Sirius XM to debut Tiger Blood Radio: all Charlie Sheen, all day long
Charlie Sheen has a pretty impressive track record: in addition to a twenty-five-plus year movie career, he's brought tacky bowling shirts to the forefront of American consciousness, earned a Golden Globe Icon award, and shot his onetime fiance Kelly Preston. Is this enough to warrant an entire radio channel dedicated to the man who describes himself as having a "10,000-year-old brain and the boogers of a 7-year-old"? Jailbreak arrives for iOS 4.3 GM ahead of launch
Just hours after Apple released its iOS 4.3 golden master (GM) build to developers, the release was reportedly jailbroken using the same method that had worked for the initial betas. A Cult of Mac report suggests devices running iOS 4.3 can be jailbroken using a more advanced process, which requires users to create a custom IPSW, or a simpler method that only works as a tethered jailbreak.

TRIM support for SSDs already on in 2011 MacBook Pros
Owners of new MacBook Pros are already getting the TRIM command support for SSDs well ahead of its debut in Lion, a new check uncovered on Friday. Buyers who option up the systems with one the build-to-order SSD drives will see TRIM support mentioned in System Profiler. AppleInsider couldn't quantify the speed improvement in its finding, but even new MacBook Air units so far ship without TRIM onboard.

SteelSeries branches out with new iOS, PS3 models
Gaming peripherals maker SteelSeries has introduced two new over-the-head earphones. The Siberia is made for gamers and is compatible with the Sony PS3 and Xbox 360 gaming consoles as well as Macs and PCs. The 7H, meanwhile, is iPod, iPhone and iPad compatible. Other than the design, the two share similar technical specs, including the same 50mm drivers.

PhotoAge analysis of Steve Jobs over the years
The PhotoAge iPhone app ($0.99) is a fun little app that I have a love-hate relationship with. I love it, because it's fun to see how old the app thinks people are. I also hate PhotoAge, because it said I was 10 years older than I actually am and that result was used with evil intent at a Macworld Expo dinner (yes, I'm talking about you, Aaron!).

Apple confirms $100 refund for those who recently purchased an original iPad
Much like the company did when it suddenly dropped the price of its original iPhone, Apple is giving $100 back to those who purchased an iPad up to a fortnight before the March 2nd unveiling of the iPad 2. If our math is correct, that makes February 16th the cutoff date, and it's being reported that those in the US will see $100 placed back on their credit card, while those overseas will get £100 / €100 back in their pocket. AT&T, others capping iPhone Personal Hotspot at 3 devices?
The Personal Hotspot feature included in the upcoming iOS 4.3 software due to arrive for the iPhone 4 on AT&T on March 11 will support only three devices, according to a document leaked Friday. The iPhone 4 on Verizon's network can support as many as five devices, leading some to believe AT&T itself may have instituted the plan. Engadget's source didn't have any added insight.

Apple hunts for iOS speech, sync specialists
Apple has opened a series of job positions which may indicate where the company is headed with iOS, notes AppleInsider. Three of these are for "iOS Speech Operations Engineers," who will be assigned to work with the iOS Application Frameworks team based in Cupertino. Apple is asking that candidates have experience with voice recognition systems such as Google Voice, Nuance Recognizer or IBM WebSphere Voice.

Verizon to carry iPad 2 on March 11
Verizon removed doubt about its plans on Friday and put up a home page ad as well as a teaser page confirming the iPad 2 would be available in its stores on March 11. The EVDO-equipped 3G version will reach the carrier's stores the same time as the Wi-Fi and HSPA 3G versions. It's likely that the store will join in having a special 5PM release.

iPad 2 prompts Samsung to rethink the Galaxy Tablet
A senior official for Samsung Electronics on Friday admitted his company would have to rethink its line of Galaxy tablets to compete with Apple's thinner, more affordable iPad 2.
"We will have to improve the parts that are inadequate," Lee Don-joo, executive vice president of Samsung's mobile division, told Yonhap News Agency. "Apple made it very thin."

AT&T Mobile Hotspot for iPhone 4 limited to just three WiFi devices?
Say it ain't so! According to this here slide, which details a bit of insidery AT&T information about the impending release of iOS 4.3, Ma Bell's iPhone 4 will have its Personal Hotspot restricted to use with just three devices. Coda sets target of 50,000 electric vehicles sold by 2015, mostly in the US
Upstart Coda Automotive may not have met its original goal to start selling its all-electic sedan in California by the end of 2010, but that's not stopping it from making some other fairly bold projections. iOS 4.3 will be making your iOS device even more desirable in just one week's time -- that is, if yours is one of those lucky enough to be compatible with it.
It will work on an iPhone 3GS and iPhone 4, but not on an iPhone 3G (so, I guess I may be upgrading sooner than I thought). iOS 4.3 also supports the past two generations of iPod touch and both generations of iPad. Most notably, it won't work on a CDMA Verizon iPhone, which currently runs iOS 4.2.6.

Fortune says Apple tops them all!
This tidbit of news is not a surprise, but it's sure nice to see.
For the 4th straight year Fortune says that Apple is the world's most admired company, as it "continues to set the bar high for high tech companies across the board."
Citing nearly doubled profits from a year ago, launching the iPad and iPad 2, and working with Verizon to sell the iPhone 4 on their CDMA network, Fortune also praises Apple for doing so well while Steve Jobs has been on medical leave.

Apple's 'Year of iPad 2' doesn't necessarily mean no more iPad updates in 2011
At Apple's recent unveiling of the second-generation iPad, Steve Jobs said "2011 is the year of iPad 2." That sent several sites, including AppleInsider, into a flurry of backtracking on previous rumors concerning a possible iPad 3 release at the annual iPod event in September. New Android API reaches phone apps to curb fragmentation
Google later on Thursday posted a new version of its Fragments API targeted at earlier platforms. The new version will let app developers write apps for platforms as old as Android 1.6 while still letting their interface elements scale up to tablet size for Android 3.0. Apple interested in building 4G LTE iPhone "early"
Apple may be looking to build a TD-LTE iPhone earlier than expected, according to a comment from China Mobile Chairman Wang Jianzhou. Jianzhou singled out Steve Jobs while speaking about the possibility of an LTE iPhone outside a conference meeting on Friday. The chairman said "Jobs has expressed his interest in an LTE iPhone and is willing to start the development at an early date."

iOS 4.3 doesn't bring nearly as many changes to the table as iOS 4.2 did last November. The release of iOS 4.2 was a watershed moment for the iPad, bringing features like multitasking and folders that made it a far more useful device than before. The iPhone got fewer new features in iOS 4.2, some of which have proven more useful than others; I use AirPlay almost every day to stream from my iPhone to my home theater system, but I used AirPrint once (after some hacking), then forgot about it.

Better Place swappable EV batteries priced, Renault is definitely onboard
It's going to be a little while before you're able to recharge your battery-electric EV as quickly as you can refuel your gasoline-powered machine. Rumor: Apple 'afraid' of Facebook's power
A rumor circulating Friday has suggested that Apple is afraid of and distrustful of Facebook. The tip, reportedly from a Facebook team that handles external deals, claimed that "they hate" Facebook at Apple because of its power. Apple CEO Steve Jobs "has expressed his interest in an LTE iPhone and is willing to start the development at an early date," claims China Mobile chairman Wang Jianzhou. Verizon tops JD Power call quality study, AT&T mixed
JD Power's latest call quality study has given Verizon the lead in call quality for its 13th consecutive period. The CDMA carrier had significantly better call quality in the US northeast, southeast, southwest and west. It only fell short of an unambiguous lead in the mid-Atlantic, where it was tied with AT&T, and in the north central area, where US Cellular had the fewest call problems.

Apple on track to ship 10 million iPads in Q2 2011
Asian newspaper Digitimes is reporting that Apple may deliver over 10 million iPads in the upcoming quarter. According to component suppliers, Apple is poised to ship over 6 million iPads in the current quarter, 3 million of which will be iPad 2 models. As production ramps up and demand increases, the Cupertino company may sell between 10 to 12 million iPads in the next quarter. Apple is estimated to sell over 40 million iPads by the end of the year, and Digitimes predicts that more than half of this 40 million figure will be sold in the second half of the year.

The Telenoid R1 achieved a new level of creepiness on the Japanese robotic front -- quite an achievement given the country's long history of oddball automated creations. Elfoid takes the cake, though. Developed at Osaka University and with help from NTT DoCoMo, Elfoid looks just like the Telenoid and, indeed, does much the same thing: giving you a human(ish) silhouette to talk to. GQ, Vanity Fair, Glamour for iPad to migrate to new apps
The iPad versions of GQ, Vanity Fair and Glamour are all migrating to new apps within the next month, says publisher Conde Nast. The major factor involved is a decision to migrate from a proprietary digital publishing system to one created by Adobe. Adobe would likely have become an industry standard for iPad magazines last summer -- thanks to an ability to cross-compile for different platforms -- but Apple temporarily banned third-party development tools, only restoring developer freedoms under the looming threat of an FTC investigation.

GDC 2011: The latest from Disney Mobile
Disney's mobile gaming division had a table claimed in the company's hotel suit during GDC 2011, and I stopped by to see Disney's Jeff Nuzzi and check out the company's latest offerings. There were a few titles on display to be revealed later this year, but the current focus was on JellyCar 3, the latest in Disney Mobile's most popular line of casual gaming apps. The game (the original version of which was designed by a Disney developer in his spare time) is due for an update very soon, which will add new cars, the ability to import your own pictures for cars and a new level pack called "Time and Space" to play around with.

Samsung panics over iPad 2, may cut Galaxy Tab 10.1's price
Samsung was caught off-guard by the iPad 2 and may have to rethink its strategy for the Galaxy Tab 10.1, the company's executive VP of mobile Lee Don-joo said on Friday. The Korean company had planned to charge a premium over the original Galaxy Tab, which already cost nearly as much as a larger, first-generation 3G iPad, but wasn't certain it could do so now that the iPad 2 was roughly matching it in features for the same $499 price. Anyone who believes we're nearing some sort of saturation point with the two hottest device classes of the moment -- smartphones and tablets -- ought to check out this latest data from investment bank RBC Capital Markets. It shows an estimated 394 million people already possess one of these newfangled gadgets, and -- while we don't consider the world's population a relevant metric here -- sets that number up against some other illustrative stats.The most important one for smartphone growth is the tally of mobile subscribers, which stands at just over five billion presently and dwarfs any inroads that smart mobile devices have made to this point. AirPlay in 4.3 delivers on access for third-party apps
AirPlay is one of the cooler new technologies Apple has brought us recently, and iOS 4.3 (coming March 11) will allow third-party apps full use of its wireless streaming capability, not just for audio, but for video as well. Apple is already busy approving apps that take advantage of AirPlay's video-streaming capabilities. For example, StreamToMe allows you to stream from a Mac or a PC to your iOS device via Wi-Fi or 3G.

For the right player, Shadow Era is a really impressive game. I say "for the right player," because it's not exactly newbie friendly -- this is a full-fledged collectible card game, implemented right there on the iPhone and the iPad. For some players, that's probably music to your ears -- if you're a big fan of Magic: The Gathering, you'll feel right at home here as you summon allies, cast spells and build resources to take down opponents and build up your decks. But if you've never touched a competitive card game, you'll probably be lost right out of the gate. While Shadow Era does offer a few tips in a short tutorial, it's really meant for players who pretty much know what they're doing already.

Apple talking to get repeat iTunes music downloads
A trio of sources claimed late Thursday that Apple was pressing labels for a long-requested deal to allow customers as many downloads as they like of an iTunes song they've purchased. Discussions with major labels and independents would give listeners the same rights they have as at a store like Amazon MP3, where buying a track once gives users permission to download it again on any device they own, including iOS devices. Bloomberg was told it could be ready by the middle of the year, or possibly in time for the iPhone 5 launch.

Conductive fibers, yo, they're the future. Japan's AIST is back with yet another quirky idea, this time integrating capacitive touch sensors into 1-micron thick nylon fibers. The results is a big old cloth that can sense your loving touch and inform nearby computers of what you're up to. iTunes: Gekaufte Musik bald beliebig oft herunterladbar?

iOS 4.3: Entwickler erhalten Golden Master
Für alle kompatiblen Apple-Geräte hat der Hersteller den Golden Master des iOS 4.3 freigegeben. Diese vorläufige, aber bereits sehr fortgeschrittene Variante namens Build 8F190 kommt genau eine Woche vor dem angekündigten Veröffentlichungstermin der finalen Version sowie dem Verkaufsstart des iPad 2 in den USA. New Chrome OS update finally fixes the Cr-48's touchpad issues
Google's Chrome OS, and thus the Cr-48, has seen a lot of updates and big fixes since we took a hard look at it back in December, but the wonky touchpad, which we seriously struggled with, hasn't exactly seen much love. That is, until today. The most recent Chrome OS update, which now brings it to version 0.10.156.46, includes new "trackpad and sensitivity settings," and it definitely makes a world of difference. Steam kommt für den Fernseher

WiFi-only Motorola Xoom appears at Sam's Club, bearing $539 price?
You might have seen Motorola's WiFi-only Xoom popping up at European e-tailers, but it's reportedly flying the red, white and blue today, having materialized at Sam's Club in the good ol' USA. Apple today filed for a new trademark for its Ping bubbles symbol. Patently Apple reports that Apple applied for four distinct trademarks related to the paired bubbles, each resembling conversation bubbles from a comic strip, though the Apple bubbles are more stylized. Apple said shipping 12 million iPad 2s in spring alone
Apple could ship more than 10 million iPads a quarter for the first time in the spring, part suppliers claimed late Thursday. The company is still on track to ship 6.5 million iPads before April, two to three million of which would be the iPad 2, but would nearly double that in the spring to 10-12 million iPad 2s. Shipments would step up further to where Digitimes' insiders estimated 21.5 million to 24 million would ship in the last half of 2011.

'Another World' coming to iPhone, iPad
Classic game Out of This World (or, as its known outside France, Another World) -- is coming later this year to iOS, developers DotEmu and BulkyPix have revealed. AT&T intros new postpaid plans for the iPad 2 and other tablets
AT&T introduced two new postpaid plans for tablets, a category that includes the upcoming iPad 2. Unlike prepaid plans which require customers to buy data allotments upfront, these new plans can be added to a customer's current monthly cellular bill. This new postpaid option is month-to-month and does not require a long-term commitment.

Yobongo app brings local chat to certain cities
Yobongo (not to be confused with Yojimbo) is a community-sourced chat application for the iPhone now available on the App Store. Currently only serving Austin (Texas), New York City and San Francisco, the company plans to expand service to other locations in the US soon. Netflix for iPad updated with a new custom UI, but loses features like DVD queueing
While its page on iTunes doesn't show any change, HackingNetflix points out Netflix for iPad was updated today with a new version of the app that gives it a customized interface instead of just pulling up a lightly customized version of the standard webpage. That reduces browsing options to four areas: Home, Genres, Search and Instant Queue. Note the word instant, because there is no longer any way to access ones DVD queue from within the app (pulling up the Netflix page in a browser window or using a third party app, still works just fine)

Roadmap leak puts Windows 8 tablets in back-to-school 2012
Microsoft's long-term schedule for Windows 8 tablets was given support Thursday night with an apparent leak of the timetable. Sources backed the notion of a Windows 8 public beta being ready at the end of 2011 and a finished version of the OS nearly a year year, in time for the "back-to-school season." The timing given to Bloomberg wasn't more specific, but it would be consistent with the third anniversary of Windows 7's Release To Manufacturing (RTM) and Microsoft's preference for three-year gaps between OS releases.

Android developer demand close to iPhone on major job board
A minor but symbolic shift in developer interest may have occurred this week with Android development interest getting close to the iPhone on a major job board. Dice searches for Android now show 1,059 job openings where a search for iPhone turns up 1,015. Apple may still have a lead, since searches for iPad show positions that don't mention the iPhone.

Google and Microsoft showed a rare instance of cooperation this week in a newly discovered lawsuit launched in an attempt to shut down patent troll GeoTag.
