Mad Men chooses Apple distribution instead of TV
The TV drama series Mad Men is set to forgo distribution by its previous broadcasters in Canada, following a deal for exclusive availability online through Apple, according to Media in Canada. Viewers watching the earlier seasons will have to watch the third through iTunes Canada.

BenQ intros V-series Eco LED displays
Electronics maker BenQ has recently introduced two new LED-backlit monitors, the 24-inch V2400 Eco and 21.5-inch V2200 Eco. Quake Live for Mac set to arrive on August 18th
Following its promise to expand Quake Live to new platforms, id Software is ready to launch the Mac and Linux versions on August 18th. The game follows the same concept as the first-person shooter Quake III Arena, although played through a browser instead of a dedicated installation. The company admitted in May that the Mac and Linux versions proved to be more difficult than initially expected.

Palm prepping Pre with North American GSM, but for whom?
Palm seems to be making an active, conscientious effort to say as little as it can about the GSM version of the Pre, possibly in an effort to give Sprint as much spotlight as possible before its exclusivity expires -- but as we all know, it's real and it's coming. Thing is, Palm has always implied that it's being limited to European duty with a 3G radio that fails to cover bands that are of any interest to North Americans, so what the heck is this noise all about? T-Mobile, Verizon top cellular support ranks
JD Power gave a rare three-way tie for the top spot in customer support among US cellular carriers this week. No surprise that the Zune HD announcement has resulted in a flurry of iPod rumors, and there's a couple good ones going around today. You know what? The Nokla E97 is not a bad looking handset. Of course, with a 2.2-inch touchscreen, things could get ugly real quick if the UI isn't up to snuff -- and we're guessing it ain't. BrainPort lets you see with your tongue, might actually make it to market
We first saw the crazy BrainPort in 2006, but the intervening time hasn't been wasted by its developers, who've brought the quirky visual aid to the cusp of commercial viability. If you'll recall, the device translates signals from a head-mounted camera to electrical pulses that lightly zap your tongue in response to visual stimuli -- early results have shown people can regain a good bit of their spatial awareness and even read large writing. Verizon tests first data connections on LTE network in Seattle and Boston
Big Red's flexing its 4G muscle today, announcing that it has successfully completed the first true tests on its nascent LTE network -- end-to-end data calls that presumably approximate real-world usage. Sony to court iPhone devs, match App Store pricing?
We've known for a while now that "snackable" content (inexpensive apps for instant gratification) was in the cards for the PSP, a fact that supports rumours reported by Pocket Gamer that handheld games for the PlayStation Network will be priced in the €1-5 range -- on par with Apple's App Store. iPhone 3GS owners happier than Palm Pre owners
Those who bought an iPhone 3GS are much more likely to be very happy than those who bought the Palm Pre, a study by ChangeWave and RBC Capital Markets shows. As fans of Real Genius, we're as intrigued as you are by the concept of a flying laser the size (and shape) of a Boeing 747-400F, and have been tracking Boeing's test-flights of its Airborne Laser platform quite closely. China Unicom now denies $1.5b Apple iPhone deal
China Unicom this morning denied earlier reports it has purchased five million iPhone’s at a cost of near $1.5 billion.
The China Business News claimed Apple had reached a deal with China Unicom to sell the iPhones, now, once again, China Unicom denies a deal is on the table.
“Talks between us and Apple have been going on for some time, but no agreement has been reached yet," said Unicom spokesman Yi Difei as reported by The Street. "There are all kinds of possibilities.There is no particular timetable for the talks."

Once bankrupt Psystar forces Phil Schiller, others in deposition as clone case continues
Hopefully none too frazzled following his recent spate of letter-writing, Apple’s marketing chief, Phil Schiller, will be required to offer his deposition in the ongoing Apple versus upstart unlicensed clone maker, Psystar, case.
Schiller is just one of several high level Apple employees who Psystar’s “people” will be taking depositions from as they attempt to defend themself against an Apple legal action. Apple has accused Psystar of violating the Mac OS X licensing agreement and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act by installing the operating system on PCs.

Gaming gets serious as iPhone drives industry investment, change
All change in the games industry where the iPhone gold rush is generating serious deals and forcing major strategic change.
There's big prizes at stake. Most smartphone users (62 percent) download one to five applications per month, while iPhone users are far more active, with 82 percent downloading apps, according to Goldman Sachs. iPhone users, more than those on any other platform, are keen on games, the analysts confirmed.

Lenovo's issued a recall for the batteries on six of its ThinkPad models. The batteries are apparently causing a range of problems, including bringing up the error messages "irreparable damage" and "battery cannot be charged," and causing overall short capacity batteries, or those than cannot be charged or experience massive drops on the fuel gauge quickly. China Unicom now denies $1.5b Apple iPhone deal
China Unicom this morning denied earlier reports it has purchased five million iPhone’s at a cost of near $1.5 billion.
The China Business News claimed Apple had reached a deal with China Unicom to sell the iPhones, now, once again, China Unicom denies a deal is on the table.
“Talks between us and Apple have been going on for some time, but no agreement has been reached yet," said Unicom spokesman Yi Difei as reported by The Street. "There are all kinds of possibilities.There is no particular timetable for the talks."

In den letzten fünf Jahren gab es jeweils im Verlaufe des Septembers oder Oktobers einen oder zwei (2005 gar drei) Special Events von Apple. Auch in diesem Jahr könnte der eine oder andere Special Event anstehen - nicht zuletzt zumindest der in den letzten paar Jahren schon fast zur Tradition gewordene «Special Music Event». Hochgerechnet könnten es gar dreiviertel Dutzend neue Produkte bzw. Produkt-Aktualisierungen werden.

Once bankrupt Psystar forces Phil Schiller, others in deposition as clone case continues
Hopefully none too frazzled following his recent spate of letter-writing, Apple’s marketing chief, Phil Schiller, will be required to offer his deposition in the ongoing Apple versus upstart unlicensed clone maker, Psystar, case.
Schiller is just one of several high level Apple employees who Psystar’s “people” will be taking depositions from as they attempt to defend themself against an Apple legal action. Apple has accused Psystar of violating the Mac OS X licensing agreement and the Digital Millennium Copyright Act by installing the operating system on PCs.

Knapp vier Monate nach Einführung des X4 955 Black Edition hat AMD ein neues Spitzenmodell der Phenom-II-Reihe mit 45 Nanometern Strukturbreite vorgestellt. Der 3,4 GHz schnelle Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition unterstützt den Sockel AM3 sowie DDR3-Speicher mit einer Frequenz von bis zu 1333 MHz. So, there's good news and bad news. The good news is that Qik for iPhone 3GS is now available, and it's completely gratis to download. The bad news is that it probably won't do exactly what you want it to. Fanboys might want to avert your eyes. We didn't get a good look at the shooter (Eric Schmidt?) but we have a feeling his actions arn't going to be appreciated around these parts. The good news is that you now know not to put your iPhone up against a 9mm handgunif that was ever a consideration.

'Sources' say no Apple tablet until 2010
And so it continues. It seems like just when rumorland is ready to claim this month or this season as the absolute certain sure time of the Apple tablet, those pesky "sources" get cold feed and bump the imaginary release date back a year or so. At least that's what the folks at The Loop are saying. They claim "very reliable sources" have called the September rumor "flat out wrong," and state that we won't see the tablet until the first half of next year sometime. Sigh. Don't give up internet, if we just wish hard enough we know that anything is possible.

Debbie Downer Dalrymple: No Tablet until 2010
Jim Dalrymple, former Macworld Editor at Large and current CNET contributer says he's heard that there will be no tablet at the September event. The event will be typical music and iPods only. The iTablet, according to him, won't be revealed until 2010.
Very reliable sources familiar with the product have said speculation of the tablet being introduced during the September event are flat out wrong. The Apple tablet, they said, would not see the light of day until the first part of 2010.
Though Dalrymple seems pretty sure of himself, the beard has its doubts.

Book scanning gets a 1,000 fps turbo mode
No matter how fly or flashy modern scanners become, there's no getting away from their page-by-page assembly line style of operation. Or so we thought.
