White House unveils national strategy for secure internet IDs
This one's been in the works for some time now, but the White House has just today officially unveiled its plans for a national secure internet ID program -- or as it has dubbed it, the National Strategy for Trusted Identities in Cyberspace (NSTIC). Supreme Court to hear Microsoft case on tech patent validity
The US Supreme Court at a session on Monday will hear Microsoft call to change patent law in a way that could help both the Windows developer and many other technology firms fend off patent troll lawsuits. The motion will attempt to change a rule that requires a defending company provide absolute, definitive evidence that a patent is invalid in order to avoid a guilty verdict. Under Microsoft's proposal, courts could invalidate patents only by requiring that the majority of evidence supports rejecting the patent.

Printopia updated with customised settings and security
I've been a big fan of Printopia since it first came out. It allows you to print from an iOS device to any printer on a wireless network or directly connected to a Mac.
After Apple's half-hearted AirPrint feature was launched, people were pretty upset to learn that it worked on only a handful of HP printers. Printopia fixed that with an app that sits in your system preference window, and gets you printing to just about any printer you have. The app requires a Wi-Fi network for connectivity.

Apple faces lawsuit over in-app purchases by children
Apple is facing a lawsuit over its newly revised in-app purchasing policy. The suit was filed by Garen Meguerian of Pennsylvania who accuses Apple of the unlawful exploitation of children with this iOS feature.
The crux of the suit hinges on Apple's policy that uses a single password to gain access to an Apple account and make an in-app purchase. Apple's in-app purchasing policy was recently updated to require users to enter their iTunes password a second time to make a purchase following reports of children racking up thousands of dollars in iTunes purchases.
Meguerian recognizes Apple's new policy, but asserts this change is not enough. Minors

E-book sales triple year-over-year, paper books decline in every category
We're sure there are still scores of lifelong book lovers whose paper tomes we can pry from their cold, dead fingers, but the evidence strongly suggests that plenty of others are rapidly warming to their shiny new e-readers. US sales of e-books generated about $90.3 million in revenue in February -- roughly triple the sales reported in the same month last year. Google Music negotiations have 'gone backwards,' may be over
Google Music's progress may have not only stalled but backfired if a leak Friday is accurate. A change in terms over the past few weeks may have seen progress "gone backwards" as the two sides couldn't reach a deal. Skype acknowledges Android privacy vulnerability, says it's 'working quickly' on a fix
The results were certainly tough to deny, and now Skype has come forward and acknowledged that there is indeed a rather serious vulnerability in Skype for Android that could let malicious third-party applications access your personal information. Unfortunately, it's not offering much else in the way of help just yet, with it saying only that it is "working quickly" to protect folks from the vulnerability, and that they should simply be cautious of third-party apps in the meantime.

IK Multimedia has launched a v3.5 update to its amp and effects modeling software, AmpliTube, simultaneously introducing the Custom Shop. Brazilian police live out Robocop fantasies, test glasses that scan for criminals
In advance of the 2016 Olympics (and the thousands of visitors it'll draw), military police in Sao Paolo and Rio de Janeiro are testing glasses topped with cameras capable of scanning crowds for criminals. The camera analyzes 46,000 biometric points on up to 400 faces per second -- data that then gets compared with a database of 13 million people. If a mug happens to match a wanted person or known troublemaker, a red light will appear on a small screen connected to the glasses. And, in a twist particularly befitting Robocop, the glasses can be calibrated to zoom in from 12 miles away, though they'll typically be used to manage crowds at a much more personal 50 meters (164 feet). iOS and Android gained video game market share in 2010
Flurry, a mobile analytics service, combined its mobile application data with published data from the NPD group and others, to show that Android and iOS captured a growing portion of the video game market share in 2010. According to the firm's analysis, iOS and Android game sales increased from 5% in 2009 to 8% in 2010 and revenue increased from US$500 million to $800 million in that same yearly period. Flurry claims that mobile game revenue in 2010 surpassed the estimated $700 million earned from PC game sales.

If you'll recall, this here Android tablet was actually introduced at the front-end of the year, but it remains one for the business sect. Windows 8 to get push notifications, run OS from USB drives
More features of Windows 8 have emerged from discoveries in a liked Milestone 1 build. The OS is now known to have a "push notification platform" that would would send alarms and other notices from a remote server to the app in question, much as on iOS. Cirrus Logic copes with problems for Apple 'audio product'

New class action suit adds to complaints over app payments
Apple is once again coming under legal fire for its approach to in-app purchases. A Pennsylvania man, Garen Maguerian, has reportedly filed a new class action suit, accusing Apple of being negligent in managing in-app purchases. webOS auf einem Tablet sieht wirklich schick aus. Das war zumindest der erste Eindruck, als wir das HP TouchPad unter die Lupe nahmen. Da scheint alles gut proportioniert auf dem 9,7" Display mit 1024x768 Pixel Auflösung. Ein gar nicht unwitziges Feature ist das Webseiten funken, wie oben auf dem Bild zu sehen. Hat man bspw. auf dem webOS-Handybrowser eine Seite offen, kann sie mit netter Wellengrafikanimation auf das TouchPad und vice versa gefunkt werden und erscheint auf dem jeweiligen Display

ViewSonic G Tablet overclocked to 1.4GHz, goes on sale to celebrate
The G Tablet hasn't been getting much attention of late, slowly fading into obscurity as newer and fancier slates come floating on down the river. Now, thanks to XDA member pershoot, Viewsonic's Tegra 2 tab has a little extra spring in its step. He's managed to get it running at 1.4GHz (a 40 percent boost over stock) and, with the ability to run CyanogenMod 7, this 10.1-incher is definitely earning a reputation as something of a hacker's delight. Now it's even easier to afford, too, with Amazon knocking the price down to $280. Cheap and tweakable? Really, it doesn't get any better than that.

EU-Generalanwalt: Internetsperren bedürfen gesetzlicher Grundlage
Pedro Cruz Villalón, Generalanwalt am Gerichtshof der Europäischen Union (EuGH), hat entschieden, dass Internetsperren unzulässig sind, wenn kein entsprechendes Gesetz vorliegt. Korean search firms launch antitrust cases against Android
Google faced mounting signs of antitrust concern on Friday as two South Korean search engine firms filed complaints with the country's Fair Trade Commission over Android. Die Gerüchte wollen einfach nicht aufhören. Das W15 - von dem es mehr oder weniger diesen einen Verpackungsshot gibt - wird in der Gerüchteküche schon mit allerlei Details gehandelt. Android 2.3, 600MHz Prozessor, 3-Zoll Bildschirm, spezieller Player-Button und natürlich Touchscreen. iOS, Android cut deeper into Nintendo and Sony game revenue
Smartphone platforms have been deepening their impact on Nintendo and Sony game revenue, Flurry said in a new study. The combination of Android and iOS jumped from five percent of all video game revenue in 2009 to eight percent last year. Combined with a resurgence in TV gaming, the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP lines had their total revenue share cut back from 24 percent to just 16 percent.

JP Morgan ups Q2 estimates based on iPhone, Mac
JP Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz has raised his estimates for Apple's second fiscal quarter, for instance boosting revenue from $23.83 billion to $24.42 billion. EPS has been bumped from $5.21 to $5.39. One of the primary drivers of the change is the iPhone, which Moskowitz now expects to show sales of 18.4 million units instead of 16.6 million. The launch of a Verizon model plus "broader channel fill" for the GSM phone is believed to be responsible.

Eigenwillige Idee, aber nicht die erste in dieser Richtung diw wir sehen. Rollei ist allerdings mal ein bekannterer Name in dem Business. Das 8-fach Zoom funktioniert wie eine Hülle für das ganze iPhone 4 und muss per Hand scharfgestellt werden. Und falls das nicht für ein unverwackeltes Bild reicht, gibt es ein Tischstativ mit dazu. Für 35 Euro kann man das als iPhone Hobbyphotograph schon mal testen. Die Bilder kommen hinterher ja eh in den Instagram-Schredder. Ab April zu haben.

iPhone Geiger Counter would benefit Japan, needs Kickstarter love
The folks at RDTN have organized a Kickstarter project to fund the development and deployment of radiation detectors in Japan. The project uses an iPhone hacked to work with a variety of radiation detectors. The radiation units (shown here) will be sent into the field and used to collect data on radiation contamination in the Tsunami-ravaged country.
Since the detectors use an iPhone, they are easy for the average person with minimal technical knowledge to operate. Japanese residents who accept these counters are required to take readings eight to ten times a day and report their data back to RDTN's website. The readings are compiled by RDTN and made accessible to non-profit organizations, governments and scientists.

LG steps into Nokia void to develop handset version of MeeGo
Sure, Nokia will ship a single MeeGo handset this year. But after that, MeeGo, Nokia's previous strategic smartphone platform, will be pushed into the incubation lab as the team shifts focus to future user experiences. US-Suchmarkt: Google und Bing wachsen im März
Laut der aktuellen Comscore-Statistik für den amerikanischen Suchmaschinenmarkt sind die Anteile von Google und Microsofts Bing im März um 0,3 Prozent gegenüber Februar gewachsen. Sony ships 50 million PlayStation 3s, eight million Move controllers worldwide
Sony has a couple of sweet, sweet numbers to report with regard to sales of its gaming hardware. The PlayStation 3, that venerable old powerhouse of console gaming, has surpassed 50 million units shipped around the globe, while the PS Move controller introduced in September of last year has also kept pace and rounded a milestone of its own with eight million units shipped. We say "shipped," in spite of Sony calling these sales, because Sony's interpretation of these numbers is sales to retailers, not end users (what the company calls "sell-in numbers"), so they're not directly comparable with retail sales of the competition. Still, numbers are numbers, and these are pretty big ones.

Google bleibt trotz Umsatzplus hinter Erwartungen zurück
Google hat im ersten Quartal 2011 einen Bruttoumsatz von 8,58 Milliarden Dollar (5,93 Milliarden Euro) erzielt, 27 Prozent mehr als im Vorjahreszeitraum. Der GAAP-Nettogewinn kletterte um 17 Prozent auf 2,3 Milliarden Dollar (1,6 Milliarden Euro). Trotz der Zuwächse blieb der Non-GAAP-Gewinn von 8,08 Dollar je Aktie hinter den Erwartungen von Analysten zurück, die 8,10 Dollar je Aktie vorausgesagt hatten.

We had to check but the Charlie Chaplin tribute isn't the first video doodle to grace the Google home page. That honor was bestowed upon John Lennon to celebrate his 70th birthday. His video, however, was just an animation whereas Google's latest doodle dials up the frame rate to recreate the lovable tramp's antics in a very Google way. Just remember: a $2 muffin from 100 years ago would cost about $47 today without AdSense support. Microsoft schraubt die Spezifikationen für Windows Phone 7 rauf

Als wäre ein Snapdragon nicht genug, hat Windows gerade die Grundvoraussetzungen für die neuen Windows Phone 7 auf der MIX hochgesetzt. Nicht mehr der MSM8x50 ist es, sondern der MSM8x55 mit Adreno 205 GPU (statt vorher Adreno 200). Ein Chip der schon in einigen Androids steckt, wie dem Xperia Play, oder HTC Thunderbolt. Obendrein darf es auch der im November angekündigte MSM7x30 Snapdragon sein, damit die 3D Freunde nicht zu kurz kommen. Der wurde bislang nur in T-Mobile G2 verbaut. Hey. Apple Updates für iOS, Safari, Mac OS X und Xcode
Apple gestern Abend diverse Updates freigegeben: das iPhone-Betriebssystem iOS wurde auf Version 4.3.2, Apples Webbrowser Safari auf Version 5.0.5 und die Entwicklungsumgebung Xcode auf Version 4.0.2 aktualisiert. Zudem gibt es für Mac OS X ein neues Security-Update.
iOS 4.3.2 Software-Update
Das Update enthält Verbesserungen und Fehlerbehebungen. Es behebt ein Problem, bei dem die Videowiedergabe bei FaceTime gelegentlich leer oder hängen blieb. Des weiteren behebt es ein Problem, das bei einigen Benutzern auf dem iPad WiFi+3G die Verbindung zu 3G-Netzwerken verhinderte und enthält last-but-not-least die neusten Sicherheitsupdates. Das iOS-4.3.2-Update kann via iTunes geladen werden und ist ca. 666 MB gross.

Now one of them, at least, is coming out of the woodwork -- ASUS said it plans to ship a "series of products" with these optical touchscreens later this year. What does this mean for consumers? iOS 4.3 brought us Home Sharing that allows you to share iTunes libraries on up to five authorized computers on the same network and have them show up on your iPhone, iPod touch and iPad. But if you have more than one Mac with a library to share, you may be in the same boat I found myself in. I have three Macs, but Home Sharing would only bring up one library both my iPhone and iPad. After I wrote a post about the changes in Lion's Dictionary app and made suggestions about how Apple could still improve it, I got a nice email from a reader asking if I would write an article about some other writing tools I use. One of my favorites is Visual Thesaurus by Thinkmap.

Hackers achieve tethered jailbreak for iOS 4.3.2
Owners of iPhone 4, original iPad, second-generation Apple TV and third- or fourth-generation iPod Touches have a limited ability to jailbreak the devices and run iOS 4.3.2, just released earlier today, with some caveats and drawbacks. RIM: claims BlackBerry PlayBook rushed out aren't 'fair'
RIM's co-CEOs shot back at mixed early BlackBerry PlayBook reviews that savaged the tablet for the unfinished state of its software. The company's Jim Balsille didn't believe it was "fair" that people attacked the PlayBook for the lack of native e-mail, calendaring and other core apps. The device was perfectly usable by the roughly 60 million existing BlackBerry owners, he told Bloomberg, as they could bridge their phone to the PlayBook and check the information stored on the BlackBerry itself.

Perian QuickTime plugin updated; A must-have for every Mac
Yesterday Perian updated its QuickTime plugin for the Mac. For those of you who don't know about it, Perian is a plugin allowing Mac users to view a virtually unlimited number of video codecs in QuickTime Player. Among the codecs are AVI, DIVX, FLV, MKV, GVI, VP6, and VFW, just to name a few.
The 1.2.2 update adds compatibility with WebM/VP8, compressed MKV files, and FFv1 lossless video formats. Perian 1.2.2 requires Mac OS X 10.4.7 or later. But users of older Mac OS versions are forewarned -- this is the last version of Perian that will support PowerPC Macs or any Mac running Mac OS X 10.5 and below. Going forward, future releases of Perian will only support Intel Macs running Mac OS X 10.6 or higher. Perian is a free download.

Flipboard lands $50 million, plans iPhone and Android ports
Flipboard on Thursday confirmed that it had taken a $50 million investment based on a $200 million valuation. The company received money chiefly from Insight Venture Partners as well as Comcast and a host of major and minor investors, ranging from Kleiner Perkins through to Twitter's Jack Dorsey, Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz and Ashton Kutcher. If there's one company that will hit a trillion dollar market cap, it will be Apple, according to USA Today. Apple could do it in the next three years. USA Today came up with Apple's trillion dollar market cap based on its five-year geometric mean average increase of 59% a year. So given today's market value of about $310bn, if Apple continues to increase in value by 59% each year, in 2014, we'll have the first trillion dollar company. How huge is that? The most valuable company ever was Microsoft in 2000. That year it hit a $604 billion market cap.

Apple hires Microsoft Data Center manager
You can add even more kindling to the rumor fire burning around Apple's new data center in North Carolina. AllThingsD reports that the company picked up Kevin Timmons as a new employee; he's been working as Microsoft's Manager of Data Center services since 2009. iCade iPad arcade cabinet one step closer to late May release
It's almost here! Sources report that Ion Audio's iCade arcade cabinet for the iPad has passed FCC approval, just in time for the planned release on May 31. The cabinet was originally seen as an April Fool's Day joke on ThinkGeek, but in the past few years it's steadily moved towards reality, and will soon be available for $100 from that site, along with partners Ion Audio and Atari, who've already released over 100 retro games ready to be played on it.

Google: 3b Android apps installed, 350,000 new devices a day
Google during its fiscal results call on Thursday revealed that three billion Android apps have been downloaded since the platform launched in October 2008. Senior Commerce and Local VP Jeff Huber didn't say how many had been downloaded in the winter but said the figure was a 50 percent surge from the fall. The install is believed, but not confirmed, to include all stores and not just Android Market.
