Scientists develop artificial mouth to study complexities of chewing, digesting

Sure, we've seen a set of robotic chompers before, but a team of scientists led by one Gaëlle Arvisenet is taking artificial mouths to a new plateau. In a study set to be released in next week's Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, researchers report on the "design of an artificial mouth that mimics the first vital steps of human digestion -- chewing, saliva release and the initial breakdown of food." Apple gets more serious in India
Apple’s looking pretty serious at extending its reach in the world's expanding markets, planning a retail store in Beijing, China and continuing to expand its relationships in India, putting its force behind the launch of an array of 60 ‘iStores’ with Reliance Retail in India.
Reliance Retail today told India’s Economic Times that it plans to launch 60 Apple Premium Reseller stores across the country by 2011.
The company this week launched its fourth iStore in Jaipur. CEO Ajay Baijal said the shop is going to stock the entire range of Apple products for both the professional and consumer segments.

Guitar Hero: On Tour to land in Nintendo DS bundle this June

There's not a lot of details on this one just yet, but Activision CEO Mike Griffith has dropped word in an earnings conference call that the company's upcoming Guitar Hero: On Tour game / controller combo will not only be released on its own this June, but in a new Nintendo DS bundle as well. No word on a price, unfortunately, nor is there any indication that the DS itself will be undergoing any Guitar Hero-inspired changes, but it seems like those little details should be making themselves known soon enough.

Toshiba aims to deliver laptops with Cell-based graphics this year

Man kills neighbor over missing PS3

UGOBE "shocked and appalled" by destruction of Pleo at Maker Faire

Jugendschutzgesetz gegen "Killerspiele" verabschiedet
Der Deutsche Bundestag hat gestern den umstrittenen Regierungsentwurf zur Änderung des Jugendschutzgesetzes abgesegnet. Gegen die Stimmen der Opposition wurde damit eine Gesetzesnovelle verabschiedet, die vor allem für so genannte "Killerspiele" neue Richtlinien mit sich bringt. So werden etwa die Kriterien, nach denen Videos und Spiele mit Gewaltinhalten als jugendgefährdend auf dem Index landen, erweitert. Die Novelle legt zudem fest, dass die Altersbeschränkungs-Aufkleber auf CDs und DVDs vergrößert werden müssen. Auf diese Weise will die Regierung erreichen, dass die Kennzeichnung künftig auf den ersten Blick ins Auge fällt.

Coder Rainer Brockerhoff has released a fresh update to Quay, a Dock extender for Mac OS X Leopard. Apple’s .Mac service may see a significant upgrade, with new features set for introduction beside the launch of iPhone Software 2.0 in June.
Multiple reports this week have claimed Apple’s preparing to introduce ‘push’ email support to its subscription service, but it appears there’s even more improvement planned.

Apple and Google are testing a way to link YouTube with the iTunes Store, offering links to video available for sale on iTunes beside selected YouTube clips.
Apple has been experimenting with strategies to link iTunes up with social networking websites, and offers a referral scheme to those who want to link their sites up with the service.
Early reports suggest the new system’s in testing right now, as the iTunes links are appearing beside only a handful of YouTube clips (such as one from Kanye West), and the move is only visible to US users at this time.

Elektronikhandelskette Best Buy kommt nach Europa
Der US-amerikanische Elektronikriese Best Buy hat für 2,1 Milliarden Dollar einen 50-Prozent-Anteil an dem britischen Mobilfunkspezialisten Carphone Warehouse, der Muttergesellschaft des deutschen Telekommunikationsanbieters The Phone House, übernommen. Im Zuge der Transaktion haben die beiden Konzerne ein Gemeinschaftsunternehmen gegründet, mit dem Ziel, europaweit zu expandieren und das bestehende Filialnetz auszubauen. Freenet laufen die Kunden davon
Das Telekommunikations- und Internetunternehmen Freenet musste im ersten Quartal 2008 einen Kunden- und Gewinnrückgang hinnehmen. Auch der Umsatz gab nach. Die Kundenzahl sank von 12,68 Millionen im Vergleichszeitraum des Vorjahres auf 11,36 Millionen. Hier habe sich das "latente Zerschlagungsszenario rund um das Unternehmen" negativ ausgewirkt, so Freenet. Webdesign-Tool Freeway in neuer Version
Softpress Systems und Application Systems Heidelberg haben die Verfügbarkeit von Freeway 5.1 bekanntgegeben. Dupont plant Massenproduktion von OLED-Displays
Dupont und Dainippon Screen Manufacturing wollen im Rahmen einer strategischen Allianz Produktionsverfahren zur Massenfertigung von OLED-Displays entwickeln. Als Schwerpunkt ihrer gemeinsamen Arbeit nannten beide Unternehmen die Optimierung von Fertigungsprozessen und die Verbesserung der Maschinen, mit denen die organischen Leuchtdioden (OLEDs) auf den Bildschirm aufgedruckt werden. Damit sollen vor allem die derzeit noch sehr hohen Produktionskosten für OLED-Displays gesenkt werden. Dupont und Dainippon beabsichtigen aber auch die Herstellung großer Displays, die den bei LCD-Fernsehern gängigen Bildschirmdiagonalen entsprechen.

Freenet verzeichnet Gewinn- und Umsatzeinbruch
Freenet hat im ersten Quartal 2008 aufgrund der stark gestiegenen Abschreibungen ein rückläufiges EBIT zu verzeichnen. So reduzierte sich das EBIT auf 26,2 Millionen Euro - ein Minus von 6,8 Prozent im Vergleich zum Vorquartal und von 48,4 Prozent zum ersten Quartal 2007. Davon entfielen 25,7 Millionen Euro auf das Segment Mobilfunk, 7,2 Millionen Euro aufs Hosting und -6,7 Millionen Euro auf den Bereich Festnetzgeschäft mit Breit- und Schmalband, Portalgeschäft, B2B-Services sowie den Holdingaktivitäten. Der Gewinn vor Steuern (EBT) lag mit 24,5 Millionen Euro 12,5 Prozent unter dem des Vorquartals.

RealNetworks plant Abspaltung seiner Spielesparte
RealNetworks hat die Abspaltung seiner Casual-Games-Sparte angekündigt. "RealNetworks war einer der Pioniere der Casual-Games-Industrie seit der Einführung von RealArcade 2001", sagte Rob Glaser, CEO von RealNetworks. Apple Throws in the Towel in iPod Canada Class Action
Apple decided to offer an agreement to stop the process of a class action launched in Canada by a group of iPod owners complaining about a short lifetime of iPod battery. After one year of usage, the capacity of iPod 1, 2 and 3G batteries were dramatically reduced, and the overall experience of the iPod strongly affected. The group of iPod owners were suing Apple for having misinformed users about battery performances.
To avoid this legal action to go one step further, Apple agreed to offer to all Canadian iPod owners asking for compensation, a 45 CAD coupon only valid on the Apple Store. If it will cost Apple some money, at least it will most likely be entirely recovered via the online store.

XBMC beta 0.5 Released

A shot email to report about my "currently" favorite application: XBMC !
It quickly became THE Media Center application on Mac OSX, and has just been released in beta 0.5 including support for Apple Remote.
This application is derived from the Xbox 1, but has been nicely ported to the Mac with a "xTV"-like skin similar to FrontRow.
Even if it is not as intuitive as FrontRow, it features so many parameters and features that it is worth every minutes spent in learning and discovering how it works!

Im November 2006, also nur ein Jahr nach Vorstellung des Wii-Controllers, hatte Apple ein Patent auf ein dreidimensionales Steuerungsgerät eingereicht. Dell to replace all European Vostro 1310 and 1510 keyboards

Cablevision joins the wireless party, plans to cover NYC with WiFi

Wii Fit feet-on: feeling the burn, inadequate

So Nintendo showed up at our place today with a Wii Fit -- and an accompanying personal trainer to crack the whip and make sure our half hour of intro exercises and fitness games burned a sufficient amount of calories.
