Video: Wiimote controlling a 15-ton grapple
We've seen the Wiimote used to control plenty of wild things, and to be perfectly honest, we're pretty unimpressed with most of what we see these days. This video, however, made by an Australian with a lot of heavy equipment on hand, is truly awesome. The 15-ton grapples themselves are impressive, elegant pieces of machinery, and using Python to link the Wiimote up as controller via Bluetooth is really just icing on the cake. There are a number of hotly debated topics out there about the use and setup of Time Machine. Before its debut in Leopard, there were relatively few inquiries about backups, but since its inception, all kinds of worries and questions have cropped up about what the best strategy is for using Time Machine. With Windows 7 just months away from release, Microsoft is putting a new individual in charge of the whole Windows division. Microsoft to fight Chrome OS with browser?
Microsoft is planning a "big" announcement on Monday that may have forced Google's hand in launching Chrome OS, tech pundit and Rackspace blogger Robert Scoble claimed today. While a non-disclosure agreement prevents him from providing further details, he implies that the news will have something to do with web apps, which will be the way software can run in Google's upcoming platform.

Safari 4.0.2 stabilizes Nitro engine
Apple has posted the v4.0.2 update to Safari, its Mac and Windows web browser. The patch implements a relative handful of changes, primarily upgrading the Nitro engine to include new security and compatibility fixes. Nitro is responsible for JavaScript rendering, and is thus linked with many speed improvements over Safari 3.

SCEA's Lempel says Sony isn't playing "catch up" with Xbox Live
Sony's been out there touting its PlayStation Network user numbers for some time now, but it looks like it's now ratcheting up the rhetoric when it comes to the actual user experience as well. Taking the lead on that front is Sony Computer Entertainment America's director of PlayStation Network Operations, Eric Lempel, who recently told Industry Gamers that Sony doesn't think "there's a lot of 'catch up' [with XBL] anymore," adding that, "in some cases, I think we've got more, and we've got some other things they don't have." Samsung's folding keyboard brings a little starfighter to the cellphone

iPhone, Pre eating into BlackBerry sales
The iPhone and Palm Pre together are dragging down BlackBerry sales, according to estimates by Piper Jaffray analyst T. Michael Walkley. Third-gen iPod touch observed in testing
Apple is already testing a third-generation iPod touch, information from Pinch Media indicates. The analytics group has tracked a device using the "iPod 3,1" moniker online, which is in keeping with Apple's standard hardware versioning. Amazon cuts Kindle 2 price to $299
Amazon in an unannounced gesture cut the price of the Kindle 2 to $299. The move is the first price drop on any Kindle since the original was reduced to $359 and puts a larger gap between this and the larger Kindle DX, which still sits at its original $489 price. The company didn't provide a reason of its own for the cut, which comes even though Amazon has periodically sold out.

Google Chrome OS for H2 2010
Google announced the future availability of its own OS, known as Google Chrome OS. Expected to be launched for H2 2010, this OS will be working on x86 and ARM CPUs. It is of course too early to further comment this announcement, even though it is quite obvious that Google's first target is the NetBook, as those hardware-limited notebooks will/have hard time to run any of the forthcoming new OS (Windows 7 or Snow Leopard).

How-To: locate plist files used for specific settings
Periodically, a problem may occur with a given system setting, or some application, and the common remedy of removing a seemingly obvious preferences "plist" file may not reset the setting. In OS X, plist files are simply ways of storing editable application settings, and they can be preference files or numerous other files that are spread throughout the system. There is no easy way to find which plist file is responsible for holding a certain setting, or is involved with a given application.

Amazon's Kindle 2 gets a $60 price cut, now at $299
Nearly five months to the day after Amazon introduced its Kindle 2 e-reader, the company has decided to hack a full $60 off of the price tag in order to offer it to US consumers for $299. Sneaking under that magical $300 mark could allow the outfit to move an awful lot more of these buggers, and with the competition finally heating up, we'd say it's probably a solid defensive move as well. More iPod Touch 3,1 evidence compiled by Pinch Media
Pinch Media tracks apps usage by iPods and iPhones. In their data, they collect the model number of the iPod/iPhone being used and have been seeing more and more iPod touch 3,1's running around. This is what they had to say on the matter:
the first time an application using Pinch Analytics was run by a ‘iPod3,1′ device occurred in late April 2009;

Google officially enters the OS Wars with Chrome OS
Google's huge announcement this evening that it will push an open source, instant-on OS which runs on both Intel/AMD and ARM platfoms will be an interesting developement for Apple users. The new ChromeOS will make use of HTML5/CSS (like the Pre) which will allow applications for Chrome to also run on browsers (Chrome the best probably) on Mac, Windows and other variants of Linux. Chrome now looks like it is more a platform (like Adobe Air) than a browser.

While every other solid state drive maker is thinking of snazzy new model names to slap on their next-gen wares, OCZ Technology is actually breaking up the monotony with its Vertex Turbo SSD. Spätestens seit dem Advent des iPhone 3G und seiner LBS-/Ortungs-Funktionalität zur Standortbestimmung via GPS-Sensor existierten App-Ideen, die eine permanente Aufzeichnung der Geodaten voraussetzten. Apple hat sich bislang - wohl aus Datenschutzgründen - gegen diesen Weg entschieden. Inzwischen haben Cyril Godefroy und trackmehq sich aber des Problems angenommen. MIT entwickelt lichtempfindlichen Kleiderstoff
Forscher des Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) haben einen Stoff aus lichtempfindlichen Fasern entwickelt, die zusammen als simple Kamera dienen können. Spürt Nokia schon den Apfelhauch im Nacken?
Electronista zitiert Aussagen von Generator Resarch, wonach Apple Nokia bis 2013 als Marktführer bei Smartphones ablösen könnte. Die Analysten sehen Anzeichen dafür, dass sich dieser Teilmarkt in den kommenden vier Jahren komplett wandeln und Nokia von derzeit 40 auf nur noch etwa 20 Prozent Marktanteil absacken, während Apple mit dem iPhone auf stolze 33 Prozent kommen könnte. Sollte es so kommen, würde Apple ca. 2011 gleichauf mit Nokia liegen und weltweit ca. 77 Mio. Smartphones absetzen. Zur Begründung führt Generator Research Nokias Schwierigkeiten an, den dynamisch wachsenden Smartphone-Markt mit passgenauen High End-Angeboten zu bedienen. Apple hingegen wird ein "goldenes Zeitalter" prophezeit, in dem sich iPhone und App Store gegenseitig beflügeln. Googleofficially enters the OS Wars with Chrome OS
Google's huge announcement this evening that it will push an open source, instant-on OS which runs on both Intel/AMD and ARM platfoms will be an interesting developement for Apple users. The new ChromeOS will make use of HTML5/CSS (like the Pre) which will allow applications for Chrome to also run on browsers (Chrome the best probably) on Mac, Windows and other variants of Linux. Chrome now looks like it is more a platform (like Adobe Air) than a browser.

TomTom: Iphone-Navi im August?
Konkreter als “im Spätsommer” wurde das Erscheinen der Navigationslösung von TomTom bislang noch nicht terminiert. Die Berner Zeitung lässt nun den August als Releasemonat fallen. Beeilen sollte sich der Platzhirsch: Navigon ist bereits seit Juni im Appstore vertreten, seit Anfang Juli gibt es mit Roadee darüber hinaus eine kostengünstige OpenStreetmap-basierte Navi-Lösung für das iPhone.

Gestern erschienenen Berichten zufolge ist angeblich die Nachfrage nach dem neuen MacBook Pro 13" so hoch, dass Apple keine ausreichenden Stückzahlen zur Verfügung stellen kann. Das Wired Magazine hat sich mit den doch weit gestreuten Beschwerden über eine zu kurze Akkulaufzeit des iPhone 3GS beschäftigt und Vergleichstests zwischen einem 3GS und zwei iPhone 3G angestellt. iPod touch 3G taucht in Zugriffstatistiken auf
Die für Ende August/Anfang September erwartete nächste iPod touch-Generation wird von Apple inzwischen auch im Internet ausgiebig getestet. Das Analyse-Institut Pinch Media berichtet über ein verstärktes Auftreten eines Geräts namens "iPod 3,1" in entsprechenden Auswertungen. "iPod 3,1" steht, sofern Apple an den internen Gerätebezeichnungen nichts ändert, für die nächste, dritte iPod touch-Generation; das aktuelle Touch-Modell läuft unter der Bezeichnung "iPod 2,1".
Zum ersten Mal wurde der iPod "3,1" im April 2009 gesichtet. Ab Mai nahm der Zugriff dann deutlich zu, Pinch Media spricht von ein paar Dutzend Testgeräten die gesichtet wurden. Pinch Media erstellt Zugriffsstatistiken für iPhone-Programme und verfügt daher über derart detaillierte Informationen.

A shortage of MacBook Pro 13" ? No, of 250 GB disks
Since yesterday, very many sites have relayed information according to which the Macbook Pro 13" is such a success that Apple can not manage to follow the demand for the top-of-the-range 2,53 GHz model. This model has indeed a delivery date of 7 to 10 days against 24:00 for other models.
It does not take much studying to see that this information is false and that the shortage from which Apple suffers is not on its machines, but with the 250 GB 5400 rpm hard disks. If one chooses such a disk on the entry-line model, it also gets a deliver date of 7 to 10 days. Google announces Chrome OS, coming to netbooks second half of 2010

Video: USB powered chainsaw makes short work of a fake plastic tree
As far as USB gadgets go, this is one of the more unique ones, that's for sure. And while we usually don't have much opportunity to play with chainsaws 'round these parts (not in an official capacity, at least), the recently launched usbchainsaw.com has us wondering: perhaps we could stand to be a little more bloodthirsty in our Engadget labs torture testing -- if not for reasons of journalistic excellence, then at least for our own gratification. Of course, the i.Saw product website has all the hallmarks of a hoax -- but at least the video has provided some inspiration for the next time we're ready to wig out during a staff meeting. Sony Will Offer a Cheap NetBook Too: Vaio W
So far, Apple and Sony were the last 2 computer companies that did not follow the trend of NetBooks, aka the cheap notebook models with a rapidly limited hardware and a LCD display around 10". Well, while this market seems to dramatically slow down, Sony announced its NetBook model, aka the Vaio W.
This computer will have the usual hardware found in many models: 10" display, Intel ATOM CPU clocked at 1.66 GHz, Wi-Fi 802.11g, 1 GB of RAM, etc. However, it will offer LED backlighting to extend the battery lifetime to 3.5 hours. Its price: less than 500 USD. It will support Windows XP SP3, as Vista or Windows 7 will be too resource-consuming for its hardware (it would also be the case with Snow Leopard)

iPhone Developers and Apple: A difficult Relationship
While Apple will celebrate the first anniversary of the AppStore (capture below, with our French Touch), some developers keep reporting about their difficult relationship with Apple.
As reported by the New York Post, it is not related to the still questionable validation procedure, but how Apple deals with payments to developers. The newspaper reports the case of an anonymous developer who is expecting Apple to pay him 10,000 USD of his application, but the transfer expected in February is not done yet. Of course, it is always difficult to carefully check such report, but what we know is that developers have a hard time to communicate with Apple. The Post-Core i7 Era Unveiled
The french website Canard PC published a photo of what should be the future architecture of Intel CPU.
Known by its code name, Sandy Bridge, it should be the first desktop CPU featuring an integrated graphics in the die (on the left side). It would allow very high clock speed, over than 1 GHz, for the integrated graphics while granting it access to the cache L3 to speed up transfer of data between all components, especially CPU cores. As a sign of the future role to be played by the L3 cache (here 8 MB), its latency has been dramatically improved, and it will feature a new dedicated instructions set, known as Advanced Vector Extension (AVX), something similar to the good old Altivec from the previous century

Sprint no longer selling Pre over the phone
We've just received word from Sprint that starting tomorrow, July 8, folks will no longer be able to call into telesales to order a Pre over the cold comfort of the phone. We're told the move is being made so that the carrier "can focus inventory in sales channels where customers have the best opportunity to experience Ready Now, and we can deliver the best purchasing experience," which can be interpreted a couple of ways: either telesales are hurting Sprint's ability to properly stock local stores, they're not happy with the out-of-box experience new customers are getting without the in-store VIP treatment, or a combination of the two. Pinch Media tracks apps usage by iPods and iPhones. In their data, they collect the model number of the iPod/iPhone being used and have been seeing more and more iPod touch 3,1's running around. This is what they had to say on the matter:
the first time an application using Pinch Analytics was run by a ‘iPod3,1′ device occurred in late April 2009;

Sonos CR200 remote control's product page reveals capacitive screen, $349 price tag
Looks like Sonos has put up a staging page for its CR200 remote control along with all the specs you could ask for, and a handful of low resolution pics to boot. That 3.5-inch VGA LCD display indeed is a touchscreen, and better yet, it's capacitive. It's also a good bit smaller and lighter than its CR100 ancestor, only 2.9 x 4.5 x 0.7 inches in size and six ounces in weight -- you can probably give thanks to the aluminum case for at least some of that weight loss. Sharp's new AQUOS lineup eyes-on
We just crashed Sharp's AQUOS launch party and got a nice look at the new AQUOS panels, along with a bit of a peek at the LEDs behind the curtain. In a lot of senses, Sharp's new panels are a collection of last generation technologies: the LEDs aren't locally dimmed, the 120Hz refresh rate falls short of the 240Hz that's been bandied about of late, and the internet services don't offer video playback or WiFi connectivity. That said, the picture is looking pretty great. Sharp credits its specialized LEDs for increasing the color gamut, and new LCD tech for improved blacks and improved brightness due to better controls and less electronics getting in the way. GB intros budget-priced, Atom-based X1200 thin-and-light
This one doesn't look to be heading into the hands of consumers just yet, but China's GB is now apparently shopping its new X1200 thin-and-light around on the OEM market in the hope that some company will pick it up and do their rebadging thing with it -- and from the looks of it, they likely won't have much trouble finding some takers. Like some other hard to peg down laptops, this one packs the still somewhat rare combo of a 12-inch screen and an Atom processor, along with some otherwise standard specs including 1GB of RAM, a 160GB hard drive, a built-in webcam, and a pair of USB ports.
