Intuit delays Quicken for Mac until 2010
A long-delayed update for the Mac version of Quicken has been delayed yet again, says Quicken PR manager Scott Gulbransen. The software is now expected in February 2010, having originally been announced for sometime in 2008. As recently as the last Macworld Expo, the company was forecasting a 2009 launch.

Seit es mit Navigons MobileNavigator die erste vollwertige Navigationslösung für Europa in den App Store geschafft hat, steigt die Nachfrage nach Autohalterungen und wir erhalten jede Menge Zuschriften zu diesem Thema. The Office 2010: The Movie trailer (for a film that doesn't exist) makes it seem like the life of a nerd is super dangerous, filled with excitement and beautiful people. We don't want to burst anyone's bubble here, but the reality is something a bit more mundane: fourteen hour days spent in pajamas, cereal for breakfast and dinner (we don't get lunch breaks), and families who constantly struggle with the question, "do you even have a job"? Rogers rolls out 50Mbps DOCSIS 3.0 service, 802.11n router
Well, it looks like Canadians no longer need to be envious of some of the speedy internet options available south of the border, as Rogers has just announced the roll-out of its own DOCSIS 3.0-based service that matches the likes of Comcast's FiOS service. As you might expect, however, coverage is limited to the Greater Toronto Area to begin with, although Rogers is promising that it'll be rolled out to some other, yet to be specified areas in the "coming months." What's more, Rogers is also introducing a new 802.11n router alongside the service, and it's even giving one away to the first fifty customers that sign up for the Ultimate service (priced at $150 per month). After those are gone (and some do indeed still seem to be available), the router will sell for $200.

WSJ: Apple to recall some iPod Nanos in Korea
According to the WSJ, the Korean government has asked, and Apple has agreed, to recall some iPod nanos that might overheat. The recall request was based on four complaints since Dec 2008 of the original iPod Nano. Three of the complaints were due to battery meltdowns during recharging. Amazon creates wireless portal for AT&T and Verizon...no iPhones
Amazon has just released a new wireless portal, amazonwireless.com, where they try to simplify the process of buying a mobile device.
They have signed up the two biggest US carriers, AT&T and Verizon, and have most of the devices that each carrier sells on their own website. Tmobile and Sprint are said to be coming soon.
However, on phone in particular is missing from the AT&T microsite: the iPhone. Why? Walmart and BestBuy sell the iPhone, why can't Amazon?

Nokia's not exactly known for its beefy, ultra-survivable gear, but unless the human race plans on getting a whole lot less clumsy, rugged phones will always be a good idea -- and Espoo's 3720 certainly seems to fill the bill. Steigende NAND-Flash-Preise schwächen Markt für Notebook-SSDs
Einer Untersuchung von iSuppli zufolge schwächen die derzeit steigenden Preise für NAND-Flash die Verkäufe von Solid State Drives (SSD) für Notebooks. According to the WSJ, the Korean government has asked, and Apple has agreed to recall some iPod nanos that might overheat. NVIDIA's 40nm GeForce G210 and GeForce GT 220 desktop GPUs emerge
We can't say we're entirely shocked to see 'em, but a new pair of GPUs based on 40 nanometer process technology has surfaced over at NVIDIA's website. Both of the new devices are expected to be sold exclusively to large OEMs for integration into pre-configured machines, and they'll both support DirectX 10.1, OpenGL 3.0, and CUDA. The lower-end GeForce G210 arrives with a 589MHz core clock speed, 512MB of DDR2 RAM and a 64-bit memory interface; meanwhile, the GeForce GT 220 ups the ante with a 615MHz core clock rate, 1GB of GDDR3 RAM and a 128-bit memory interface. As for outputs, the former packs VGA, DisplayPort and DVI, while the latter sticks with VGA, HDMI and DVI. Video: Antares DLR-H2 becomes planet's first fuel cell-powered aircraft
Fuel cells may have lost some steam of late here in the automotive realm, but they're still going strong at 30,000 feet. Over in Hamburg, Germany, the Antares DLR-H2 has become the first piloted aircraft capable of taking off using only power from fuel cells, which means that it flies with absolutely no carbon emissions. The craft is based on the Antares 20E glider, which boasts a wingspan of just over 65 feet and has a cruising range of 466 miles over five hours. iPod nano 1G: Späte Rückrufaktion in Süd-Korea
Rückrufaktion bei Apple: In Südkorea wird die erste Generation des iPod nano aus Sicherheitsgründen zurückgerufen. Die Batterie des nano soll sich bei einigen Nutzen so stark erhitzt haben, dass es zu Explosionen und Verformungen kam. TiVo and Best Buy alliance to yield co-branded DVR, TiVo software on Insignia and Dynex TVs
It's all pending an official announcement later this morning but both the New York Times and San Jose Mercury News are reporting that Best Buy and TiVo are forming a "broad partnership." Under the multi-year alliance, Best Buy will "heavily" promote TiVo products at its 1,100 stores across the US. TiVo, for its part, will develop a special flavor of its set-top box that will be sold in Best Buy stores and lets the retailer advertise its products and services directly to TiVo subscribers -- items can then be purchased via the TiVo remote. The alliance goes even deeper as it will see TiVo's software and search tools added to Best Buy's own-branded consumer electronics (like Insignia and Dynex HDTVs) and Best Buy's Napster music service will become available to TiVo subscribers on their TVs. Amazon drops Kindle price $60 ahead of possible Apple tablet?
Amazon dropped the price of a standard Kindle to $299 today hoping to spur sales of the popular device. That's down $60 from Amazon's normal price which has held steady since the device was released two years ago. It isn't certain what made Amazon drop its price but we can hope that a possible Apple tablet coming down the pipe may have pushed Amazon to become more competitive in their pricing. Swisscom: Tethering wird eingeführt
Ab sofort können iPhone-Benutzer die bei Swisscom sind via iTunes ein neues Netzbetreiber-Update laden. Die neuen Netzbetreiber-Einstellungen (Swisscom 4.2) für iPhone OS 3.0 schalten nun offiziell Tethering auf einem Swisscom-iPhone frei.

OCZ kündigt neue SSD der Vertex-Turbo-Serie an
10 Prozent mehr Leistung verspricht das neue SSD-Modell Vertex Turbo SSD vom Hersteller OCZ, das sich bereits vor zwei Wochen ankündigte. Der Vertex Turbo ist mit einem 64 MB großen Cache ausgestattet, der mit 180 MHz taktet - immerhin 14 MHz mehr als der Vorgänger. Eine speziell angepasste Firmware soll dafür sorgen, dass auch der von 166 auf 180 MHz erhöhte Host-Takt sowie die Transferraten von 210 MB (Lesen) beziehungsweise 210 MB (Schreiben) ausgenutzt werden.

First Google Chrome OS screenshots leaked?
It's not much, in fact, these screenshots are incredibly easy to fake. Still, a hastily constructed WordPress blog has been setup to host what are claimed to be the world's first screenshots of Google's new Chrome OS -- hailed as both a Microsoft Windows and Apple OS X killer or Google FUD generator depending upon who you're listening to. As the story is told, a Google representative demonstrated a private beta build of the OS to an anonymous Acer parts supplier yesterday, presumably somewhere in Taiwan. The picture above was grabbed breathlessly while the Google rep was distracted. Highlights of the demonstration break down as follows:

Data Domain geht nun doch an EMC
Netapp und Data Domain haben ihren Anfang Juni vereinbarten Zusammenschluss für gescheitert erklärt. Stattdessen übernimmt EMC den Spezialisten für Datendeduplizierung für einen Kaufpreis von 33,50 Dollar in bar. Die Transaktion hat damit ein Gesamtvolumen von rund 2,1 Milliarden Dollar.

Studie: LBS-Markt verdoppelt sich
Gartner-Zahlen zufolge werden sich die mit Endverbrauchern via Location Based Services (LBS) erzielten Umsätze im Jahr 2009 verdoppeln. 2008 wurden in diesem Segment weltweit von rund 41 Mio. registrierten Nutzern (Subscribers) 998,3 Mio. Dollar umgesetzt, dies soll trotz stagnierender Mobiltelefonumsätze (alle Segmente; der Smartphone-Teilmarkt wächst bekanntlich dynamisch) auf von 95,7 Mio. Subcribers generierten 2,2 Mrd. Dollar im laufenden Jahr ansteigen. LBS sind in der Gartner-Definition Dienste, welche die tatsächliche Position mobiler Endgeräte entweder via Satellit (GPS-Sensor: iPhone 3G und 3GS), Knoten der Mobilfunknetze (iPhone 3G) oder via WiFi-Zugangspunkten ermitteln und auf dieser Basis beispielsweise "Around Me"-Funktionen bereitstellen. Nvidia hat inzwischen die ersten eigenen in 40-nm-Bauweise gefertigten Grafikprozessoren vorgestellt. Die GPUs hören auf die Bezeichnungen GeForce G210 und GeForce GT220 und können, zumindest auf dem Papier, mit recht niedrigem Stromverbrauch überzeugen. VDSL gibt es ab September auch von Vodafone und 1&1
Vodafone und 1&1 werden ab September VDSL-Anschlüsse der Deutschen Telekom anbieten. Das gab Vodafone-Chef Fritz Joussen gestern in Düsseldorf bekannt, ohne Einzelheiten zu den geplanten Tarifen zu nennen. Die beiden Unternehmen zahlen für einen VDSL-Anschluss weniger als 30 Euro pro Monat.

Samsung's 250GB SpinPoint N3U has on-board USB, personal bonus card
It may not be the first 1.8-inch hard disk we've seen pushing a 250GB capacity, but damn if Samsung doesn't know how to market its tech. See, these drives are small as Samsung skillfully demonstrates by photographing its new Spinpoint N3U disk in front of a credit card. And by including a native PATA to USB controller on the circuit board, Samsung has helped manufacturers eliminate a bit bulk from future portable USB disk offerings. The 3,600rpm drive itself features 125GB per platter, 8MB of cache, and should be capable of withstanding drops from about 20-inches. Hörbücher: Audible mit neuer Webseite
Mit dem Hörbuch-Portal Audible arbeiten wir eng zusammen, seit der Weltmarktführer für Hörbuch-Downloads 2004 nach Deutschland kam. Gemeinsam haben wir zum Beispiel durch die ersten deutschen Privat- und Business-Podcasts sowie diverse Events dazu beigetragen, das Thema Podcasting in Deutschland zu etablieren. Wenn es darum ging das eigene Angebot zu optimieren, tat sich Audible - allem Gemecker von uns und der iFUN-Community zum Trotz - bislang allerdings immer etwas schwer.
Nun aber wurden innerhalb von wenigen Wochen unsere beiden größten Kritikpunkte am Audible-Angebot beseitigt:

Apple hat in der Nacht auf heute ein Update für Safari veröffentlicht. Safari wird mit dem 40.2 MB grossen Update auf Version 4.0.2 aktualisiert. Das Update kann via Software-Aktualisierung geladen werden.

LucasArts: 4 Euro für die Klassiker, aber kein Indi
Wie angekündigt hat LucasArts nun der ersten Welle alter Spiele mit Hilfe von Valves Download-Plattform die Rückkehr auf die PCs ermöglicht. Microsoft hat einen neuen "Laptop Hunters"-Werbespot veröffentlicht. In dem Spot sucht ein junges Pärchen nach einem Notebook mit großem Display für unter 700 US-Dollar, um Bilder von ihrem kleinen Kind zu verschicken. Beim Händler werden sie auch kurz auf Macs aufmerksam, stempeln die MacBooks aber gleich als zu klein und zu teuer ab.

Apple recalls faulty first generation iPod nano players in Korea
While Apple may have moved on to selling the 4th generation iPod nano, consumer protection agencies are still focused on gen-1. For good reason too, apparently, as there's mounting evidence that those early white and black plastic players have a tendency to overheat, swell, and possibly burst into a nasty chemical fire. BlackBerry: The End of an Era?
According to a study published by Piper Jaffray (hey might be right sometimes) competitions driven by Apple iPhone and Palm Pré have massively impacted RIM and its sales of BlackBerry massively dropped in June. For AT&T (iPhone exclusive carrier in USA), iPhone 3GS and the 3G models have dramatically reduced sales of BlackBerry. For Sprint, exclusive carrier for the Palm Pré, this new models has captured its market shares from BlackBerry. thankfully for RIM, BlackBerry models keep selling well with T-Mobile, as this carrier does not have any exclusive partnership for the Pré or the iPhone.
Of course, Palm and Apple will have to demonstrate if they can last as RIM does it for now years on this market. For the iPhone, the new entry ticket at 99 USD will for sure strengthen its basis, while Pré still have to demonstrate its capacity to become a major player in the field.

OCZ Vertex Turbo SSD Officially Unveiled
As we reported it two weeks ago, OCZ finally unveiled its new Vertex Turbo SSD models.
Thanks to an overclocked Indilix Barefoot controller (180 MHz instead of 166 MHz in classic Vertex SSD models) associated to 64 MB of cache, the Vertex Turbo SSD models offer 10% higher performance ranges: 270 MB/s in reading mode and 210 MB/s for writing. OCZ also claims to have optimized the firmware to push performance further (so far all Barefoot-based SSD had a firmware provided by Indilix).
We think that it should be possible to flash the firmware of a classic Vertex SSD with the one of a Vertex Turbo, and performance would most likely be improved too. Of course

Amazon drops Kindle price $60 ahead of possible Apple tablet?
Amazon dropped the price of a standard Kindle to $299 today hoping to spur sales of the popular device. That's down $60 from Amazon's normal price which has held steady since the device was released two years ago. It isn't certain what made Amazon drop its price but we can hope that a possible Apple tablet coming down the pipe may have pushed Amazon to become more competitive in their pricing. HTC Hero vs. T-Mobile myTouch 3G... fight!
Two long lost siblings, at last reunited. But can there ever be unity? We don't think so. At every turn, the HTC Hero seems to trounce the myTouch 3G -- it's really hardly a contest. The myTouch is certainly lighter, and in many ways "feels" smaller because of it, but the size differences really are negligible. They're still both great phones, but the Hero really feels like a million bucks, while the myTouch feels a bit like a toy. Mysterious cyber-attacker hits at federal websites, crisis averted?
It looks like a nefarious cyber-attack which affected several federal websites in the United States was a little more far-reaching than initially thought. The attack -- which started on the 4th of July -- targeted websites in both South Korea and the United States, including the Treasury Department, Federal Trade Commission and Secret Service. Various problems were still being reported days later, and while there's no official word on who the attackers were, those "people familiar with the matter" we know and love seem to be pointing their fingers at North Korea. So far as we know, no irreparable damage has been done, but we're not sure anyone would tell us if it had.
