More iPhone clock problems reported
Apple continues to deal with problems with the clock on the iPhone -- this first cropped up back in November, when clocks were turned back an hour to standard time. Some issues were still popping up in January, and now this weekend, as clocks were turned forward for Daylight Savings time in the US, some users were still having issues of varying kinds, from clocks changing when they weren't supposed to, to alarms not going off when set up correctly. ASUS Eee Pad Transformer passes through the FCC
Well, it hasn't reached Eee PC levels of confusion just yet, but it looks like ASUS's Eee Pad line is well on its way to filling store shelves with numerous different models. One of those has now hit the FCC under the guise of the Eee Pad TF101, although it's also referred to as the EP101 in some of the documents. HP: TouchPad due in June, 100 million webOS devices sometime
HP chief Leo Apotheker in his major strategy briefing on Monday outlined an aggressive plan for webOS. He expected that the TouchPad and smartphones like the Pre3 and Veer would all be shipping by June and would be part of "wave after wave" of releases. HP eventually hoped to ship 100 million webOS devices, although Apotheker didn't say when this would happen.

ProteMac unveils NetMine v2, adds new interface
ProteMac's network logger and firewall software NetMine has been upgraded to version 2.0, bringing with it a new network engine, new interface, a new notification center and new rules. It allows users to monitor all incoming and outgoing traffic and sets parameters that limit communication (either by software or by hackers or bots) in order to enhance security on a given Mac. The software can also protect against ping floods, port scans, Trojan horses and alert users to maliciously-crafted websites.

If you want some eye catching customization for your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, Pimp Your Screen may be just the utility you want. It's US $0.99 and is basically a large collection of background images and app shelves to give your iDevice a unique look.
Most of the background images are anything but subtle, but that will be the appeal to many. Resolutions are available to match the Retina Display on the iPhone 4, and more standard resolutions for older Apple mobile products. Many of the images are available in portrait or landscape mode for the iPad screen.

Time Warner Cable to roll iPad app with live TV on March 15
Time Warner Cable late Monday said it would be the first known TV provider to have a shipping iPad app with live TV streaming. The app will show 30 standard cable TV channels in HD. It will only work as long as it's on a Wi-Fi router linked to the cable modem but will grow to include channels from more expensive tiers in the future, COO Rob Marcus told the AP.

HP TouchPad coming June, webOS for PC beta by year's end
We may have to wait until summer to purchase a webOS slate, but it won't be summer's end -- PreCentral reports that the company has confirmed a June release date for the HP TouchPad. At the enterprise-oriented HP Summit in San Francisco, CEO Leo Apotheker finally offered the month of release, and also reportedly said that the company's full-force webOS on PC initiative will begin in a humble way -- the beta will run in a web browser, and we'll see it by the end of the year.

Sony Ericsson Spain confirms Xperia Play for €649 on April 1st
Apparently in an effort to reduce confusion and settle the situation once and for all, Sony Ericsson's Spanish outpost has taken to the wires today to clarify the pricing and availability situation of the Xperia Play there: €649 off contract and unlocked (which works out to roughly $907) on April 1st. That more or less lines up with what we've been hearing in other European locales, though in Spain, Vodafone will have a 15-day exclusive on the white model -- other carriers will only have access to black at first, and none of the carriers have come cl

Rumor: Microsoft killing off Zune players for good
Microsoft will mark the end to a sidetrack in its history by phasing out its Zune hardware once and for all, according to a Bloomberg source [not yet online]. Under the strategy, the company would keep selling the existing Zune HD but would phase it out entirely once considered obsolete. The Zune software would be left, as would the Zune Marketplace key to getting content for Windows Phone 7 and the Xbox 360.

March-quarter Mac sales could hit 3.7 million
Apple will probably sell between 3.5 and 3.7 million Macs in the fiscal quarter which ends this month, says Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. The estimate is based on newly-published NPD data, which is said to show Mac sales up 16 percent year-over-year for the months of January and February; if persistent, the figure would give Apple 3.6 million units for the whole quarter. Munster comments that the growth is below a consensus expectation of 22 percent, and towards the bottom of his own predicted range of 15 to 25 percent.

Microsoft reportedly kills off Zune hardware, will focus on software instead
Details are still emerging on this one, but it looks like Microsoft has finally killed off the Zune -- or the hardware side of things, anyway. According to Bloomberg's Dina Bass, an unnamed source has confirmed that Microsoft will no longer produce new Zune media players, and that the company will instead focus solely on the Zune software that already has a foothold on the Xbox 360 and Windows Phone devices (it's not clear if the name will stick around). Tests: Verizon fastest in 4G data, T-Mobile fast in phones
Verizon is by far in front in raw mobile data tests in the US, a new benchmark concluded on Sunday. Its use of real, LTE-based 4G gave it average modem speeds of about 6.44Mbps in PCWorld tests, or more than twice as fast as the 2.83Mbps for a T-Mobile HSPA+ modem. The upload speed edge was wider still and reached a very fast 5Mbps while AT&T had just 1.05Mbps.

iPhone 5 rumored not to have NFC
According to sources within the UK's largest wireless operators, Apple will not include NFC (Near Field Communication) technology in the upcoming iPhone 5. NFC is a short-range wireless technology integrated in mobile phones and used for mobile ticketing and payment processing systems.
The Cupertino company is reportedly reluctant to introduce NFC because the technology lacks a unifying standard. Rather than adopt the current implementation of this technology, Apple is reportedly working on its own NFC system that would tie into iTunes. Weekend iPad 2 sales may hit close to 1 million
The iPad 2's launch weekend sales could peak "closer to 1 million," suggests Wedbush Securities analyst Scott Sutherland. Most analysts have been conservative by comparison, arguing that sales will slot somewhere in excess of 500,000. Reuters notes however that on Friday, Best Buy said that some of its outlets ran out of tablets and accessories in as little as 10 minutes.

HTC Thunderbolt tipped to launch March 17th, again
Well, it looks like the seemingly unending saga of the HTC Thunderbolt launch could really, finally be drawing to a close. Following up a fairly solid hint earlier today, we now have some actual tangible evidence that the 4G-equipped smartphone will indeed be launching on Thursday, March 17th courtesy of a helpful tipster. Of course, that's still not completely official, but HTC has promised that an announcement is coming "soon," so we should be hearing more from both it and Verizon any day (or moment) now if it the 17th really is the launch date.

Kyocera Echo hits Sprint on April 17th for $200
Hey, that's just $100 per screen, right? Sprint has just announced that Kyocera's unusual dual-display Echo clamshell will be launching on April 17th for $199.99 on contract, though you'll be able to notch your interest early -- March 26th, to be exact -- via pre-order. Apple doing early Tues. store openings for iPad 2 restock?
Apple is planning to open at least some of its US retail stores an hour early on Tuesday morning, a report claims. The sole purpose would be to make it possible for more people to get the iPad 2, which is allegedly being restocked in many outlets today. It's Pi Day. Do you know what 3.1415926535897932384626433832795 sounds like?
It may not be marked on most calendars, but if you're a math nerd (or a nerd in general -- of which we count ourselves, obviously), you know what March 14th is. It's 3/14, otherwise known as the first three digits of Pi. That's since become a minor geek holiday of sorts, and has prompted some fairly unique celebrations over the years. One of the latest comes from musician Michael John Blake, who interpreted Pi to the first 31 decimal places as musical notes and turned it into a song -- played at 157 beats per minute, no less (or half of 314). As it turns out, however, Blake wasn't the first to come up with the idea -- composer Lars Erickson wrote his own "Pi Symphony" a few years back, and has now sparked a bit of a copyright spat on YouTube over who actually owns the

iPad 2 benchmarks show impressive gains over original model
One of the first things many iPad 2 upgraders noticed was that the new device seemed very fast in comparison to the original iPad. Over at GigaOM, blogger Geoffrey Goetz ran benchmarks on an iPhone 4, an iPad, and an iPad 2 (all running iOS 4.3) to show how speedy the new iPad really is.
As you can see in the chart above, the iPad 2 consistently outperformed the Apple A4-powered iPad and iPhone 4 in every test. Using the GeekBench tests from Primate Labs, the iPad 2 was about 64% faster than its predecessor

If you're looking for that awesome smart cover functionality but don't want to spend forty bucks on a case for your new iPad, it's really simple to add a low-power magnet that will trigger the smart cover functionality.
All you need is a small strip of flexible craft magnet, available at any local hobby shop, placed at the right position on your iPad. Apple Inc. hopes to take Apple Corps' logo trademark
Apple Inc. on Friday filed to get the trademark for The Beatles' well-known Apple Corps label. While it already won basic rights through a 2007 settlement, the European Trademarks Office filing would get 14 international trademarks for computers and phones as well as clothes, games, social networks and other elements that Apple often uses.

Firefox exec: browsers will escape Adobe's 'plug-in prison'
Web browsers will eventually and need to stop using Flash, Mozilla vice president Jay Sullivan said in an interview Friday. iPhone users suffer bad time switches in DST rollover
A number of iPhones did not properly transition to daylight savings time over the weekend, according to complaints. Like Mac OS or Windows, iOS normally advances an hour automatically during the DST changeover. In some cases however people say that their iPhones flipped an hour behind, or even an hour further ahead than the right time. AT&T, Verizon make calling, texting Japan free
AT&T on Monday said it has made calling and texting to Japan free effective as of Friday, March 11 and until March 31. At the same time, Verizon is waiving fees for calls to Japan until April 10, again since Friday. Pew and the Knight Foundation in a new study has said the web has finally overtaken newspapers as the primary source of news. Internet sources are now only less popular than TV for news, and the gap between the two was "closing," Pew said. 70 percent of iPad 2 buyers are new customers
Did you buy an iPad 2 at launch? Is this your first iPad? If you answered yes to both those questions, then you are similar to most people buying the iPad 2 according to Piper Jaffray analysts. Results from an informal survey of 236 people waiting in line suggests 70% of those customers purchasing the iPad 2 were first-time iPad buyers. This group of consumers bypassed the first generation model and waited for the new and improved version to hit retail shelves.

Apple sets up iTunes-based donations for Japan
In the wake of Friday's 9.0 earthquake in northern Japan and the subsequent tsunami, Apple has set up a donation portal on iTunes. Visitors can donate in $5, $10, $25, $50, $100 or $200 increments. Berkeley Lab scientists create nanocrystal hydrogen storage matrix, could make for H2 batteries
If you could run your celly on hydrogen you'd have power for days and days -- but, you'd also need to lug around a high-pressure tank to store the stuff. That's no fun, and that's why we're still using Li-ion batteries and the like. But, scientists at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory look to have found a way to possibly ditch the tank, creating a gas-barrier polymer matrix out of polymethyl methacrylate, allowing the H2 gas in but keeping oxygen and everything else out. Apple is working on an official magazine template to be included in a future version of Xcode, a rumor claims. Much of Mac and iOS development is government by Apple's Human Interface Guidelines, which attempt to dictate standard appearance and behavior for software. To encourage and simplify their adoption, some templates are by default bundled with Xcode.

iPad 2's Smart Cover torn down, found using 31 magnets
A unique teardown by iFixit of the iPad 2's Smart Cover and its match-up in the iPad has revealed a more elaborate system than many first thought. The two use a total of 31 magnets, 21 in the cover and 10 in the iPad itself, and are in a more layout than some might initially suspect. Only one round magnet in the cover, and a corresponding sensor, turns the display on or off; the rest are used to keep the iPad in place and help keep the cover folded up when used as a stand.

UltraViolet media locker may allow DVD scanning for access
The UltraViolet digital media standard could use a customer's own DVDs as a way of giving them permanent access to a movie, insiders said Monday. Partners in the group are mulling an option for users to scan in their DVDs and get access to any movie that matches up with the UV library. A little while back at GDC, I was introduced to a market for games that I'd never known much about before. There is a whole ecosystem of casual game companies out there that make PC games that appeal to an audience outside of the usual gaming crowd (read: usually older and female). Big Fish Games is one of the biggest of these companies -- they produce a number of games every year (usually hidden item or time management games) and sell them first as free trial downloads and then full PC versions on the website. Recently, these companies have started poking their way into Apple's iOS system, porting over their already large library of titles to Apple's platform, and selling them to this same casual audience on a brand new platform.

Artega SE electric sports car lines up to challenge Tesla Roadster
The Tesla Roadster may not have many competitors that you can actually buy at the moment, but it looks like it can count on a bit of a challenge from German automaker Artega. Analysts: iPad 2 completely sold out, 70% to newcomers
Checks by Deutsche Bank Chris Whitmore and Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster this weekend suggested that Apple had sold out of iPad 2s in record time. Both checked across retailers and found that no stores had stock left by Saturday. First fine for libel via Twitter issued against politician by British court
British politician and former Mayor of Caerphilly, Wales, Colin Elsbury, has been ordered to pay a fine for the charge of libel against an opponent. The lawsuit was filed by Eddie Talbot, an independent challenging Elsbury, after Talbot claimed that Elsbury had Tweeted that Talbot had been forcibly removed from a polling place by police. Well, Elsbury definitely Tweeted that, but, unfortunately for him, the person was not Eddie Talbot. Although Elsbury quickly and publicly corrected himself, Talbot took him to court, and in Cardiff on Friday that Elsbury will have to pay a £3,000 fine plus costs of around £50,000.

Apple tells carriers no NFC for iPhone 5
Apple has reportedly told UK carriers that the its next-generation iPhone will not include Near Field Communication (NFC). Use AppleScript to open current Safari URL in Google Chrome
I've been using John Gruber's suggestions from Going Flash-Free on Mac OS X, and How to Cheat When You Need It to avoid installing Adobe Flash by using Google Chrome (which includes its own version of Flash) whenever I run into a page that has Flash I want to see.
To make this easier, John suggested turning on the "Develop menu" in Safari's "Advanced" preferences, which includes a sub-menu to "Open Page With" and a sub-sub-menu that shows all of your installed browsers. John suggested using System Preferences to create a keyboard shortcut for "Google Chrome" or "Google Chrome.app" depending on which one you saw in the menu.

AT&T makes calling Japan free until the end of March
We imagine that many of you, like us, have been making frantic calls to friends and family in Japan over the last few days without regard to the costs. Now, in the face of otherwise devastating news, we have some good news to share courtesy of AT&T. Ma Bell is offering wired and wireless billing relief for calls made on AT&T between March 11 and March 31st. Under the plan, AT&T wireless postpaid customers will not be charged for international long distrance or text messages to Japan from the US and Puerto Rico. Renowned iOS hacker @Comex has posted photographic proof that he has already jailbroken the just-launched Apple iPad 2. According to @Comexís Twitter feed, previously used iOS exploits were locked down and he had to use a new exploit to get around the new measures. iPad 2 estimated to cost no more than $326, less than Xoom
Analysts have provided somewhat conflicting cost breakdowns for the iPad 2 that nonetheless both put the Motorola Xoom in a poor light. iSuppli said Apple's tablet should cost $323.35 in raw parts for a 32GB, Verizon (EVDO) version or $326.60 for its AT&T (HSPA) equivalent. The HSPA version needs chipsets with Bluetooth, GPS and Wi-Fi separate from the Intel/Infineon cellular chip where the EVDO version uses an all-in-one Qualcomm chipset, much like in the Verizon iPhone.

AT&T to cap DSL, U-verse on May 2
AT&T after a leak on Sunday confirmed that it will join other Internet providers in capping its service. Beginning on May 2, regular DSL subscribers will have up to 150GB per month, while those on its U-verse VDSL connections will have the same 250GB as a Comcast user. BBR was told overage fees of $10 for each extra 50GB of data will be in effect, but will only kick in for those who run over the cap three times, albeit over the duration of the account and not per year.

iPad 2 jailbroken, no ETA on release
You knew this was coming -- it was only a matter of time -- and here it is, Apple's latest creation sans the iOS chains. The development community credits @comex with installing Cydia on this white iPad 2, and he's apparently already hard at work on a public jailbreak. According to his Twitter feed, the hack required a brand new exploit, as previous bugs were squashed in iOS 4.3. We'll keep you posted on when the hack's ready for you to use, too.
