Apple updates firmware of new MacBook Pros to allow 3.0GB SATA speed
Remember last week's brouhaha about the new MacBook Pros only being able to connect to SSDs at SATA 1.5Gbs (as opposed to SATA II) speeds? Apple has addressed this issue in a firmware update (direct link) released today.
Notably, Apple says the following:
MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.7 addresses an issue reported by a small number of customers using drives based on the SATA 3Gbps specification with the June 2009 MacBook Pro. While this update allows drives to use transfer rates greater than 1.5Gbp

Black Wii, blue controllers spotted in the wild, behind glass
We've already seen both the black (or kuro) Wii and blue Wii remote and nunchuck in the form of promotional photos, but it looks like both braved the trip to this past weekend's World Hobby Fair, where they were on display for all to see, but not touch. MacBook Pro: SATA wieder mit 3.0 Gbps
Letzte Woche wurde bekannt, dass die neuen Macbook Pros mit 13 und 15 Zoll im Gegensatz zu ihren Vorgängermodellen nur eine SATA-Geschwindigkeit von 1.5 Gbps unterstützen. Dies wird nun durch ein Firmware-Update behoben.

Apple released a firmware update for the iMac (iMac EFI Firmware 1.4 Updates) aiming to fix a bug experienced by owners of the Radeon HD 4870-based iMac:

T-Mobile, Verizon set to offer Android-based Motorola phones this year
Details are still a little light on this one, but The Wall Street Journal is reporting that both T-Mobile and Verizon will be offering Android-based phones from Motorola before the end of the year, according to "people familiar with the matter." While the Verizon phone is still a bit iffy, the T-Mobile offering seems to almost certainly be the Motorola Morrision which, as you can see above, is already pretty well acquainted with T-Mo branding. Apple Fixes the 1.5 Gb/s Bug Affecting the New MacBook Pro
Apple released a Firmware update aiming to fix the issue faced by the owners of the new MacBook Pro models, limiting the transfer speed of the sata interface to 1.5 Gb/s inteaded of 3 Gb/s.
MacBook Pro EFI Firmware Update 1.7 addresses an issue using drives based on the SATA 3Gbps specification with the MacBook Pro introduced in June 2009. This update allows drives to use transfer rates greater than 1.5Gbps, however Apple has not qualified or offered these drives for Mac portable computers, and their use remains unsupported. All previous and current Apple portables with a SATA drive interface include a SATA 1.5Gbps hard drive.

Is Apple quietly changing the "iPhone 3G S" to the "iPhone 3GS" ?
"iPhone 3G S" is an uncharacteristically awkward name for an Apple product. Do you pause between the G and the S? How do you make it plural? Is it iPhones 3G S iPhone 3Gs S or.. you get the picture. In the logo, there is also the question of whether or not the "S" is capitalized (it is certainly smaller), or is it lower case like the iPod touch.
In today's Apple press release, Apple switched up the language and is now calling the hit device the "iPhone 3GS".

Disney Netpal hands-on (with video!)
We got a quick look Disney's little Netpal Eee PC rebadge, and found our not-too-high expectations slightly exceeded by the fairly slick skin Disney has slapped on top of XP. The Netpal platform is really Disney's primary contribution here, since the computer underneath is vanilla Eee PC other than the fairly stylish "boy" and "girl" skinning job. The shell, however, is a locked down environment that allows parents to white list web sites and email addresses for kids to access, along with a list of allowable apps -- kids aren't restricted to just Disney's set of experiences, little Bobby can master PowerPoint in between play dates if his parents don't mind. Ballmer apologizes for letting slip wrong Natal release date

Einigung bei GEMA-Gebühren für USB-Sticks
Die Importeure von Speichermedien wie USB-Sticks und SD-Karten haben sich mit den Verwertungsgesellschaften auf eine Urheberrechtsabgabe geeinigt. ICANN hält ungefragte DNS-Weiterleitungen für gefährlich
Die ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) hat die ungefragten DNS-Weiterleitungen von immer mehr Providern kritisiert, wie Heise Online berichtet. 750,000 iPhones sold over the weekend? (Update: 1 million)
The iPhone 3G S had a solid start this week by anyone's standards. Gene Munster and his crew were out trying to put demographic numbers on the long lines of people waiting for iPhones. According to Apple 2.0, this is what he came up with:
750,000 iPhones. Munster estimates that Apple sold about 750,000 iPhones over the three-day weekend, 50% more than his initial prediction (500,000) but 25% less than the 1 million iPhone 3Gs Apple sold on launch last July. It took Apple 74 days to sell 1 million first-generation iPhone and three days to sell 1 million units of the iPhone 3G.
Shrinking windfall. Among the 256 customers surveyed, 28% were switching carriers to AT&T, down from 38% last year and 52% in 2007. AT&T’s iPhone windfall is shrinking.

Steve Jobs talks: Sez "Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning"
A familiar name graced today's Apple press release. A one Mr. Steve Jobs was quoted as saying “Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning,” “With over 50,000 applications available from Apple’s revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.”
We're not oblivious to the fact that people quoted in press releases rarely write what they are quoted as saying, but it is still significant that Apple has put Mr. Jobs on the tag line, rather than Phil Schiller or Tim Cook.
Oh, and Apple sold a million iPhones this weekend (same as 3G last year but in 8 countries compared to last year's 22) and had 6 million 3.0 software downloads and now has 50,000 apps in the App Store. Full press

Apple charts iPhone capabilities.
Apple posted a new KB article on Friday outlining the features that each version of the iPhone supports. We'd add that jailbreaking an iPhone/3G gives you perfectly acceptable, though unsupported, video options.

Die Hacker des Dev-Teams stellen in ihrem Blog eine Software zum Freischalten des iPhone-Betriebssystems für iPhone 2G und iPhone 3G bereit, dass es ermöglicht iPhone-Apps zu installieren, die im App Store nicht angeboten werden. Bull stellt Supercomputer-Reihe mit Hybridkonzept vor
Bull hat mit "Bullx" eine neue Reihe an Supercomputern vorgestellt. Mit ihr will das Unternehmen im Bereich "Extreme Computing" weltweit einer der drei führenden Anbieter und in Europa sogar die Nummer eins werden. Studie: Mobilfunkprovider müssen bis 2011 neue Geschäftsmodelle entwickeln
Laut einer Studie des Beratungsunternehmens A.T. Kearney sinken die Mobilfunktarife voraussichtlich 2011 unter die technischen Erstellungskosten von Mobilfunkminuten von ungefähr 8,8 Cent. Die Marge der Mobilfunkanbieter, die heute durchschnittlich noch rund 16 Prozent beträgt, würde damit auf Null sinken. Schon 2012 müsste ein Anbieter theoretisch sieben Prozent pro Handygespräch draufzahlen. Laut der Berater könnten Mobilfunkunternehmen ihr Geschäft künftig nur mit Kooperationsmodellen profitabel gestalten.

No Comodore 64 Emulator for the iPhone
The website Manomio reports how and why Apple has refused to grant access to the AppStore for a Commodore 64 emulator.
While being 100% compatible with the iPhone, the application has been rejected from the AppStore, because in the SDK there is small lines indicating that it is not allowed to develop an application aiming to execute/decode/recover other code. It is different for the game Sonic from SEGA, a game emulator available on the AppStore. Indeed, the ROM for Sonic is included in the application and has been tested as such. Another reason why such emulator, which would be able to get games (in other words codes) from unreliable sources has been rejected, is also linked to security issues. We can't fault 'em for trying, but at the end of the day Kodak's EasyShare S730 is just another vanilla digital photo frame. A familiar name graced today's Apple press release. A one Mr. Steve Jobs was quoted as saying “Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning,” “With over 50,000 applications available from Apple’s revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.”
We're not oblivious to the fact that people quoted in press releases rarely write what they are quoted as saying, but it is still significant that Apple has put Mr. Jobs on the tag line, rather than Phil Schiller or Tim Cook.

“Motion Tracking User Interface” nennt sich die Technik, mit der Apple Gestensteuerung auf Mac OS X bringen will. 2007 reichte Apple ein entsprechendes Patent ein, das nun veröffentlicht wurde. The iPhone 3G S had a solid start this week by anyone's standards. Gene Munster and his crew were out trying to put demographic numbers on the long lines of people waiting for iPhones. According to Apple 2.0, this is what he came up with:
750,000 iPhones. Munster estimates that Apple sold about 750,000 iPhones over the three-day weekend, 50% more than his initial prediction (500,000) but 25% less than the 1 million iPhone 3Gs Apple sold on launch last July. Der Bundesbeauftragte für den Datenschutz Peter Schaar kritisiert die Überwachung von Mitarbeitern und vermutet einen regen Informationsaustausch von Sicherheitsabteilungen großer Unternehmen. "Die Überwachung von Mitarbeitern ist eine sehr weit verbreitete Praxis", sagte Schaar gegenüber dem Berliner Tagesspiegel. Ein Indiz dafür sei der starke Absatz von so genannter Spionagesoftware, die angeblich der Wartung der EDV diene. Kodak to retire Kodachrome film
Kodak this morning said it would soon phase out its longstanding Kodachrome film, putting an end to a significant era of film photography. The company says it plans to end the 74-year production as sales of the classic film now make up less than one percent of its film camera business, which itself is in the minority at Kodak. While being in USA, I decided to visit the local Apple Store on Saturday, expecting to have more time to chat with Apple Genius and specialists, while enjoying the iPhone 3G S. Well, I was wrong, deeply wrong:

AT&T und Apple entschuldigen sich für verspätete iPhone-3G-S-Aktivierung

Symantec hat bei der Nachverfolgung von Phishing-Attacken auf Twitter, falsche, mit einem Wurm infizierte Einladungen als Ursache ausgemacht. Vor den App-Store-Prüfern sind alle gleich - die einen mehr, die anderen weniger. Während der eher mäßige Mega-Drive-Emulator von Sega gleich zweimal (Sonic the Hedgehog, Golden Axe) grünes Licht bekommen hat, wurde ein sehr vielversprechender C64-Emulator abgelehnt - obwohl die Entwickler sich im Vorfeld um alle notwendigen Rechte an Spielen und das C64-ROM gekümmert hatten.

Weltweiter PC-Absatz sinkt im ersten Quartal um 8,2 Prozent
Im ersten Quartal 2009 sanken die Verkaufszahlen für PCs weltweit von 72,3 Millionen Stück im Vorjahreszeitraum auf 66,5 Millionen. Das entspricht einem Rückgabg von 8,2 Prozent. Gegenüber dem vierten Vierteljahr 2008 beträgt der Rückgang sogar 14,4 Prozent. Laut den Marktforschern von iSuppli ist das der größte Einbruch seit sieben Jahren.

Steve Jobs: Liver Transplant Confirmed
According to the Wall Street Journal, Steve Jobs had a liver transplant 2 months ago. The graft seemed to have been a success and Steve Jobs to be recovering perfectly as he is expected to return to work on schedule later this month. Standalone Blu-ray Player for 50 USD in 2010!?
According to Taiwanese manufacturers the price of standalone Blu-ray players might fall to 50 USD in 2010. such decrease might be linked to cheaper components, especially the reading head, representing today almost 50% of the cost of components while the decoding chips counts for 25%. If this turns true, it could really boost sales of players, but not necessarily those of BD movies. Indeed, the latest will have to be cheaper in order to convince customers to invest to switch their video collection. In addition, one should not forget that in 2010 we should finally see arriving a true full HD online offer that could be a strong competitor on the BD media-based movie market, especially with the cost of disc-based storage HDs becoming cheaper every days.

iPhone: Reminder About Push-associated Power Usage
Some users have been complaining that the battery life of their iPhone 3G was dramatically reduced following installation of iPhone OS 3.0. It seems that the firmware is draining more resources when the Push option is activated. It seems that the function does not enter sleep mode between the refreshing time set every 15 or 30 minutes, you should compare with manual mode too. This power draining issue was already present with the OS 2.0, but it seems that OS 3.0 did not really improve it.

Intel X-25 M SSD to Offer 320 GB Storage Space by End of 2009
Intel expects to start producing a X-25 M SSD model with 320 GB of storage space, thanks to memory chips engraved at 34 nm. Intel has to face a strong competition on the high-end SSD market, and needs to release new products with higher performance level and/or larger capacity to remain among the leading manufacturers on the market. Of course, the price should be aligned with performance, but it would then make the current high-end model offering 160 GB cheaper, and maybe finally affordable by more customers.

Quanta to Become Exclusive Apple Notebook Models Manufacturer
According to Digitimes, Quanta might soon be the exclusive manufacturer for all Apple notebook models from the second part of the year. Just to reming you, Apple was having part of its notebook models manufactured by Asustek, while it definitely dropped its partnership with Compal, most probably following the motherboard-killer screw issue affecting 17" and 15" PowerBook .

Firmware 3.0 by the DevTeam iPhone Almost Ready
The DevTeam iPhone released 2 software tools for the Firmware 3.0 over the week-end:
REDSN0W is a tool to jailbreak an iPhone Edge or 3G even loaded with the Firmware 3.0. It does not work with the iPhone 3G S yet.
PwnageTool is the tool that let's you do similar things by modifying the 3.0 update file prior its installation.
For SIM unlocking, it only works with the iPhone Edge (2G), but not with the 3G or 3G S models.

Meizo CEO: current M8 upgradeable to 3G, estimated cost about $190 to $220
We know, we know, it's gonna be awfully hard to part with the comfort of your current beloved Meizu M8, but trust us, change can be good. We've already heard reports of an Android-centric UI refresh, and now company CEO J. Wong has chimed in to outline a tentative upgrade plan for the upcoming M8 3G.
