Sony: games 'lost' in iPhone's App Store

The Beatles finally coming to iTunes, according to Yoko Ono
Even more than in past years, the build-up to Apple's iPod event this Wednesday has been nothing if not a bevy of The Beatles / iTunes rumors -- the company even broke with its traditional Tuesday event date to have it instead on "09-09-09," the same day The Beatles Rock Band and a new box set are due to hit store shelves. Now it looks like we've heard it from none other than Yoko Ono herself, who in a now-pulled Sky News article confirmed that the Fab Four's headed for digital distribution. ASUS shows ultra-slim Designo MS LCD monitors
ASUS recently announced it will soon release a number of ultra-slim Designo MS Series LCD monitors, which includes the 23.6-inch MS246H/D, the 23-inch MS236H/D, 21.5-inch MS226H, 22-inch MS227N and 20-inch MS202N/D. All have a similar design theme, inspired by 1s and 0s from the binary number system and are just 0.65 inches (16.5mm) in thickness. A spherical ring, called Ergo-Fit Technology, acts as a stand, and lets users adjust the tilt angle with one finger.

If you're looking for some ultra-light laptop love in your life, Dell today debuted its 14-inch and 15.6-inch Insprion Z series portables. Both models have more or less the same specs, meaning up to a 1.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo SU9400 with GMA X4500HD graphics, 1366 x 768 resolution, 8GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 802.11a/b/g/draft-N, Bluetooth, a 7-in-1 card reader, 1.3 megapixel camera, and a 6-cell battery. Starting prices for the pair go as low as $599, but if you're looking to load up on as much as possible from the get-go, expect to pay somewhere in the vicinity of $1,034.

InFocus intros ScreenPlay 8602 home theater projector
InFocus has revived its ScreenPlay projector lineup with the SP8602, which offers native 1080p resolution and is meant for use in home theater installations. The SP8602 uses Texas Instruments' DLP DarkChip technology with BrilliantColor, Pixelworks' DNX 10-bit video processor, and InFocus' proprietary 120Hz motion engine. It's also said to have a 30,000:1 contrast ratio and 1,300 lumens of brightness.

Android-powered Galaxy Lite spotted
Samsung's first Android powered handset, the i5700 Galaxy Lite, has been spotted in photos and a video, thanks to a recent ai.rs blog report. Some basic specs of the device were also revealed and confirm its role as a step down from the full-size i7500. They include the handset's 3.2-megapixel camera without a flash, 1GB of internal memory and a built-in microSD memory card slot. An AMOLED touchscreen is also part of the device specs, though its size is unknown.

Letter Opener 3 plug-in gets Snow Leopard support
restoroot.com has released an upgraded edition of its winmail.dat conversion plug-in for Mail, Letter Opener 3. Winmail objects are automatically converted into attachments, vCards and iCal files, allowing proper interaction with Outlook messages. Version 3 features a complete rewrite for Snow Leopard compatibility, as well as a number of small functionality improvements.

ASUS kicks off CULV-based UL series ultraportables
ASUS has begun the week by launching an entirely new line of notebooks centering on Intel's CULV processor mix. The UL series uses a relatively thin (about 1 inch) and lightweight aluminum shell that renders it much easier to carry even with the DVD burners present in most models. As with most CULV systems, they all have particularly long battery life and in some cases run for up to 12 hours on a charge.

The BlackBerry Onyx hasn't exactly kept itself a secret in the past few months, so it's no surprise that we're seeing what looks to be the official press image and release from T-Mobile well before the handset's launch. No big surprises here, really -- it's still a 3G mashup of the Bold and the Curve 8900 with that new optical trackball -- but apparently RIM's preloading it with the Amazon MP3 store, so that's slightly interesting. Sprint now offering $100 service credit to Pre buyers who port a number
We were expecting a Pre price cut today, but it looks like Sprint has slightly different plans -- instead of lowering the outright price of the handset, the carrier is offering new Pre customers a $100 service credit if they port a number from a different carrier. Yeah, that's a little odd -- especially since the credit is spread out over three months, instead of applied all in one go. Best Buy carrying new iPod nano, touch cases early
Best Buy on Tuesday inadvertently tipped off Apple's plans for tomorrow by posting entries for unreleased iPods. Belkin and Griffin cases for the fifth-generation iPod nano and third-generation iPod touch have appeared and support the notion that at least these two will be updated at Apple's special event on Wednesday. Sprint offers $100 credit for defecting to Palm Pre
Hoping to lure in undecided customers, Sprint today began offering a $100 credit for those who buy a Palm Pre while switching away from another carrier. The discount is put on the customer's bill within three months but brings the practical cost of the phone down to $99, or less than half what it cost on launch just three months ago. Elliptic Labs returns with more red hot touchless UI action
Elliptic Labs is back on the scene with another demo of its touchless UI. This time 'round the company's teamed up with Opera and presents us with a much more polished affair, not to mention a couple technical details. Dell adds 14-inch, 15-inch CULV Inspirons
Dell today grew its budding CULV (Consumer Ultra Low Voltage) notebook line with two mid-sized models. The 14-inch Inspiron 14z and 15.6-inch Inspiron 15z together use the slower but also much cooler and more efficient processors to both slim down significantly from the regular systems while also shedding weight and extending their battery lives: the systems can last over eight hours (8.5 on the 14z) on a six-cell pack.

HTC Tattoo spotted on video, stripped of faceplates
Somebody's tracked down HTC's new Tattoo handset and managed to unceremoniously strip it off its faceplates on video, providing our first real look at the hardware "IRL." NEC Display intros two new portable digital projectors
NEC on Tuesday announced the release of two new digital projectors, the NP110 and NP215. Part of the company's budget Value Series, the portable DLP projectors are meant to be taken to meeting and conference rooms. While they look nearly identical, several key features differ between the NP215 and NP110, including the 2,500 lumens of brightness for the NP215 (versus 2,200 for the NP110). The NP215 also gets a 1024x768 native resolution compared to the NP110's 800x600, but both accept input up to 1600x1200.

HP launches printer-themed App Studio
HP has introduced the App Studio, a new service attached to a recent printer, the Photosmart Premium with TouchSmart Web. Apps allow the printer to quickly print off sanctioned content, such as movie tickets, art projects from Disney, photos from Flickr or 60 Minutes articles from CBS. The service uses an open API, and HP is hoping to introduce a variety of new print apps in the future, in some cases based on user suggestions.

Russia's FAS closes antitrust probe into Microsoft
A three-month old investigation by Russian anti-monopoly service FAS into the supposed violations of local anti-trust laws by software giant Microsoft has been closed, with no wrongdoing found. Microsoft was accused of cutting back shipments of its Windows XP operating system both as a standalone product and preloaded onto PCs and over the pricing policy on the aging but still popular OS.

TomTom intros open-source dynamic location tech
GPS navigator maker TomTom on Tuesday announced it has developed a new, open-source standard that would ideally bring real-time weather, traffic and other key information on navigation devices from many manufacturers as well as map data from various types of vendors. Called OpenLR, the technology promises to eat up little bandwidth and decrease users' commuting times thanks to its integration with traffic information systems and ability to offer route guidance that takes into account up-to-the-minute data such as construction or accidents.

Apple exec quashes some Apple TV rumors
Apple is unlikely to turn the Apple TV into a DVR set-top, despite analyst suggestions and hints in patents, says research firm Caris & Company. Analysts from the firm are said to have met recently with Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer, who immediately tried to dispel rumors. "While some have wondered whether Apple might ultimately try to integrate traditional cable set-top box (decoding) functionality into its Apple TV product," a Caris investor note reads, "Mr. Oppenheimer pretty much killed that concept and said that it just doesn't fit Apple's business."

Windows 7 allows remote blue-screen attacks
Windows 7 when it ships next month will be vulnerable to an attack that hasn't been possible since 1999, a new vulnerability found by a security researcher shows. Sending a deliberately malformed network negotiation request can force a Windows 7 system into a page fault that triggers a "blue screen of death" error, even without the user's help in launching the code. The attack affects both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of the OS.

Microsoft's training materials teach Best Buy employees how to trash Linux
Look, nobody's saying Linux is perfect for every consumer (or even most), but Microsoft's "training material" for Best Buy employees casts the open source operating system in a bit of a bad light -- and isn't exactly accurate. A few of the humorous tidbits in the Linux comparison guide include mentioning World of Warcraft as incompatible with Linux (despite great support for it under WINE), calling Linux's safety reputation a "myth," and describing Linux updates and upgrades as difficult and time consuming. The availability of Windows Live Essentials as a "free download" is also quite laughable -- Linux has endless free alternatives to Microsoft's Live Essentials, and many of them are better than what Microsoft offers. Umfrage: Studenten schlampen beim Backup
Studenten nehmen es mit ihrer Datensicherheit nicht besonders genau, so das Ergebnis einer Umfrage von Kroll Ontrack. 91 Prozent der 270 Befragten sichern ihre Daten zwar grundsätzlich, nach Ansicht des Anbieters von Software und Services zur Datenrettung und Datenlöschung sind aber die Abstände zu groß. Nur 36 Prozent erstellen eine wöchentliche Sicherung. 51 Prozent sichern ihre Daten einmal pro Jahr. Bei weiteren 13 Prozent ist der zeitliche Abstand zwischen zwei Backups größer als 12 Monate.

The Beatles blame EMI for delayed downloads through Apple's iTunes
Former Beatle Sir Paul McCartney this afternoon blamed record label EMI for any delay in making music from the band available through iTunes.
McCartney said that he wants music from the band to be made available as downloads, and slammed EMI for the long wait so far.
Speaking to the NME, he said: “We were having problems with iTunes – well not iTunes, EMI was the problem – with downloading, which we'd like to do because that's how a lot of people get their music.”

Gene Munster isn't expecting any surprise announcements at tomorrow's "It's only Rock and Roll" event. PS3 Slim sales up nearly 1000% in the UK, Noel quits Oasis (again)
It looks like Engadget editors aren't the only folk who prefer technology that's slimmer, cheaper, and better. Sony erwirkt erneut einstweilige Verfügung gegen Online-Händler
Sony Deutschland hat seinen Anfang des Jahres angekündigten Kampf gegen "irreführende Internetangebote" fortgesetzt und erneut eine einstweilige Verfügung erwirkt. Betroffen ist ein Händler, der in seinem Online-Shop falsche Angaben zur Garantiezeit sowie unwahre Angaben über Eigenschaften und Lieferbedingungen zu einem Fernseher der Bravia-Reihe sowie die Leistungen des Kundendienstes gemacht hatte. Laut Hersteller hat sich der Händler damit wettbewerbswidrig verhalten.

Samsung Rogue, Intensity official for Verizon
Verizon on Tuesday added a pair of expected messaging phones that also include its first phone with an OLED display. The Rogue has a 3.1-inch, AMOLED touchscreen that produces better color than an LCD and pits the phone against AT&T's equally Samsung-made Impression for image quality. The Rogue also shares multiple basic features like Samsung's TouchWiz interface, the slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a 3-megapixel camera. Flickr unveils dedicated iPhone app
Yahoo has introduced a dedicated Flickr application for the iPhone, which attempts to promote the media-sharing service and simplify its use. iTunes Store: Ruhe vor dem Sturm?
Wer wie wir regelmäßig die Neuerungen im iTunes Store und dessen Unterabteilung App Store verfolgt, wundert sich über ausbleibende Aktualisierungen. Wir können uns jedenfalls nicht daran erinnern, wann das gewohnte Dienstags-Update zuletzt ausblieb. Apple schiebt sonst stets in der Nacht von Montag auf Dienstag Aktualisierungen und neue Grafik-Elemente nach, heute hat sich allerdings nichts geändert und auch der 99 Cent-Film ist noch der von letzter Woche.
Ebenso ruhig ist es derzeit im App Store. Statt 200 und mehr schaffen es seit gestern gerade mal um die zehn neue Programme pro Tag in den Store. Noch drastischere Zahlen schildern unsere französischen Kollegen von Hardmac: statt der dort anscheinend üblichen 400 Anwendungen wurden gestern gerade mal sieben Stück gezählt.

France Telecom and Deutsche Telekom have announced plans to combine their UK Orange and T-Mobile operations, part of a dash to convince Apple to grant the operators rights to distribute the iPhone.

HTC Tattoo has resistive touchscreen, a few regrets
We suppose it was inevitable. In the effort to take Android to the mainstream (i.e., cheap), HTC had to commit that most controversial of technological sins: fronting a touchscreen-only device with a resistive sensor. Granted, Android is more prepared for pairing a resistive screen with your stubby fingers than something like the stylus-oriented Windows Mobile, but it's still not going to be a joy for implementing the OS's few gestures or the imperfect touchscreen keyboard. How much storage do you need for Time Machine back-ups? Added to which, how much do you use for casual back-ups and your iTunes library? Perhaps a Terabyte or two?

C64-Emulator wieder aus dem App Store entfernt
Die Situation erinnert an Netshare, mit dem sich das iPhone in einen Wireless-LAN-Hotspot verwandeln lies. Damals wurde Netshare mehrmals von Apple im App Store veröffentlicht, um es kurz darauf wieder heraus zu nehmen. Ähnliches ist nun mit dem C64-Emulator geschehen, der nun nach wenigen Tagen nun doch wieder aus dem App Store genommen wurde. Apple pulls C64 App after Manomio shenanigans revealed
Come on Manomio, what did you expect? Did you really think Apple would leave your C64 emulator in the App Store after it was revealed that the BASIC interpreter was still in your software, exposed with a little up, up, down, down, left, right trickery? That's a clear breach of the SDK and well, downright sneaky. In a blog post to its site, Manomio claims that it had "no intention of tricking basic into the app" and only left the code in to be remotely activated later should Apple change its policy. Of course, with so much money left on the table, Manomio promptly submitted a new, presumably BASIC-free app for approval. Something we're sure Apple will get right on.

Intel today brought its most recent chip architecture into the mainstream with the official start to Lynnfield, its lower-cost but also more advanced desktop platform. UK-Markt: Big Magenta und Orange Seite an Seite?
Das Handelsblatt zitiert AP mit der Unternehmensmeldung, dass die Deutsche Telekom AG und France Télécom den Zusammenschluss ihrer britischen Töchter T-Mobile UK und Orange UK zum neuen Mobilfunk-Marktführer in Großbritannien planen. Die Deutsche Telekom soll damit auf die Schwierigkeiten ihrer Mobilfunksparte T-Mobile in Großbritannien reagieren. Im geplanten Gemeinschaftsunternehmen sollen DTAG und France Télécom je 50 Prozent halten. Aus der Integration beider Unternehmen werden laut AP-Meldung Synergien von mehr als 4,0 Milliarden Euro erwartet. Die operativen Kosten sollen von 2014 an um jährlich mehr als 508 Mio Euro gesenkt werden. Der entstehende Carrier wäre mit rund 30 Mio. Kunden das führende Mobilfunkunternehmen im UK. We received an interesting message from the administrator of the monappstore.com site:
I manage the monappstore.com site and thus supervises regularly the new applications that are available at the AppStore. I think that something important is being prepared at the level of the AppStore, surely in connection with the special event of tomorrow because there has almost been no new application published since September 4. It is rare to see such a pause (4 days) in the continuous flood of releases. I noted only 7 applications with a release date after the 4/9 whereas on the previous days there was an average of more than 400 per day…
It is difficult to imagine the reasons that forced Apple to make such a pause. It is too abrupt to be due to an unspecified vacation. There is a certainty to the bet that something will change…

Paid Apps: 80 Dollar pro iPhone
Entgegen anderslautender Zahlen von AdMob, ist AppsFire zu der Erkenntnis gelangt, dass iPhone-Nutzer durchschnittlich 80 US-Dollar in Paid Apps investieren - "per Device", also pro iPhone und Gerätelebenszyklus. AdMob hatte "im Schnitt neun US-Dollar monatlich" ermittelt. Für die aktuelle Untersuchung hat AppsFire anonymisiert die Daten aus Juli und August von 1.200 iPhone-Nutzern in ihrem Netzwerk erhoben und untersucht. Die Anwenderdaten stammten zur Hälfte aus den USA mit weiteren Schwerpunkten bei französischen und japanischen Nutzern.
Die untersuchten 1.200 Anwender haben über 15.000 Apps installiert - 65 pro iPhone - und dafür im Schnitt 80 Dollar ausgegeben. Techcrunch hat das mit der Zahl der tatsächlich verfügbaren Apps hochgerechnet und kommt auf 400.000.000 Doll

Bericht: Orange UK und T-Mobile UK fusionieren
Wie Dow Jones Newswire berichtet, planen die Deutsche Telekom und France Telecom, ihr Mobilfunkgeschäft in Großbritannien zusammenzulegen. Das Joint Venture aus Orange UK und T-Mobile UK wird dem Bericht zufolge über einen Marktanteil von 38 Prozent verfügen und damit O2 als Marktführer ablösen. Eine verbindliche Vereinbarung sollen die beiden Unternehmen heute vor Öffnung der europäischen Börsen bekannt geben.

Das Vektorgrafikprogramm FreeHand hat eine eingeschworene Fangemeinde, aber ein großes Problem: Nach der Übernahme von Macromedia durch Adobe wird es nicht weiterentwickelt. T-Mobile UK and Orange to merge, still clash
Step aside O2 and Vodafone, there's a new sherif in town. At least there will be if the announced 50:50 merger between T-Mobile UK and Orange can be signed into existence by November as planned. The new venture would give France Telecom and Deutsch Telekom units a 37% share of the UK mobile marketplace leaving O2 with 27% and the once mighty Vodafone with 25%. Die inzwischen auf beachtlichen Funktionsumfang angewachsene 3D-Rendering-Lösung Cheetah3D liegt mittlerweile in Version 4.7 vor. Der Duke braucht kein "Forever", um iPhone-Spieler zu verwirren, für Apples Mobiltelefon reicht auch "3D". Probleme mit Kameramodul könnten iPod touch verzögern
Nicht das jüngste, aber wohl das letzte Gerücht vor dem Apple-Event: AppleInsider berichtet unter Berufung auf eine verlässliche Quelle, dass sich die Auslieferung des iPod touch 3G aufgrund technischer Schwierigkeiten verzögern könnte. Ähnliches ist auch Hardmac zu Ohren gekommen. Schuld daran soll das Kameramodul sein.

Mobilfunk-Marketing stärkt deutsche Wirtschaft
Die Mobile Marketing Association (MMA) hat gestern im Vorfeld seines Mobile Marketing Forum in Berlin eine exklusive Studie von Lightspeed Research veröffentlicht. Das Ergebnis zeigt, dass auf Mobiltelefone zugeschnittenes Marketing 2009 in den letzten 12 Monaten zu Verbraucherausgaben von über 560 Mio. Euro geführt hat. In Großbritannien wurden im gleichen Zeitraum 450 Mio. Euro ausgegeben, so dass allein in diesen beiden Märkten in diesem Jahr durch Mobilfunk-Marketing insgesamt mehr als 1 Billion Euro an Verbraucherausgaben generiert wurden.
18,1 % der volljährigen deutschen Verbraucher gaben an, dass Handy-Marketing sie zum Kauf eines Produkts oder Dienstes animiert hat. Dabei gaben sie in den letzten 12 Monaten im Durchschnitt 43,40 Euro aus. Die Studie wurde in Deutschland und Großbritannien durchgeführt. Cheetah 3D 4.7, the latest version of the 3D rendering, modelling and animation software for the Mac was released today. The update delivers a series of bug fixes for rendering issues and texture importing, along with support for Macís newest operating system Snow Leopard. The software delivers a variety of polygon and spline modeling tools, and enables users to create and animate 3D scenes. Is the iPhone a Bad Deal for Carriers?
A study performed by a danish group, Strand Consult, might generate some buzz.According to their investigation, the iPhone is not really the golden device to make money, at last for carriers. To reach such conclusion they studied the following factors:
Apple sells the iPhone at premium price to the carrier.
Apple would ask a percentage of iPhone-driven profits (Apple is suspected to have asked for a fee for TV applications for the iPhone
Managing the device and customers is time and money consuming for carriers.
To support this conclusion, they used information from different carriers that warn investors about smaller than expected iPhone-driven profits. We can also add that the iPhone prevent carriers to get revenues from selling ringtones and music tracks, as it reserved to the iTunes Store.

Fixing an Issue with Mail and Address Book with Snow Leopard
Hereafter is a report from Gérôme.
A quick message to explain how to fix the issue affecting Mail and Address Book when running Snow Leopard.
Symptoms: multicolor rotating wheel when launching Mail or Contacts.
Solution :
1) Remove the following files: AddressBook-v22~.abcddb and AddressBook-v22.abcddb from the following folder ~/library/Application Support/AddressBook.
2) Remove all "intelligent/smart groups" from the Address book located in ~/library/Application Support/AddressBook/Metadata. Those groups are easily identified by their extension "ABSmartGroup.abcdg".
Once completed, Mail and Address Book will launch without any problem. Sure, you will have to redefine your smart groups, but it should not take so much time, and at least both applications are now working.

Nokia N97 firmware 2.0 looks to squash major pain points

Palm Pre rumored to be dropping to $150 on September 8th
We've already seen the Palm Pre dip below its $199 list price during a few limited, occasionally inadvertent sales, but it looks like it could soon be dropping well under the $200 mark for a slightly longer period of time -- at least if a purportedly legit leaked document is to be believed.
