Apple releases Xcode 4 GM. Again!
Apple has just posted another GM seed (number 2 if you're keeping count) of Xcode 4. Build 4A304a is ready for you to download, install, use and love. You need to be a paid member of either the iOS or the Mac dev programs to access this build.
Now, if Apple would only get around to, you know, releasing Xcode 4 It would make life ever so much interesting.
Be aware that if you are beta testing Lion, you will need to download and install the separate Lion-specific tools. Xcode 4 GM is built for Snow Leopard.

Wi-Fi Xoom may show at Sam's Club for $539
A new sighting at Sam's Club may have put the price of a Wi-Fi only Motorola Xoom much lower than its 3G counterpart. A meeting and an early floor stand show the tablet costing $539, or a dramatic $261 lower than what Verizon charges for its contract-free version. Droid-Life's sources showed that the Walmart-owned chain would give users special bundles with a silicone "Protective Gel Case."

CTIA exec promises 'significant' new tablet launch at trade show next month
A trade show executive attempting to generate interest in his own trade show may not exactly be news, but CTIA vice president Rob Mesirow has made things a bit more interesting than usual by promising today that a "significant" new tablet will be launched at the mobile-focused show, which runs from March 22nd to the 24th. Apogee Jam adapter connects guitars to Macs, iOS devices
Apogee has just introduced the Jam adapter for connecting electric and bass guitars to iOS 4.3 devices and Macs. They can then record their performances and an integrated control knob adjusts the gain. The digital converter processes the sound at each stage of the circuit to boost the signal-to-noise ratio.

BBC iPlayer 'definitely' coming to foreign iPads this year
The BBC's iPlayer service will "definitely" become available internationally on the iPad later this year, according to director general Mark Thompson. Speaking at this week's Financial Times Digital Media & Broadcasting conference, Thompson added that foreign access would cost "a small number of dollars per month, definitely fewer than 10." The statement was likely made with US prices in mind, given the size of the potential market.

Motorola invests in HTML5 game dev Moblyng, snubs Flash
Motorola on Thursday invested a mystery amount into Moblyng in an uncharacteristic push for HTML5 over Flash. The game developer is best known for its casual games using HTML5 that work across multiple platforms, including Android, iOS, webOS, and Facebook. Its cash infusion wasn't detailed but would be "accelerating the realization" of its cross-platform gaming, Motorola said.

Sony's PSP Go officially drops to $150
It may not be the first time you've been able to snag a PSP Go for $150, but you can now rest assured that you'll never pay anything more than that, as Sony has officially knocked another $50 off the handheld's list price. Labelbox tags your photos in a beautiful way
A brand new app called Labelbox is taking the iOS App Store by storm this week, and for good reason. It does something simple - putting labels on photos - in an aesthetically pleasing and, really, quite fun way.
The app asks you to take a photo or choose from your camera roll, at which point it prompts you to apply a label of your choice by swiping over the area the label will go (much like you were actually putting down a strip of tape, neat)! Labelbox also has some pretty deep sharing features built in, including uploading to Facebook, Twitter, and the ever-growing Steply photo service.

Apple has begun seeding the iOS 4.3 gold master to developers by way of the iOS Dev Center. Separate downloads are available targeted by device, including the iPad 1, iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, or third- or fourth-generation iPod touch. Apple iOS 4.3 GM available now to developers
That's right, kids! The Golden Master version of iOS 4.3 has become available -- it's seeding as we speak. If you do any development on the iPad, iPhone or iPod touch, and you're ready to get to partake in (or even dev for) all the new AirPlay and Personal Hotspot capabilities (for starters), you know where to go. As for the rest of us, we guess we'll have to wait until the OS gets its official release on March 11. By the way, there's no word of an OS update for Apple TV yet. Sorry, kids. Apple seeking new paradigm for educating students with special needs
According to a report from AppleInsider, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) this week disclosed a recent patent application for delivering educational content to students in a classroom setting. Filed by Apple in August, 2009, under the title "External Content Transformation," the patent describes new methods for a host computer to deliver content to multiple client devices in a format that accommodates the individual needs of each user.

Twitter put out a major update to its iOS app (free, App Store) on Thursday that gave it an edge over most other versions. The 3.3 upgrade gives iPhone users the Quick Bar, a new extra to keep updated on trends. Apple releases iOS 4.3 GM seed to devs
iOS 4.3 will be released to the general public next Friday, on March 11th. Today, Apple uploaded the gold master seed for developers. The release remains under the NDA umbrella until next Friday, however, with details outside of those publicly discussed by Apple remaining off limits.
The new 4.3 firmware will include many new improvements including enhanced AirPlay and personal hotspot support.

Fogale Nanotech takes the 'touch' out of 'touchscreen smartphone' at CeBIT
French sensor manufacturer Fogale Nanotech -- historically more of an industrial supplier than a consumer-facing one -- was demonstrating its non-contact capacitive sensors at CeBIT this week and how they might be used for the most consumer-facing application of them all: smartphone interfaces. Early iPad 2 JavaScript benchmarks show 4X faster browsing
Early tests of the iPad 2's web performance have suggested a major lift in speed over the original. The combination of iOS 4.3's Nitro engine in Safari with the dual-core A5 gave the newer tablet a SunSpider JavaScript completion time of 2121.7ms, or just over four times faster than the original iPad's 8594.9ms. SlashGear's benchmarks showd it excelling the most in a 3D raytracing test, scoring over five times faster, but also better than the average in access and cryptography tests.

AT&T to offer mobile hotspot on iPhone 4 starting March 11th, requires usual $45 data plan
Though it was kind of implied during the iPad 2 event yesterday when we learned that the GSM (that is, non-Verizon) version of the iPhone 4 would be getting iOS 4.3 with mobile hotspot capability on March 11th, we've doubly confirmed with AT&T today that the carrier will be offering the feature right out of the gate -- a departure from the tethering delay of days gone by. March Madness to stream to the iPad and iPhone for free
CBS, Turner Sports and the NCAA announced this week that streaming content from the March Madness basketball tournament will be made available to iOS users for free. In the past, CBS has streamed the content for free over the internet and to iPhone owners via a paid application. Last year, the iPhone March Madness On demand application cost sport fans $10. Talking Carl app has been "hijacked", report angry users
Talking Carl is a mildly famous iPhone app in which a vaguely anthropomorphic red blob repeats things you say to it in a funny voice and responds to touches and prods with giggles and yelps. Readers have been sending us quite angry messages about a mysterious recent update to the app which replaced the cheerful Carl with a cardboard box, but it wasn't immediately obvious exactly what had happened.
The app was originally developed as a collaboration between Yann Le Coroller, a motion designer and graphics expert, and Awyse, a software publisher. TUAW spoke with both Le Coroller and Guillaume Carre, CEO of Awyse, so we could get to the bottom of the story.

Skyfire 3.0 adds more Flash video, Facebook functions

AT&T confirms it will support personal hotspot for the iPhone
AT&T representative Seth Bloom reportedly told PhoneScoop that AT&T will offer personal hotspot when it debuts with iOS 4.3. As was suggested in earlier rumors, the hotspot feature will require customers to subscribe to the $45/4 GB DataPro Plan with tethering. AT&T was rumored to be interested in personal hotspot, but this is the first time the carrier has stated publicly it was going to offer this feature.

AT&T denies mass exodus to Verizon in wake of CDMA iPhone 4
There's been a fair amount of speculation about sales of Verizon-network iPhones -- how many (half a million in a day?), how many are being sold to fed-up AT&T customers (Abandon ship! Abandon ship!) -- but AT&T says it's not worried. AT&T Mobility boss Ralph de la Vega says iPhone users aren't defecting to Verizon Wireless any faster than the carrier expected. "We haven't seen any surprises, and everything is pretty much within our expectations," de la Vega stated.

WebGL spec goes 1.0, WebCL coming
The Khronos Group used the second day of the Game Developer Conference to post the finished, 1.0 spec for the WebGL standard. Its language brings OpenGL ES 2.0 visuals to browsers that can recognize WebGL in HTML5 and JavaScript. A suitably equipped browser can play real, 3D games with pixel shaders and other more modern visuals without having to use a plugin, even on phones and tablets.

Disney buys game engine developer Rocket Pack for HTML5
The Walt Disney Company has just bought the young, Finland-based HTML5 gaming engine developer Rocket Pack. News of the purchase came from a Disney spokesperson talking to TechCrunch. Rocket Pack creates HTML5-based games that don't require plugins to play in a web browser. How much the deal was worth hasn't been revealed.

Nielsen: Android just past iPhone in US market share
Android has finally claimed a lead over other smartphone platforms in the US, Nielsen determined on Thursday. Between November and January, Android broke a three-way deadlock and claimed 29 percent of the US smartphone market, just ahead of the iPhone and BlackBerry tied at 27 percent. GDC 2011: Tatem Games' Carnivores and RoboSockets
Tatem Games is a mobile games studio out of Ukraine that's been making games since the mid-'90s. They originally started with PC games, CEO Igor Karev told me here at GDC 2011, but lately the company's focus has been on the iPhone and the iPad. "It's about timing," Karev says, "we can make cool games, and not spend two years on them." The company's biggest titles are the Carnivores games, a series of 3D "hunting" games (though the titles have grown to encompass more than just killing things) that started out on the PC and have since garnered 3.5 million downloads.
The Carnivores games have a dedicated user base, and Tatem closely follows customers' advice, structuring updates around iTunes comments and input. There is an update due

They say a picture is worth a thousand words -- but in this case, a picture is worth tens of billions of dollars in market share. Nielsen has broken down its US smartphone market share stats between November and January in two dimensions -- by market share and by platform -- and stuffed all that data into a single block of mesmerizing color. It's interesting to see the Apple and RIM juggernauts flanked by two imposing, red slivers of HTC, isn't it? The research firm also took a look at platforms by age group; the shares are surprisingly consistent across the board, though Android does have a slight edge with the young'uns. Gartner lowers PC expectations in wake of iPad 2
Analysts at Gartner lowered their expectations for PCs on Thursday in the immediate aftermath of the iPad 2. The group now expects PC shipments to hit 440.6 million in 2012, still a 13.6 percent bump from what's expected this year but down from the previously predicted 14.8 percent. Tablets like the iPad and Xoom are now more likely to "dramatically slow" notebooks and would not only prevent buying secondary notebooks but lead some to skip getting a notebook altogether, research lead George Shiffler said.

Apple begins offering Joint Venture business services
Confirming preliminary reports, Apple has formally introduced Joint Venture, a special support program for small- to mid-sized businesses. The service requires buying a new Mac and paying at least $499 per year, but the latter covers up to four other "systems," which can include not just Macs but iPhones, iPods, iPads or even Cinema Displays. Up to 100 systems can be brought under Joint Venture if a business is willing to add the extra "uplift" fees to membership dues.

RIM could bring its jealously guarded BlackBerry Messenger service to Android and the iPhone, a potentially significant rumor claimed Thursday. The strategy would involve a "stripped down" version of BBM that would focus on text chat but omit and geolocation and media sharing to still give users an incentive to use a BlackBerry. Pricing was still in flux, BGR heard, but it could either be free or involve either a one-off or subscription fee to avoid creating too much of a strong incentive to leave BlackBerry hardware.

iPads bought in last 2 weeks eligible for $100 refund
If you bought an iPad within the last two weeks, you're eligible for a $100 discount from Apple, according to website Electric Pig. There are two "catches," if you want to call them that.
First, you must have your receipt. Second, you must be within your 14-day return window. Fifteen days won't cut it. Those requesting the refund must visit an Apple Store. Apple sales reps say the process will take about two weeks.
There isn't a lot of time to request the discount, but it's better than nothing and the refund should please a lot of people. Good luck!

BlackBerry Messenger bald für iOS und Android?

Das ist doch mal einspannendes Gerücht: laut Boy Genius Report berichten diverse Quellen davon, dass RIM daran arbeitet, den BlackBerry Messenger auch auf andere Plattformen zu hieven und zwar in den App Store und den Android Market. Die Version wird wohl nicht alle Features der jetzigen haben (die sind natürlich der RIM-Hardware vorbehalten), dürfte aber trotzdem für alle interessant sein, die sich nicht recht für eine Plattform entscheiden können oder wollen. Die Android-Version soll noch dieses Jahr kommen, die iOS-Version wird wohl angesichts der restriktiveren Zulassungspolitik des App Stores erst nächstes Jahr kommen.

Apple debuted its FaceTime video calling service when it launched the iPhone 4 in June 2010. The Cupertino company faced a potential trademark conflict with FaceTime Communications, a company that delivers a unified communications platform for enterprise businesses.

Apple is refunding the price difference on some recent iPad 1 orders, accounts say. Following its announcement of the iPad 2, the company dropped prices on first-generation iPads to as little as $399 for new models, or $349 for refurbished ones. Prior to Wednesday though a new iPad 1 cost a minimum of $499, or as much as $829 for a 64GB 3G version.

BGR reports word from multiple trusted sources that RIM intends to take its BlackBerry Messenger outside the cozy confines of the BB ecosystem and straight into its competitors' app stores. Quick tip: AirPlay with unsupported apps
Back in January, we reported that Apple had begun approving third-party apps that support AirPlay, Apple's new wireless audio streaming protocol for listening to iPhone or iPad music over a speaker system hooked up to a compatible Apple networked device, such as an Apple TV or an Airport Express.
But few applications so far have released updates to take advantage of that capability. However, you can easily trick your iDevice to stream audio from an unsupported application to your stereo.

Nintendo chief slams iPhone, Android for devaluing games
Nintendo chief Satoru Iwata during his Game Developers Conference talk later on Thursday attacked the iPhone, and to a lesser extent Android, over their effect on gaming. He consciously avoided mentioning Apple or Google by name but was critical of them since gaming was strictly incidental and they had "no motivation" to keep the value up. About 92 percent of games on these platforms were free, he said, and they risked taking important income out of the business where the 3DS and DSi would keep it afloat.

I can't say that I'd call a top-down arcade shooter the best fit for the iPhone's touchscreen, but in the case of Chillingo's Sky Combat, it works. Consumer Reports tested the Verizon iPhone 4 using the same methodology as the original GSM version, and with the same results: signal strength drops if the iPhone 4 is gripped in a certain fashion, commonly known as the "death grip." As a result of its testing, Consumer Reports decided it couldn't recommend the Verizon iPhone 4, either.

iTunes 10.2 zum Download verfügbar
Als Vorbereitung für den bevorstehenden Release von iOS 4.3 am 11. März (macprime.ch berichtete) hat Apple den Download von iTunes 10.2 freigeben. Das Update ist wie gewohnt über die Softwareaktualisierung oder direkt auf apple.com/itunes verfügbar und ist 35 MB schwer. Apple stellt iOS 4.3
Im Rahmen der Keynote am gestrigen Abend hat Apple’s CEO Steve Jobs das langerwartete iOS 4.3 Software-Update für Apple’s mobiles Betriebssystem angekündigt. Das Update kann am 11. März, wahrscheinlich gegen 19.00 Uhr Schweizer Zeit (wir werden selbstverständlich darüber berichten) kostenlos via iTunes geladen und installiert werden.
Neben erheblichen Performance-Optimierungen beim Mobile-Safari erweitert Apple auch die mit iOS 4.2 eingeführte AirPlay-Funktion und bringt die iTunes Privatfreigabe auf iOS Geräte. Für ziemlichen Wirbel bei Mobilfunk-Anbietern wird das neu eingeführte Feature eines Personal-Hotspots führen.

iPad und iPad 2: die Unterschiede im Überblick

Apple hat das iPad an einigen Ecken deutlich verbessert. Die Displayauflösung hat sich nicht geändert, leider gab es auch keinen Thunderbolt-Anschluss, aber das iPad 2 ist deutlich dünner, etwas leichter und mit dem A5 mit einem 1GHz Dual-Core Prozessor ausgestattet und hat eine ziemlich flotte Grafik. Was sonst noch alles anders ist, seht ihr im Specsvergleich nach dem Break. Auch nicht unwichtig: die "alten" iPads sind jetzt 120 Euro billiger.

Just a few hours after its event in San Francisco introducing the iPad 2 and iOS 4.3, Apple has posted the streaming video of the event. The 71-minute video features a still-thin but healthy-looking Steve Jobs, Scott Forstall and others, but may still be affected by heavy traffic that hit Apple's site immediately after the announcements. What was MIA from the big iPad announcements today?
Pretty exciting stuff at the Yerba Buena Center. From where I sit the new iPad is a substantial, but not groundbreaking upgrade. I do think it has created some unpleasant drama for the Android and unshipped Blackberry tablets.
On the other hand, life is not all about fawning over every move Apple makes (despite what it feels like some days). As I step outside the reality distortion field, there were some things I wanted to see Apple include.
More storage: We've seen the iPhone storage increase over time while prices stayed the same. The iPad is sitting at the same configurations at the same price. It would have been nice to see the 16 GB iPad dropped, with the 32 GB at the lower price point.

AT&T to get iPhone Personal Hotspot with iOS 4.3 on March 11
AT&T on Wednesday night confirmed with Electronista that it would start supporting the Personal Hotspot feature in sync with the launch of iOS 4.3. Subscribers will have the same support as Verizon customers when the update pushes out to the GSM iPhone 4 on March 11. Pricing should stay the same as for basic tethering and will need its new DataPro hotspot/tethering plan, which combines 4GB of total data with connection sharing for $45.

BlackBerry PlayBook app may hint 17 hours of battery
A PlayBook Battery Assistant app found for the BlackBerry PlayBook ahead of its launch has hinted that it will have very long battery life. Comparing the battery life at 50 percent and at 20 percent, BerryReview heard the tablet would get roughly 17 hours of battery life in web browsing and a still healthy eight hours for video playback. Apple's new Digital AV Adapter: what it will and won't do
Apple introduced the iPad 2 today and along with it rolled out a few new accessories to accompany its new tablet. One new cable to hit the retail shelves is the Digital AV adapter which can be used to pipe content from your iOS device to your TV. Not just iPad 2-specific, the adapter is compatible with the iPhone 4, the original iPad, and the 4th generation iPod touch (although it is somewhat limited on those devices, see below).
One side of the adapter plugs into the 30-pin connector on your iOS device while the other connects to an HDMI cable attached to your HDTV. Right next to the HDMI plug is as a second 30-pin

Rogers: iOS 4.3 Personal Hotspot won't cost extra
Canadian carrier Rogers told Electronista on Wednesday that the Personal Hotspot feature coming to the GSM iPhone in iOS 4.3 would be free. Anyone with a plan on Rogers or Fido that already qualifies for tethering, starting at 1GB of higher, can share the connection with up to five Wi-Fi devices without affecting the price or the bandwidth. In the US, Verizon is charging $20 for the same feature and caps it at 2GB where Rogers lets users rely on caps that are as high as 5GB for regular users and 6GB for those who seized on 6GB promo plans.

Simulated Mars mission simulating return to Earth as we speak, astronauts genuinely overjoyed
We thought the Hundred Year Starship initiative to strand aged astronauts on Mars by 2030 was depressing, and in comparison the European Space Agency's Mars-500 project is little more than a walk in the park (a very small, confined, and extremely monotonous park). Essentially Bio-Dome re-written to simulate travel to Mars and back (without that lovable scamp Pauly Shore), the project bills itself as "the first full duration simulation of a manned flight to Mars," with astronauts conducting a 640-day voyage to the red planet and back -- all without leaving the Russian Academy of Sciences' Institute of Biomedical Problems (IBMP). Members of the crew "landed" on Mars on February 12th of this year,

Pentax outs Optio S1 with 14MP and high dynamic range
Pentax on Wednesday night brought out a compact camera with its own company firsts. The Optio S1 is billed as the first Pentax compact camera to have a high dynamic range mode. Its technique overlays multiple shots and both reduces the likelihood of blown-out highlights while improving the detail in shadows.

Spielszenen aus „Arcania – Fall of Setarrif“
Ein heute veröffentlichter Trailer zeigt erstmals bewegtes Bildmaterial aus den Gothic-4-Addon „ArcaniA – Fall of Setarrif “. Sehr viele Szenen gibt es in dem nur 32 Sekunden langen Video nicht zu sehen, es ermöglicht aber einen ersten Eindruck des Gameplays zu gewinnen. Zudem ist nun auch die Homepage des Addons online.

Jobs: iPad outsold all Tablet PCs ever, Samsung misquoted
Apple co-founder Steve Jobs used his iPad 2 event as a platform to criticize not just other mobile tablet makers but Microsoft as well. The original iPad's 15 million sales in 2010 not only gave it 90 percent of the market but saw it outsell every tablet to date, including Tablet PCs using Windows. Nine months was all it took to deliver "more than every tablet PC ever sold," he boasted.

New, streamlined bags already appearing for iPad 2
Laptop and travel bag makers Tom Bihn and Mivizu are among several retailers who have announced new iPad products today, and both have new, more streamlined cases for the iPad 2 that are ready for pre-order. Mivizu offers sleeve-style cases to fit the modified, thinner form factor, while Tom Bihn is offering their Breve travel case that works with either the original iPad or the new model, and offers room a phone and charger -- but not much else.

3M's 32-inch display with 10-finger multitouch steps out at CeBIT (video)
Though there are bigger multitouch screens out there -- and ones that can support more simultaneous touch points -- 3M's brand new C3266PW is the company's largest, said to be suited for industrial-strength installations with multiple simultaneous users (the company is quick to note that the ultra-wide 178-degree viewing angle along both axes is great for that, since folks can crowd around and start touching).
