First pic of Microsoft retail store's construction -- both Abercrombie & Fitch getting nervous
Here you have it, folks. We knew this was coming, but the first photographic evidence of a Microsoft retail store under construction has just come to us -- via the company's Twitter account -- and we have to say, it brought a few tears of joy to our eyes. The first two stores are set to be opened in Scottsdale, Arizona and Mission Viejo, California this fall. Wonder if the inside will look anything like those plans we saw?

Workaround for OS X 10.5.8 wireless problems
A workaround has cropped up for people who're affected by wireless problems with the latest OS update. This workaround requires you to have a copy of an OS X 10.5.7 installation, so you can grab a few kernel extension files from it for use with 10.5.8.

Apple set to launch live event streaming to iPhone
Apple is ready to broadcast its first iPhone live stream of a concert event, debuting with the UK techno group Underworld playing at 9 p.m. from Oakland. AT&T has allegedly remained fairly quiet regarding the event, likely as a precaution to prevent network strain, according to NewTeeVee.

Nokia device passes FCC for T-Mobile USA, looks an awful lot like a new Internet Tablet to us
Every week, random, seemingly anonymous Nokia handsets quietly pick up FCC approval. Most will never see the light of day on an American carrier, and the ones that do have usually already been announced so that by the time we figure out what the FCC filing refers to, it's uninteresting. Today, though, we noticed a Nokia RX-51 get certification, and we were immediately intrigued; standard Nokia phones have an "RM" designation, so "RX" has us thinking that this is no ordinary phone. Stealth Computer kicks and shoves its Warrior 2000 rugged tablet out the door
Stealth Computer isn't exactly going for much subtlety with a rugged laptop line called "Warrior," but subtlety is hardly part of the equation when we're talking about a convertible tablet that's protected from repeated drops, shocks, dust, water, and, um, lint. Bad NVIDIA chips continue to plague Apple and other PC manufacturers
The Inquirer reports that NVIDIA is taking a $120 million hit again this quarter on charges related to a faulty die and weak packaging material which was used in its graphics chips. NVIDIA had previously taken a write-down of almost $200 million to cover warranty and product replacement costs on bad GPUs it supplied to Apple and other PC manufacturers.
NVIDIA is the GPU maker on all but a handful of Macintosh systems.
The trouble kicked off last July when it was reported that some Nvidia graphics chips were overheating. Nvidia said it was all down to weak packaging materials then. Later the INQ discovered that there was a problem with the soldering on the chips, al

Sans Digital upgrades EN104L servers with Xeon CPUs
Sans Digital has announced it is adding new Xeon CPUs to its 1U 4-bay EN104L+XE servers. The EN104L line will get dual-core 1.86GHz CPUs with 2MB of cache and 2GB of DDR2 memory, allowing for over 100MBps of throughput over a single network connection. The improved processor will also allow for new features in the servers, like folder replication and snapshots.

Microsoft shows store construction, job posts

Dell Mini 9 makes surprise reappearance on Dell's website
The official word from Dell may be that its Mini 9 netbook has hit "End of Life," but it looks like the company may have had a change of heart or (more likely) a surplus of excess stock, as the popular netbook has now made a surprise reappearance on its website. Google to circumvent Apple ban on Google Voice
Google is working on an alternative means of getting Google Voice to the iPhone, says the New York Times. FCE Converter enables FLV, MKV, RMVB import
iOrgSoft has released its latest file conversion utility, FCE Converter. The software is capable of converting a wide range of file types into formats supported by Final Cut Express. Korean network operator KT has confirmed that it plans to offer the iPhone in the country. Kim Yeon-hak, KT’s Chief Financial Officer, said during a conference call that the “Apple iPhone will be in our smartphone line-up. Faulty GPUs reportedly cost NVIDIA another $119 million
We already knew that NVIDIA had to shell out anywhere from $150 to $250 million last year to resolve issues related to its defective GPUs, but it looks like that may have only been the beginning, with The Inquirer now reporting that the company has also been forced to pay an additional $119.1 million over the past four months to fix a faulty die and weak packaging material used in the affected graphics chips. iPhone set for Korean introduction through KT
The iPhone has finally been confirmed for a Korean introduction through the local carrier KT, according to Telecoms Korea. A separate company, SK Telecom, also claims to have been involved in talks with Apple. OS X 10.5.8 wireless issues: Airport slow or nonfunctional when on battery
Yesterday we found that some laptop owners who applied the 10.5.8 system update were having difficulties connecting to their WiFi networks. There are a variety of reports regarding this issue, some of which claim the WiFi cannot connect at all, others that claim WiFi is slower, and some discussing only intermittent WiFi connectivity. Despite these, many other people who have updated (including us at MacFixIt) have not had these WiFi problems even on the same hardware reported.

Bell HSPA to allow AT&T roaming, due in fall

Large Hadron Collider to run at half-power until end of 2010

PowerColor bringt HD 4770 mit AC-Kühler
Anfänglich war TSMCs 40-nm-Prozess von sehr schlechten Yield-Raten geplagt, weswegen die Ausbeute bei gerade einmal 20 bis 30 Prozent gelegen haben soll. Darunter hat die Radeon HD 4770 von ATi gelitten, die als erster 3D-Beschleunigung auf den neuen Fertigungsprozess setzt und dementsprechend kaum lieferbar war.

Gene Munster talks $1.2 Billion Apple tablet
Piper Jaffray senior analyst Gene Munster issued another guestimate report today on Apple's forthcoming Tablet, somewhat hedging his earlier 2010 forecasts to late 2009/early 2010.
He even went out and had a computer-generated rendering of what he envisions the tablet looking like. (Above right). This isn't unlike many other Apple Tablet renderings we've seen.
He also laid out these points:

Der überarbeitete PCIe-Standard wird nun nicht wie geplant in diesem Jahr, sondern vermutlich erst 2011 fertiggestellt werden. Apple tablet unlikely to make a major dent in sales?
Apple's rumored tablet device is real, but it should not be expected to have the financial impact of something like the iPhone, says Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Google CEO Eric Schmidt declined to take normal pay during his tenure on the Apple board of directors, according to SEC documents. Apple proxy filings submitted between 2007 and 2009 show that Schmidt took home only $8,712 in Apple products, plus a "commemorative gift" worth $7,580. Mujik - Sound-App ohne Knöpfe und Regler
Mujik zu beschreiben ist nicht einfach. Das kostenlose Programm ist grafisch sehr nett umgesetzt und macht in erster Linie mal Musik. Diese lässt sich beeinflussen und mit etwas Übung auch gezielt selbst “komponieren”, indem man einen Fesselballon über den Himmel schweben lässt oder Papierläuse durch ein Buch jagt.

Gene Munster talks $1.2 Billion Apple tablet
Piper Jaffray senior analyst Gene Munster issued another guestimate report today on Apple's forthcoming Tablet, somewhat hedging his earlier 2010 forecasts to late 2009/early 2010.
He even went out and had a computer-generated rendering of what he envisions the tablet looking like. (Above right). This isn't unlike many other Apple Tablet renderings we've seen.

At least one of the members of the Apple board has a commitment to innovation, chairman and former CEO, Intuit, Bill Campbell.
He spoke at a conference this week where he discussed the nature of innovation, business management and made a few candid statements concerning Apple CEO, Steve Jobs.
A quick history lesson - before his time at Intuit, Campbell was president and chief executive officer of GO Corp., a pen-based computing software company. Previously, he founded and served as president and chief executive officer of Claris, which was purchased by Apple in 1990.

Apple takes a chunk of the gaming industry
Games are the most popular applications sold through the App Store, fresh research claims, dominating Apple’s sales lists and proving the company has become a games industry force at long last.
July’s Distimo report’s available now and contrasts both the Apple and Android smartphone application markets. They reflect the popularity of games on the iPhone platform (though we shouldn’t ignore the contrast may be specious, as the iPhone platform also includes the iPod touch, which is more widely used as an entertainment, rather than communication, device).
Curiously, ten of the top 15 paid apps sold through the App Store are games, with utlities occupying three spots at the top.

Apple’s iPhone is “substantially expanding” digital music markets on a global scale, Warner Music boss, Edgar Bronfman confirmed yesterday during the major label’s financial results call.

Dell today has quietly put out three desktop LCDs aimed mostly at the entry level, two of which are known to be ready for the US. Heading the range, the ST2310 is meant most for the home with Dell's newer, rounded design, a 23-inch 1080p panel and HDMI in addition to both DVI and VGA. Apple ändert Bestimmungen für iPhone-Entwickler
Wer für den App Store entwickelt, weiß die Plätze auf seiner Liste der Entwickler-Geräte zu schätzen. In diese Liste lassen sich iPhone-IDs von Handys eintragen, auf denen eine Vorab-Version der Software direkt über iTunes installiert werden kann, ohne dass sie im App Store veröffentlicht werden müsste. Bislang standen jedem Entwickler 100 dieser Listenplätze zur freien Verfügung. Doch für größer angelegte Test-Aktionen oder mehrere Applikationen reicht das oft nicht aus. US-Börsenaufsicht SEC verdächtigt Intel der Unterstützung von Terroristen
Die eigentlich für den Wertpapierhandel zuständige US-Bundesbehörde Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) hat in einem jetzt vom Wall Street Journal aufgespürten, äußerst merkwürdig formulierten Brief Intel am 12. Mai 2009 zu einer Stellungnahme aufgefordert, weil Terroristen unterstützende Staaten im Besitz von Technologien des Chiphersteller seien. In dem Schreiben heißt es: "Uns ist eine Nachricht von 2008 bekannt geworden, dass PCs in Kuba Ihre Celeron-Prozessoren enthalten. Kuba, Iran, Sudan und Syrien hat das State Department als Unterstützer von Terrorismus identifiziert. Diese Staaten unterliegen ökonomischen Sanktionen und Exportkontrollen."

Starcraft 2 auf 2010 verschoben
Tja, und mit der Überschrift sind wir auch schon am Ende der Information angelangt. Activision Blizzard verschiebt zwei wichtige Titel, neben Singularity eben Starcraft 2, auf das Jahr 2010. Als Grund wird angegeben, dass Starcaft 2 gemeinsam mit einer verbesserten Battle.net-Version erscheinen solle. Angepeilt wird ein Termin im ersten Halbjahr.

DoS-Attacken auf Social-Network-Dienste
Gestern wurden die Social-Network-Dienste wie Facebook und Twitter angegriffen. Die DoS-Attacken (Denial of Service) führten zwar im Fall von Facebook nicht zu einem Ausfall, doch war der Zugang zeitweise nur eingeschränkt möglich. Springer-Chef Döpfner setzt auf mobile und Paid Content
Mathias Döpfner, Vorstandsvorsitzender beim Medienriesen Axel Springer, glaubt daran, mit digitalen Bezahlinhalten doch noch Geld verdienen läßt - und zwar mobile. Bei der Vorstellung der (mauen) Halbjahreszahlen zeigte er sich zuversichtlich, dass mit zunehmender Verbreitung von mobilen Endgeräten wie dem iPhone auch die Nachfrage nach Paid Content steigen werde: "Mobile Endgeräte bieten völlig neue Chancen. Hier sind die Nutzer gewohnt, zu bezahlen", unterlegte er diesen Optimismus, denn: "Micro-Payment und Abomodelle bieten eine große Chance die Kostenlos-Kultur des Internets zurückzufahren". In der Zwischenzeit macht die Flaute am Werbemarkt auch Springer (u. a. "Hamburger Abendblatt", "Bild", "Die Welt") zu schaffen. Im ersten Halbjahr sank der um Sondereffekte bereinigte Betriebsgewinn um 24 Prozent auf 162,3 Millionen Euro. Apple takes a chunk of the gaming industry
Games are the most popular applications sold through the App Store, fresh research claims, dominating Apple’s sales lists and proving the company has become a games industry force at long last.
July’s Distimo report’s available now and contrasts both the Apple and Android smartphone application markets. They reflect the popularity of games on the iPhone platform (though we shouldn’t ignore the contrast may be specious, as the iPhone platform also includes the iPod touch, which is more widely used as an entertainment, rather than communication, device).
Curiously, ten of the top 15 paid apps sold through the App Store are games, with utlities occupying three spots at the top.

Vorletzte Woche aktualisierte Microsoft sein Office-Paket 2008 für den Mac um ein Service Pack 2. Zahl der Handy-Nutzer knackt 4 Milliarden Marke

iPhone-Entwickler: Thomas Gripwire verzweifelt gesucht
In den letzten Tagen häufen sich Berichte über iPhone-Entwickler die Microsoft abwirbt. IPhone Apps sollen umgestrickt werden um unter Windows Mobile 6.5. zu laufen. Als Beispiel dient die Fallstudie des Portierungs-Projektes Amplitude, einer iPhone App von Gripwire, die mit dem Mikrofon aufgenommene Umgebungsgeräusche verstärkt und grafisch darstellt.
Mit fünf Anwendungen die in diesem Jahr in den AppStore gekommen sind, und sieben die sich zurzeit im "Review" befinden, ist Gripwire stark im Entwickeln von Softwarelösungen auf mobilen Plattformen und Geräten. Angeblich hatte das "Versuchskaninchen" Thomas Gripwire "besondere Schwierigkeiten", die nur mit Hilfe einer Entwickler-Gemeinschaft gelöst werden konnten. Wir konnten jedoch Thomas Gripwire nirgendwo verorten. Luke Thompson ist der Entwickler, so jedenfalls laut Constanze Roman. Und sie sollte es als Angehörige des Windows Mobile Community Team wissen.

Hitachi Releases First 2 TB HD at 7200 rpm
While its competitors announced new products recently, Hitachi fired back with its new 7K2000 series.
With storage capacity up to 2 TB, those 3.5" HD models are the first ones to spin at 7200 rpm. They sport 32 MB of cache (64 MB would have been better), and should drain 10% less power than the models from the previous series. Unfortunately, prices remain unknown.

Exploding iPod and Apple Policies
Last month in UK, a father found the iPod of its daughter emitting some weird noise, prior releasing a strange smoke. He immediately through it outside of the house where the device literally exploded about 30 seconds later!
When contacted by the father who claimed refunding for the exploded iPod, Apple Customer service made a mistake in presenting an agreement. Instead of explaining that they will refund for the exploded iPod under a classical NDA, they apparently did not manage to make it clear, and at the end Apple appears like a company willing to silence claims from a father and his daughter.
It is about time for Apple to officially react to this news and explain properly its policies and procedures.

Ask Engadget: Best 20- to 24-inch LCD monitor with HDMI / DVI?
We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget question is coming to us from Geoff, who is hoping to find a new LCD to serve two masters."I have a MacBook Pro and an Xbox 360 and I would like to get a 20- to 24-inch display that will support both devices. The speakers should be inbuilt, or there should be an aux out on the display to hook up external speakers. Help! Please!"The glaring omission of a price limit here has us a bit scared, but we get the feeling Sir Geoff isn't looking to shatter the bank. Keep in mind that a speedy refresh rate will be needed for the gaming aspect, and it needs an HDMI and DVI socket at the very least. Get those gears a-grindin'!

The Three Musketeers game coming to Mac
Dingo has announced its latest game, The Three Musketeers, based on the Alexander Dumas novel with the same name. Players take on the role of D'Artagnan, who must assist the famous Three Musketeers when a plot to disgrace the queen emerges. The game is played from a top-down view and features hand-drawn 2D graphics.

High-end Samsung AMOLED phone coming Q4 to Sprint, sub-$100 Android phone due out next year

Symbian soll nächstes Jahr komplett überarbeitet werden
Nokia mag zwar weltweit die Nummer 1 unter den Mobiltelefonherstellern sein, ist aber in den USA praktisch nicht existent und setzt mit Symbian ein Betriebssystem ein, welches in die Jahre gekommen ist. John Gruber ist in der Blogosphere ein bekannter Name - und sein Blog Daring Fireball wird offenbar auch in der Apple-Chefetage gelesen. Phil Schiller äußerte sich persönlich gegenüber Gruber zu dem Vorwurf, Apple befürworte Zensur bei einem Wörterbuch. Iowa 911 call center now accepting texts; Twitter and Facebook status updates can't be far behind
As of this week, callers can now text their requests for fire, police, or ambulance, to the emergency call center in Black Hawk County, Iowa -- both a nationwide first and a definite improvement for deaf and hard-of-hearing residents who have thus far had to rely on TDD devices. Unlike voice calls, however, the 911 operator can't get your location from a text message, meaning that the caller must first respond to a request for their city or zip code before the call gets routed. Currently, only i wireless subscribers (a local carrier affiliated with T-Mobile) can use the service, but plans are afoot to bring other carriers on board as well. Phil Schiller's response to Ninjawords dictionary word censorship
Daring Fireball got an email beatdown today from Phil Schiller about the controversy surrounding Apple's decision to "censor" Ninjawords, a dictionary app for the iPhone. It turns out that most of Daring Fireball's argument yesterday was just wrong.

Employees sue Apple for failing to pay for overtime
Apple has become involved in yet another lawsuit, as a former employee, Kenyon Zahner, claims to have been forced to work over 40 hours a week without additional compensation, according to InformationWeek. The worker has filed a class action lawsuit with other Apple employees in Florida, although details of his role at the company remain unclear.

Apple reverse iPhone developer program limit policy
Apple may have reversed its decision prohibiting developers from redefining their list of devices that qualify for the ad hoc iPhone Developer Program, says MacMagazine. Comcast: DOCSIS 3 well ahead of schedule
Comcast today revealed that the rollout of its much faster DOCSIS 3.0 cable Internet service is significantly ahead of its original timetable.
