Bill Gates calls Chrome OS more of the same, "surprised people are acting like there's something new"
We've already heard from Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer on Chrome OS, and it looks like Bill Gates has now had his say on the upstart operating system as well. Speaking with CNET News, Gates more or less described Chrome OS as just another Linux distribution, saying that "there's many, many forms of Linux operating systems out there and packaged in different ways and booted in different ways," adding that, "in some ways I am surprised people are acting like there's something new. I mean, you've got Android running on Netbooks. It's got a browser in it." Gates further went on to get another dig in at Google by say

WiFi-less iPhones roll off assembly line -- and into Chinese pockets?
Word from the land of Yao is that Foxconn has begun mass production of a 3G-enabled iPhone 3GS-looking device that lacks WiFi functionality, though it's being suggested that these may actually lack a WiFi module altogether as opposed to the software lock we'd heard about earlier. Microsoft's attention may now be focused on Windows Marketplace, but a recently filed trademark application seems to suggest that the company could maybe, possibly have something even bigger in store for the future. Factory mass-producing Chinese iPhone without Wi-Fi
As Apple continues to negotiation with China Unicom, an anonymous source has told NetEase that Foxconn is already mass producing a special version of the iPhone 3G for use on Chinese networks. The device is allegedly code-named "90" by the supplier, while the standard 3G model is known as "82" and the new 3GS handset is named "88."

iPhone 3.1 beta 2 disrupts AT&T tethering
The beta 2 release of iPhone 3.1, seeded to developers on Tuesday night, also appears to undo tethering workarounds for AT&T subscribers, reports say. Through tethering users can turn an iPhone into a modem, providing Internet access where no landline connections exist. AT&T has only promised official tethering for later this summer however, which will also likely come at extra expense.

iTunes 8.2.1...the .1 stands for "No Pre syncing"
If you are feeling lucky, head over to Software Update and update your iTunes to 8.2.1. Unless, of course, you have a Palm Pre and want to sync with iTunes ever again. Reports indicate that this update breaks Pre syncing, at least for now. With all of the Apple break-updates lately, we are less excited about slamming the "update now" button everytime it comes up (like we usually do).

iTunes 8.2.1 brings Pre's music syncing capability to a halt? (update: confirmed)
Palm itself had warned that the Pre's iTunes sync functionality could be broken at a moment's notice (and at Apple's whim), but we're pretty sure no one expected it'd happen this quickly. We've been able to confirm that version 8.2.1 of the software prevents the sync from working, meaning that you've got to add music the old-fashioned way -- the Pre functions as a USB drive, too -- until Palm gets around to patching the hack (if they decide to patch it, that is). This could end up being a protracted game of cat-and-mouse, which is entertaining to watch but nightmarish for the consumers down in the trenches actually trying to use this stuff. Amazon reportedly close to deal for UK Kindle
This one isn't a done deal just yet, but Mobile Today is reporting that Amazon is "close to finalizing a launch date" for the Kindle in the UK, and that it's now in "advanced negotiations with a mobile operator for an MVNO." From the sound of it, however, Amazon is taking a somewhat hands-off approach this time around, with it not only tapping Qualcomm to manufacture the device, but to secure connectivity for it with a carrier as well. 1.8-inch HDD sales may point to iPod classic's death
The iPod classic may soon become extinct, at least in its traditional form, recent hard drive sales are thought to indicate. The Classic is the only iPod that continues to use a hard drive, specifically a 1.8-inch 120GB model. Yup, we see a ton of flash drives round here -- but this is the first one we've seen from the august house of Calvin Klein. Somehow, these sunglasses with a 4GB flash drive stuffed into the right stem are simultaneously uninteresting and horrifying to us though we certainly enjoy the mental imagery of spotting someone sporting these while half a stem-piece is jammed into their laptop. North Carolina Data Center to be used to support iTunes and iPhone stores
Some details of Apple's new North Carolina data center were revealed today by the Charlotte Observer. According to the paper, the purpose of the site is primarily to support iTunes and App Stores. That means that Apple is looking at taking over some of the services provided by firms like Akamai to stream media and apps to Apple devices. Interestingly, Apple at one time owned a significant portion of Akamai.
Apple is expected to support its iTunes and iPhone stores from the Maiden site, which will be its only operation on the East Coast.

Apple shifting MacBook orders from Hon Hai to Quanta
According to Digitimes, Apple is continuing to shift its MacBook manufacturing away from Foxconn (Hon Hai) and to Quanta Computer. It isn't certain what is causing Apple to move but things like manufacturing costs, quality and workplace conditions could all be factors.
Apple and Sony will reportedly shift some notebook OEM orders from Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) to Quanta Computer in 2010, according to sources at component makers. Apple already shifted some orders from Foxconn in June meaning the OEM's share of Apple's notebook shipments in 2010 is expected to drop from 20% to only around 10%, the sources noted. Verwirrung um DDoS-Attacken
Vietnamesische Computersicherheitsexperten haben die Distributed-Denial-of-Service-Attacken (DDoS), die in der vergangenen Woche Server in Südkorea und in den USA lahmgelegt haben, untersucht. According to Digitimes, Apple is continuing to shift its MacBook manufacturing away from Foxconn (Hon Hai) and to Quanta Computer. It isn't certain what is causing Apple to move but things like manufacturing costs, quality and workplace conditions could all be factors.
Apple and Sony will reportedly shift some notebook OEM orders from Foxconn Electronics (Hon Hai Precision Industry) to Quanta Computer in 2010, according to sources at component makers. As foreseen, Microsoft started today the sale of 76000 licences for Windows 7 at rock bottom prices. As expected, their servers are completely saturated. Knowing their infrastructure, it would need a colossal multitude of requests to block their servers.

In der Nacht wurde eine neue Build von Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard veröffentlicht. Das 748MB große Update mit der Buildbezeichnung 10A411 liefert neben den üblichen “allgemeinen Systemverbesserungen” auch einige kleine Änderungen und Updates für bestimmte Softwarekomponenten.

Diese schreiben seit langer Zeit mal wieder ein Minus von 389 Millionen US-Dollar aus, was jedoch allein an der von der EU verhängten Kartellstrafe liegt. Ansonsten sind die Zahlen deutlich besser als von den Analysten erwartet.

EU-Strafe drückt Intels Quartalsergebnis ins Minus
Intel hat im zweiten Quartal einen Verlust von 398 Millionen Dollar oder 0,07 Dollar je Aktie erwirtschaftet. Darin enthalten ist die von der EU verhängte Strafzahlung über 1,06 Milliarden Euro. Ohne sie hätte der weltgrößte Chiphersteller einen Gewinn von 1 Milliarde Dollar oder 0,18 Dollar je Aktie erzielt. Die Schätzungen von Analysten beliefen sich auf 0,08 Dollar je Aktie.

Die Mobil-Spezialisten von comScore haben den Markt für mobile Finanzdienstleistungen untersucht. Die Ergebnisse finden sich in der Studie "Mobile Financial Services: The Market Today & Opportunities for Tomorrow" , werden aber auch in einem webinar am 30.07.09 vermittelt und vertieft. Aus den Ergebnissen: Alle Kunden von Finanzdienstleistungen bestehen auf Bandbreite. Beispielsweise beim Online-Banking liegt die Nutzung von bandbreitenstarkem PC-Zugang mit 53,3 Prozent nur noch relativ knapp vor mobilen Browsern wie Safari mit 44,1 oder mobilen Spezial-Applikationen (Apps; 40,6 Prozent der Smartphone-Nutzer). Logic states that the updates multiply when the release date approaches for a piece of software… and logic is respected for Snow Leopard. Yet another pre version: the 10A411
Among other things, this build makes some improvements to the Quick Time reader which it needs; apart from the interface, one has the impression of going back several years with the level of the functionalities. It is true that Apple set out again at zero for this version (the 10.0). This, with the new Finder, is one of the large building blocks of Snow Leopard. One can suppose that they will continue to evolve right up to the wire with pre versions to come. The 10A411 also sees the arrival of a new font for the menus of the Dock. Apart from these, since the preceding versions were already rather stable and fast, one can hope for the same thing for this release.

A new security vulnerability affecting Firefox 3.5 has been discovered, according to Secunia. Chinese factory conditions reflect poorly on Apple
Poor factory conditions in a number of Chinese manufacturing facilities, including those that make the iPhone and iPods, may be reflecting poorly on Apple, according to a Bloomberg report. North Carolina Data Center to be used to support iTunes and iPhone stores
Some details of Apple's new North Carolina data center were revealled today by local paper, the Charlotte Observer. According to the paper, the purpose of the site is primarily to support iTunes and App Stores. That means that Apple is looking at taking over some of the services provided by Akami to stream media and apps to Apple devices. Interestingly, Apple at one time owned a significant portion of Akami.
Apple is expected to support its iTunes and iPhone stores from the Maiden site, which will be its only operation on the East Coast.
