Monkeys and scientists develop persistent "plug and play" control over brain-to-computer interface
While we've seen some pretty amazing things so far with computers jacked into human and monkey brains, systems so far have had to be re-learned each session by their subjects. In a new development, researchers at Berkeley have managed to get their monkeys to develop a "memory" for the controls, and recall them instantly each day. To do this, the scientists kept track of specific neurons from day to day -- a little tough to do, but obviously worth the hassle. Final Cut Pro lets you burn to Blu-Ray...bag of hurt en route to new Macs?
Purely speculation here:
As Gizmodo points out, the new final Cut Pro Studio allows direct burning to BluRay Disc. Problem is, Apple doesn't sell any Blu-Ray hardwareyet. Steve Jobs famously called Blu-Ray "a bag of hurt" because of all of the licensing restrictions, etc. that went along with putting BluRay into Macs.
You could always, of course, buy a Blu-Ray extern

Tablet for 2010? AppleInsider agrees with Gene Munster
Although they admit they've had a long history of Apple Tablet predictions (or "setbacks"), AI is now going with Gene Munster's earlier prediction that Apple's tablet will be released at the begining of next yearor perhaps later. TechCrunch: Verizon moving LTE launch up for Apple devices
It's a big stretch but here's their story:
While it has been known for a while that LTE will be rolling out in select markets at some point next year. The most recent roadmap has 20-30 markets as a target for the second half of 2010. But our source says that Verizon is putting just about everything it has in to moving many of these markets up to Q1 2010 — which is the same time frame for this supposed new Apple device. While the source had no information to specifically tie Apple to this move by Verizon, they did note that there was talk of at least one non-dongle (wireless card) product that this LTE launch was being specifically geared towards.

Augmented reality browsing is coming to iPhone 3.1
The LA Times has the story. We've talked about our love of Augmented reality apps before, but according to the Mark Milian, the iPhone will only be allowing access to the necessary APIs to build these types of apps in iPhone OS3.1 which they anticipate for Septemberright about the time some new iPods should hit the scene.

New Quicktime player, backgrounds and kernel in Snow Leopard (Updated)
Quicktime 10.0 (51) arrived today with a new look icon. Yeah, it is just an icon but we like! (feel free to snap it up for yourselves). You can also scrub through Quicktime movies by scrolling left or right on the trackpad, just like on iPhone OS 3.0.

Microsoft Store layout designs, concepts leaked
Layout designs of Microsoft's upcoming retail stores have been leaked in a PowerPoint Presentation. According to Gizmodo, the presentation was drafted by Lippicott, a "design and brand strategy" consultant firm reportedly hired by Microsoft to help further the concept and design of the stores. Wooden electronic ruler concept makes measuring fun again
Think the market on measuring things has been cornered? Think again, cause designer Shay Shafranek recently came up with this new concept that adds a bit of newfangled technology to and old fashioned wooden ruler. The secret, it seems, is a line of tiny metal points running along the edge of the ruler, which can detect when you touch 'em with a pencil and display the exact measurement on the LED display discreetly hidden inside. Better yet, the ruler can apparently store measurements and add 'em up as you go along, eliminating the need for any pesky remembering or math. Wie Mac Rumors meldet, hat Apple in der Nacht damit begonnen einen neuen Build von Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard an Entwickler zu verteilen. Windows 7 kommt mit Browser nach Europa
Nachdem Microsoft vor einigen Wochen verkündete, in Europa nur eine Version des kommenden Betriebssystems Windows 7 ohne vorinstallierten Browser anbieten zu wollen, war der Aufschrei groß. Auch die Europäische Kommission, die den Wettbewerb durch den vorinstallierten Internet Explorer gefährdet sah, sprach sich gegen diese Lösung aus. Microsoft bessert nun nach.

Zehn Tage nach Build 10A411 stellte Apple in der vergangenen Nacht ein weiteres 742 Megabyte großes Snow Leopard-Update für Entwickler bereit. Post bekräftigt Pläne für "Brief im Internet"
Die Deutsche Post DHL hat gestern im Rahmen ihrer Halbjahrespressekonferenz Pläne für Produkte wie den "Brief im Internet" konkretisiert. Wie der Bonner Presseblog berichtet, ähnelt das Prinzip des "Briefs im Internet" dem Versand von Nachrichten über E-Mail-Accounts. Es unterscheide sich jedoch dadurch, dass Nutzer nur Post von eindeutig identifizierten Absendern erhalten. Damit reduziere sich das Risko, Spam zu bekommen.

ASUS O!Play HDP-R1 media player gets the hands-on treatment
Our amigos over at Engadget Spanish have managed to get their hands on ASUS' O!Play HDP-R1 media player and they've taken it for a spin. The player, which supports a HD video playback in a multitude of codecs, including MPEG1/2/4, H.264, VC-1, and RM/RMVB in a multitude of packages including .mp4, .mov, .avi, .divx, and .mkv (and that's not an exhaustive list by any means). There is still no word on pricing or release date in the US, but the one Engadget Spanish laid hands on seemed to be for sale in Taiwan for around €119, or about $169. Luchsohren fürs iPhone
Spätestens mit OS 3.0 und den "Sprachmemos" hat Apple jedes iPhone in ein kleines Diktiergerät verwandelt. Wer schon mal Kurzinterviews führen oder zumindest Gesprächsprotokolle zusammenfassen muss, weiß um die Bedeutung der Mikrophonqualität bei solchen Übungen. Eine zehnfach bessere Aufnahmequalität für das iPhone-Mike verspricht Anbieter Brando aus Hongkong mit seinem "Mini Capsule Microphone". Konkret sollen Aufnahmen um bis zu 25 dB verstärkt werden. Der Soundnippel wird in den Kopfhöreranschluss gesteckt. Schick: dort ist er flexibel angebracht und kann so auf die Tonquelle ausgerichtet werden. Das dürfte sowohl in der Interviewsituation wie bei Video-Aufzeichnungen gute Dienste leisten. Das Luchsohr kostet 14 US-Dollar plus Versand und soll ab Ende Juli ausgeliefert werden.

Panasonic and Sony to Offer Movies on Memory Cards
Panasonic and Sony will launch a new offer in Japan: distribute movies on micro SD memory cards, instead of the usual support DVD or BD. Among the very first movies: Pirates of the Caribbean.
One will be able to play those movies on most devices from Panasonic sporting a micro SD slot, from mobile phones to TV including car video systems. Of course, those movies will be loaded with enough DRM to "prevent" any copy till someone finds the way.

New Macs Flags as Obsoletes on September 15th
Apple just released an update of the list of old computer models flagged as obsolete on September 15th:
iMac USB 2.0
iMac (17" Flat Panel, 1GHz)
Xserve RAID (SFP)
So, after this date, you will not have the possibility to repair those models in a certified Apple center, as spare parts will not be available anymore (impossible to order new ones); but you should still be able to find them on internet from third-parties or Mac users.

Microsoft Store concept revealed in leaked design presentation?
Microsoft's very real brick-and-mortar stores are not too far off now, and it looks like Gizmodo got its hands on a Powerpoint presentation purportedly from "design and brand strategy" consultant firm Lippicott for how these retail outlets might turn out. The presentation overall is reminiscent of Apple's stores, complete with its own "Answer Bar" for troubleshooting. Apple reverses course on 17+ app promo codes
Apple has allegedly changed its policy regarding iPhone apps carrying 17+ ratings, now allowing the developers to issue promo codes to reviewers, according to SlashGear. The company previously had restricted use of promo codes to apps with lower age ratings.

TechCrunch: Verizon moving LTE launch up for Apple devices
It's a big stretch but here's their story:
While it has been known for a while that LTE will be rolling out in select markets at some point next year. The most recent roadmap has 20-30 markets as a target for the second half of 2010. But our source says that Verizon is putting just about everything it has in to moving many of these markets up to Q1 2010 — which is the same time frame for this supposed new Apple device. While the source had no information to specifically tie Apple to this move by Verizon, they did note that there was talk of at least one non-dongle (wireless card) product that this LTE launch was being specifically geared towards.
The usual caveats apply.&
