GM extends OnStar smartphone control to 14 more vehicles

DevonTechnologies brings more apps to iOS, Mac app stores
DevonTechnologies, best known for its DevonThink information management line, have announced that all editions of DevonThink and DevonNote v2.0.9, as well as its freewares EasyFind v4.7.1 and XMenu v1.9.2 are now also available on the Mac App Store, while DevonThink To Go 1.1 -- a major update -- has been submitted to the iOS App Store. The latest versions of DevonThink and DevonNote feature an updated conduit for DevonThink To Go that fixes a number of bugs.

CrossOver Games update adds Rift support, improves WoW
Codeweavers has announced an update to its Windows game emulator for the Mac, CrossOver Games 10.1.10. The software, built on the Wine compatibility layer, allows a Mac -- also Linux -- to install and run Windows game titles in a compatibility mode, without having to run windows or a virtual machine. The update adds Rift support, fixes bugs with Star Trek Online and World of Warcraft and improves the installation for Lord of the Rings Online.

E-book sales more than double in early 2011
E-book sales have better than doubled year-to-year, the Association of American Publishers said. A new study put out on Thursday saw e-book sales surge 115 percent in January to produce $69.9 million in revenue versus just a year ago. The rush came as regular hardcover books lost 11.3 percent of their revenue to hit $49.1 million, paperbacks fell 19.7 percent to $83.6 million, and "mass market" books plunged 30.9 percent to $39 million.

3D fog projection display brings purple bunnies to life, just in time to lay chocolate eggs (video)
Fog projectors have been around for ages, but projecting a 2D image onto a wavy field of 3D smoke doesn't exactly result in the most immersive experience ever. How the iPad 2 got thinner and lighter
Putting a device that is already thin and light onto a weight loss program seems like an exercise in futility, but it's something that Apple engineers love to do. The entire line of MacBooks has become lighter and thinner over the years, and many were surprised when the new iPad 2 weighed in a full 15% lighter than the original device.

Sprint, T-Mobile push FCC for AT&T and Verizon data roaming
An informal coalition of smaller US carriers has pushed for the FCC to require data roaming agreements with AT&T and Verizon. Sprint, T-Mobile, Cricket, and carriers in the Rural Cellular Association have argued that they need a guarantee their subscribers can run data on these networks, not just voice, when they can't be on their native networks. They asked the FCC to "promptly move forward" and were hoping to get it on the FCC's meeting agendas as soon as April, Politico said.

New York Times reveals labyrinthine subscription plans, Canadian readers already hitting pay-wall

Carbonite intros Access for iPad, updated iPhone support
Backup service Carbonite has introduced an updated version of its Access app for iOS, 2.0.1. For the first time, the app is now natively compatible with the iPad. The key difference is an easier, expanded interface, for instance capable of displaying file previews and navigation menus simultaneously. Previews are correspondingly larger in size.

iPad 2 3G antenna causing problems with mic clarity
Apple apparently moved the iPad 2's microphone to the top center of the device, and that's causing problems in performance across the Wi-Fi and 3G models, says iLounge. The 3G model's mic is set in a different material than the Wi-Fi version (because of the extra antenna), and that means that the Wi-Fi version sounds "markedly cleaner" than the other versions, with the CDMA model sounding the most "slightly muffled and echo-prone." The problem is reportedly exacerbated when the mic is facing away from its target, like when you're using the iPad for FaceTime.
I doubt this is a dealbreaker for most users, but it is probably something we'll see fixed in the next version of the iPad -- it's interesting that this either never

Toshiba and Hitachi LCD plants damaged, will shut down for a month
You can't have a 9.0 magnitude earthquake without breaking a few factories, particularly ones that produce fragile liquid crystal screens, and this week Toshiba, Hitachi and Panasonic are each reporting damages that have forced them to close LCD production facilities affected by the tsunami and quake. Intel buys Silicon Hive for media chips in phones, tablets
Intel on Thursday bought Silicon Hive in a sign of its deeper push into mobile. The former Philips company is best known for making chipsets for media processing in smartphones, media hubs and other small technology. Motorola Xoom WiFi now available for pre-order
Motorola didn't say when pre-orders for the WiFi-only Xoom would be available when it finally announced the device yesterday, but some retailers have now stepped in and answered that question. You can currently pre-order the device from Amazon, Staples and Costco, with other participating retailers presumably set to follow shortly. In case you missed the news, the Xoom WiFi will run you $599 for the one and only 32GB version, and it will be available on March 27th. Android tops iPhone in mobile browser performance test
Blaze Software, a Canadian software company, today released the results of what it calls a "definitive" research effort to discover "which [mobile] browser is really faster from a user's point of view." The study concluded that Android's browser is 52% faster than the iPhone's.

Mosaid sues ASUS, Dell, RIM, more; 'all' owe Wi-Fi royalties
Mosaid late Wednesday sued as many technology firms as possible in hopes of profiting off the success of Wi-Fi. The Ottawa-based company's complaint targeted major device makers such as ASUS, Canon, Dell, Intel, and RIM as well as those building chipsets, such as Atheros and Marvell, for allegedly infringing six patents covering Wi-Fi, including network finding and the orthogonal multiplexing used for the faster speeds in the newer 802.11n spec. CEO John Lindgren insisted that "all" devices using Wi-Fi were dependent on the patents and had to pay royalties.

Credit-Suisse, Pacific Crest analysts stay upbeat on Apple
Financial analysts with Credit-Suisse and Pacific Crest have issued new notes on Apple, each taking an upbeat tone in contrast with recent developments. Starting coverage for the first time is Credit-Suisse's Kulbinder Garcha, who gives Apple a $500 stock target and earnings per share estimates of $25.11 for FY2011, and $32.49 for FY2012. By comparison, Wall Street consensus for the two years is currently $22.98 and $26.32.

iLounge fand gestern heraus, dass das integrierte Mikrofon im neuen iPad Qualitätsdifferenzen zwischen den verschiedenen Modellen zeigt.So bekommt man mit einem WiFi-Gerät das klarste Signal, während die 3G-Modelle beide etwas schlechter abschneiden.Da das Mikrofon oben in der Mitte, genau über der FaceTime-Kamera platziert ist, ist es bei den 3G-Modellen von Plastik umgeben, während das WiFi-Modell dort die normale Rückseite aufzuweisen hat.Auch scheint die CDMA-Technologie das Mikrofon etwas mehr zu stören als die GSM-Alternative.Ob Apple dieses Problem noch während dieses Produktzyklus behebt, wie es bei der Antenne des iPhone 4 vermutet wurde, ist unklar.

Pittsburgh Apple store robbed again
According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Walnut Street Apple Store in the Shadyside neighborhood is closed this morning due to a smash-and-grab robbery.
A cinder block was used to shatter the glass doors of the store sometime around 5:30 this morning, and a phone call to the store confirms that they were indeed closed this morning. According to the Post-Gazette, the robbers made off with thousands of dollars worth of MacBooks and iPods.
This isn't the first time we've seen the Shadyside store victimized by criminals. Back in November, it made national news with another smash-and-grab robbery.

Sony NEX-7 rumored, may look like classic Konica-Minolta cam
A rumor source has asserted that Sony has a new, high end version of the NEX in development that may recall one of Minolta's better-known digital cameras. 3G iPad 2 saddled with inferior mic input, tests show
The 3G iPad 2 has markedly inferior microphone input next to the Wi-Fi version, notes iLounge. Tests are said to reveal that 3G models generate "slightly muffled" input, also more prone to echoing. GSM-based iPads may actually produce better input than CDMA ones, but not by a large margin.

New York Times website, iPhone and iPad subscriptions start soon
We knew it was coming, and now there is a date: the Gray Lady is charging admission this month. The New York Times digital products (the website, TimesReader app, phone apps and iPad edition) will be subject to a subscription fee for US customers starting March 28, with Canadian customers active now as a test population.

Sony erhält Zugriff auf PayPal-Konto von PS3-Hacker
Ein Bundesrichter in San Francisco hat Sony die Erlaubnis erteilt, das PayPal-Konto des Hackers George Hotz alias "Geohot" einzusehen. Sie gilt für den Zeitraum von 1. Januar 2009 bis 1. Februar 2011. Es greift allerdings eine sogenannte "Attorney's Eyes Only"-Regelung, wonach nur die Anwälte der beiden Parteien Zugriff auf die Informationen erhalten. Gegen den 21-jährigen Hotz liegt eine einstweilige Verfügung vor, weil er einen Jailbreak für die Playstation 3 (PS3) auf seiner Website veröffentlicht hatte.

Samsung shows off 55-inch glasses-free 3D TV prototype
Samsung hasn't exactly been as big on glasses-free 3D TVs as some other manufacturers in recent years, but it's now showing one off at the FPD China trade show -- or a prototype of one, anyway. According to Tech-On!, the 55-inch display is able to accomodate nine different viewpoints for glass-free 3D viewing, and it can be switched into a 2D mode at any time, which works by changing the optical refraction index of an LCD panel that sits on top of the main LCD that's actually used to display images. Right now, the prototype is also relying on a direct-lit CCFL backlight, although Samsung notes that would likely be replaced with an LED backlight before it actually hits the market -- something that's still a good three years away.

New MacBook Pros suffer bad connections with iOS devices
A number of 2011-edition MacBook Pros are having trouble holding Home Sharing connections with iOS devices, Apple's support forum shows. The issue occurs regardless of whether or not someone is using iTunes 10.2.1, and affects any iOS hardware including the Apple TV, which if it detects an iTunes library still fail to see the media in it. Replacement Pros may not yield any better results, and even some older Macs are reportedly impacted.

Nokia software updater for Mac beta is available
Good news for those with a Nokia handset and a Mac as Nokia has finally released its software updater for Mac. This software tool lets you update with your handset using your Mac desktop or laptop. Right now, the tool only works with the operating system, but future releases will add support for applications. The tool is a release candidate and still under development, so expect it to be rough around the edges. Thus far, no issues have been reported, so you should be clear to use the tool if you own a Nokia smartphone. You can point your browser to the Nokia Beta Labs website for additional information and to download the software updater.

Sirius XM unveils iPad-native radio app with AirPlay
Sirius XM this morning put out a new version of its iOS app optimized for the iPad (free, App Store). The new version is universal for both iPad and iPhone, and takes advantage of the extra screen area to show a much more visual, art-guided channel picker. Those running iOS 4.3 on any device also now have the option of pushing audio through AirPlay to an Apple TV or another external audio source.

New York Times starts subscriptions for web, phones, iPads
The New York Times on Thursday outlined its long referenced plans to put up a paywall and start offering subscriptions. Everyone will get their first 20 articles per month for free, but further reading will need a monthly subscription. A $15 per month plan offers full web access as well as a smartphone app; $20 per month swaps out the phone for the iPad, and an unusually steep hike to $35 is required to get both phone and iPad use.

Caribou Android app opens doors over the internet, needs neither permission nor keys (video)
Opening doors with wireless RFID cardkeys is old hat at this point, but opening those doors with a smartphone is rather more intriguing. Doing so without permission of the people who put the locks on the doors, well, that brings things up to a whole new level of awesomeness. That's what Caribou does, a little Android app that remotely connects to a server managing the locks at a supposedly secure location. The app then diddles the ports and security settings of that server until it finds the magic phrase and, in a couple of seconds, it's open sesame time. Doors are unlocked remotely and then, 30 seconds later, automatically locked again. How thoughtful.

iPhone tops JD Power ranks, widens lead over Android
Apple continued a winning streak on Thursday after a new JD Power study of cellphone owners gave it the lead. For the fifth consecutive time, the iPhone had the highest satisfaction of any phone with a 795-point score. Japanese disaster could create iPad, iPhone shortages
The earthquake and tsunami which hit northern Japan on March 11th could create significant component delays for the iPad 2 and iPhone 4, claims Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Asian contacts reportedly say that the production status of Apple's Japanese suppliers is changing by the hour, and that none of them can definitively detail the damage they've suffered or when production will start up again. The Daily set to launch in the UK, US edition only
According to The Guardian newspaper, Rupert Murdoch's The Daily will be available in the UK within the first half of this year, but first Apple must introduce its new subscription-based pricing system in the UK.
Jon Miller, the chief digital officer of Murdoch's News Corporation, said that it would be "not too long from now" until the news app arrives in western Europe. It's understood, however, that this will simply be the US edition made available outside of the US. There was some conjecture that a British-specific edition would be made available in the future, but The Guardian reports that " the media giant [News Corp.] emphasized there were no immediate plans for a British edition of the title."

Study: Nexus S, Android beat iPhone 4 on web 84% of the time
A new study by Blaze has suggested that Android in ideal conditions can easily outperform an iPhone 4 on the web. A Google Nexus S running Android 2.3 is about 52 percent faster on average than an iPhone 4, even with the iOS 4.3 speed boost in effect. In the real world, the Nexus S would outrun the iPhone 4 on Fortune 1000 company websites 84 percent of the time, the Ottawa-based firm said.

Dungeons & Such is exactly what it sounds like. It's a very nostalgic homemade RPG game for iOS that will have you looking back fondly on the days of Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy on the NES. Sure, by modern standards, the graphics are a little lame -- this definitely isn't Infinity Blade we're talking about. Most of the game is in menus, and most of the art is static 2D pictures rather than brilliant 3D environments. But the game runs smoothly, the action is varied enough to stay interesting, and if you're a fan of old-school dungeon crawling, you'll probably find yourself right at home.

Western Digital put out one of the largest capacity dual-disk external drives on Thursday by introducing a 6TB version of the My Book Studio Edition II. The drive pairs two of the still-rare 3TB drives, optionally in a RAID mirror or stripe, and is aimed primarily at creative pros who deal with very large photos or videos on a regular basis. Having kicked out a release candidate on March 9th, Mozilla now feels confident enough in version 4 of its well loved Firefox browser and has set a date for its final release: March 22nd. Dutch researchers dust off X-ray machine from 1896 to compare it to modern equipment
This one is a bit shocking to us. X-rays were discovered in 1896, and recently, a team of researchers at Maastricht University Medical Center in the Netherlands pulled a machine from 1896 off the shelf for the purpose of comparing its results to modern equipment. The researchers say that this original equipment pumped out around 1,500 times more radiation than new equipment in order to produce its results. Speaking of those results, they are unsurprisingly less sharp and detailed than modern X-rays, but they still look pretty impressive if you ask us. Android 2.2 becomes most widely distributed version of OS
Nine months after it was released, Googleís Android 2.2 (Froyo) OS has become the most widely distributed version of its mobile OS by some margin. Android 2.2 is now on 61.3 percent of Android devices, followed by Android 2.1 on 29 percent. However, more recent distributions of the OS have a much lower adoption rate to date. Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and 2.3.3 accounts for only 1.7 percent combined, while its Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) tablet optimized OS only currently accounts for just 0.2 percent.

VMware management iPad client awaiting approval
VMware users who've been waiting for the promised iPad server management client may soon be able to stop holding their breath. BYD Motors sneaks on to American market, could make US debut official by year's end
We've heard rumblings of BYD coming to America before, but it seems it won't be making a big deal of its Stateside entrée -- at least not yet. Bitkom: Deutsche Software-Exporte erreichen Rekordwert
Die deutschen Exporte von Software haben im vergangenen Jahr einen neuen Rekordwert erreicht, wie der Hightech-Verband Bitkom auf Basis von Daten der Deutschen Bundesbank mitteilt. Die Ausfuhren von Software-Produkten und IT-Dienstleistungen sind demnach 2010 um 16 Prozent gegenüber dem Vorjahr auf 12,1 Milliarden Euro gestiegen. Analyse des iPad 2 Displays
Das Retina-Display des iPhone 4 ist nach wie vor das Mass aller Dinge — für das iPad wurde gehoft, dass Apple auch beim iPad 2 auf ein Retina-Display setzt. Dass das Apple Tablet, welches letzten Freitag in den USA auf den Markt gekommen ist, in seiner zweiten Generation auch ein Retina-Display erhält, war der Wunsch vieler — wie wir seit der iPad-2-Vorstellung Anfang März wissen, hat das iPad 2 jedoch kein hochauflösendes Super-Display erhalten. Wie uns im Show-Room des Apple Special Events vom Apple-Demo-Personal gesagt wurde, erhielt das iPad keine Änderungen beim Display gegenüber seinem Vorgänger. Ganz so stimmte diese Aussage jedoch nicht. Zwar ist die Auflösung weiterhin bei 1024 mal 768 Pixel bzw. die Pixel-Dichte weiterhin bei 132 Pixeln pro Zoll, aber der Formfaktor des eigentlichen Displays hat sich verändert: Apple verbaut im iPad 2 im Vergleich zum Original iPad vom letzten Jahr ein noch dünneres Display.

Foxconn owner reports revenue up thanks to iPad 2, other devices
Hon Hai Precision, the parent company of Foxconn, recorded an impressive revenue increase in its latest earnings report thanks to the iPad 2, the original iPad and the Kinect. According to the Taiwan Economic News, the manufacturing company reported revenue of NT$152.878 billion (about US$5.2 billion) in February 2011, up 25.81% year over year. This increase in revenue may offset some concerns over the slowed growth of the company.

Take a musician, a film company and four iPad 2s to a rocking dance party, and you have all the ingredients for an impressive indie music video. Filmed by Remedy Films, this 5-minute music video for the song Need by Eddy shows what is possible with the iPad 2 and some talent.

SMART Utility updated to v3, adds menu extra
Volitans Software has announced the update of SMART Utility to version 3.0, a major update that adds a menu extra for running in the background, an improved user interface for single partitions and better support of solid-state drives (SSDs), along with numerous enhancements and fixes. Apple verteilt neuen 10.6.7-Build
Apple hat dieser Tage den registrierten Entwicklern des Mac Developer Programmes ein neues Build — 10J869 — des nächsten Minor-Updates für Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard verteilt. Apple listet in den Build-Notizen zum mittlerweile achten Vorab-Build zu Mac OS X 10.6.7 weiterhin keinen bekannten Fehler. Das Update wird nach aktuellen Stand knapp 550 MB gross. Auch Mac OS X Server ist mittlerweile auf diesem Build angekommen und Apple listet auch hier weiterhin keine bekannten Fehler. Wann das Update von Apple veröffentlicht wird und in einer finalen Version für alle OS-X-10.6-Benutzer zur Installation bereit steht, ist nicht bekannt.

Visualized: classic biplane gets a glass cockpit
Waco's YMF-5D biplane may look like an authentically vintage aircraft from the outside, but it's an entirely different story once you strap yourself into the pilot's seat. The plane is available with a number of different "glass cockpit" options, including the top of the line model pictured above that's outfitted with a whole slew of Garmin aviation gear and other 21st century niceties. Of course, that doesn't exactly come cheap - all told, the full glass configuration runs just over $99,000, or over $500,000 including the plane itself (you can see what it looks like after the break).

Play Rainbox Six: Vanguard (kind of) with this interactive trailer
This is a new one -- in order to promote its new iOS title, Rainbox Six: Vanguard (coming to the App Store tomorrow), Gameloft has put together this interactive trailer over on YouTube. Not only does the trailer show off some gameplay of the upcoming title, but it allows you to actually make decisions as you watch about how exactly how to play the game.
I can't say it's entirely successful (though the game looks pretty good -- Gameloft is doing well at aping most gameplay styles for the iPhone, and in this case they're doing it officially), but it's a really interesting way to market a title, and of course when it comes to the App Store, that's often one of the biggest priorities. Three family magazines launching on the iPad
Meredith Corporation is bringing three of its most popular magazines -- Parents, Fitness and the venerable Better Homes and Gardens -- to the iPad, complete with additional content and interactivity. Currently available as single-issue sales, the digital editions cost the same as newsstand editions ($3 for Parents or Fitness, $4 for BH&G). The company has hinted that it may offer subscriptions on the iPad via a third party such as Zinio rather than use Apple's subscription model.

Internet Explorer 9 hits 2.35 million downloads in first 24 hours, we're mildly impressed
Okay, so 2.35 million downloads in a single day is nothing to scoff at, but it's also not a monumental achievement in terms of browser downloads in the first 24. A post to Internet Explorer's official blog used the word "wow" to describe the IE9 numbers, but considering Firefox 3 got the Guinness world record for most software downloads in a day, with 8 million way back in 2008, we're reluctant to call this news wow-worthy. Given, Firefox 3 was available for both Mac and PC, but it still beat Windows' new browser three times over. Don't get us wrong,

D-Link has added to its compact 802.11n-compatible Wi-Fi adapters with its Wireless N 150 Pico Adapter (aka the DWA-121). Doodle Jump Hop movie tie-in out now
The promised Doodle Jump movie tie-in game for Universal's movie Hop has hit the App Store, and it's completely free. The game plays just like the very popular Doodle Jump, though the graphics have been updated slightly, and of course they're all branded to fit the Hop characters. iPhone Personal Hotspot transmitting GPS information to tethered iPads?
You may not have known this, but besides missing a 3G radio, the WiFi-only iPad also lacks the A-GPS chip that enables exact GPS positioning versus less-accurate WiFi triangulation. BMW promises 5 Series 'New Energy Vehicle' for China

Time Warner's iPad TV service cut back due to overwhelming demand
Earlier this week, Time Warner Cable released its new iPad app which allowed users to watch live TV on the device, if they met certain key conditions. The app only works when connected to residential networks connected to TWC's RoadRunner cable modem ISP service, or the parallel Earthlink service delivered by TWC, and users have to subscribe to a base tier of cable TV service as well.

RIM issues PSA following Pwn2Own exploit: turn off JavaScript on your BlackBerry
It's not just desktop web browsers getting hacked at this year's Pwn2Own challenge -- mobile browsers have also been targeted for vulnerabilities, and a fairly big one has now been found in RIM's browser for BlackBerry OS 6.
