AT&T yanks BlackBerry Bold visual voicemail software update
Hope you Bold owners out there managed to snag AT&T's BlackBerry Bold visual voicemail software update while it lasted, because an internal memo leaked to BGR says it's been pulled due to compatibility problems with "network enhancements being deployed." That sounds to us like there's an issue with either those 850MHz 3G rollouts or whatever black magic Ma Bell's doing to get iPhone MMS up and running, but either way, it's one more fire for AT&T's engineers to pu

FujiFilm Real 3D camera given a video hands-on by fake 3D journalists
The first thing you notice about FujiFilm's €499 Real 3D W1 camera is its size. It's big -- big in the way that bloggers see main stream media journalists as big. And the industrial design is straight-up Cold War. Still, it delivers 3D without special glasses and does so with surprisingly realistic detail -- it really does work. Yeah, you have to position yourself oh so carefully just in front of FujiFilm's €349 FinePix 3D Viewer or printed photos courtesy of a FujiFilm web service, but the novelty might be worthwhile for those with money to burn. Sony hedges on plans for PS3 update to enable 3D gaming on old titles
It's not a straight up rebuttal, but apparently Sony corporate is singing a different tune than what we heard from a Sony rep on the floor of IFA (multiple times) the other day: that all existing PS3 games would be playable in 3D after the software update next year. According to Sony, it's "conducting a technological investigation" as to the possibility of this, but claims there's "no plan for the market launch of this at this time." It makes sense that many titles -- especially ones designed with widely divergent game engines -- would be incompatible with a simple software update, but details are slim on how Sony is adding this function to its own gam

IFA: Hama zeigt Hüllen für iPod touch 3G, nano 5G
Nicht die Füllung, aber immerhin die Hülle gibt es auf der IFA zu sehen: Engadget hat Fotos von iPod-Hüllen des Zubehörherstellers Hama, die sich mit Gerüchten um eine eingebaute Kamera decken. Beide Hüllen bieten eine Aussparung für die Kamera, einmal am Rand (nano) und einmal in der Mitte (touch).

Adobe issues fresh Snow Leopard CS3 compatibility notes
Adobe has issued a revised Creative Suite 3 FAQ (PDF) in which the company details the results of its application testing and compatibility with Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard.
Adobe’s John Nack published this new information yesterday, detailing a couple of major points taken from the new company document.

It looks like the Snow Leopard transition is moving along pretty well, if our Google Analytics are any indication. A week after release, over 55% of you are using Snow Leopard, including PowerPC users who don't have the option. Olympus E-P1 meets 50-200mm SWD lens monstrosity, hilarity ensues
We've already seen plenty of the Olympus E-P1, but when we dropped by Olympus' booth today at IFA we just couldn't resist slapping on the biggest lens they had, courtesy of the micro four thirds to standard four thirds adapter, and shooting a bit of dramatic show floor footage. The verdict? It's totally impractical, especially because there's no autofocus during video with certain lenses, meaning we're stuck working the manual focus ring, D90-style. Still, we didn't expect anything different, and our short film entitled entitled "People Wandering Around, Totally Out of Focus" really made the effort worth while. Oh, and for our money? AT&T? Was haben die mit iPhone-Anwendungen zu tun? In diesem Fall sehr viel und natürlich läuft Loopt nicht wirklich im Hintergrund auf dem iPhone. Nokia X6 video hands-on: proof that capacitive touchscreens are better
While Nokia wouldn't invite us to Nokia World this year, we were fortunate enough to discover a pair of its new X6 handsets on the IFA floor here in Berlin. On hand were two engineering prototypes, one of which was peeling away from its plastic shell while the other seemed less responsive to our finger-taps than the other. Boston prep school nixes all the books in its library, replaces them with 18 e-readers
We love looking to the future here at Engadget. And while real, paper books hold a special place in our heart, we're fairly certain no one will accuse us of being Luddites for scoffing at a recent development at a Boston prep school. James Tracy, the headmaster of Cushing Academy, says that he sees books as an "outdated technology," and to that end, he's taken the drastic and expensive step of ridding the school's library of every single one of its books. LG BL20 hands-on: putting the 'slider' back in 'Chocolate'
For all its good looks and lickable icons, the BL40 hardly feels like a "Chocolate" phone -- abandoning the featurephone functionality and slider form factors that are usually associated with the moniker. Mit der "Mediola" genannten Technik lassen sich nicht nur Stereoanlagen, Fernsehgeräte und DVD-Player per Handy fernsteuern, sondern auch die Beleuchtung, Rollläden, Überwachungskameras oder die Gartenbewässerung. Das klappt Telefunken zufolge auch mit älteren Geräten.

Loopt betas "always-on" iPhone GPS service
Loopt, the location-based social networking application for the iPhone and other smartphones (and iPod touch users), is announcing that they will now be offering a GPS for iPhone (and assuming other phones) through AT&T. The Always-On Location Service, which won't run on the iPhone, will constantly update Loopt of your location and will eventually cost $3.99/month (currently 3 month free trial) and be billed by AT&T on your phone bill rather than through iTunes or the App Store.
This is an interesting development for a number of reasons. Firstly, it bypasses the iPhone entirely. It doesn't use GPS, it uses AT&T's cell location data to triangulate your location (like A-GPS).

Gameloft zeigt iPhone-Beat'em-Up Blades of Fury
Ein Genre, dass auf dem iPhone noch unterrepräsentiert ist, sind Prügelspiele. Gameloft hat sich mit Blades of Fury gleich ein ganz großes Vorbild genommen: Soul Calibur/Edge. Gesteuert wird mit einem virtuellen Analogstick, auf der anderen Bildschirmseite liegen die Feuerknöpfe. iPhone-kompatible Soundsysteme von Philips
Philips hat zwei neue iPhone-kompatible, also speziell gegen Mobilfunkstrahlung abgeschirmte Soundsysteme vorgestellt. Interessant finden wir vor allem das größere von beiden mit Namen SBD8100 Revolution. Sowohl am Netz wie auch batteriebetrieben nutzbar, bringt das hübsche Gerät ein nettes Gimmick: Das angedockte iPhone lässt sich per Fernbedienung ins Querformat und wieder zurück drehen.

Sony hat auf zur IFA ein neues und sehr exklusives Notebook präsentiert, das vor allem mit seinem Gewicht punkten soll. Mit 690 Gramm soll es weit unter jedem herkömmlichen Notebook liegen, was vor allem dem Material – Carbon – zu verdanken ist. Günstig wird dies dann aber nicht.

Neue Philips-Soundsysteme für iPod und iPhone
Der Elektronikkonzern Philips hat uns zwar schon die eine oder andere Pleite beschert, weiß andererseits aber auch wieder durch gute Konzepte und hervorragendes Design zu bestechen. Auf der Berliner IFA hat Philips nun zwei kompakte Soundsysteme für den iPod und das iPhone vorgestellt, die wir - vorbehaltlich eines ausführlichen Tests - in der positiven Kategorie ablegen.
Das größere von beiden nennt sich SBD8100 Revolution und kann sowohl per Netzteil zu Hause wie auch mit einer Ladung Batterien unterwegs betrieben werden. Optisch sehr ansprechend finden sich links und rechts am Gerät als Tragegriff nutzbare Aluminiumbügel, in der Mitte sitzt inmitten eines blauen Leuchtkreises das Dock, welches - hier kommt der Kick - sich per Knopfdruck um 90 Grad drehen lässt. Die BörseGo AG hat eine iPhone-optimierte Web-Anwendung vorgestellt. Diese soll es dem mobilen Anwender gestatten, Aktienkurse in Echtzeit zu erleben. Zusätzlich werden die Kurse und Charts einzelner Werte in automatisch aktualisierender Darstellung, angezeigt. Toshiba Announces its First Blu-ray Player
It did not take a long time between the official announcement from Toshiba to support Blu-ray format and the release of its first standalone player:
The BDX2000 is a well packed product, offering 1080p 24 and compatible with BD 2.0. It is aggressively prices around 250 USD. Of course, one could get a PS3 Slim for 50 USD more, but not every customer would consider a game station as its BD player. As expected too, with Christmas only couple of months ahead, prices of BD players should massively drop and mid-range models should be soon around 200 €.

Adobe Wants Snow Leopard Users to Update their Flash Player
For an unknown reason, Snow Leopard installs be default an old version of Flash, recently updated due to security issues. If one could have thought it was driven by compatibility issues, it is not in reality. Indeed, Adobe invites all SL users to download and install the last version, compatible with SL: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/
We did not experience any issues so far with tis new version.

Nokia sells 2m N97 smartphones in three months
Nokia has revealed that it has sold two million of its flagship N97 smartphone since it went on sale in June. The company claims the numbers have "surpassed expectations" and that the tally beat the record for its previous best-selling smartphone, the long-serving N95. The company added that it has sold a total 10 million touchscreen phones in 10 months, the remaining 8 million of which were the older, less expensive 5800 XpressMusic.

Motorola staff profiles spoil Win Mobile 7 beta, features
While Windows Mobile 6.5 is just around the corner, a series of LinkedIn profiles (one), two, three) of a number of Motorola employees reveal Windows Mobile 7 has been in development for a number of years, as well as a number of features of the beta version of the new OS. Chief among them will be handwriting recognition, and there will be support for NVIDIA's Tegra (APX 2500) platform. The OS will also have native support for MEMS sensors, including an accelerometer and compass.
