Rumor: iPhone "4S" prototypes with A5 chips being tested by game developers
Earlier today 9to5Mac reported on a prototype Mac Pro that might be in the offing, and now the blog also has word that iPhone 4s outfitted with Apple's A5 chips have been seeded with developers at certain "high-level gaming outfits."
As noted in the post, these prototypes are not necessarily indicative of what we'll see in September, which is when the next-generation iPhone is expected to appear. Instead, these are devices that are designed to let the developers prepare their game titles for the iPhone 5. The source of the information called the device an iPhone 4S, although that name

AT&T officially files T-Mobile merger with FCC
AT&T on Thursday said its planned buyout of T-Mobile for $39 billion has now been officially sent out for FCC approval in order to get T-Mobile's wireless licenses. With the deal approved by both companies' Boards of Directors, the FCC is the only potential problem with the conclusion of the merger, with an FCC official saying earlier some changes will need to be made. As such, AT&T said the merger would result in 97.3 of Americans to eventually have access to high-speed wireless services rather than the 95 percent initially estimated back in March.

News.me for iPad launches today as a paid social magazine
News.me, the latest iPad news reader, wants to outdo apps like Flipboard and Zite by being "smarter" about the content it delivers. The app is free, and you can use it for a week, but after that it is US$0.99 a week or $34.99 a year.

Apple's cloud music service ready for launch
A report out of Reuters claims Apple is set to launch its online music storage service. According to the report, the service allows users to store their iTunes content in the cloud and access it from an internet-connected device. Apple has yet to secure the licenses for the new service and is in the process of negotiating with the music labels before the service's big launch. No word on whether changes to MobileMe are included with this upcoming launch.
Apple will reportedly beat Google to the punch and launch its music storage and streaming service ahead of the search giant. Hints of Google's foray into music streaming have appeared in the latest builds of Android, but the rollout of this service is reportedly delayed.

Reuters: Apple set to launch cloud-based music service ahead of Google
It's the rumor that wouldn't die, and Reuters is now reporting that Apple is finally set to launch a cloud-based music service -- presumably putting its massive North Carolina data center to some real work at long last. Details are still fairly light beyond that, but Reuters says that Apple's service will actually launch ahead of Google's similar cloud-based option, which it reports is now "stalled," citing "several people familiar with both companies plans." Greenpeace takes Apple to task for data center pollution
As part of a report (PDF) rating several high-tech companies, Greenpeace has made public a critical stance of Apple's cloud-based environmental impact. The "clean energy index" rating for Apple's data services is just 6.7 percent, versus the likes of 21 percent for Twitter, 36.4 percent for Google and 55.9 percent for Yahoo. Apple was also given a "coal intensity" rating of 54.5 percent, in theory making it the most intense polluter amongst the group because of relatively high power consumption versus its coal power dependence.

Leak: Apple's cloud music locker finished before Google's
Multiple sources claimed Thursday that Apple has already completed its rumored cloud media locker. The service would let iTunes users store music online to stream it back as long as they have a fast Internet connection. Apple still hadn't finished getting licenses, Reuters understood, but the service was technically ready.

Next-generation Mac Pro rumored to feature rack mount, stackable drives
If a rumor posted on 9 to 5 Mac has any validity, the Mac Pro may be the next member of the Apple family to receive an updated design.
The top-of-the-line Mac Pro has been somewhat neglected in the design department, as the current design debuted with the Power Mac G5 in June of 2003. Since then, the Mac Pro has received processor, RAM, and storage updates, but the exterior design is basically the same. 9 to 5 Mac is reporting that a Mac Pro prototype is now in testing that features a narrower (just about 5 inches wide) and shorter (about 19 inches) design that could fit into a standard server rack.

iriver Story HD e-reader hits the FCC, US retailers next?
We haven't heard much about iriver's Story HD e-reader since it quite literally landed in our laps at CES back in January, but it looks like it might now finally be nearing a US launch. Chrome OS netbooks may be sold as subscription PCs
A rumor floated by a historically accurate source on Thursday suggested Google may take a very different business model than conventional PCs. They would still be available for a one-time sale online but would instead be available for a subscription of $10 to $20 per month, likely tied into a corporate Google Apps account. The deal explained to Neowin would have Google provide new machines and repairs for as long as the subscription was active.

Apple has the "least green" data centers
Apple has come in last place among a list of tech companies in the latest Greenpeace tech report How Dirty is Your Data? [PDF]. While Apple has made some pretty big strides over the last few years in trying to eliminate environmentally unfriendly chemicals from their products, Apple placed last in this list due to its heavy reliance on coal power at its data centers.

DCM creates iFund-like $100m A-Fund pool for Android

iPhone said to be tops in worldwide revenue
Pretty impressive. The young upstart iPhone (just about 4 years old) has just dethroned Nokia in revenue. That's the word from Strategy Analytics today, as the research firm looked at mobile phone revenues in January through March.
Nokia has been a consistent revenue leader around the world by generally selling less expensive feature phones. Nokia recently joined forces with Microsoft and is adopting Windows Phone 7 software for its smartphones.

Verizon CFO suggests next iPhone will be a 'global device'
We're guessing it wasn't on the company's agenda for its earnings call earlier today, but Verizon CFO Fran Shammo let slip one other interesting iPhone tidbit in addition to its news of 2.2 million iPhone 4 activations. Here's what he said:

iOS tracking file a bug or code oversight, report claims
The controversial location history file in iOS may simply be a mistake on Apple's part, says Daring Fireball's John Gruber. Citing an unidentified source, Gruber suggests that consolidated.db is actually intended to be a cache for location data. The data should be culled automatically, but iOS is thought to be leaving it alone because of a bug or a simple oversight on Apple's part.

Die Zeiten für Flip sind vorbei, aber das heisst nicht, dass sich andere Hersteller noch auf das Format stürzen. Apple confirms LTE iPhone is at least one generation away
During its earnings conference call, Apple re-confirmed it is not adopting the current generation of LTE chipsets in its iPhone handsets. According to Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook, Apple would have to redesign the iPhone to accommodate the first generation LTE chipsets used in smartphones such as the Verizon Wireless' HTC Thunderbolt. Apple is not willing to make that concession at this point and will wait for future generation LTE hardware before it adopts this 4G technology.
For iPhone fans, this means an LTE-enabled smartphone from Apple is at least a generation away. The iPhone 5 may hit this year, but it will support current 3G technology and possibly the 4G HSPA+ technology that AT&T is rolling out

iOS more than double Android's share in Europe
Apple's overall mobile platform lead is larger in Europe than it is in the US, comScore found Thursday. The iPhone tracking fiasco and what you can do about it

It made quite a splash yesterday when a pair of researchers, Alasdair Allan and Pete Warden, from O'Reilly Media announced the "iPhone tracking software" the duo had "discovered hidden on the phones." Verizon iPhone selling faster than the HTC Thunderbolt
Earlier this month, a research report from BTIG analyst Walter Piecyk concluded that the HTC Thunderbolt was outselling the Verizon iPhone. This report was based on anecdotal evidence gathered from sales employees and their impressions of which handset was selling faster. Sen. Franken delivers inquiry letter to Jobs on iOS security
The unprotected location history file in iOS 4 has drawn attention from Minnesota senator Al Franken, says CNN. Franken has reportedly sent a two-page letter (PDF) to Apple CEO Steve Jobs, arguing that the file represents a potential security threat. Well, color me unsurprised.
Remember the TUAW post from Tuesday about M.I.C Gadget's iHub 2, which is a small 4-port USB hub that features a cool glowing Apple logo? In that post, M.I.C Gadget's iHub 2 looks like Apple lawsuit bait, I conjectured that it wouldn't take too long for Apple's legal team to mail out the cease and desist notice.
This morning, we received a number of emails from people who had ordered the iHub 2. The manufacturer has contacted them with the news that Apple has "warned" M.I.C Gadget to stop selling the device:

Analysts stay upbeat on Apple Q2 results
In the wake of Apple's second-quarter results, several financial analysts have weighed in on the company's performance. Gene Munster of Piper Jaffray has raised his price target for Apple stock, pushing it from $483 to $554. He describes the March quarter as a "monster," even though Apple has been struggling to keep up with iPad 2 shipments and might not reach equilibrium until "late in the June quarter." Verizon and AT&T combine to sell 5.8 million iPhones in Q1 2011
This morning Verizon released its quarterly earnings for Q1 2011. Verizon reports 'strong' Q1 earnings: $27 billion revenue, 2.2 million iPhone activations
Yesterday was AT&T's turn, and today it's Verizon revealing its earnings for the first quarter of 2011. The company has reported $27 billion in consolidated revenue from its wireless and wireline businesses, which is up 5.3 percent year over year (on a non-GAAP basis). Fueling that growth was 1.8 million net additions to its wireless customer base, which now totals 88.4 million customers (and 104 million connections), plus 207,000 net FiOS internet and 192,000 net FiOS TV additions, which bring those total customer bases to 4.3 million and 3.7 million, respectively. Nokia sees phone share drop to 29%, signs Microsoft deal
Nokia struggled on Thursday as it saw a drop both in its financials and its market share. Its operating profit dropped 35 percent year-to-year to the equivalent of $1.03 billion as a slight increase in smartphone shipments wasn't enough to offset steeper drops in its basic phone mix. Verizon adds 2.2 million iPhones in its first quarter
Verizon posted results on Thursday for its winter quarter that rode heavily on iPhone sales. It added a total of 1.8 million new customers, 906,000 of which were regular cellphone subscribers, but was propped up chiefly by 2.2 million iPhones being activated in the network. The carrier also disproved speculation that the HTC Thunderbolt was outselling the iPhone and noted that just 260,000 Thunderbolts had been activated in the two weeks the 4G phone was available.

PlayStation Network down for a long count, what's up Sony?
We've been hit by a big batch of dismayed tips from PlayStation gamers this morning, who are finding themselves unable to log in to the PlayStation Network (again). Sony's response has been to acknowledge there's a problem in the vaguest of terms -- "We're aware certain functions of PlayStation Network are down" -- and to promise an update on the situation as soon as it's available. Alas, that statement was issued over nine hours ago and there's still no word of either a rectification or an explanation for the outage. Bulletproof is a new game that's out on the App Store right now. The premise is interesting and a little macabre, as you're tasked with stopping bullets from a firing squad by touching in the right places on screen. I like it, actually. The action starts slow and eventually becomes pretty frantic. The simple, but effective, graphics keep you on your toes (or fingers, as the case may be).

Qualcomm meldet Umsatz- und Gewinnsteigerung

Apples Marktanteil in der Schweiz im 1. Quartal 2011 (IDC)
Laut IDG wurden im EMEA-Markt (Europa, Naher Osten und Afrika) im ersten Quartal 2011 9.6 Prozent weniger Computer verkauft — abgesetzt wurden demnach in den ersten drei Monaten des Jahres in dieser Region 24.1 Millionen Geräte. Osteuropa und Naher Osten wuchsen leicht, während die Absätze in West- und Mitteleuropa regelrecht eingebrochen sind.
In der Schweiz ging der Absatz gegenüber dem ersten Quartal von 2010 um 5.9 Prozent zurück — damit wurden laut IDG in den Monaten Januar, Februar und März 2011 485’669 Computer in der Schweiz verkauft. Sharp TV plant to make smartphone, tablet displays too
Sharp said Thursday that it was shifting some of the production at its second TV plant in Kameyama to smartphone and tablet displays. Both medium and small displays would be made side-by-side with TVs later this year. The development was coming along with a world-first use of new "oxide semiconductor material" for thin film transistor (TFT) LCDs that would shrink the transistors to allow much more light from a given pixel, leading to either a brighter mobile device display or lower power use for the same brightness.

Angepeilt wird 19nm-Technologie mit 8GB Kapazität, geht das Projekt schnell genug voran, würde das Joint Venture einen amtlichen Weltrekord halten. Und offenbar läuft alles gut: Die Produktion soll im zweiten Halbjahr starten, Prototypen sollen bereits dieses Quartal verfügbar sein. Mehr Speicher auf weniger Raum: immer gut. Nokia's Q1 2011: smartphone share down to 26 percent, 'more challenging' times ahead
Nokia has just published its first quarterly results in the era of its Microsoft partnership and things aren't looking too bright. Smartphone market share, which had been at 41 percent this time last year and 31 percent in January, has now dipped to 26 percent, while operating profits have taken a 17 percent tumble relative to last year. The company managed to ship one percent more phones in Q1 2011 than in Q1 2010, but its 108.5 million units was an 18 percent drop from last quarter's totals. SanDisk and Toshiba announce world's smallest NAND flash memory chips
20 nanometer manufacturing processes, you say? We say pshaw, be gone luddite. Sandisk and Toshiba just announced the latest product from their joint venture: a 19nm 64Gb (8GB) X2 memory chip; aka, the smallest NAND flash memory chip in the world. At least it will be when it hits production in the second half of the year. EMC verzeichnet Rekordergebnis im ersten Quartal
EMC hat im ersten Quartal 2011 einen Rekordumsatz von 4,6 Milliarden Dollar (3,2 Milliarden Euro) erwirtschaftet, 18 Prozent mehr als im Vorjahreszeitraum. iPad 2 now shipping in 1 to 2 weeks from online stores
It always pays to be patient.
While the iPad 2 had wait times of 4 to 5 weeks at launch, the devices are now shipping in 1 to 2 weeks from the U.S. online store. The ship times are consistent across all models, whether black, white, Verizon, AT&T, or with different storage capacities.
The new shipping times could be due to lower demand, but considering that it is still difficult to purchase an iPad 2 at many Apple Stores, the cause is probably Apple clearing up any production issues.

Japanese newspaper reports Apple picked Toshiba as sole LCD supplier
A Japanese newspaper report suggests Apple has chosen Toshiba as the sole supplier of its LCD displays for the iPhone. Earlier this year, a circulating rumor suggested Apple had invested US$1.2 billion in a Sharp-owned LCD production plant. The plant would go online in 2012 and provide Apple with an near-exhaustive supply of displays for its mobile devices. This latest report from Japan claims Apple has backed out of this venture, possibly due to an earthquake related disruption in Sharp's production.

New Blue Yeti Pro Mic stalking audio enthusiasts
Blue Microphones makes outstanding mics for musicians, podcasters and anyone else who needs to capture or transmit audio with great clarity and range. After using one of Blue's Yeti USB mics at Macworld Expo 2010, I bought one to improve my audio on TUAW TV Live and the TUAW Talkcast. That same mic has also been used for recording voiceovers, screencasts and a commemorative video, and it never fails to amaze me just how good the sound quality is.

iPad held 85% market share in 2010 according to ABI Research
ABI Research's 2010 analysis of the media tablet market reveals the iPad grabbed a respectable 85 percent market share. Trailing far behind the iPad was the Samsung Galaxy Tab with an eight percent market share and the Archos Internet tablets with a mere two percent market share. There three vendors accounted for 95 percent of all media tablets sold in 2010.
These figures are not surprising considering Apple's jump on the competition. Launched in early 2010, the iPad kicked off this tablet revolution and other manufacturers have struggled to catch up. Apple announces record revenue for 2nd quarter FY11
Ahead of today's 5pm conference call, Apple released its earnings report for the second quarter of fiscal 2011 (otherwise known as the first calendar quarter). Profit number: $5.99B in the quarter. Total revenue for the quarter is US$24.6 billion, versus 13.5B year-over-year. Earnings per diluted share comes in at $6.40, versus $3.33 last year. Forecasting $23B revenue for the next quarter.

20th Century Fox talks about the success of Angry Birds Rio
I attended an event called the LA App Show last night here in Santa Monica, CA, and saw seven demos of various apps that are seeing significant success on the App Store. Matt McMahon from 20th Century Fox was there, and while his company didn't publish the actual app in question, he's certainly seen plenty of success: he worked closely with Rovio on the creation of Angry Birds Rio, the movie tie-in that has nabbed 20 million downloads on the App Store in just 20 days of release, and has helped send the Rio animated movie to number one at the box office.

iTunes servers appear to be wonky today
It started with a few tweets and progressed to our own internal tests and it would appear as though Apple's iTunes servers are, at some level, not working properly. For me, it began with an all-too-familiar timeout while trying to update apps. Then I tried to download the currently-free Plastic Bullet app. Later, when we started testing it appears the issue has turned into a sign-in issue with authentication servers refusing the connection.

Countdown to the last few hours before The Cosmonaut stylus launch
If you're an artist and you like to paint with your iPad then you know how much nicer it can be to use a capacitive stylus rather then your finger. While there are already a number of styluses that work with iOS devices on the market, Studio Neat has decided there's room for one more. BET's 106 & Park app impresses with promotion and social network integration
There were a few interesting apps demonstrated at the LA App Show last night, but the one that most interested me was an app that Black Entertainment Television's Brandon Lucas showed off, the official app for the network's 106 & Park music video show. BET teamed up with developers Bottle Rocket to make it, and I don't think I've seen a more interesting combination of old school media (in this case, a popular cable network) and new school mobile programming.

Dark Horse Digital coming to iOS April 27
The wait is finally almost over, Dark Horse Digital will be releasing their iOS app on April 27! I love reading comics on the iPad, the form-factor and experience is perfect - in fact, I prefer it to paper comics. However, while Marvel, DC Comics and some other publishers have been adding more and more issues from their libraries to a number of applications such as Comixology; Dark Horse has been notably absent.

Greenwich, Conn., Apple Store closed temporarily due to flooding
A mishap at a Greenwich, Conn., Apple Store resulted in the activation of the sprinkler system and significant water damage to the building. A cleaning crew working Tuesday night accidentally dislodged a sprinkler head which activated the sprinkler system and fire alarm. Within minutes, the city's fire department responded to the call, but the main floor and two sub-basements were already flooded.
The store was closed and initially determined to be unfit for occupancy due to possible damage to the electrical wiring in the building. The building was deemed safe by Greenwich building inspectors on Wednesday, but remains closed indefinitely while Apple begins the arduous cleanup process. Store employees would not comment on the loss

Apple: 60 Millionen iPod touch verkauft (seit 2007)
In der Klageschrift von Apple gegen Samsung stehen neben vielen Anschuldigungen auch einige interessante Hintergrundinformationen. Apple kündigt Q2 2011 Conference Call offiziell für den 20. April an
Nachdem wir bereits vor guten zwei Wochen über die erwartete Telefonkonferenz zur Diskussion über die finanziellen Ergebnisse des zweiten Quartals 2011 berichtet hatten, kam nun heute die offizielle Bestätigung dazu von Apple in Form einer Pressemitteilung. Am Mittwoch kann man dann um 23 Uhr die Konferenz hier live mitverfolgen.Passend dazu hat Gene Munster heute errechnet, dass die Mac-Verkäufe dieses Quartal etwa 27% angestiegen sind, so sind sie alleine im März dank den neuen MacBook Pros um 47% angestiegen. Im Januar waren es 20% und im Februar 12%. Weiterhin sagt er voraus, dass am Mittwoch Verkäufe von etwa 3,6 bis 3,7 Millionen Macs im Quartal gemeldet werden.[

Studie: iOS erreicht 59% mehr Leute als Android
Laut einer neuen Studie von comScore aus den USA erreicht man mit iOS auf iPhone, iPod touch und iPad 59% mehr Personen als mit Android. Apple veröffentlicht Quartalszahlen: Bestes Nicht-Weihnachts-Quartal aller Zeiten
Wie bereits seit Tagen angekündigt und erwartet hat Apple heute die Quartalszahlen für das zweite Quartal 2011 veröffentlicht. So wurden in den 3 Monaten ganze 4,69 Millionen iPads, 18,65 Millionen iPhones, 3,76 Millionen Macs und 9,02 Millionen iPods verkauft. Roastie: der Toaster als Design-Tauchglocke

Der polnische Nachwuchsdesigner Mateusz Główka hat sich einen Klassiker vorgeknöpft und das mit bemerkenswertem Ergebnis: sein Toaster Roastie ist nicht nur ein echter Hingucker, das Gerät soll Brotscheiben auch mit unerreichter Gleichmäßigkeit rösten. Jedenfalls theoretisch, ist ja nur ein Konzept. Dessen Realisierung wir mit Spannung erwarten, genau wie Główkas Lösung für zwei oder vier Scheiben.

Apple hat in der Nacht die Quartalszahlen veröffentlicht und die haben es, wie nicht anders zu erwarten, in sich. 24,67 Milliarden Dollar Einnahmen kann Cupertino verbuchen, der Netto-Gewinn liegt bei 5,99 Milliarden Dollar. Im Vorjahresquartal lag der Gewinn "lediglich" 3,07 Milliarden Dollar. Knapp 60% des Umsatzes wurden außerhalb der USA erzielt. We never got around to reviewing the Atari 400 back in 1979, but it was probably for the best -- according to Technabob, the game console's membrane keyboard was more of a finger torturing tool. But if you dig this iconic design regardless, then you may consider Niyari's similar-looking chiclet keyboard from Japan. Sure, $148.55 is pretty steep for an otherwise ordinary USB peripheral, but some old schoolers may gladly pay for this much improved typing experience, albeit 32 years too late. Fisker Karma production slowly ramping up, first deliveries expected in June or July
The company is insisting it can't "really be interpreted as a delay" given that it's gone from prototype to production in just 37 months, but Fisker is now saying that the first all-electric Karma luxury vehicles will delivered to their owners sometime in June or July -- which you'll notice is neither late 2010 nor the first quarter of 2011, as had been promised. External voice box prototype helps cancer, stroke sufferers regain speech
A team of UK scientists has developed a headset that can bring voices back to those who have lost their speech due to injury, cancer, stroke, and other maladies. They hope the prototype -- which uses magnets positioned in the user's mouth or tongue -- will take the place of low-tech solutions like throat valves, which have the tendency to get clogged. When he or she speaks, changes to the magnets' movements are detected by the device, which associates specific facial movements with corresponding words (the device currently has a vocabulary of about 50). Samsung announces 'multi-proof' W200 Pocket Cam with 1080p recording
Cisco may not have seen a bright future in the pocket camcorder business, but it seems that Samsung would be to differ -- it's just announced its new W200 Pocket Cam, which it proudly boasts is "multi-proof." That means it will hold up in harsh conditions and keep on working underwater (up to three meters deep, at least), and capture some full 1080p video in the process. Apple beats estimates with Q2 earnings: $24.67 billion revenue, $5.99 billion profit
Apple just announced its earnings for the second quarter of the year, and it's once again beat estimates, with it reporting earnings of $6.40 a share, a total of $24.67 billion in revenue, and a net profit of $5.99 billion. As for the sales breakdown everyone's waiting for, Apple says it sold a whopping 18.6 million iPhones in the quarter (up 113 percent over the previous year, and ahead of estimates of 16 million), plus 4.69 million iPads (actually less than the expected 6.29 million, apparently due to supply issues), and 3.76 million Macs, which represents a 28 percent jump over the same quarter a year ago. Virgin Media to test 1.5Gbps broadband on London's Silicon Roundabout

iPad 2 shipping times drop to 1 to 2 weeks
US shipping times for the iPad 2 are continuing to decline, a check of Apple's online store shows. Orders are now going out in one to two weeks, having just Wednesday morning been listed as taking two to three weeks. As usual the estimate applies to all models, regardless of capacity or network support.

ABI: iPad claimed 85% of tablets in 2010, Galaxy Tab just 8%
A new look-back study from ABI Research on Wednesday gave Apple the lion's share of the tablet market for all of 2010. The iPad represented 85 percent of all tablets in the category and was well ahead of other rivals. Samsung's Galaxy Tab represented just eight percent where Archos managed just two percent; all others were just three percent combined.

RockMelt's social browser out for iPhone [U]
(Update: released, link below) RockMelt has revealed a new iPhone version of its browser that will synchronize with its desktop version. While it's not yet available from the App Store, the browser will sport the same Read Later option for saving websites to read at a more convenient time and gets Twitter and Facebook management tools. RadTech has announced that its line of Aero iPad 2 cases have started shipping. The form-fitting cover is constructed from a polyurethane material that is fully washable. When stored in the Aero case, an iPad's back is fully protected from light bumps and drops, while still providing access to all of the devices controls and dock connector. The Aero for iPad 2 is being offered in five colors, including clear, blue, pink, bronze, and black, at a price of $30. BlackBerry PlayBook to get desktop Mac sync in summer
RIM has responded to a query as to when the BlackBerry PlayBook will get support for Desktop Manager on Macs. A spokesman told CrackBerry that an update would come "this summer." News.me to launch on Thursday, says New York Times
News.me -- an anticipated new social news aggregrator -- should finally go live tomorrow, says a spokeswoman for the New York Times. The service and iPad app were originally intended to launch in late 2010, but missed the deadline, and the app was in fact only submitted to Apple about a month ago. The wait time is slightly unusual in that Apple has narrowed most approvals down to a matter of weeks.

Amazon Android tablet may be made by Samsung
On-off rumors of an Amazon-branded tablet were sparked again by a rumor that it had a picked a contractor. Instead of relying primarily on Lab126 to make the hardware, Amazon is reportedly turning to Samsung to make a tablet on its behalf. Apple sells 18.65 million iPhones, modest 4.69 million iPads
Apple in its fiscal results had mixed results for its devices that put it much further ahead than expected with the iPhone but disappointed some with tablets. Helped by the Verizon iPhone and a spike in AT&T adds, the company sold 18.65 million iPhones, a full 113 percent more than it did a year earlier. The growth put it past even its record holiday sales of 16.2 million.

Apple Q2 revenues jump 83 percent to $24.67 billion
Apple has released the results of its second fiscal quarter, which ended on March 26th. Revenue hit $24.67 billion, up 83 percent from $13.5 billion in the same quarter last year. Net income rose to $5.99 billion, or about $6.40 a share, as compared to $3.07 billion and $3.33 last year. Gross margins were down slightly from 41.7 percent to 41.4. International sales represented 59 percent of revenue, Apple says. For the June quarter the company is guiding to revenue of $23 billion, with an EPS of $5.03.

Japanese quake should make $200M hit on Apple revenue
Apple should take a revenue hit of about $200 million as a result of last month's Japanese earthquake, says COO Tim Cook. Speaking during the company's Q2 results call, Cook said the company has a long history with Japan, and has been taking some actions to help in relief efforts. Suppliers have been affected as well, but the executive explains that Apple been "working around the clock" to institute contingency plans, and that there was no impact on Q2 and there should only be a small impact on Q3.

Cook: Jobs still involved in major decisions, seen regularly

Toshiba brings out waterproof, 1080p Camileo BW10 pocket cam

Toshiba shows off 19nm flash, hints at 128GB smartphones
Toshiba late Wednesday revealed its first example of 19 nanometer NAND flash memory in a step that could lead to very high capacity smartphone and tablet storage. The two-bit-per-cell, 8GB per chip technology is the smallest ever and could double the capacity of mobile devices even before most have been using the previous upgrade. The extra-small size lets Toshiba stack 16 chips in a single package, leading to a single 128GB chip with twice as much storage as the previous best.

Ten One Design brings signature capture library to iOS apps
While styluses are rarely used with most iOS devices, there are situations where they can provide fine drawing abilities beyond what is normally possible with a finger. In particular, styluses are useful where electronic signatures need to be collected, such as for shipping delivery, medical or photographic release forms among other examples. Ten One Design, who make capacitive touch-screen styluses, have developed the Autograph iOS Library for creating and capturing digital signatures that works with XCode and can be incorporated into enterprise or iOS applications.

Apple has dropped its estimated shipment wait times on the iPad 2 to 1-2 weeks in many of the countries where the device is available. As noted by Mac Rumors, the new 1-2 week estimate is now posted on Apple’s online stores in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand, while estimates on its European stores remain at 2-3 weeks.
