Verizon and MetroPCS objections to FCC net neutrality rules dismissed in case of premature litigation
The FCC wants to put new rules in place ensuring access to the web is, like justice, blind to where a person is coming from and indifferent to where on the web he is going to. Verizon's first reaction to these new directives was to publicly decry them as overreaching, and its second was to file a lawsuit, one that was swiftly echoed by MetroPCS. iPad 2 ship times decrease to 2-3 weeks
Shipping times on Apple's website for new iPad 2 orders have decreased to two to three weeks as of this morning. That's a far cry from the four to five weeks that the store stated shortly after the iPad 2 went on sale. The new shipping times apply to all eighteen models of the iPad -- white, black, Wi-Fi, AT&T, and Verizon. It also appears that the two to three week shipping time is universal across Apple's online stores worldwide as UK and Australian stores, among others, are showing similar two to three week shipping times.

Verizon, MetroPCS anti-neutrality cases tossed on details
The FCC claimed a minor victory Monday after a US federal appeals court tossed attempts by Verizon and MetroPCS to challenge its net neutrality order. The US agency took advantage of technicalities as both of the carriers had complained before the neutrality rules were entered in the Federal Register. Court judges said the early filings were "incurable" and had to be dismissed outright.

Analysts challenge Sony supplying iPhone 5 cameras
OmniVision will get a lock on supplying cameras for the iPhone 5, not Sony, two analysts claim. Needham's Rajvindra Gill insists that people have "grossly misinterpreted" comments by Sony head Howard Stringer, who let slip that shipments of camera sensors to Apple would be delayed. Apple currently relies on OmniVision for iPhone camera sensors.

Facebook app is updated; now you can unfriend while mobile
Facebook has updated its popular iOS app today. The 3.4 version of the app adds several new features, the foremost of which lets you unfriend people right from your iPhone. Besides making it easier to get rid of those annoying "friends," the updated app also features a new map view for places, the ability to check in to Events that you're attending, an improved News Feed, and an improved notifications UI.
I was also going to include a screen shot of the new map view in Places, but at of the time of this writing the Facebook app keeps crashing when I try to view the map.
For those of you holding out hope that each new Facebook app updated might bring universal compatibility to the app, you're going to have to hope a little longer as

Pandora says government investigating smartphone app privacy
Pandora in an SEC filing on Monday revealed that a federal grand jury was investigating the privacy of Android and iPhone apps. A subpoena earlier this year had asked it for data on how it was sharing information as part of a larger look at Android and iOS. The Internet radio provider wasn't a subject of the investigation, but it was inclined to believe there was an investigation underway on an "industry-wide basis."

Apple Store security guard kills smash-and-grab suspect
A security guard, hired by Apple, has shot dead a suspect in a botched Apple Store robbery early Monday, according to NBC. The incident began shortly before 7AM at the Otay Ranch outlet in Chula Vista, California. The guard is said to have confronted two men and a woman who were caught smashing in the store's front doors. A firefight erupted after one of the suspects drew a handgun, the guard claims.

AT&T and Verizon join National Clear Fleet Program, thumb their noses at petrol
Thought the Prez was just kidding about those alternative fuel initiatives? Think again. Just hours after stating that the US government fleet would be 100 percent alternative fuel, hybrid, or electric vehicles by 2015, Obama has announced the National Clean Fleets Partnership, an initiative of the Department's Clean Cities program. It's a rather unique public-private partnership, and it'll be assisting large companies to "reduce diesel and gasoline use in their fleets by incorporating electric vehicles, alternative fuels, and fuel-saving measures into their operations."

Financial Times hopes to avoid iTunes subscription rules
Despite a few objections after Apple announced its subscription setup for iOS apps, the service is underway -- developers and publishers can sell content subscriptions through the App Store, and of course Apple gets a 30% cut. One publisher is still holding out: the UK's Financial Times still hopes to sell its own subscriptions on the iPad, without giving Apple its due. The publisher already has 590k subscribers on its website, and is reportedly in negotiations with Apple right now to keep all of those for itself rather than sharing any part of them with Apple.

Kyocera Katsura 'gaming tablet' blurs for the camera
This one's about as mysterious as you'd expect from the image above but, according to Android Community, that black slab you see is Kyocera's new Katsura "gaming tablet." Not many other details at the moment, but it is apparently Android-based, and it has what appears to be a rubbery matte black back adorned with a stylized design of some sort. A bit of an oddity, to be sure, but stranger things have come out of Kyocera recently. Apple expands App Store trademark in Europe
Two filings published by the European Trademark Office last week suggest the battle for the term "App Store" will expand to new product categories and new turf. Patently Apple reports that the first request from Apple, filed on March 30, expands the use of the term "App Store" from four international classes to ten. The second application, filed on March 31, covers the App Store graphic much like the image pictured here.

Shipping times for the iPad 2 are continuing to accelerate, a check at Apple's US online store shows. All models, regardless of capacity or connection support, are now listed as going out from the company in 2 to 3 weeks. PlayStation websites, PSN suffer outage: Anonymous claims responsibility, Sony claims 'sporadic maintenance'
Been having trouble with the PlayStation Network or any Sony website today? You're not alone. A widespread outage that started in Europe last night has now spread to North America, and none other than Anonymous is claiming responsibility for the attacks. As you can see above, however, Sony is singing a slightly different tune, and says simply that "sporadic maintenance" may cause PSN service to be interrupted throughout the day. Because, really, you can never do too much "sporadic" maintenance.

Sprint pips others with plans for phone payments over NFC
Sprint on Monday detailed plans to pip most US carriers and some phone makers to using NFC (Near Field Communication) for mobile payments. The system would make an end-run around the Ibis system proposed by the other three major US carriers but would be open and try to lure companies in by changing how payments would work. Product platforms VP Kevin McGinnis explained to Bloomberg that it would drop the usual up-front revenue split in favor of sharing revenue from ads or coupons.

Toyota advertising through jailbroken iOS devices
Toyota is advertising the Scion brand through Cydia, the most common distribution platform for unofficial iOS apps, reports claim. In particular Toyota is said to have released a "Scion 2011 Theme" in the Cydia store; the code makes radical changes to the appearance of iOS, replacing original app icons and even the swipe-to-unlock bar. Shooting at Apple Store in San Diego leaves one robbery suspect dead
NBC's San Diego affiliate is reporting that an early-morning attempted theft at the Apple Store at Otay Ranch Town Center turned deadly when one of the alleged participants in the smash-and-grab attempt was shot and killed by a security guard.
Police told the TV station that the incident occurred right before 7 am Pacific Time this morning, before the store was open. The store manager was already working inside the store when three suspects smashed the glass doors at the front of the store; they were confronted by the guard. The guard told police that the exchange of fire began when one of the suspects produced a handgun.

Leaks confirm Nikon D5100 launch, ME-1 microphone add-on
Nikon's plans to launch the D5100 tonight were inadvertently confirmed by a Romanian site's premature posting of an article. While the core text from Nikonisti has been retracted, copies archived online have confirmed that it would use the 16.2-megapixel sensor of the D7000 while getting the newly upgraded swiveling screen. Earlier slips had pointed to it keeping the costs down using the 11-point autofocus of the D3100 but still having 1080p video.

Study: 86% of Android developers say fragmentation a problem
A fresh study from Baird venture capitalist William Powers has suggested that 86 percent of Android developers see OS version fragmentation as a problem. Only 14 percent of the 250 developers asked didn't see it as an issue, while 57 percent either saw it as a "meaningful" or a "huge" problem. He added that some were also worried about store fragmentation triggered by the Amazon Appstore and other portals.

MacBook Air projected to earn $2.2 billion per year
Analyst Mark Moskowitz with J.P. Morgan predicts the MacBook Air will be a $2.2 billion cash cow for Apple in 2011. The MacBook Air exploded onto the scene in late 2010 with a smaller form factor and a reasonable base price. Moskowitz notes that Apple sold 420,000 units in the last few months of 2010, a 333 percent year-over-year increase. The diminutive MacBook Air accounted for ten percent of total Mac units sold and 15 percent of its notebook sales.

Google bids $900 million for Nortel patent portfolio, will use it as shield against patent trolls
Google and Nortel have agreed on the princely sum of $900 million to start off a "stalking horse" auction -- wherein outside parties are still free to outdo Google's bid -- for the acquisition of Nortel's rather vast patent portfolio. AT&T hikes early upgrade prices
Mobile phone carriers have always had early upgrade pricing. In other words, if you purchase a phone with a two-year contract but want to get a newer model after a year, you generally pay a surcharge to do so.

Dass das Studio Art Lebedev immer auch ein bisschen Kunst war, daraus haben die russischen Macher nie einen großen Hehl gemacht. Nun kommt das Designbüro mit etwas gänzlich Undigitalem und zwar mit der so genannten Povodokus-Hundeleine, die einen Griff in Pistolenform hat. MacBook Air sales holding strong, analyst check suggests
Based on checks with Apple's supply chain, sales of the second-generation MacBook Air appear to be holding strong, according to JP Morgan analyst Mark Moskowitz. The product has now been on the market for over five months. In the the calendar Q4 of 2010 Apple is estimated to have shipped about 420,000 Airs, representing a growth of 333 percent year-over-year, and 326.8 percent quarter-over-quarter. The overhauled notebook was only made available on October 20th.

Google makes bid on Nortel patents to shield Android
Google on Monday said it had made a strategic bid on Nortel's patent sale to protect Android. A "stalking horse" bid chosen by Nortel has put a minimum price of $900 million and is meant to discourage patent trolls, as well as anti-Android rivals like Microsoft and Oracle, from making relatively casual bids that let them attack the mobile OS further. Patent law was broken, and either acquiring the patents or forcing the price up was the best way of discouraging lawsuits meant solely to keep a competitor down.

Video mirroring on the original iPad
iPad 2 owners have one cool feature that can't be replicated on the original iPad -- the ability to mirror everything that's on the screen onto another display. Or should I say "had one cool feature," since 18 year-old Belgian student Ian Bauters has figured out a hack that enables video mirroring on a jailbroken original iPad.
As with the video mirroring on the iPad 2, this works with both the Apple VGA Adapter and the Digital AV (HDMI) Adapter. Bauters notes that despite the original iPad having less RAM and a less-capable CPU, he hasn't seen any issues with the mirroring hack he developed.

Nicht supereinfach, aber umsetzbar (einen alten Drucker sollte jeder wahrscheinlich herumfliegen haben). AT&T in a statement confirmed decisions to raise device prices for early upgrades and shortened contracts. Apple approves TrapCall app after 201 days in review
Apple took 201 days to review and approve TrapCall for sale at the App Store, a report says. The app allows users to unmask blocked or private phone callers; developer TelTech claims it has the only app of its kind, and that circumvention of *67 ID blocking is probably why the title was kept in purgatory. Buffalo ships Pogoplug-based CloudStor remote sharing drive
Three months after first mention, Buffalo on Monday shipped the CloudStor. IBM-Forscher und Wissenschaftler vom Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology haben biologisch abbaubare Nanopartikel entwickelt, mit denen Antibiotika an infizierte Zellen "angeklebt" werden können. Diese Partikel könnten neue Wege eröffnen, um mit Medikamenten gegen multiresistente Bakterien wie den methicillinresistenten Staphylococcus aureus vorzugehen. Bei der Arbeit an den Nanopartikeln wurden laut IBM-Forschungsleiter James Hedrick ähnliche Verfahren verwendet wie bei der Chipentwicklung.

Is the AirPort Extreme worth the price?
A friend was looking to replace her wireless router, and I suggested a refurbished AirPort Extreme. New units sell for around US$180, but refurbished models from Apple are $130. Still, that's significantly more expensive than the average Linksys router you'll find at Walmart or Best Buy. Is it worth it?
There's no scientific answer to that question, and reasonable people can disagree, but I will share my experiences and my decisions. FT still holding hope it can avoid iTunes subscription rule
The Financial Times on Monday further established a possible impasse on iTunes subscriptions through a new interview. Managing director Rob Grimshaw said that direct subscriptions were "the core of our business model" and still didn't want to follow Apple's new rule requiring an iTunes royalty cut with reduced subscriber data. He insisted to Reuters that the FT's parent company Pearson had a "great relationship" with Apple, but he was prepared to drop the iPad to go to Android or another platform if negotiations didn't pan out.

AT&T secretly hikes early upgrade prices, non-iPhone prices
AT&T in a very low-profile move has raised early and exception upgrade pricing for iPhones and other smartphones. A notice to store staff has warned that, as of Sunday, users are paying $50 more. Henry Blodget at Business Insider has posted about Comscore's latest smartphone market share survey: "Apple's share increased slightly, but is dead in the water and has now fallen way behind Android. Android now has a third of the US market (33%). RIM's share has plummeted to 29%. Apple is holding at 25%." Nintendo rules out getting into phones to chase Apple, Sony
Nintendo's US president Reggie Fils-Aime in an interview on Friday ruled out the prospect of a phone. The console maker had "no desire" to get into the business and expected it could compete with Apple, Microsoft, and Sony through a dedicated gaming device. Forget-Me-Not is an impressive retro game. It's like Pac-Man, but that's just a way of characterizing the mechanics rather than the actual gameplay. Essentially, you run a little guy around a random Pac-Man style map, but instead of just eating pellets, you're also shooting and trying to collect a key that will eventually lead you out of each level. There are "ghosts" chasing you, but you can shoot them down or "grind" on the walls to build up some power and take them out. Charged up "ghosts" can also explode, which can actually change the shape and layout of the little map.

For those stuck between the flexibility of HDD storage and the archiving ease of BDXLs Panasonic is finally ready to bridge the gap with its new triple layer BD-RE XL discs, set to arrive April 15th in Japan. Being the first rewriteable BDXL is the LM-BE100J's claim to fame, which works out since the 10,000 yen ($118 US) asking price means buying two is probably out of the question. Zwei US-Kongressabgeordnete haben die US-Mobilfunkprovider AT&T, Sprint, Verizon und T-Mobile USA aufgefordert, Details über Standortdaten von ihren Kunden offenzulegen, die die vier Firmen speichern. Der demokratische Abgeordnete Ed Markey sowie sein republikanischer Kollege Joe Barton wollen unter anderem wissen, für welche Zwecke die Informationen genutzt werden und wie lange sie vorgehalten werden. Die amerikanische App Store-Deals Website AppShopper verzeichnete heute die 80.000. native iPad-Applikation im iTunes App Store.Im Juni letzten Jahres waren es "nur" 10.000 native iPad Apps, im August knapp 20.000. Euro firms complain they can't get iPad 2 for board meetings
European businesses have faced an unusual problem in having to delay board meetings due to iPad 2 shortages. Diligent Boardbooks' Simon Small noted to the FT that "almost all" large companies in the continent want to use the Apple tablet for meeting notes, but the chronic shortages have left many of them without supply. The decision to cap sales at two iPads per person, to prevent gray market sales in the face of chronic shortages, is leaving many companies without the option to go paperless.

Vivendi buys Vodafone's remaining stake in SFR
France's Vivendi said on Sunday that it was buying Vodafone's 44 percent share of SFR. The deal, worth 7.95 billion Euros ($11.32 billion), gives it complete control of the carrier. It and Vodafone will keep running SFR as a joint venture for three years, after which Vodafone would have to either talk to another provider or enter on its own.
