US Army wants 2.3 gigapixel camera for aerial surveillance
DARPA may have already gone to the trouble of building a 1.8 gigapixel camera as part of its ARGUS-IS project (pictured above), but it looks like the US Army is setting its sights a little higher, and it's now soliciting proposals for a 2.3 gigapixel camera that would be used for some super-wide aerial surveillance. While obviously still quite a ways from becoming reality, the Army hopes the system will be both smaller and lighter than previous systems, work in the infrared range to boot, and capture images at a rate of two frames per second. Wer ein Freund von iPhoto und von einfachen Lösungen ist, wird das neue iPhoto-Plugin “Impression” von Blue Crowbar lieben. Mit Impression lassen sich ganz bequem über das Export-Menü Wasserzeichen hinzufügen.

Apple veröffentlicht ARD-Client 3.3.1
Der Apple Remote Desktop Client 3.3.1 "behebt mehrere Probleme mit der allgemeinen Zuverlässigkeit und Sicherheit." Das Update ist rund 5 Megabyte groß und erfordert keinen Neustart. MS fights to avoid 99-cent Win Mobile apps
Microsoft at its first WinMoDevCamp in Seattle made clear it wants a different philosophy towards mobile app pricing than Apple. Apple, Cisco and Microsoft have won an appeals court ruling, limiting potential patent damages for products shipped outside the US, says Bloomberg. OCZ intros Zee USB 2.0 flash drive
Notebook, RAM and flash memory maker OCZ recently introduced its Zee USB 2.0 flash drive. OCZ, which makes solid state drive upgrade kits for notebook PCs, hasn't offered a simple USB thumb drive before. The drives are minimalist in their design, and OCZ is likewise being modest and isn't releasing their peformance specs, though does say the drives are capable of mainstream speeds.

Preparing for Snow Leopard: Early release? Early installation?
Official announcements have mentioned a September release date for Snow Leopard, but rumor has it we could see it arrive as soon as August 28th (1, 2). In the past when Apple has given a month or season timeframe for a product release they have pushed it back as far as possible in that window, but with Snow Leopard in development for so long perhaps they have finished things up sooner than expected. Recently people have spotted the availability of Snow Leopard in a "MacBox Set" on the Apple Store, which seemed to be a slip by Apple but indicates the release is just around the corner.

Analyst calls for new Apple TV within months
Apple will probably launch a new Apple TV within the next several months, argues Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. In July's Q3 results call, COO Tim Cook stated that Apple would "continue to invest" in the Apple TV. The company could also have strong incentive to build a new set-top, says Munster, if it decides to offer a subscription service for iTunes video.

EA, Ubisoft execs applaud PS3 price cut, also like things that are good
Well, this one doesn't exactly come out of left field, but it looks like gaming industry execs are starting to sing a decidedly different tune now that Sony has finally cut the price of the PS3. Nintendo admits asking Apple to remove DS simulator
Nintendo on Thursday acknowledged its role in the removal of a DS simulator app, DS DoubleSys, from the App Store. The app was not licensed or approved by Nintendo, although it simulates the DS interface with similar sounds and menus. Nintendo spokesman Charlie Scibetta told CNET News the company notified Apple that the app was violating intellectual property rights.

Piratenpartei und Grüne kooperieren bei der Thüringer Landtagswahl
Die Piratenpartei und die Grünen kooperieren zur Landtagswahl am 30. August in Thüringen. Beide Parteien haben ein Papier (PDF) herausgegeben, das die gemeinsamen Ziele beschreibt: Ein Informationsfreiheitsgesetz soll den Datenschutz stärken. Verwaltungen und Schulen sollen vermehrt freie Software einsetzen. Außerdem fordern beide Parteien Medienunterricht ab der fünften Klasse und eine Abschaffung jeglicher Art von Bildungsgebühren. Dazu gehöre auch die Lernmittelfreiheit.

Kunst: iPhone statt Leinwand und Pinsel
Es ist nicht das erste Mal, dass ein mit dem iPhone-Programm Brushes gezeichnetes Bild durch die Presse geht, bereits im Mai hat es der Künstler Jorge Colombo damit bereits auf den Titel des New Yorker geschafft. Smartphones climb to 28% of US cellphones
Smartphones now represent more than a quarter of all cellphones sold in the US, the NPD Group has revealed in findings on Wednesday. Shipments of the devices jumped by almost half, or 47 percent, year over year in to where they represented 28 percent of all phones in the country this spring. The shift helped push the average price of a phone up $4 to $87.

Plants vs. Zombies für das iPhone angekündigt
PopCap Games ist eine Firma, deren schädigende Wirkung auf die Volkswirtschaften dieser Welt erst noch untersucht werden muss. Nokia N97 mini pops in the FCC, not so much mini-er than the N97
It's still hard to believe that Nokia's already upstaging the N97 with the N97 mini just two months after the big guy shipped, but here we are, staring at the FCC documentation. There's not much to go on here besides this label-location drawing, which is marked with a 1:1 scale -- allowing us to set our regular N97 down next to it and show you just how little Nokia achieved with all that development money. GTA-Klon Gangstar jetzt im App Store
Das Warten auf den Gameloft-Titel Gangstar hat ein Ende. Bereits Anfang Juli angekündigt, ist der in 3D umgesetzte GTA-Ableger jetzt für 5,49 Euro im App Store erhältlich. Das Spiel ist kompatibel mit dem iPod touch und dem iPhone ab Systemversion 2.2.1 und belegt 173 MB Speicher. iPhone 3GS unterstützt hardwareseitig angeblich 1080p-Video
Momentan machen Berichte die Runde, wonach das iPhone 3GS angeblich sogar 1080p-Video unterstützt, Apple dies aber softwareseitig nicht erlaubt. Auf einer chinesischen Seite zeigt ein Benutzer, dass bei einer Auflösung von 1980x1080 Pixel noch immer nahezu ruckelfreie Wiedergabe möglich ist. HP Mini 1000 hacked into touchscreen tablet
As all you compulsive modders and gadget freaks know, there aren't too many devices that a well-applied touchscreen kit won't make even better. And while there's nothing really earth shattering about a homebrew HP Mini 1000 tablet, we don't see too many of them. As with many a similar hack, things are pretty straightforward: remove the keyboard, cram in some components (actually, the term this guy uses is "squeeze") and then fit the shell back together. Apple reconsidering C64 Emulator for iPhone?
Apple could be reconsidering allowing the C64 Emulator app onto the App Store, following its rejection in June. Always Innovating sure made good on the promise of removable tablet embedded in a netbook form factor and price -- we've gone from hardly believable renders in March to a now-shipping $400 ($300 without the base) product as of now. iPhone 3GS secretly capable of 1080p video?
Despite Apple's claims to the contrary, a test by a forum member at Weiphone suggests the iPhone 3GS may already have enough performance to smoothly play full HD video. By manually copying over videos using file transfer apps on a computer and the iPhone, the community member says he could play up to a 1080p (1920x1080) clip at 30 frames per second at up to a 35Mbps without any lag or stuttering.

The last study conducted by NPD and related to physical and online music sales indicates that Apple own 69% of the online market in USA, leaving Amazon on the second position with only 8%. When one considers both physical and online markets, Apple iTunes is the channel used for 25% of sales. This is huge and demonstrates that at least in USA online music store is quickly becoming a major distribution channel.It also shows that Music Majors did not succeed in breaking Apple iTunes success, and dropping DRM did not help other online stores to effectively compete with the huge number of iPod owners who will preferentially use iTunes for purchasing music tracks online.

Bluetooth Update for Broadcom Chips-based Hardware Models

10x Blu-ray Burner from Buffalo
The well known burner manufacturer Buffalo announced a new Blu-ray-dedicated device, aka BR-H1016.
Based on a model from LG, this new burner from Buffalo is able to reach 10x BD burning speed for the SATA interface model with high-quality 6x certified BD media. The model available with a USB2.0 interface will be limited by default to 8x burning speed to prevent writing errors. It should be price around 300 Euro for the SATA model.

Erste Strafanzeige wegen Cyberbullying
Im amerikanischen Bundesstaat Missouri ist jetzt erstmals eine Person wegen "Cyberbullying" als Straftat angeklagt worden. Braidwood-Support für „Intel 5 series“ gestorben?
Mit den neuen Intel-Chipsätzen der „5 series“ wollte der Branchenführer auch die bereits unter dem Codenamen „Braidwood“ bekannte Technologie einführen. Warum Monate oder Jahre in das mühselige Studium von Xcode und der iPhone SDK investieren, wenn man auch in fünf Minuten zu seiner eigenen App kommen kann? Bereits zur Meldung der offiziellen SLI-Unterstützung von Nvidia für den neuen P55-Chipsatz von Intel haben wir angemerkt, dass eben dieser neue Chipsatz und seine Prozessoren maximal 16 Lanes für Grafikkarten bereitstellen. Snow Leopard: Keine Sorgen um 64 Bit-Unterstützung
Für Mac OS X 10.6. hat Apple alle Bestandteile 64-Bit-fähig gemacht - damit ist es zum Beispiel Programmen möglich, mehr als vier Gigabyte Speicher zu adressieren. Apple has shipped Hard Drive Firmware Update 2.0, software which addresses issues encountered with some MacBook Pro hard drives.
A few MacBook Pro owners had been complaining of experiencing brief system freezes and unusual hard drive bleeping noises.
The company also introduced Bluetooth Firmware Update 2.0.1, offering bug fixes and better compatibility with the Apple Wireless Mighty Mouse and Wireless Keyboard. This software’s meant for all Macs with Bluetooth based on the Broadcom chipset, so may not show as available in every Mac’s Software Update

Former Palm boss spurned Jobs non-employee poaching deal?
Former Palm CEO, Ed Colligan, has confirmed he spurned Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, when the latter proposed both refrain from hiring each other’s employees.
Colligan had the conversation with Jobs in August 2007, Bloomberg reports. He refused the request, saying: “Your proposal that we agree that neither company will hire the other’s employees, regardless of the individual’s desires, is not only wrong, it is likely illegal.”
The conversation took place two months after Apple’s introduction of the iPhone, shortly after Palm hired former Apple exec, Jon Rubinstein (now Palm CEO), to aid development new smartphones.

Ah, the cruelty of rapid refresh cycles. It was only six months ago that the well reviewed CX1 hit the scene, but already Ricoh is trotting out its replacement in the form of the CX2. You needn't fret though, as the new shooter retains its predecessor's winning features while adding a few goodies of its own. The zoom has gone from 7.1x to 10.7x, taking it comfortably into the superzoom category, continuous shooting gets upgraded from 4 to 5 fps, and face detection and AF have been enhanced. C64 kommt wohl doch für iPhone
Ob Phil Schiller oder wer sich sonst derzeit bei Apple für den App Store zuständig fühlt, eine Checkliste führen? iPhone-Entwicklerfirma Manomio hat nun endlich mit einem "Senior Director" bei Apple Kontakt, wie die Firma in einem Tweet bekannt gibt. Es geht um den C64-Emulator, der zweimal abgelehnt wurde, obwohl sich die Firma im Vorfeld um alle notwendigen Rechte kümmerte. iPhone 3GS: Weniger Defekte als beim Palm Pre
Die Marktforscher von ChangeWave Research haben die Rückgabequote von Palm Pres und dem iPhone 3GS ermittelt . Während 11 Prozent der Palm-Pre-Besitzer ihr Erstgerät wegen eines Defekts zurückgeben mussten, lag die Quote bei den befragten iPhone-Benutzern mit 7 Prozent etwas niedriger. Der Overather Hersteller Quintec stellt Erweiterungen seiner "All-inclusive"-Appliance SmartCom Center vor. Es kann nun zusätzlich als Anwendungsserver für klassische Windows-Anwendungen, wie zum Beispiel Lexware, oder als Datenbankserver genutzt werden. So kann die aktuelle Version 3.0 laut Hersteller zum Allrounder für kleinere Unternehmen werden: Es ist Kommunikationsserver, Dateiserver und Anwendungsserver in einem. Erreicht wurde diese Fähigkeit durch die Integration einer Virtualisierungslösung. Auf dem SmartCom Center können nun virtuell Windows-Serverprozesse, wie zum Beispiel MS SQL Server, oder Warenwirtschaftssysteme und branchenspezifische Serveranwendungen zur Verfügung gestellt werden. Kunden können diese virtuelle Maschine optional mit dem SmartCom Center erwerben.

Der Reiseveranstalter TUI geht interessante neue Wege beim Kundenservice und bietet seinen Kunden über den App Store einen kostenlosen Reisebegleiter für Mallorca an. Das mit dem iPod touch und dem iPhone kompatible Programm hält nach der Aktivierung neben den persönlichen Reisedaten eine Menge allgemeiner Infos vom Stadtplan mit Hotelmarkierung bis zu Sprachtipps bereit.

NPD finds featurephones account for 72% of new handset sales in the US
Smartphone sales may be growing at a steady rate these days but, if NPD's latest numbers are any indication, it looks like they still have quite a ways to go before they become the norm among cellphone users. As the market research group found during its latest survey, less expensive featurephones accounted for an impressive 72% of all new handset sales in the US during the second quarter of the year, which is only a 5% drop even in the face of a 47% jump in smartphone sales (to 28% market share) over the same quarter last year -- a 14% jump in overall handset sales accounts for some of that discrepancy. PlayStation Home 1.3 will let you launch any game from inside the metaverse

Blackberry browser to support Flash and Silverlight
We're not sure what kind of processors are going into the new Blackberries, but they are going to have to be pretty burly to handle the new technologies being thrown at it. CBS's video ad for print not much better than its video ads for TV
Call us crazy, but this whole idea of embedding video in magazines (like we've seen on the cover of Esquire in the past) seems rather callous.
