AT&T responds to the FCC, says it "had no role" in removing Google Voice from the iPhone App Store
Whoa -- we were just sent AT&T response to the FCC's investigation into the rejection of Google Voice apps from the iPhone app store, and Ma Bell isn't pulling any punches: according to the letter, AT&T "had no role in any decision by Apple to not accept the Google Voice application." That puts the ball pretty firmly in Apple's court, but it doesn't close the door on AT&T's involvement in App store approval shenanigans entirely, since the letter also says "AT&T has had discussions with Apple regarding only a handful of applications that have been submitted to Apple for review where, as described below, there were concerns that the application might create significant network congestion." We're guessing that explains what happened to SlingPlayer Mobile -- we'll see what the FCC says about that. We're uploading the PDF for your perusal now

Apple reconsiders rejected iPhone apps, C64 emulator on the way?
We're always a little hesitant to get too optimistic about changes to the App Store approval process, but it looks like there's been a few hopeful changes to the way things are done in the past few days, which could well lead to some previously rejected apps becoming available. Perhaps the most encouraging sign is that Apple seems to actually be going back through rejected apps and contacting develops to resubmit their app (without any changes, mind you) for an "expedited review." FCC to look into Google Voice, iPhone debacle next week?
The FCC's next open committee is on Thursday, and maybe -- just maybe -- we'll be able to get to the bottom of this whole "App Store / Google Voice rejection" mess. First, the committee plans to look into ways to "foster innovation and investment in the wireless communications market," issues related to "truth-in-billing," and exclusivity agreements between carriers and handset manufacturers, which critics say punish consumers in rural areas that the "big four" (Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile) don't serve. The strange tale of VoIP and the Telcos (Updated)
We don't follow Android as closely as we probably should, so this is news to us: Today's USA Today says that Google is using an entirely different VoIP neutering strategy at the behest of Tmobile. AT&T forbids Apple from allowing VoIP applications from running on their network. T-Mobile makes Android use theirs according to the report.
Apple does allow VoIP applications over Wifi (or at least they had until Google Voice came along), esentially because AT&T doesn't control any part of that ecosystem. For instance, should Apple kill Google Voice functionality on the iPod touch because AT&T doesn't want it on the iPhone?
Strangely, Tmobile/other carriers are forcing Google's Android to take an entirely differ

Apple ships Logic Express 9
Apple has begun shipping Logic Express 9, an entry-level variant of the full-featured Logic Studio 9 software for musicians. Logic Express is fully compatible with GarageBand projects, allowing an easy transition to the more advanced software. AT&T to demand data plans on all smartphones
A leaked memo surfacing today and confirmed by AT&T for Electronista has revealed the company will soon require that every smartphone be attached to a data plan. The message obtained by BGR warns that any new or upgrade customer moving to an AT&T-supplied smartphone from September 6th onwards will need to have the $30 smartphone data plan alongside their voice plan, regardless of the manufacturer

AT&T says NYC 850MHz 3G now complete
AT&T late yesterday answered questions by confirming that it had completed its 850MHz 3G upgrade in New York City. Faxing in Mac OS X
Faxing documents seems to be one of those antiquated technologies that is here to stay. Even with many digital alternatives available for sending and receiving documents, faxing refuses to be replaced and instead has kept up with current forms of communication, integrating into email and IP networking.Perhaps the idea of having an original copy is what makes faxing more appealing than emailing a Word or even a PDF document, but regardless of the reason, faxing is still around and quite commonly used.

Instead of allowing full Skype VoIP access on Android, they are only allowing Skype Lite to work on the device. Skype Lite works a bit like Google Voice - which requires Skype to go over Tmobile's voice line - which incurs voice minutes

Think again, 'cause the company's now let slip its new Exilim EX-Z33 model, which offers just a little bit less all around compared to its slightly higher-end counterparts. Analyst ups Apple estimates after meeting execs
An analyst for the Thomas Weisel research firm, Doug Reid, says he has raised his estimates for Apple's stock performance based on meetings with the company's management. EPS for the 2009 fiscal year is now expected to be $5.83 instead of $5.77, while the FY10 figure has been raised from $6.06 to $6.51. A price target of $180 has been set for Apple stock, with an Overweight rating.

Europäischer Druckermarkt bricht im ersten Halbjahr 2009 um 24 Prozent ein
Nach aktuellen Zahlen von Gartner haben die Hersteller von Druckern, Kopierern und Multifunktionsgeräten im ersten Halbjahr 2009 in der Region EMEA rund 18 Millionen Geräte verkauft. Das sind 24,4 Prozent weniger als im ersten Halbjahr 2008. Den stärksten Rückgang verzeichnen die Analysten beim Marktführer Hewlett-Packard. Studie: 28 Prozent der Firmen informieren sich im Internet über Bewerber
Eine im Auftrag des Bundesministeriums für Ernährung, Landwirtschaft und Verbraucherschutz (BMELV) durch das Dimap-Institut durchgeführte Studie (PDF) hat die langgehegte Vermutung bestätigt, dass sich Firmen bei der Bewerberauswahl stark auf Informationen aus dem Internet und aus sozialen Netzwerken stützen. Von den 500 im Juli dieses Jahres befragten Unternehmen nutzen 28 Prozent das Internet für Personalentscheidungen. Immerhin 36 Prozent informieren sich auch mittels sozialen Netzen. Fast 80 Prozent der Firmen, die das Internet nutzen, recherchieren dort schon vor der Einladung des Bewerbers zum Vorstellungsgespräch. Großunternehmen tun dies intensiver als kleinere Unternehmen.

iPhone als Ladekontrolle
Nissan hat eine Prototyp iPhone App entwickelt, die dem Fahrer erlaubt den Batterie-Ladestatus zu überprüfen. Die App verbindet das iPhone mit dem IT-System des Fahrzeugs, um u. a. den Status der Lithium-Ionen-Batterien zu überprüfen. Fahrer können so die Aufladung ihrer Autos auch aus der Entfernung zu kontrollieren. Neben der Überwachung des Batteriestatus können Informationen zur Ladezeit und Ladekosten übermittelt werden. Eine weitere Funktion ist die Fernbedienung der Klimaanlage, die sogar der Energieeffizienz dienen kann: Wird erst nach dem Losfahren die Innenraum-Temperatur reguliert, leidet die Batterieleistung und so auch die Reichweite. Wenn das Auto mit einer jedoch Ladestation verbunden ist, kann es sinnvoll sein, zum Anlaufen der Klimaanlage oder Heizung den Strom der Ladestation zu nutzen.

Verwirrung um Auslieferungstermin von Mac OS X 10.6
Apple könnte schon am 28. August mit der Auslieferung von Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard beginnen. Das ging zumindest kurzzeitig aus einer Produktseite des Apple Store hervor. Bislang hatte der Hersteller noch keinen konkreten Veröffentlichungstermin für sein neues Betriebssystem genannt, sondern lediglich den September als groben Richtwert ausgegeben.

Apple plans TV sets, Apple TV gets Hulu - analyst
Claims that Apple will introduce a full-fledged television set have reemerged, with Piper Jaffray analyst, Gene Munster, making the claim.

XML Office Dispute: Is Microsoft Bluffing?
To respect decision released by the judge regarding I4i's claims for patent infringement (using XML file format in Word), Microsoft announced that it would stop selling its Office Suite if the US justice does not suspend this decision or if the final verdict confirms the initial legal statement. Redmond's giant is most likely trying to bluff to demonstrate the strong impact of this decision on the IT market, for corporate and users. On the other side, one would not understand why such a company should not respect patents (especially considering how Microsoft supported IT/software patent policies in US). In addition, by acting as a potential victim, Microsoft is also demonstrating that it owns a monopoly on this market, something that many countries and/or authorities would be interested in investing further.

Dänische Studie entmystifiziert das iPhone
Eine kürzlich veröffentlichte Studie des dänischen Beratungsunternehmens Strand Consult widerlegt einige Mythen, die in der Telekom-Branche um das iPhone kursieren. Demnach sei das Gerät weder Kundenmagnet noch ein erheblicher Faktor für die Steigerung von Marktanteilen unter den Netzanbietern. Unter der Bildbezeichnung “Nano 5rd” kam heute ein Bild in unsere PR-Mailbox, das eine Hülle für den iPod nano darstellt und an die Hülle erinnert, die im Juli bereits auftauchten. Fujitsu korrigiert Gewinnprognose deutlich nach oben

Schon im Sommer 2007 hatte Apple für die Vermarktung des Apple TV eine Darstellung gewählt, die dem Bild des Fotografen Louis Psihoyos erstaunlich ähnelt: Eine Wand aus hunderten Bildschirmen, die vor einem schwarzen Hintergrund in einem Halbkreis angeordnet sind. US-Behörden genehmigen Sun-Übernahme durch Oracle
Oracle hat bekannt gegeben, dass das US-Justizministerium die geplante Übernahme von Sun Microsystems genehmigt habe. Die Business Software Alliance (BSA) hat mitgeteilt, dass der Internetprovider Keyweb Online Limited mit Sitz in Erfurt den bei ihm gehosteten russischen Torrent-Tracker Free-torrents.org von seinen Servern genommen hat. Mac-Besitzer dürfen sich freuen: Die nächste OS X-Version mit Namen Snow Leopard (10.6) wird aller Voraussicht nach am 28. August ausgeliefert. In verschiedenen Apple Stores weltweit ist bereits eine Seite für den Snow Leopard Up-To-Date-Service verfügbar, dort kann man, sofern man nach dem 8. Apple erreicht zweistelligen Marktanteil in Kanada
Trotz Rekordverkäufen von Netbooks konnte Apple im letzten Quartal in Kanada den Marktanteil steigern und kommt nun auf zehn Prozent, so IDC Canada. Verglichen mit dem Vorjahr wuchsen die Verkäufe bei Apple um 24,8 Prozent. Die gesamte PC-Branche musste hingegen Einbußen hinnehmen, 14,6 Prozent weniger PCs wurden verkauft. Still up as of this writing, the page clearly says Snow Leopard is shipping by next Friday, August 28th. No way to actually order it at this point and no clue whether or not this is some glitch, but if the gang at Cupertino are really planning to launch in a week's time, we wouldn't be surprised to hear something official sooner rather than later.

Look, we're all for accelerated learning, but somehow the idea of strapping our limbs into the Concert Hands setup is a wee bit disconcerting. Locked at the wrists onto a sliding mechanical bar, the apparatus guides our paws to the proper keys, while pulses are sent to your fingers to tell you what keys to press. Intimidating? Sure, but honestly, we're more worried about what our idle hands might learn if this thing was hooked up to the wrong AI okay, probably just a Chopin piece, but you never know. Apple update mends MacBook Pro freeze and bleep
Apple has shipped Hard Drive Firmware Update 2.0, software which addresses issues encountered with some MacBook Pro hard drives.
A few MacBook Pro owners had been complaining of experiencing brief system freezes and unusual hard drive bleeping noises.
The company also introduced Bluetooth Firmware Update 2.0.1, offering bug fixes and better compatibility with the Apple Wireless Mighty Mouse and Wireless Keyboard. This software’s meant for all Macs with Bluetooth based on the Broadcom chipset, so may not show as available in every Mac’s Software Update

Former Palm boss spurned Jobs non-employee poaching deal?
Former Palm CEO, Ed Colligan, spurned an approach from Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, when the latter proposed both refrain from hiring each other’s employees.
Colligan had the conversation with Jobs in August 2007, Bloomberg reports. He refused the request, saying: “Your proposal that we agree that neither company will hire the other’s employees, regardless of the individual’s desires, is not only wrong, it is likely illegal.”
The conversation took place two months after Apple’s introduction of the iPhone, shortly after Palm hired former Apple exec, Jon Rubinstein (now Palm CEO), to aid development new smartphones.

SlingPlayer Mobile 1.1 for iPhone picks up App Store approval
That sweet little update to SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone that Sling submitted for Apple's perusal about a week and a half ago is now approved and available -- version 1.1, as it were -- bringing native DISH Network navigation, improved widescreen support, and improved response times throughout the app. Separately, Sling has updated us on the 3G-compatible flavor of the app that they've submitted for consideration outside of the US, but so far, no dice -- the company hasn't heard back from Apple, which means it's all WiFi-only for the moment.
