Extra rumors back iPhone 5 skipping WWDC 2011
Further rumors on Monday supported beliefs that the iPhone 5 wouldn't be at WWDC 2011. Both a claim by AllThingsD] and a similar anecdote from Engadget both cite their own sources that the June 6 event would focus strictly on iOS and Mac OS X. Most presume the smartphone will instead get its appearance at the normally iPod-oriented annual music event in September.

Review: OtterBox iPhone 4 Defender Series case
MacNN has reviewed the OtterBox iPhone 4 Defender Series case, a three-part ruggedized product that mostly -- but not completely -- seals an iPhone off from the elements. The gear incorporates an internal hard case with a built-in screen protector that combines with an outer silicon wrapper. In theory this protects an iPhone from falls, impacts and to some degree dust and water.

Bomb threat at Apple's Elk Grove distribution center
A bomb threat was called in to Apple's Elk Grove, California distribution center today. The threat was called in around 8 AM Pacific time. The Elk Grove distribution center is used for warehousing and human resources. According to AppleInsider, the threat caused the evacuation of buildings A, B, and C on the campus.
Elk Grove police officer Chris Trim told Fox 40 news that four bomb-sniffing dogs were sent in to search the 100,000 square foot buildings. After five hours the local police felt there was no real danger and the all clear was given for employees to return to the buildings. There is no wor

Pioneer outs earbuds with active noise cancellation
Pioneer has released a set of in-ear headphones that have active noise-cancelling. The SE-NC31C-k headphones are said to eliminate 90 percent of all external noise and features 14.3mm drivers. The active noise cancellation feature is powered by one AAA battery that can power the device for 120 hours.

Amazon attempts to lure iOS developers to Kindle platform
Amazon is courting iOS developers in a bid to get them to produce apps for the Kindle, one developer tells MacNN. Henri Hansen, the creator of Atomium, claims to have received an email from Amazon inviting him to port his app to the Kindle platform. The company is allegedly interested in educational apps such as Hansen's, which displays data on the periodic table of elements.

WWDC 2011 unlikely to launch hardware, iPhone 5 may be later this year
Each year we set our calendars to expect new hardware announcements around WWDC, if not actually during Apple's annual developers' conference. Last year we got a glimpse of the iPhone 4 in action. At WWDC 2009, the 3GS was announced. Naturally many of us thought the iPhone 5 would appear at WWDC 2011, but as mentioned earlier, knowledgable sources cited by Jim Dalrymple say we shouldn't expect any hardware announcements at the keynote.

Shocker! Sprint officially opposes AT&T's proposed acquisition of T-Mobile
Yes, you read that right. Sprint is actually going out on a limb and officially opposing AT&T's proposed acquisition of T-Mobile USA. Apparently, it thinks that the transaction would "reduce competition and harm consumers" if it's allowed to go through, and it's vowing to "fight this attempt by AT&T to undo the progress of the past 25 years and create a new Ma Bell duopoly." Sprint objects to AT&T/T-Mobile deal as 'Ma Bell duopoly'
Sprint on Monday put out a formal statement objecting to AT&T's buyout of T-Mobile. The carrier said it planned to resist the deal where possible and reiterated its earlier view that the move would put too much power in one company and give AT&T three times the revenue. Government Affairs Senior VP Vonya McCann stopped short of implying legal action but said an approval would turn back a quarter century and return to the days of AT&T's monopoly of the US phone business pre-1984, with Verizon being the only other choice.

No iPhone 5 at WWDC this year? That's how it looks from here
By now you've seen the announcement for WWDC 2011 (coming June 6th), but what you may not have heard yet is that this one is going to be a little different than some of the dev cons from years past. Namely, unlike the events in 2008 through 2010, you won't see the announcement of a new iPhone (or iPad or anything else hardware related). iPad 2 loses water damage indicator at headphone jack
While Apple has been softening their policy on water damage for some iOS devices, any trip to the Apple Store for a repair may still entail a little anxiety about the water indicators reporting a problem -- even when you know that your device hasn't been exposed to any liquids.

MIT professor touts first 'practical' artificial leaf, signs deal with Tata to show up real plants
A professor at MIT claims to have Mother Nature beat at her own game. Dr. Daniel Nocera says his invention is ten times more efficient at photosynthesis than a real-life leaf, and could help to bring affordable alternative energy to developing countries. Described as an "advanced solar cell the size of a poker card," the device is made of silicon, electronics, and inexpensive catalysts made of nickel and cobalt. When placed in a gallon of water under direct sunlight, the catalysts break the H2O down into hydrogen and oxygen gases, which are then stored in a fuel cell -- the energy produced is apparently enough to power a single house for a day. Bomb threat forces evacuation of Apple Sacramento offices
A bomb threat at an Apple distribution center in Elk Grove, California -- on the outskirts of Sacramento -- today triggered the evacuation of three buildings, according to AppleInsider sources. Specifically the A, B and C buildings on the eastern side of the facility were reportedly cleared out at about 9:30AM local time. By 11:30, emergency crews were still said to be in the area.

First East coast Microsoft store due in Atlanta, near Apple
Microsoft started off the week with plans for its first East coast retail store. Its ninth shop will open at Atlanta's Lenox Square Mall, sometime in the spring and most likely in April. In keeping with Microsoft's practices, Apple also has a store in the same location and is likely the primary incentive for the new shop.

Japanese factory shutdown crimps iPod battery supply
Apple has been coping with "tight" supplies of lithium ion batteries, according to the Wall Street Journal. A representative from the company is said to have recently contacted the US offices of Kureha, a Japanese company which controls 70 percent of the marketshare for a polymer called polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), used as a binder in lithium ion batteries. The only Kureha factory which produces PVDF is based in Iwaki, and was forced to shut down on March 11th after being hit by that day's 9.0 earthquake.

AT&T slashes Windows Phone 7 prices again in new sale
AT&T kicked off another promo on Monday that hinted at lingering issues for Windows Phone 7 sales. Both the LG Quantum and Samsung Focus have dropped to $50 on contract for the sale. FaceTime is the star in The Blue Stones music video
And now for something completely different: a music video featuring FaceTime on an pair of iPhone 4s.
Canadian duo The Blue Stones created their video for the song "I'm A Stereo" using the iPhone 4s, FaceTime, and strategically-placed duct tape. The latter was used to cover up the name info on the phones, but there's no hiding the fact that the band members are guitarist/vocalist Tarek Jafar and drummer/backup vocalist Justin Tessier.
It's a pretty catchy song and video, and shows once again just how embedded Apple technology is in our popular culture. Enjoy the video on the next page, and remember when these guys become The Next Big Thing that you saw 'em here on TUAW.

WWDC 2011 Software-zentriert, keine neue Hardware?
Nachdem vorhin die diesjährige Worldwide Developer's Conference (WWDC) für Juni angekündigt wurde, tauchen nun Gerüchte auf, es werde keine neue Hardware vorgestellt werden. iPads, iPods und Macs werden auf WWDCs aufgrund ihrer Produktzyklen sowieso eher selten vorgestellt, dennoch läuft das iPhone auch allgemein unter Hardware und das neue iPhone wäre somit dieses Jahr extrem verspätet, wenn nicht sogar ganz hinfällig.Dazu würden auch die gestrigen Gerüchte vom diesjährigen größeren iOS-Update, welches normal immer mit dem neuen iPhone erscheint, passen. American Express challenges PayPal with 'Serve' digital payment platform
American Express may have been lagging a bit behind the likes of Visa and Mastercard with digital payments over the years, but it's making a pretty big play in the field today. It's just announced its new "Serve" digital payment platform, which is more or less a straight-on competitor to PayPal. Apple already expanding iPad 2 to Radio Shack on Tuesday
An internal corporate memo has revealed that Apple is already planning to expand the iPad 2's US retail spread with a deal for Radio Shack. About 500 stores US-wide are due to start carring the tablets Tuesday, March 29. Analysis: 100 million iPhone 5s could be sold
It's no secret that Apple's iPhone is a runaway hit. But if past history can determine future success, you ain't seen nothin' yet.
The word comes down from Asymco analyst Horace Didieu. In a whimsically-named report titled "Predicting iPhone Sales for Dummies," Didieu looked at sales data from all iPhone models to date, and noted that they followed a specific trend as old model production transitioned into building the new model.
Based on the trends, Didieu made some rough forecasts -- the iPhone 4 will sell anywhere from 60 to 65 million units before the next iPhone debuts, and it has at least one more quarter of production life left (although some websites are pushing the iPhone 5 launch back to 2012). Over at

Netflix Canada gets much-needed deal for Paramount movies
Netflix significantly boosted its presence in Canada on Monday. The movie streaming service said it had landed a multi-year deal to bring new movie and TV shows to the service's streaming-only service in the country, covering about 350 titles that include more recent movies like Iron Man 2 and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Intel upgraded its mainstream SSDs in large fashion on Monday through the SSD 320. Students at the FH Wedel campus in Germany have built a motion-controlled, life-sized version of the Fruit Ninja game for iOS devices, according to TheGadgetSite. 10.6.7 update causes OpenType font issues
There's a thread on Apple's Discussion Boards suggesting that Mac OS X 10.6.7 introduces issues with OpenType PostScript fonts when it comes to printing and PDF handling. Kurt Lang writes:

DARPA's Urban Photonic Sandtable Display enables 3D battlefield planning without goofy glasses
You probably point and laugh at your friends when they have big, bulky 3D glasses perched on their noses in theaters. That kind of tomfoolery just won't do amongst the military brass, who frown at the slightest hint of snickering in the operations room. Ovum: Windows Phone überholt Blackberry bis 2016
Die strategische Partnerschaft zwischen Nokia und Microsoft wird Windows Phone 7 bis 2016 ordentlich Schub verleihen. If you follow our tech startup sister site TechCrunch, or if you've read any of the reports from the South by SouthWest (SXSW) conference this year, you've probably seen a lot of column inches given to current-media-darling "group messaging" apps. SXSW has a reasonable track record of predicting the Next Big Thing. AmEx outs Serve mobile payments for Android, Facebook, iOS
American Express dipped into digital payments on Monday by unveiling Serve. Want to be eligible for an Apple Design Award? There are two App Stores for that
Last year's Apple Design Awards were met with a minor brouhaha, as Apple restricted eligibility to apps in the iOS App Store. This year Mac apps are eligible, with a caveat.
The WWDC FAQ states that "Apps must be available on the App Store by May 23, 2011, to be considered for an Apple Design Award." Which App Store is Apple talking about? Both, actually. The ADA home page states, "This year's Apple Design Awards will be awarded to developers whose iPhone, iPad, and Mac apps are currently on the App Store and demonstrate excellence"
Of course, if your Mac apps are ineligible for inclusion

Google tapping LG for Nexus Tablet, blocking 2.x to 3.0?
An assertion from well-known leaker Eldar Murtazin would have LG tapped to make the official, reference Android 3.0 tablet. Die Nachfolger der „Postville“-SSDs von Intel sollen bereits in Kürze auf den Markt kommen. TRIM-Funktion für SSD-Festplatten in Snow Leopard aktivieren – so geht’s
In der Entwickler-Preview-Version von Mac OS X Lion wurde die TRIM-Funktion entdeckt, die allerdings nur für Apple-SSD-Festplatten aktiviert wird. Seit dem kürzlich erschienenen Snow Leopard-Update auf Version 10.6.7 ist dieses SSD-Feature auch in der Vorgängerversion enthalten. Sie muss zwar manuell freigeschaltet werden, funktioniert dafür aber mit allen SSDs, die diesen Befehl unterstützen.

Google's trials of NFC-based phone payments gained more tangible details through a leak early Monday. The plan described by the WSJ would allow Citigroup debit and MasterCard credit card owners to make payments by swiping a Nexus S, or future Android 2.3 phones with NFC, near a reader at the counter. We last covered the iOS RSS reader Byline back in May of last year, when it had just hit version 3. Now the app's been updated to version 4, and it's still an excellent RSS reader for both the iPhone and the iPad. Version 4 brought universal capability to the free version of the app (it has ads, though you can get rid of them for just a few bucks). The new version also adds an easy way to "Mark All as Read" (just slide the "Edit" button), and the 4.0 release (as well as the minor releases after it) fix all kinds of bugs and add in some performance improvements.

SWITL scoops oozy goop with amazing robotic precision (video)
Look, sometimes, not often, but sometimes we'll miss a truly spectacular and mind bending story that requires a double-back. The SWITL robotic hand is just such a case. The patent-pending technology looks to have been revealed on video back in late October showing the Furukawa Kikou robot deftly lifting a ketchup and mayonnaise mess from a table and then replacing it unchanged from its original shape. The tech was developed for bakeries with the intention of automating the handling of soft substances that were either too malleable or too icky for human hands to handle. Unfortunately, Furukawa Kikou isn't providing any details about the science behind SWITL so we'll just assume that it's Satan's work until otherwise informe

Apple erhöht für iPad die Stromstärke bei USB-Anschlüssen
Mit der Vorstellung der neuen MacBook Pro mit Thunderbolt-Anschluss hat Apple einher auch die Stromstärke der USB-Anschlüsse erhöht. Einem Bericht von 9 to 5 Mac zufolge wird dies erst bei Anschluss eines iPad ersichtlich. Nokia hat eine neue Typografie. Sie nennt sich Nokia Pure und löst damit die alte Nokia Sans ab, die aber auch allmählich in die Jahre gekommen ist und Symbian-Nutzern immer das Gefühl gab ein wenig hinten dran zu sein. Gestaltet wurden die Zeichen vom Schweizer Designer Bruno Maag (Dalton Maag). Noch ist nicht klar, welches Gerät zuerst mit dem Typeface-Relaunch kommen wird, auch nicht, ob die kommenden Nokia Windows Phone 7 Modelle eine eigene Typo erhalten werden. Australische Premierministerin lässt Webmail-Dienste blockieren

Rumor: MobileMe media locker $20 a year, Warner onboard
An industry publication claimed in a previously unmentioned rumor this past week that Apple had been making progress on its rumored MobileMe media locker. The service purportedly wouldn't be free but would drop to $20 per year. A rare, never-used and still-in-box Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh, designed by present-day Apple design head Jonathan Ive, has turned up on Ebay for auction. The unit is one of the 11,601 machines sold to customers outside Apple. The four smaller accessory boxes have been opened for inspection, but all components are still in their original packaging.

Ainol Honeycomb tablet surfaces with Cortex A9 processor, buttons aplenty
It's been quite a while since Ainol last popped up on our radar, but it looks like the company is now busy preparing a Honeycomb tablet that might actually stand out from the pack -- for better or worse. According to a couple of teasers that have cropped up in recent days, the tablet will apparently pack an ARM Cortex A9 processor, a 1,280 x 800 IPS display of unspecified size, WiFi and 3G connectivity, a microSD card slot, HDMI out and, most noticeably, a full suite of buttons that adorn a what appears to be a somewhat chunky design. Still no indication of a price, but the tablet is apparently due out sometime next month.

Gut zwei Wochen nach dem letzten iOS-Update auf 4.3 schiebt Apple Version 4.3.1 hinterher. Das Update bringt keine neuen Funktionen, dafür einige Fehlerbehebungen und soll auch die zuletzt mit 4.3 bei einigen Benutzern wieder etwas ‘suboptimalere’ Batterielaufzeit verbessern. Das Update erschien für das iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, den iPod touch dritter und vierter Generation sowie für das iPad und iPad 2 und kann via iTunes geladen werden.
