LG reveals launch timeline for Chocolate Touch
LG on Friday announced that its first touchscreen phone, the Chocolate BL40 handset will begin shipping in the UK starting in mid-September, then arrive at other European countries before making a full worldwide release in October. The device sports a wide 4-inch, 800x480 resolution touchscreen with a 21:9 aspect ratio which can be split into two virtual halves for multitasking.

Nokia Twist pictured, dated for Verizon
Photos of the Nokia Twist 7705 handset have been revealed in what appears to be an ad for Verizon Wireless, thanks to a Friday Engadget[leak. The device sports a swiveling form factor, with a QWERTY keyboard that is unveiled when the device is opened. When closed, the device is square shaped, and it's expected users will be able to customize the look thanks to an assortment of faceplates and lights around the swivel ring, the color of which can be changed by the user.

Nokia N97 sells two million units in three months, Nokla sells two dozen
Well, maybe Nokia recently announced a 66 percent yearly drop in Q2 profit. And perhaps N97 reviews have been, how we say, less than stellar. But there definitely seems to be a fan base for the handset: according to Mobile News, sales of both this guy and the 5800 XpressMusic combined to total 10 million in the last 10 months, with sales for the former adding up to a whopping two million since its launch three months ago. Neues Spiel von Electronic Arts: Boggle
Nach all dem Navi-Kram mal wieder ein Spiel: Electronic Arts hat etwas neues zubieten, und zwar das Denkspiel Boggle (2,39 Euro). Im Großen und Ganzen geht es darum, unter Zeitdruck möglichst viele Wörter aus einem erwürftelten Buchstaben-Pool zu bilden. JAMF enterprise titles now Snow Leopard-compatible
JAMF Software has announced that its enterprise software product line is now fully Snow Leopard-ready. Casper Suite 7.1, Recon Suite 7.1, Composer 7.1 and Imaging Suite releases are all fully-certified and available. Casper Suite aids administrators with a centralized framework used to inventory, image, update and maintain Mac computers, while the Recon Suite provides a method of surveying network devices and computers, along with iPhones.

GameSalad to aid in publishing user games on App Store
GameSalad has announced it will soon launch an iPhone publishing system for titles produced with its game creation utility. The tool is free, and meant for non-programmers, as it is capable of implementing AI and other gameplay components using drag-and-drop construction. The software features project, scene and actor editors, and can uproot asset formats like Ogg Vorbis, PNG and JPG.

Loopt strikes deal with AT&T for background monitoring on iPhone
Well, it's not quite the sort of background application that most folks have been hoping for on the iPhone, but Loopt has nonetheless scored something of a first for its location-based iPhone app. As Silicon Alley Insider reports, the company has struck a deal directly with AT&T that'll let it monitor your location whenever you have a network connection, regardless of whether you have the Loopt app open or not. That, as you might have surmised, is done entirely on a server-to-server basis, and it'll initially be made available as a part of free 14-trial program limited to 5,000 users, after which it'll run them and everyone else $3.99 a month (added to your AT&T bill). Photos of LG Chocolate Touch for Verizon surface
New images of what is said to be the LG Chocolate Touch for Verizon Wireless have surfaced recently. Although the new photos don't match up with older sightings of the device, the phone is nonetheless described as the successor to Verizon's existing Chocolate line. No new specs for the handset were revealed. There is also the possibility that the device in these images is not a Chocolate, but some other, as yet unnamed LG handset.

Amazon compensates for pulled Kindle e-book
Amazon has made reparations for deleting classic classic Orwell novels Animal Farm and 1984 from users' Kindle readers by sending them a letter of apology and checks for $30 or an Amazon gift certificate in the same amount. Users also have the option of having 1984 re-delivered, complete with any annotations they have made to the text. There is no indication if the other pulled titles also fall under the same deal, but it is likely.

Optima's Maemo-running OP5-E MID demoed on video, priced
We've already gotten a quick look of Optima's new OP5-E MID, but those really curious about the first non-Nokia Maemo device will no doubt want to check out this new video courtesy of techvideoblog.com, which offers nearly ten minutes of turning, tilting and attempts to decipher a Chinese-language interface. The Optima exec on hand also confirms a few details about the device, including the fact that it does indeed pack built-in 3G, and that it'll apparently sell for "around $500." iPhone creating more cash for Apple than widely believed?
Most Street observers are seriously underestimating the amount of money the iPhone is generating for Apple, claims Societe Generale analyst Vicent Rech. Rech notes that while a number of analysts are accounting for Apple's two-year amortization of iPhone revenues, they are often ignoring profitability trends. Current gross margin on the iPhone is believed to be 60 percent, nearly double the 33 percent for the rest of Apple's businesses.

TiVo wins $200m more from DISH in patent fight
TiVo on Friday won $200 million in extra damages from satellite TV provider DISH and its sibling EchoStar. The award comes after TiVo successfully argued that DISH and EchoStar were in contempt of an injuction that prevented the two from selling DVRs that allegedly infringed on TiVo's patents for its Time Warp feature.

Loopt betas "always-on" iPhone GPS service
Loopt, the location-based social networking application for the iPhone and other smartphones (and iPod touch users), is announcing that they will now be offering a GPS for iPhone (and assuming other phones) through AT&T. The Always-On Location Service, which will run in the background, will constantly update Loopt of your location and will eventually cost $3.99/month (currently 3 month free trial) and be billed by AT&T on your phone bill rather than through iTunes or the App Store.

PS3 outsells Xbox 360, Wii following price cuts
Sony's introduction of the slim PS3 and the resulting price cut have led it to a rare lead in game consoles in North America, weekly data for the end of August shows. While the new model itself wasn't on shelves for most of the August 23rd to 29th period covered by VGChartz, the outgoing 80GB and 160GB models registered 75,931 sales. The number is more than double the 37,167 Sony sold the week earlier and in a rare instance had Sony not only outsell the Xbox 360, which came next with 74,689 sales, but also the Wii's 74,245 units.

Samsung slips out 0.6in thick ST45 camera
Although most of its recent camera announcements were made last month, Samsung today slipped out a new point-and-shoot camera designed for thinness first. It shoots a common 12.2 megapixels but has an aluminum shell that measures just 0.63 inches thick that renders it more pocketable. Other traits are simple and revolve around a 3X lens, ISO 3,200 sensitivity and image stabilization, but it gets recent Samsung software features like auto-sorting albums, a self-portrait guide and face detection.

New study finds close to one quarter of Xbox 360s fail within two years
Sure, it's not exactly news to hear that the Xbox 360 is the most unreliable console of the big three, but just how unreliable is it? Now there's a point of contention. The good news for Microsoft, of sorts, is that a new study from SquareTrade found that just 23.7% of Xbox 360 consoles failed within the first two years of ownership, which is actually a fair bit better than some of the previous numbers that topped 50%. The study also found that 10% of PlayStation 3 users reported a system failure, compared to a mere 2.7% of Wii owners. TomTom's Car Kit for iPhone will be your co-pilot in October

Toshiba makes timid Blu-ray showing at IFA, still believes in other forms of HD distribution
Aside from the new JournE touch, the other main thrust at IFA's booth is Blu-ray -- at least, one would think. In reality, when we finally found the lone BDX2000, the LCD it was plugged into was off, while numerous DVD players and upscaling tech demos littered the surrounding booth area. Future Shop sells $330 X360 Elite with Halo 3, Wi-Fi
Canadian retailer Future Shop this week went beyond Microsoft's official Xbox price cuts by launching an even more aggressively-priced bundle for the game. First spotted earlier in the week and now online, the Elite Value Bundle gives the typical 120GB Xbox 360 Elite a copy of Halo 3 as well as the Wireless Network Adapter for Wi-Fi. iPod Event: Integrierte Kameras so gut wie sicher
So gut wie sicher scheint es inzwischen, dass die für nächsten Mittwoch erwarteten neuen iPod-Modelle mit einer integrierten Kamera ausgestattet sind. Bei einem Spaziergang über die heute in Berlin eröffnete IFA durften wir bei zwei Herstellern unterm Ladentisch bereits passende Hüllen mit Kameraaussparung bewundern. Erstaunlich offen zeigt sich diesbezüglich Hama: Dort gibt es bereits eine ganze Palette an Hüllen mit Kameraaussparung für die nächsten Nano- und Touch-Generationen zu sehen. Sonos gaining Twitter support
Sonos on Friday announced through a Twitter post that its CR200 touchscreen controller, Sonos CR for iPhone and Sonos CRs for Mac and PC will get the ability to post tweets on Twitter directly through a given device. There's more to starting a cable company than just pirating DirecTV
Blame it on the economy, lack of common sense, or lowered aspirations, but it seems like an awful lot of you guys think it's a good idea to re-sell DirecTV "on the sly," as they say in the business. Hell, this morning alone no less than two items have come across our desk to this effect -- and you know as well as we do that if both John Metzler, the owner and operator of Phoenix Communications and Pine River Cable in Michigan, is reselling premium digital channels, and if four unnamed Haysi, Virginia residents have also thought of it, then it's a growing concern. Video hands-on: Samsung's YP-M1 media player is Tegra-based but no Zune HD
An NVIDIA Tegra chipset pumping away at the heart of a portable media player is no guarantee of success. Samsung says OLED notebooks due in one year
Samsung's first deployment of OLED notebooks should occur in about a year, an executive from the company explains. Samsung's head of worldwide sales and marketing for computers, Kyu Uhm, revealed the information at this week's IFA expo in Berlin. "Samsung is the largest OLED screen manufacturer. ASUS on Friday announced it will soon add two notebooks to its multimedia N-series, including the 16-inch N61 and 17.3-inch N71. Apple springs UK iPod with camera cases leak
Two separate UK iPod case makers today effectively confirmed Apple’s next-gen iPod range will carry cameras, reinforcing months of expectation of the same.
UK case manufacturer Proporta has distributed a press release offering cases for the as-yet unannounced iPod nano. The manufacturer hasn’t yet released any images of the new range, presumably being under an NDA of some kind with Apple Inc. - but has confirmed the new models will feature cameras, or at the least it believes they will.
“The new Apple 5G iPod nano looks set to be a typically beautiful new product from the Apple stable, building on the already impressive 4G nano by adding a camera and improving the size of the screen,” the company said, announcing its new range.

A continuing problem with the optical drives in Mac notebooks is now preventing people from installing Snow Leopard, according to discussions on Apple's support forums. Samsung expecting OLED laptops in Q3 2010
It'd be about a year late according to an earlier roadmap, but Samsung at IFA this week proclaimed its intention to adopt OLED for its laptop lineup as soon as the screens are commercially available -- "probably sometime Q3 next year" said Kyu Uhm, head of Worldwide Sales and Marketing for the company's Computing Division. iPhone gains 10% web browsing use in August
Use of an iPhone to access the Web climbed c.10 per cent in August when compared to the previous month, and its share of total internet traffic has more than doubled since October last year, the latest NetApplications statistics inform.
iPhone’s accounted for 0.33 per cent of Web traffic last month, up from 0.30 per cent the month before and 0.14 per cent in October 2008, the figures reveal.
That’s one-third of the number of machines running Linux currently being used to access the Web; and is a higher figure than use of Java ME and Symbian devices to get online.

Make use of the Snow Leopard dock
I have always been intrigued by tools that have provided similar functions as the Dock to other operating systems. In the classic Mac OS, there was the control strip, and I even enjoyed the "quick launch" feature in Windows XP. I have enjoyed seeing new features and refinements added to it over the years. In Snow Leopard, Apple has added a few new features that may be useful to some people, but which can easily be overlooked if you use the Dock in the same way as you did with Leopard.

AT&T to bring MMS to iPhone Sept. 25th [U]
(Updated with statement on tethering) AT&T this afternoon finally established a firm date for when it would add MMS support to iPhones on its network. The carrier will switch on the feature as of September 25th through a software upgrade for iPhone 3G and 3GS owners. Adding the feature will let those running iPhone 3.0 or later firmware send photos, videos and general data like contact cards to any MMS-aware phone.

T-Mobile launches first prepaid Android phone
T-Mobile in the UK will soon release its third Android-powered handset, though it will be the first to be made by Huawei rather than HTC and also the first anywhere to be offered on a pay-as-you-go pricing scheme. Toshiba bows its first Blu-ray player, notebook
Toshiba picked IFA to make its first real entrance into Blu-ray following last year's exit from HD DVD with both its first dedicated movie player and a notebook to match. The BDX2000 catches up with full BD-Live support for movies with Internet features on an Ethernet connection and an SD card slot for playing the user's own content, including H.264 (AVCHD) videos. A flip-down front door is rare in the breed and keeps the design uncluttered either mid-movie or when it's not in use.

iPhone owner catches three criminals using GPS tracking
The iPhoneís GPS system has reportedly assisted yet another individual attempting to find and catch thieves, according to Mashable.com. An unidentified person living in Shadyside, PA, was held at gunpoint by two men demanding the victim's wallet, PIN numbers and iPhone. The robbed individual than used his computer and the iPhoneís GPS technology to locate the thieves and helped provide police with information necessary to capture the suspects.

LG's turn at IFA saw it roll out two new desktop LCDs as well as supply early details of digital photo frames. The W63 series (shown at top) is made for gaming first and adds a number of touches just for PC or console games. Microsoft granted stay on Word sales ban
The US federal Court of Appeals today granted Microsoft a temporary stay on an injunction that would have banned sales of Word until the conclusion of an appeal against the successful lawsuit filed by Canadian firm i4i. Mozilla Firefox bald mit Flash-Versionscheck
In zukünftigen Releases von Firefox wird automatisch überprüft, ob das installierte Flash-Plugin noch aktuell ist. Aufgefallen war dies einem Tester der Beta-Version, die ihn unter Snow Leopard darauf hinwies, dass sein Flash-Plugin veraltet sei.
Diese Überprüfung soll es laut Mozilla in einer der nächsten Firefox-Versionen auf allen Systemen geben und wird aktuell noch getestet.

You know what's absolutely useless? A video of Wipeout HD being played in 3D, with some schmuck wearing 3D glasses and babbling on about how much fun he's having. Well, that schmuck is this Engadget editor, the video can be found after the break, and we've gotta say: we loved it. Especially for something like Wipeout HD, whose neon-infused tracks make for an almost too convenient example of rapidly approaching vanishing points, we'd say 3D could really be a quasi-"killer app" for consoles going forward -- especially if those fancy new motion controllers don't catch on for Microsoft and Sony. Bericht: Cisco und EMC planen Joint Venture
Cisco Systems und EMC planen laut einem Bericht des Wall Street Journal (WSJ) ein Gemeinschaftsunternehmen für Technologie-Dienstleistungen. Den Quellen des WSJ zufolge richtet sich das Joint Venture mit dem Codenamen "Alpine" an Großunternehmen. Ziel sei es, Server und Netzwerkausrüstung von Cisco und Storage-Geräte von EMC in Rechenzentren zu kombinieren.

iPhone SDK Compatibility Update 1.0 erschienen
Haben Entwickler das iPhone SDK unter Mac OS X 10.5 installiert und updaten auf Mac OS X 10.6, ohne zuvor die Festplatte zu formatieren, kann es laut einem Support-Dokument von Apple zu Problemen kommen. Rätselhaftes Problem mit MacBook Pro: EFI-Update und SATA-Festplatten
Schon seit ein paar Monaten beschäftigt die Gemeinde der MacBook-Pro-Besitzer ein merkwürdiges Problem mit nachgerüsteten SATA-Festplatten. Ein EFI-Update aus dem Juni dieses Jahres ermöglichte zwar die Nutzung von Laufwerken mit mehr als 1,5 Gb/s Transferrate, schloss jedoch gleichzeitig Schwierigkeiten mit Festplatten, die nicht explizit von Apple empfohlen werden, nicht aus. We couldn't get a handle on what at first seemed so "bloated" about the T-Mobile Pulse until we held it up to the iPhone: this is the first production Android phone to get a "regular" 3.5-inch screen, instead of the rather narrow 3.2-inchers on HTC's trio of Android devices. Sure, it's the same resolution, but we really feel the breathing room. Overall we'd say the Pulse lacks a little something something up against the polished design of the HTC Hero hardware or the iPhone 3G, but it's still plenty alluring -- especially considering that this is being positioned as a pay-as-you-go device. Snow Leopard 10.6.1 - Erstes Update erreicht die Entwickler

Wie MacBidouille mit Verweis auf zwei umfangreiche Diskussionen in Apples Support-Forum berichtet, gibt es eine auffällig hohe Ausfallrate von Time Capsules nach einem Zeitraum von 17 bis 19 Monaten. Mal wieder: Gerüchte um Apple-Klingeltöne
Während wir hierzulande nun schon seit zwei Jahren auf iTunes-Klingeltöne warten (warten wir wirklich?), soll Apple auf dem Special Event nächste Woche den Verkauf "fertiger Klingeltöne" über iTunes Store ankündigen.
Die seither nur in den USA über iTunes vertriebenen Klingeltöne muss man sich immer noch selbst zusammenschneiden: man kauft also eine frei wählbare, zeitlich begrenzte Passage aus einem Song. Zukünftig würde - wenn die CNET-Gerüchte sich bewahrheiten - der iTunes Store ausgewählte Songpassagen als fertig vorbereitete Klingeltöne anbieten.
Wie gut ein solches Feature angenommen wird entscheidet wohl einzig und allein der Preis der angebotenen Audioschnipsel. Der Renner dürfte es jedenfalls nicht werden, dafür ist das Klingeltonthema wohl schon zu ausgelutscht. Wir freuen uns also weiter in erster Linie auf neue iPod-Modelle.

Laut einer Studie von ABI Research gibt der durchschnittliche Besitzer eines Mobiltelefons in den USA über dessen gesamte Nutzungsdauer hinweg 60 Dollar für Zubehör aus. Zusammengenommen würde dies für 2009 ein Marktvolumen von 63 Mrd. Dollar ergeben. Am häufigsten werden Telefone mit Ladegeräten aufgewertet (z. B. fürs Auto), gefolgt von Hüllen, Akkus und Speicherkarten. Etwas seltener wird zu Freisprechanlagen oder Headsets gegriffen. Hierbei ist Demographie ein Kriterium: Konsumenten unter 40 Lebensjahren erwerben deutlich häufiger Akkus, Verbindungskabeln oder Hüllen als ältere Nutzer. Die Erhebung basiert auf der Befragung von 1.000 volljährigen Handynutzern im Juli 2009.

AT&T schedules MMS for September 25th, tethering? "Ask us later"
AT&T's network, which is crumbling under the pressure of the high iPhone traffic seems to be the reason why we haven't seen MMS and tethering. Should AT&T have noticed about two years ago that iPhone traffic was starting to tax their network? Should they have waited until now to roll out some upgrades? That's what they are claiming as the reasons for holding back MMS and tethering.
AT&T said today that MMS messaging, which has been a glaring omission on the iPhone 3G and new 3GS, will arrive on Sept. 25. It's not quite the "late summer" launch that we were told about, is it?

Snow Leopard 10.6.1 (10B503) seed build notes posted
The 10.6.1 build 10B503 notes were posted today by World of Apple. Along with the following improvements, the build includes an updated version (MAC 10,0,32,18) of Adobe's Flash Player which was a few revs behind when released last week. Snow Leopard 10.6.1 (10B503) seed build notes posted
The 10.6.1 build 10B503 notes were posted today by World of Apple. Along with the following improvements, the build includes an updated version (MAC 10,0,32,18) of Adobe's Flash Player which was a few revs behind when released last week. The build is a significant step up from Snow Leopard GM 10A432 and addresses a variety of issues but is under 72MB in size. From the seed notes:

Nokia N900 now up for $649 preorder in the US of A
Nokia fans know the drill -- if you happen to live in the vicinity of the New York or Chicago flagship stores, you're almost certainly better off holding out and camping in front of the store as the launch date draws near -- but now that they're being taken, the rest of the States might strongly consider filing an preorder with Nokia USA's official online store if they want an N900 as soon as humanly possible. That's a good deal less than the US equivalent of $860 currently being asked by the company's German and Italian outposts, so we guess we should be thankful -- provided, of course, that the US launch isn't delayed

LG W63 enters gaming monitor arena, claims to be the best
You can't exactly accuse LG of lacking audacity -- the company that today unveiled the eccentric Color Pop displays has also updated its consumer monitor line with a gamer-centric Full HD entry that has everything but humility. Following the Airport Express, now the Time Capsule ?
You all probably remember the problems that thousands of owners met with the first generation of the Airport Express. Between the thirteenth and twenty-fouth month, a very large quantity of these airpots gave up the ghost. The fault was in the power block that prematurely died.
Although we do not wish this to start again, many people have stated on the Apple forums (here and here) to have encountered a similar problem with their Time Capsule. It seems here that the breakdowns occur after 17 to 18 months of operation.
If you encountered such a problem, feel free to state this on the forums. Of course, if this proves to be the start of a new epidemic, we will investigate to find a way of repairing the power block since Apple is more than likely to turn a deaf ear

Mac OS X 10.6.1; it has already started...
According to AppleInsider, Apple sent at the beginning of week to certain developers the first beta of the first update of Snow Leopard. We do not know what it fixes, but the small annoyances of Snow Leopard are still rather numerous so that there is an embarrassingly large choice.
However it is surprising that only a restricted group of developers was entitled to this update. Apple probably is hiding certain aspects or certain improvements that were not ready for the official launch. It would not be surprising if it is released at the time the official release of Windows 7, thus giving a bit of news coverage to Apple.

PS3 firmware 3.0 locking out knock-off controllers?
Well, here's a bit of a curious situation. As Joystiq reports, it wasn't long after the PS3 firmware 3.0 went live that the first reports of problems started cropping up, with one particularly nagging issue being that some controllers (specifically the CECHZC2H Ceramic White DualShock3) seemed to be locked out of the console once the update was installed. After hashing it out a bit on the official PlayStation3 forum, however, users apparently determined that the controllers in question were in fact knock-offs and not official Sony product, which raises some different but just as interesting q
