically get five 20+year old games (Dragons Den, Le Mans, Jupiter Lander, Arctic Shipwreck, and Jack Attack) for

Solar Roads get small DoE contract, confidence to change the world
Solar roadways? Yeah, we've seen 'em before, but we've yet to see America's own Department of Energy give any one development company such a notable vouch of confidence. Just recently, the DoE handed over a $100,000 contract to Solar Roadways, which is just enough to build a prototype of the "first ever Solar Road panel." The 12- x 12-foot panels could theoretically be embedded into roads, and when shined upon, could pipe good, clean electricity straight into the grid. Heck, they could even boast LEDs in order to alert drivers to upcoming accidents or changes in road conditions.
