HTC's redemption song: 3.5mm jacks coming to 'vast majority' of post-Hero devices
Better late than never, we suppose. Our friends at Smartphone Thoughts have it on word from a HTC spokesperson that a "vast majority of devices we launch after Hero" are gonna be including a 3.5mm headphone jack as a standard feature. The rep also added that devices already announced would "not necessarily be part of this change," which while not ruling it out entirely, doesn't get our hopes up. Still, it's refreshing to know the future generations won't be beholden to the adapter-laden shackles of its ancestors -- so Lancaster, where will you fall in all this mess?File

Chrome OS: ...but I want to run Firefox!
Google has announced its entry into the operating system market with the Chrome OS. It promises to be a Web-based operating system that has a Linux kernel, but everything else is stripped down except for the Chrome Web browser that will be the window for productivity. Google's idea is that people basically boot to the Chrome browser and then run all applications via the Web.

Microsoft's "Gazelle" browser detailed -- it's more of a research project
If you're particularly attuned to tech gossip, you'll know that Google's Chrome OS announcement has prompted a lot of whispers about something called "Gazelle" being cooked up in Microsoft's labs. Part browser, part OS, the word on the street is that Gazelle will be announced soon, and ultimately compete in some way with either Chrome (the browser) or Chrome (the OS). Plugin Galaxy 2 adds layers and blend tools
The Plugin Site has released Plugin Galaxy 2, the latest version of its plug-in suite for Photoshop, Fireworks, Photoline, GraphicConverter and Illustrator. Chinese iPhone coming in within months, say analysts
A Chinese iPhone is due by the end of the year, and possibly sooner, according to Wedge Partners. The research firm says it has performed a series of checks, which reveal that China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has receive an iPhone for testing. Apple should thus be in position to receive a network license in 2009, possibly within three to four months.

News: Mix: NFL on iPhone, iPod fire, 3GS speed, CopyTrans Manager
DirecTV has revealed that customers who sign up for the company’s NFL Sunday Ticket SuperFan package will be able to watch live NFL games on their iPhone during the upcoming season. iPhone 3GS overheating?
The new iPhones are fast, but along with that speed seems to have come a temperature increase when running processor-intensive applications. According to some reports, the heat has caused phone cases discolor; however, after investigation, people have found the discoloration to be more than likely from the heat causing protective cases to rub off their color on the iPhone. Still, some iPhone owners are concerned about their phones running hot and becoming damaged.

Datawind bringing UbiSurfer, PocketSurfer3 to the US
Remember Datawind's PocketSurfer and PocketSurfer2 handheld internet devices? Ever see one out in the wild on this side of the pond? Well, Datawind is hoping that it'll have better luck with its new PocketSurfer3 and UbiSurfer devices, which are both now apparently officially on track for a US release. The PocketSurfer3 (pictured above) is a fairly modest update to the PocketSurfer2, with it adding an improved screen and updated UI and, most perhaps importantly, a lower $249 price tag that also includes a year of free cellular usage (up to 30 hours a month). Google's Eric Schmidt to leave Apple board?
The Guardian is reporting that Google's CEO, Eric Schmidt, is soon going to discuss his future (if there can be such a thing) on Apple's board. Schmidt, who is in Sun Valley, Idaho at a retreat with the world's most powerful media executives, also mentioned that the conflicts of interests had not yet been discussed with Apple.
"I'll talk to the Apple people," he told reporters on Thursday. "At the moment, there's no issue."
The US Trade Commision is investigating possible conflicts alongside fellow Google/Apple Board member Arthur Levinson.

Crucial prepping fast notebook SSD line
Crucial this afternoon said it should have a major update to its solid-state drive line later this month. The 2.5-inch M225 series will use more up to date multi-level cell (MLC) storage and a new memory controller that significantly improves speed. Estimates put the peak performance of the fastest, 256GB drive at 250MB per second for data reads and 200MB per second for writes.

RAID Monitor 3 adopts AppleRAID, new interface
Squashed Software, formerly Maza Digital, says it has released RAID Monitor 3, a major update to its RAID status utility. The app performs background tracking of drive errors, which are then passed on to administrators through alert messages. Version 3 has been entirely rewritten, and redesigned with a new interface.

The other day, whilst sitting in the waiting room of a doctor's office, awaiting the inevitable bad news to come down the pipeline (you're dead, you're dying, no that rash can't be treated), I attempted to do something daring with my iPhone 3GS. Palm Pre sales still strong?
Pacific Crest analyst James Faucette today said that Palm Pre sales are still healthy over a month after the phone launched. Referring to his own checks, he estimates that about 40,000 of the multi-touch phones are now shipping each week and that the numbers could hold through at least August. If all those recently unveiled sample shots from Panasonic's Lumix DMC-GH1 have left you wanting more, you're in luck. The kids at Digital Photography Review have got their hands on the thing and have been kind enough to give us an extensive review. BlackBerry Onyx with optical trackball leaks out
Looks like RIM's getting serious about optical trackballs -- first the Curve 8520 ditched the spinner and now it looks like the Onyx has been upgraded as well. That's pretty much just as we've all expected ever since we first laid eyes on this 3G mashup of the Bold and Curve 8900, and we're pretty stoked about it, since we find optical trackballs to be pretty great. Staff Pick: Checksum
We recently wrote a small article on how to run a checksum routine on files as an extra verification against file corruption or incorrect file download. The way to check this is to run a simple "openssl" terminal command for a specific message digest routine (SHA1, MD5, etc). For people who need to run checksums on either multiple files or very frequently, "Checksum" is a perfect utility for this.

New Cradlepoint firmware turns MiFi into -- wait for it -- a 3G WiFi router
You might imagine that Cradlepoint's feeling a bit of heat since Novatel released its fantastic MiFi series, since the whole idea behind Cradlepoint's gear is to turn 3G modems into WiFi access points. It's cool, though, Cradlepoint managed to find a tricky angle: you can't charge the MiFi and have WiFi enabled at the same time! Credit Suisse raises Apple performance forecast
Apple should do better than forecast in its June quarter results, slated to be revealed July 21st, says Credit Suisse analyst Bill Shope. The company is expected to post $8.14 billion in revenue, producing $1.13 in earnings per share. Fortunes Global 500: Apple verbessert sich um 84 Plätze
Fortune hat eine neue Aufstellung der "Global 500" veröffentlicht, in der die 500 weltweit größten (bzw. umsatzstärksten) Unternehmen zu finden sind. The Guardian is reporting that Google's CEO, Eric Schmidt, is going to discuss his future (if there can be such a thing) on Apple's board. Schmidt, who is is Sun Valley Idaho with an exclusive guest list of the world's most powerful media executives are gathered for a retreat, also mentioned that the conflicts of interests had not yet been discussed with Apple.

Bundesrat winkt Internetzensurgesetz durch: Inkrafttreten am 1. August
Der Bundesrat hat in seiner heutigen Plenarsitzung darauf verzichtet, den Vermittlungsausschuss wegen des umstrittenen Internetzensurgesetzes anzurufen. Es kann nun aller Voraussicht nach planmäßig am 1. August in Kraft treten. Zugangsprovider wie Manitu, die die verfassungsmäßigen Grundrechte nicht übergehen wollen, können sich der Umsetzung noch sechs Monate widersetzen. Danach wird ein Bußgeld von bis zu 50.000 Euro fällig.

Am 21. Juli 2009 erscheint das Standardwerk "Duden – Die deutsche Rechtschreibung" in 25., völlig neu bearbeiteter und erweiterter Auflage. Für alle, die sich auch beim Verfassen und Bearbeiten von Texten via Smartphone auf den Duden verlassen möchten, wird "erstmals" eine Fassung für iPhone und iTouch angeboten. Wie sich diese Fassung zur seit September bzw. One of the main criticisms about MLC-based SSDs is the limited lifetime of the memory chips: 10,000 writing cycles. Of course, this should give you years of proper operation, however, considering the premium price tag, one would have expected a bit more time. Samsung Unveils a Native USB2 HD
Samsung unveiled a rather special 1.8" HD:
It offers 250 GB of storage space, this is not a huge achievement for a 1.83 HD, however it does not sport any PATA or SATA interface, but directly a USB2 interface, a native one. The controller of the native USB2 has been integrated in the PCB of the HD, as shown on photos. Of course the size does not follow the standard defined for 1.8" HD, so this device will most likely be dedicated to external HD models.

Sony Vaio W hands-on roundup
Looks like our friends across the pond were among the lucky few to get a their hands on Sony's Vaio W netbook -- that still feels weird to write -- and the big takeaway here is that despite its size, the 10.1-inch, 1366 x 768 resolution screen is gorgeous. As for video, though, it's still an Atom-powered portable with integrated Intel GMA graphics, meaning smooth HD is more or less out of the question. The good news if it pans out, however, is that Sony will likely offer a 2GB RAM update, which should help out a bit. Faster than the light, Gizmodo published the photo of a screen capture illustrating Google Chrome OS. Considering that it does not show anything new, one can not conclude if it is a fake or a true info.
For sure any leaks in the development of Chrome OS will be tracked and deeply analyzed, a bit like any piece of secret information related to a reported Apple product. Let's see if Google can develop an OS with a better success and adoption than its first trial, Android, dedicated to mobile phones.

A day earlier than expected, Microsoft has launched its third edition of Silverlight and its SDK. HP Mini 110 netbook gets 1366 x 768 display option
HP's Mini 110 netbook already had quite a bit going for it as it is, including a fair number of configuration options, but it looks like HP has now sweetened the deal even further by adding a 1366 x 768 display option. That upgraded screen is also thankfully the same anti-glare type of display that's been previously available with the lower res, and it'll set you back a fairly reasonable $30 on top of the base $329.99 price for the XP-based netbook (it's not currently available for the Mi Edition Mini).
