iKey's AK-39 wearable keyboard is about as weapon-like as it sounds
iKey's churned out plenty of rugged keyboards in its day, but it looks to have really stepped up its game with its new AK-39 wearable keyboard intended specifically for military use. Among other things, this one conforms to full MIL-461 standards, is able to be used in environments with harsh electromagnetic interference and, of particular importance, it's designed to be used with a glove, and in either left or right-hand configurations. Smasher 1.7 brings support for Creative Suite
Insider Software has released v1.7 of Smasher. The program eliminates corruption from font caches, and other temporary files, aiming to prevent font-related problems. The update brings support for Creative Suite 2, 3 and 4, as well as QuarkXPress 6, 6.5, 7 and 8, and lastly Office X, 2005 and 2008. CUPS print spool support is also present.

BlackBerry update in UAE reportedly surveillance software in disguise
There's not much in the way of official statements on this one just yet, but itp.net is reporting that a recently pushed out update for all BlackBerry users on the UAE-based carrier Etisalat is not a "performance enhancement patch" as advertised, but rather some spyware that could potentially give Etisalat the ability to keep an eye on its customers' messages. The first suspicions about the update apparently arose when users noticed dramatically reduced battery life and slower than usual performance from their phones, which led to a bit of detective work from programmer Nigel Gourlay, who pegged the software down as coming from electronic surveillance company SS8. AMG releases Soundtracks for iMovie

Black Wii packaging looks as good as its contents
We've already gotten quite a few glimpses of Nintendo's forthcoming black Wii but, with that August 1st launch date in Japan now fast approaching, things are now starting to get even more real. Real like packaging. Of course, while the box is nothing more than a black version of the existing Wii packaging, we have to agree with our pals at Joystiq and say that it only makes the system all that more intriguing. Unfortunately, there's still no word on a release 'round here, but we assume / hope that's only a matter of time considering the reception this thing has received.

Apple takes home new multi-touch trackpad patent
Apple has been granted a critical patent by the US Patent and Trademark Office, covering the company's wide-ratio multi-touch trackpad. The first real-world example of the pad emerged in the beginning of 2008, when it appeared in the MacBook Air. It has since migrated to MacBooks and MacBook Pros, and should remain standard on Apple notebooks for some time.

PC sales to see largest drop since 2001

Managing PCI-express slots in Mac Pros
Mac Pro computers come with three unused PCI-express expansion slots for adding extra graphics cards, RAID controllers, multimedia, and I/O controllers, among other options, to expand your Mac's capabilities. In most Mac Pros the PCI-express slots are set up such that the first two are capable of x16 speeds, and the last two are only capable of x8 speeds at a maximum. Intel preparing Core i5 750, i7 860 and 870 chips
Intel has allegedly slipped information on three new processors, currently in development. Two of these fall under the existing Core i7 line, but also under a new 800 sub-series: the 2.8GHz 860, and the 2.93GHz 870. Microsoft to launch music streaming service "imminently," could tie-in with Xbox / Zune
While even bigwigs can fudge release numbers from time to time, the word "imminently" just carries a certain aura. Der Bundesverband der Verbraucherzentralen (VZBZ) hat gegen die Social Networks MySpace, Facebook, Lokalisten.de, Wer-kennt-wen.de und Xing ein Unterlassungsverfahren eingeleitet. Der VZBZ kritisiert die Vertragsbedingungen und Datenschutzbestimmungen der Netzwerke, die Nutzer benachteiligten und den Betreibern weitgehende Rechte einräumten. Der Hacker Geohot, bekannt für einige Exploits auf dem iPhone, hat einen eigenen Unlock herausgebracht.
Er behauptet, dass dieser besser sei als der Unlock des Dev-Team (ultrasn0w), da er keinen eigenen daemon dafür starte, sondern den lockdownd daemon nutze.

1.5 Billion Apps now distributed through the App Store
Apple issued a brief press release today indicating that, on its one year anniversary, the App Store has reached the following milestones: 1.5 billion apps distributed, 65,000 app catalog, and 100,000 developers.
“The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up.”
Also of note, Apple has crossed the 40 million mark in total iPhone/iPod touch sales.

Promising to allow the differently rich consumer a chance to experience "the latest and most advanced digital imaging technology" (of 2008), Samsung has today announced two new entry-level cameras. Samsung preps two 52X zoom camcorders
Wrapping up its camera introductions today, Samsung today unveiled two particularly high-end standard-definition camcorders. The 32GB SMX-K45 and SDHC-only SMX-K40 both shoot 480p but are highlighted through their 52X stabilized zoom lenses, which by themselves can capture very distant subjects. They also have a digital zoom feature that pushes the zoom slightly further to 65X.

Unlocked iPhone 3GS on sale from Apple Hong Kong
Unlocked versions of the iPhone 3GS are now on sale from Apple's Hong Kong online store. Samsung as part of its camera launches today jumped into the pocket camcorder realm normally dominated by Pure Digital. The HMX-U10 has a much higher resolution sensor and shoots 1080i widescreen video in H.264 as well as 10-megapixel still images. Impossible to ignore, all the web is abuzz about the rumor that Apple will be launching a touch screen tablet by October. The product will be their response to the ulta-portable netbooks, but with the Apple flair. This product will of course be very expensive, around $800, but it will completely drop the keyboard in favor of being completely touch. Some believe that its processor will not come from Intel, but rather will be the result of the PA Semi acquisition and thus be a ARM product. In this situation, it would use an operating system somewhere between that of the iPhone and of a Mac, with an experience radically different from the one we are familiar with on our laptops.

Detaillierte Infos zu iPod touch- und iPhone-Backups
Bei jeder Synchronisierung eines iPod touch oder iPhone mit iTunes wird ein Backup des Geräts erstellt. Apple hat diesen Mechanismus nicht ohne Grund eingebaut, denn "freiwillig" kümmern sich nur die wenigsten Nutzer konsequent um eine Sicherung ihrer Daten. Wer auch nur einmal von der Möglichkeit Gebrauch gemacht hat, seinen iPod oder sein iPhone von einem Backup wieder herzustellen anstatt das Gerät komplett neu konfigurieren zu müssen, weiß diesen Service zu schätzen.

Studie: Marktanteil von Netbooks steigt 2009 auf 20 Prozent
Netbooks werden 2009 weltweit einen Anteil von 20 Prozent am Notebook-Markt erreichen. Dies prognostiziert eine Studie der NPD-Group-Tochter DisplaySearch. Tmax Window 9 to compete against Windows
Definitely these are difficult times for the software companies, Microsoft at the head. After Russia, the next attack comes from from South Korea. In October a beta operating system will be released called Tmax Window 9. This system folows Crossover and will allow you to launch the majority of the software developed for Windows.
The acknowledged goal of the industrialists who support this initiative is to boost the local market to free themselves from Microsoft who holds 99% of the market share there. Hersteller Sygic teilt uns heute mit, dass die Probleme mit dem "unknown error #8003"-Fehlers bei seiner Turn-by-turn Navigations-App "Mobile Maps Europe" endlich gelöst werden konnten. Apple 9.7-inch tablet for October?
The translations are a little sketchy but the ChinaTimes is basically saying that in October, Apple will launch a $800, 10-inch tablet. Most of this information has been published before so it isn't certain whether or not this is a rehash of that information or from new sources. The biggest question at this point is which OSX will it run? Will it be the Mac OS, the iPhone OS or some hybrid? The iPod launches are usually in September so a iPod platform device would indicate some deviation. Also, Apple's tablet patents seem to indicate that they are working on a full MacOS tablet.

Apple blocking push notifications on Hactivated iPhones?
Is Apple trying to block Push Notifications on SIM-unlocked iPhones running on non-Apple blessed carriers? Czech-based PoweryBase reports that Hactivated iPhones don't get a response from Apple's Push Notification servers.
Further investigation shows that Apple may be blocking Push Notification Service on purpose to fight users who break carrier monthly plan agreements and unofficially unlocking these subsidized devices to work with other carriers which Apple is not partnered with.

Nvidia recommends updating GeForce FX 4800, GTX 285 Mac drivers ASAP
Macworld is reporting that the current NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 and GeForce GTX 285 drivers won't work with the upcoming Mac OS 10.5.8 update. Dirty Little Secret: TomTom car adapter "should" work with iPod Touch as well
Macworld last week got a few secrets out of Tom Murray, Vice President of Market Development for TomTom. The meat of it was that the TomTom's Car kit wasn't just going to just be a dumb plastic car mount for the iPhone. The device will also have a dedicated speaker and GPS (and maybe some gyroscopes). Some interesting news coming out of VentureBeat (via Giz) on the state of Apple's in-house processor development as it relates to tablets:

Change the processor of a Mac Pro Nehalem
Anandtech has published a long article on the Mac Pro Nehalem. It is full of tests results, but also covers their adventures to replace the two 2.26 GHz processors with the 2.03 GHz versions.
During their adventures they damaged one of the processor connectors on the CPU board, which forced them to change it. These connectors are very fragile and do not accept any inaccuracy at the time of the installation of the processor. It should be noted that the replacement card cost them only $400; this should kindle hope for those which chose a mono CPU model.

Hitachi jump into the market for 3,5" 2 TB disks
Running behind Western Digital and Seagate, Hitachi should market a 2 TB 3.5" hard drive very soon, the HD32000IDK7. This disk should have first rate performance running at 7200 rpm and with a chache of 32 MB. Its price of $270 is close to the other products of this capacity. The push of SSD disks should encourage the manufacturers of hard disks to start again a battle with the capacity, the weak point of the SSD. HBO, Cinemax coming to Comcast's On Demand Online
Following Starz, HBO has announced plans to provide programming on Comcast's On Demand Online trial. Of course, this move shouldn't surprise anyone given previous hints HBO was looking for ways to brings its video online or previous trials it has participated in. Lexmark announces new line of touchscreen printers
Lexmark has announced a new line of inkjet printers, with eight all-in-one devices to be released on September 1. The printers each integrate 4.3-inch capacitive touchscreens for "as needed" navigation. Graphical icons provide quick access to basic print, copy and scan functions. The printers also utilize Lexmark's new Vizix print technology, featuring separate ink tanks to improve printing speed
