Apple begins testing Mac OS X 10.6.1 update

Just days after the operating system's launch, Apple has already begun a closed test of the first major update to Snow Leopard, according to anonymous sources. Mac OS X 10.6.1 allegedly became available to a small number of developers on Monday, specifically groups of coders invited by Apple. Distribution to all members of the Apple Developer Connection could begin within a week or two, if historical trends serve as a precedent.

The X120 is Samsung's first system to use an Intel CULV chip and runs on a new dual-core, 1.3GHz Pentium SU4100 whose 10W power draw lets the system run for up to nine hours on a charge, even with a small four-cell battery. O2 data outages plague UK iPhone owners

UK carrier O2 has once again encountered severe data interruptions, significantly impacting iPhone owners, multiple sources say. The most recent outages began during the region's Bank Holiday weekend, and O2 has confirmed a problem that "lasted for around two hours on Saturday." Bundesforschungsministerin Annette Schavan und Bundesinnenminister Wolfgang Schäuble (beide CDU) haben ein "Arbeitsprogramm zur IT-Sicherheitsforschung" vorgelegt. Ein Schwerpunkt der ersten Förderrunde ist das Thema "Sicherheit in unsicheren Umgebungen". Da eine Absicherung großer IKT-Umgebungen de facto nicht möglich sei, müsse die Sicherheit von einzelnen IKT-Systemen auch in unsicheren Umgebungen gewährleistet sein, hieß es. Schließlich hingen vom zuverlässigen Funktionieren der IKT weite Bereiche des gesellschaftlichen und wirtschaftlichen Lebens ab.

Adobe cites additional Snow Leopard problems

Adobe has spotted yet more compatibility problems created in transitioning its software to Snow Leopard, according to the company's principal product manager, John Nack. In particular, Photoshop is currently said to crash when switching to the Menlo font; the only solution at present is to avoid using the font entirely. LG to launch three Windows Mobile phones soon

Snow Leopard using older version of Flash?

According to UK security vendor Sophos, the shipping version of Flash in Snow Leopard (10.0.23.1) isn't the most recent.  In fact, it is a few months old and likely would have installed over a newer version had you kept up with Flash updates. Sophos being a security vendor, reccomends Snow Leopard users to update to the latest version of Flash, lest they be vulnerable to the latest security attacks aimed at Flash users.   To find out what version of Flash you are using, head to Adobe's Version tester here.

Sagemore Apple Store hit in second robbery

The Sagemore Apple Store in Marlton, New Jersey has become the victim of a second robbery in the space of just over four months, say reports. In Thursday's incident, captured on video, five men attacked the store shortly after 2AM, breaking through a glass facade with a large rock. Samsung just debuted its new X Series line, a trio of fairly thin big brothers to the new netbooks Samsung is also launching today. The X420 (14-inch), X520 (14.6-inch) and X120 (11.6-inch, pictured) all hover around 0.95-inches thick, and range from 3 ounces to 4.4 pounds in weight. Samsung is touting its new design language for the laptops, though at a glance it doesn't seem too special -- the scratch-resistant UV coating for the glossy finish is a nice touch, though. Under the hood we're a little short on details, but an unannounced dual-core Intel CULV processor makes an appearance somewhere in there. According to UK security vendor, Sophos, the shipping version of Flash in Snow Leopard isn't the most recent.  In fact, it is a few months old and likely would have installed over a newer version had you kept up with Flash updates. Hoo boy are we stoked on this one. Panasonic has really shown what micro four thirds is all about, with the retro good looks and strong performance of the new Lumix DMC-GF1. The camera is certainly a bit larger and heavier than it looks from a distance, but housed within the slightly oversized shell are some pretty good optics and some snappy performance. You can't replicate the satisfying "kerklunk" of a real DSLR shutter, but the GF1 is responsive and clicky enough to give off a much better vibe than the standard camera in this size range. Another Snow Leopard Tip: Option-Click Sound menu and get input/output options

Windows Mobile 6.5 On october 6th

It was expected for months if not years from Microsoft, the new version of Windows dedicated to mobile phone, Windows Mobile 6.5 (re-baptized Windows Phone) will be available on october 6th. This version will complement the previous one released in february 2007 and will bring support for touch screen, improve the integrate internet browser, including a Flash Lite engine, but will also bring Outlook and Office Mobile. As one could have expected it, Microsoft will also offer services similar to those available on the iPhone from Apple. So, those mobile phones running on Windows Phone will feature a new service call "My Phone" will allow synchronization and backup of data stored on the device (for free apparently). The AppStore will be named Windows MarketPlace. Unlike Apple with its iPhone OS, improved over time for all release models so far, if you own a mobile phone running Windows Mobile 6.0 you apparently will NOt be able to update to 6.5, you will need to purchase a new handheld.

Toshiba Announced a 2.5" HD with 640 GB of Storage Space

Toshiba unveiled new series of 2.5" HDs with storage capacity toping at 640 GB, based on 2 discs of 320 GB each. The rotation speed will be set to 5400 rpm, and all drives will offer 8 MB of cache in a 9.5 mm enclosure compatible with all SATA-based Apple MacBook models. If they might be slightly slower than products from competitors spinning at 7200 rpm, Toshiba models are known for being almost silent and release almost no heat.

Hidden Preferences in Quick Time X

Quick Time X is one of the new feature of Snow Leopard. It is faster and more reactive than the previous version, especially when running it in 64-bits mode. However, we were surprised by the lack of new features/functions released with QT X. Most advanced functions found previously in QuickTime Player have simply disappeared (copy/paste, track extraction, etc.). In addition, one can not really easily set the application the way we would like to use it. We know that Apple is used to improve new service/application over time, so let's be patient, future releases might unveil new functions and power.  While waiting for such improvement, you can customize a bit your new toy, thanks to the following command line to be entered in the terminal: No rounded corners for windows:defaults write com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX MGCinematicWindowDebugForceNoRoundedCorners 1 Never display the control bar, function activated when the mouse icon leaves the playing windows:

Indev Software has released Mail Act-On 2.1, an update to its organization and management tool for Apple’s Mail application. Image leaks show upcoming Leica M9 and X1 cameras

Several image leaks allegedly show upcoming Leica cameras, the X1 and M9, according to Leica Rumors. Unconfirmed specs point to a full-frame 18.2 megapixel sensor on the M9, up from the current 10 megapixel component. Video: Sony confirms it's 'bringing home 3D' starting in 2010

As it turns out, yesterday's report was spot-on. Sony today announced that it is bringing the experience of looking absolutely ridiculous in 3D glasses home to the living room. The initiative is "starting in 2010" and will expand through BRAVIA LCD HDTVs, VAIO machines, PlayStation 3, and Blu-ray discs and not in the press release, but we clearly see a CyberShot digital camera in the promotional video (look out, Fujifilm). Samsung outs 2TB desktop, 640GB mobile USB drives

Samsung this evening took advantage of advances in hard drives in the past few weeks to upgrade its external hard drives. The S3 Station desktop drive now jumps to 2TB (from 1.5TB) while the S2 Portable climbs from 500GB to 640GB.
