Report: Windows Phone to beat iPhone in market share by next year
IDC has released its latest report on the future of the smartphone market, and according to the predictions, there's a lot of growth in store for Windows Phone 7. By 2015, says the firm, Windows Phones should have over 20% of the smartphone market, placing it ahead of even Apple's iOS handsets (Apple's market share, according to the report, is going to fall, but not by much).
That's not impossible, given that Android has already moved ahead of Apple, and given the growing smartphone market itself, we'll probably see a lot more Windows Phones out and about in the next year or so. But that amount of growth seem

Videotron parent company tries to push iPhones off its TV network in Quebec
What happens when a giant media company owns both a wireless carrier and a television network? Shenanigans -- or at least that's what now seems to be going on in la belle province of Quebec, where the parent company of cable and wireless provider Videotron and television network TVA has seemingly decided to throw its weight around a bit. Apparently, some folks from Quebecor Inc. recently realized that a number of television shows produced for TVA featured iPhones somewhat prominently, which just so happens to be a phone that isn't offered by its Videotron subsidiary. Coulomb's ChargePoint app now provides EV charging station status
There's unfortunately still no Android version, but Coulomb has now rolled out a fairly significant update to its ChargePoint app for iOS and BlackBerry. In addition to helping you locate EV charging stations in the United States, Europe and Australia, the app will now also provide realtime charging status information, including things like the total cost to charge and the current charging station configuration. iOS 5 mit bedeutender Sprach-Integration?
Nachdem bereits in den letzten Tagen einige Gerüchte über das kommende iOS 5 auftauchten, spekuliert man heute über Sprachsteuerung im kompletten Betriebsystem. Nintendo says 3DS sets day-one handheld sales record, doesn't quantify it
How many Nintendo 3DS handhelds got sold stateside after Triforce Johnson got one? Enough for Nintendo to boast. "U.S. day-one sales numbers for Nintendo 3DS were the highest of any Nintendo hand-held system in our history," the company claimed today, adding that the volume of tech support calls it received was also "well below the rate experienced during past hardware launches," and that there are no widespread issues with the handheld. Survey claims 30 percent of Chinese 3G buyers want iPhone
Apple could be poised to do extremely well in the Chinese phone industry, according to an AlphaWise/Morgan Stanley survey. 2,029 Chinese cellphone users were polled in February and March; of these, about 88 percent said their next phone would be a smartphone. Within the group planning to get a 3G phone, 30 percent said they were expecting to buy an iPhone.

Gamer turns iPad into virtual A-10 cockpit gear [video]
A gamer in the past few weeks has started up a project to turn the iPad into a unique peripheral for the combat flight sim DCS A-10C. The homebrew iControl DCS app uses the iPad to replace multiple instruments that would otherwise require moving the in-game camera away from the outside world. Shacknews member Boarder2's implementation uses Wi-Fi but transmits enough data to show live information from the Multi Function Control Displays (MFCDs) while still providing real-time control of buttons. Panasonic, Xpand team up on M-3DI standard for active shutter glasses at home and in theaters
Last year's problem was a complete lack of standards on active shutter 3D glasses but now we might have too many, as Panasonic and Xpand have joined forces with several other companies to push M-3DI as a single spec for TVs, computers and theaters. Japan: Knappheit an iPod-Batterien
Die Katastrophen in Japan haben sehr viele Privatleute und Firmen stark betroffen, darunter auch Kureha. Kureha ist ein Anbieter für Lithium-Ionen-Batterien, wie sie in den aktuellen iPods genutzt werden. Die Produktion dieser wurde verringert, weil die Produktionsanlage in Japan komplett abgeschaltet wurde.Seit Steve Jobs zu Apple zurück kam und Timothy Cook mit sich brachte, wurden Produktionszeiten stark reduziert, es wurde nach Bedarf produziert. iPhone 4 Personal Hotspot put to the test
It's a good thing that I decided to sign up for AT&T's implementation of the iOS 4.3 Personal Hotspot feature while I was standing in line for my iPad 2 a couple of weeks ago.
I'm accompanying my wife on a conference trip this week, using the time away from my consulting clients to get some serious writing done on a book update. As with many hotels that host conferences and conventions, this place charges for Wi-Fi in the room.
That's not a problem during the fairly quiet morning hours when the bar area is empty, but once lunch rolls around and the afternoon partying starts, it's impossible to get any work done. To avoid paying the ridiculous $10.95 daily charge for in-room Wi-Fi, I decided to put Personal Hotspot to the test.

Analyst: Apple could take 'more conservative' outlook on Q3
Apple could be "more conservative than usual" when guiding investors on its fiscal third quarter, which ends in June, says Pacific Crest analyst Andy Hargreaves. "We believe supply disruptions in Japan have left the channel with as little as two months of inventory of key components for iPad and iPhone," he writes in an investment memo. "If supply is not brought back online quickly and Apple is unable to find alternatives, then iPad and iPhone production could be meaningfully impaired in the second half of fiscal Q3."

New York Attorney General to review AT&T, T-Mobile deal
New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said on Tuesday that his office would investigate AT&T's buyout of T-Mobile. He promised a "thorough review" and stressed that it was important to have low-cost service that might be at risk after AT&T bought out the usually more affordable smaller carrier. New York also had its state-specific issues, as Albany, Buffalo, Rochester, and Syracuse were limited in their competitive choices, a fact AT&T largely sidestepped in its merger presentation.

MobileMe rumored to get alternative payment methods
A recently-published report from Germany suggests Apple will soon add brand new functionality to MobileMe: the ability to subscribe to the suite of online services with a form of payment other than a credit card. The rumor discourages hope for MobileMe becoming a free offering.

BlackBerry PlayBook FAQ confirms native email, calendar and contacts apps, just not at launch
The native app situation on the BlackBerry PlayBook has been one point of contention since the device was first announced, and there's still a fair bit of confusion even now, less than a month from launch. We now have a fairly definitive answer for one key question, however, although it may not be the one you were hoping for. According to an official FAQ provided for a Verizon webinar, the PlayBook will indeed be getting native email, calendar and contacts apps in a "future software update," but you'll have to make do with them initially. Videotron parent forcing TV shows to pull shots of iPhones
Videotron's parent company Quebecor has been pushing movie and TV show producers to omit any shots with iPhones, talks with local producers have uncovered. Android 3.0 catalog still stalled below 100 apps

TechCrunch is reporting the rumor today, and some sources I have close to the Siri product think it is likely happening.
Siri is that very cool personal assistant app. It allows you to ask questions which the app sends (as your voice data) to a server where it is recognized. The query is then sent off to a series of search engines to find answer, which is finally returned to the user. iMovie for iPad continues to suffer from location issue
The iPad version of iMovie is continuing to suffer from a problem in which video file access is dependent on location services, a report notes. Camera + 2.1 adds Clarity feature, UI improvements, more
Tap Tap Tap has released Camera + 2.1 (US$0.99) today, which includes some nice UI changes, automatic saving to the iPhone's camera roll (yay!) and a hot new feature called Clarity, which is Tap Tap's answer to Apple's HDR photo feature. Future Navy lasers will 'burn incoming missiles,' blast through ominous vessels
The United States Navy has been working on next-gen weaponry ever since the last-gen was present-gen, and if the next next-gen ever actually arrives, well we don't stand a chance at lasting very long. 2012 iPad sales could hit 40 million, says analyst
Needham & Co. analyst Charlie Wolf has made major revisions to his iPad and earnings-per-share estimates, citing a "blowout launch" of the iPad 2 on March 11th. The event is said to have "produced the longest lines yet," handily beating out earlier iPad and iPhone launches. Wolf notes that the situation was repeated on March 25th, when the iPad 2 was launched in many more countries including Australia, Canada and the UK.

Building permits suggest SoHo Apple Store ready for expansion
Apple's New York SoHo store has a long and storied history. It was the first Apple Store to open in New York City and is housed in an old, distinctively-styled Post Office building.
It has been visited by Steve Jobs himself and has been the host of several high-profile guest appearances by the Coen Brothers and the Jonas Brothers. These appearances attracted so much attention that the store was cited as a bad neighbor by its community.
Though its reputation is large, the square footage of the SoHo store reaches a mere 16,000 square-feet, making it the smallest Apple store in the Big Apple.

Angry Birds kommen als Plüschtiere, mehr oder weniger liebevoll genäht

Die Plüsch-Birds oben im Bild wurden liebevoll von Heidi Kenney von My Paper Crane gestaltet und zwar für ihre Kinder und soweit für niemanden sonst - was wahrscheinlich auch besser so ist, denn Rovio findet solche Konkurrenz bzw. Charachter-Piraterie bestimmt nicht witzig und das Unternehmen wirft seine Angray Birds gerade selbst auf den Markt: Nicht ganz so liebevoll gestaltet, dafür in diversen Größen und Sound-Effekten. O2 UK makes tethering free on existing plans
O2 UK took a cue from Canadian carriers on Tuesday and dropped the premium tethering fee on its monthly plans. Any of its regular Bolt On plans, including the basic £3 ($4.80) 100MB plan, offer tethering for free. It had previously asked for £7.65 ($12.23) regardless of the tier and often more than doubled the price of data.

Vimeo expanded its video hosting service to include an iPhone application today. The new mobile application is integrated tightly into the Vimeo service and lets you easily edit and manage your existing video content as well as add new content recorded on your iOS device.
The Vimeo application is feature rich and lets you upload new content and download existing clips to your camera roll. Braun soll als Uhrenmarke an alte Design-Größe erinnern

Nach dem unerfreulichen Ende der Braun-Audiosparte sind die Markenrechte für verschiedene Bereiche auf zielloser Wanderschaft, ein Teil ist jetzt bei einem Investor gelandet, der den vertrauten Schriftzug demnächst auf Armbanduhren platzieren möchte, um Design-Fans anzulocken. Auf den ersten Blick sehen die beiden ersten Braun-Armbanduhr-Modelle auch recht flott aus, was nicht zuletzt am prominent platzierten Scroll-Rad liegt. Ob die Uhren dem Namen Braun würdig sind, werden wir aber erst erfahren, wenn die Teile für kolportierte 420 Euro auf den Markt kommen.

Apple Design Awards: Would past winners be eligible?
As we reported Monday, Mac software is once again eligible for an Apple Design Award with the caveat that it be available on the Mac App Store by May 23. Not only does it exclude companies that can't enter the Mac App Store, but it also cuts out a good bit of past winners.
Out of the past 22 winners of the Apple Design Award spanning 2006 to 2009, nine apps would be eligible for the 2011 awards. Thirteen are out of the game, though two developers have indicated future Mac App Store plans. A couple pieces of past winners are no longer actively developed.

IDC predicted on Tuesday both that Android would keep its lead until 2015 but that Windows Phone would overtake the iPhone for second place. Android would take 39.5 percent this year but gain only slightly to hit 45.4 percent four years later. Nokia files second complaint against Apple
After yesterday's decision by the International Trade Commission that Apple isn't violating five key Nokia patents, Nokia today has hit back by claiming that they invented, well, just about everything Apple has ever made.
AppleInsider is reporting that Nokia has today launched a second complaint with the ITC saying that Apple's iPhone, iPod, iPad and Mac computers violate seven of their patents covering multi-tasking, data synchronization, positioning, call quality, and the use of Bluetooth accessories.

Apple setting sights on first Israeli Apple Store?
Apple is looking at building its first Israeli retail store in Jerusalem, claims the Jerusalem Post. The company is said to be negotiating with real estate firm Bet Yair for a facility measuring some 5,000 square meters, a colossal 53,820 square feet. Verizon ships Samsung 4G hotspot, Novatel 4G modem
Verizon today began shipping some of the 4G data-only devices it showed at CES. The Samsung 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot is its first shipping LTE router and shares its speeds over an 802.11n Wi-Fi connection with as many as five devices, reverting to EVDO 3G if not in one of Verizon's faster areas. O2 scraps mobile tethering surcharges, cheers up a whole United Kingdom
This is weird. UK carrier O2 has decided to do exactly what we've been asking mobile operators to do for donkeys' years -- it's going to allow users to chew through their data allowance in whatever fashion they like, without imposing artificial surcharges for tethering secondary devices to your phone. Up till now, you'd have had to swallow a salty £7.65 ($12.24) charge each month to get your tether on with O2, but for whatever reason, that has now been scrapped for subscribers on pay-monthly deals. TUAW's Daily App: Ring Blade
Ring Blade is an interesting take on the top-down shooter genre (sometimes called "bullet hell," though that specific genre is a little tougher than Ring Blade actually is). Games of this ilk on the iPhone have struggled a little bit with control schemes, and Ring Blade tries something original -- rather than dragging your ship around the screen or blocking the action with a finger, you can flick your ship back and forth on the bottom of your iPhone's screen. You charge shots with a touch, and then you can flick shots up off the "walls" on-screen; they'll bounce back and forth and hit enemies as they go.

Nokia files new ITC complaint vs. Apple after being thwarted
Nokia refused to accept its loss to Apple at the ITC last week and said on Tuesday that it had already filed a second complaint against Apple. The new motion alleges that virtually every device Apple makes, including iPads, iPhones, iPods, and Macs, is using technology from one of seven Nokia patents. Ein bisschen kurios ist es schon, wenn ein Automobilhersteller sich damit brüstet, wie weit seine Vehikel schon gefahren sind: Dass Autos es tatsächlich von A nach B schaffen und das massenhaft, dürfte eigentlich allen klar sein im Jahr 2011. Um fair zu bleiben, soll erwähnt sein, dass sich Tesla nicht nur damit brüstet, dass die 1.500 ausgelieferten Roadster zusammen schon mehr als 10 Millionen Meilen runtergerissen haben, sondern dabei auch 500.000 Gallonen aka 1.892.705 Liter Benzin oder 2.650 Tonnen CO2 "gespart" haben. Weil der Strom kommt ja sauber und praktisch aus der Steckdose.

Amazon intros Cloud Drive and Cloud Player for web, Android
Amazon in the night unveiled its rumored media locker and beat Apple and Google in the process. Cloud Drive gives users a way to store a minimum of 5GB of files on the web and access them from any Mac or PC. For the last six years, global research firm TNS has been compiling extensive reports on the usage habits of mobile phone users. Today the company announced the release of its latest work, TNS Mobile Life 2011. Nokia reicht weitere Klage gegen Apple ein
Nach Apples Teilerfolg in den patentrechtlichen Auseinandersetzungen mit Nokia gibt es keine Anzeichen, dass die Streitfrage vor einer Einigung steht. Intel hat schon wieder eine neue SSD-Serie an Großhandelsstart gebracht: Statt X25-M heißt es jetzt schlicht 320 und natürlich wird mal wieder alles schneller, billiger und größer: Die Solid State Drives basieren auf 25 nm NAND Flash Speicher, sie sind in Größen von 40, 80, 120, 160, 300 und 600 GB zu haben und kommen mit 220 MB/s sequenzieller Schreib- und 270 MB/s Lesegeschwindigkeit. Wenn ihr 1.000 Stück nehmt kosten die Teile zwischen 89 Dollar (40 GB) und 1.069 Dollar (600 GB), was dann "bis zu 100 US-Dollar günstiger" sein soll als die jeweiligen X25-M-Modelle.

Here in the UK, O2 was Apple's partner operator for several years, and it remains the default choice for a lot of us iPhone users. Enisa fordert einheitliche Sicherheitsstandards
Die EU-Agentur für Internetsicherheit Enisa hat sich für einheitliche Netzwerksicherheitsstandards in Europa ausgesprochen. AMD Radeon HD 6790: Günstiger Stromfresser?

Die ETH in Zürich betreibt eine Halle mit dem verdammt lässigen Namen Flying Machine Arena, in der es genauso streng wissenschaftlich wie unbedingt spektakulär zugeht, zum Beispiel wenn Professor Raffaello D'Andrea die Quadrocopter von der Leine lässt: Den Fluggeräte wurde hier schon beigebracht, Piano zu spielen, zu jonglieren oder Lufttänzchen aufzuführen. Alles ziemlich beeindruckend, aber nichts im Vergleich zu den beiden Quadrocoptern beim autonomen Luftballspiel, die es im Video nach dem Break zu bewundern gibt.

Amazon hat die Wolke am Start: in den USA ist Amazons Cloud Player jetzt online gegangen. In den USA können Amazon-Kunden nun ihre MP3s (egal wo sie gekauft wurden, allerdings dürfen sie kein DRM haben) auf ihren 5 GB großen Wolkenspeicher (der sich auf 20 GB erweitern lässt) hochladen um sie dann mit dem Rechner oder dem Android Device streamen zu können. Der Service ist kostenlos und es scheint so, als ob er auch mit UK-Accounts funktioniert, mit deutschen allerdings definitiv nicht. Mal sehen, wann Google mit seinem Cloud Player um die Ecke kommt.

HTC EVO 3D kommt nach Europa (Video)

HTCs französischer Zweig hat per Tweet bekanntgegeben, dass das EVO 3D auch nach Europa kommen wird, zumindest nach Frankreich, allerhöchstwahrscheinlich dürfte es aber auch in Resteuropa erscheinen. Wann das genau geschieht ist unklar (in den USA wird es irgendwann im Sommer kommen), aber wir sind dann doch ein wenig gespannt auf das 4,3-Zoll Dual Core Handy mit 1,2 GHz, 1080p Video-Aufnahme in 2D und 720p in 3D und HTCs neuster Sense UI-Variante nebst dem letzten Gingerbread-Build. MobileMe to get 'alternate payment methods' soon?
A German Mac news website claims that Apple has plans to implement alternative payment methods for their suite of internet services, known as MobileMe, in the near future. Amazon Cloud Player goes live, streams music on your computer and Android
Oh snap! Look who just ate Apple's and Google's lunch here? Amazon has just pushed out its very own music streaming service, which is conveniently dubbed the Amazon Cloud Player. Existing customers can now upload their MP3 purchases to their 5GB cloud space -- upgradable to a one-year 20GB plan for free upon purchasing an MP3 album -- and then start streaming using the player on your computer or on your Android. Beatles copyright infringement suit settles for $950K
Media Rights Technologies has reportedly agreed to pay $950,000 to settle a copyright infringement suit involving Beatles songs sold on the Internet before the music became officially available on iTunes. Netflix slims down bandwidth for capped Canadian users
Netflix in its first signs of addressing a rapidly constricting audience told Canadian users it was slimming down the bandwidth demands of its video service. By default, streaming in the country will now use a lower 300MB per hour bitrate that consumes two thirds less data but with "minimal impact" on the perceived image quality. The choice would let a viewer watch about 30 hours of Netflix on 9GB of data and still leave room, even under a restrictive cap from Bell, Rogers, or another similar provider.

Some early-bird Verizon iPad 2 customers still waiting for shipments
Several Verizon customers who tried to order an iPad 2 directly through the telco giant are still awaiting their shipments. Considering the worldwide shortage of iPad 2 units that might not sound like a big deal at first, until you hear the second half: many of these customers ordered the iPad 2 on its first day of availability and still haven't received one. Rumor: Future Jerusalem Apple Store to house the world's first "Apple Digital Library"
Okay, make of this what you will, but the Jerusalem Post is reporting that Apple is set to open up "a giant Apple store and education center" in the city within the next three years. Apple is working with Bet Yair real estate to open up a 50,000-square-foot Apple Store at the entrance to Jerusalem, the Post says.
The report goes on to claim that Apple directors in Israel recently toured the prospective site and that they want to bring the 50,000-square-foot store to Jerusalem for "symbolic reasons." Most interestingly of all, the Jerusalem Apple Store will reportedly hold the world's first Apple Digital Library, which would be open to the public.

Paragon Software group has teamed up with Encyclopaedia Brittanica Inc. to produce an iOS version of the Brittanica Concise Encyclopedia 2011 for iOS ($20) as an on-the-go information resource that can be accessed even without an internet connection. Still more iPhone alarm clock issues in the UK
You'd think that after the clock returned to Daylight Savings time a little while back, iOS clocks would be back to normal, but no. Macworld is reporting that iPhone users in the UK are having even more issues with their device clocks, with some alarms not going off, and some going off at the wrong time. At this point, the issue seems to simply be old versions of iOS out there -- Apple has of course been dealing with this one for a while, so the latest update to version 4.3.1 should fix the issues.

Analysts: Apple may have sold between 5-9 million iPad 2s in two weeks
The week after the iPad 2 went on sale, I kept expecting Apple to issue a press release announcing that they had sold a million iPad 2s within X number of days (Apple sold about two million of the first version in the first 60 days). However, the first week passed and now, more than two weeks later, Apple has yet to announce any iPad 2 sales. This leads me to believe that Apple won't be announcing any iPad 2 numbers until their next financial conference call later in April.
Of course, lack of hard numbers from Apple doesn't keep analysts from guesstimating just how many iPad 2s were sold in the last two weeks of Apple's fiscal Q2. Philip Elmer-DeWit

Amex wants to Serve up money from your iPhone
The ability to leave your wallet at home and pay -- or get paid -- for everything with your iPhone is a hot ticket for financial service providers, and today it got even hotter.
Amex announced a new payment service called Serve that is available immediately, and while you'll still need a card for paying for items at locations that take American Express cards, that card is completely tied to your Serve account. The Serve card can be reloaded either from the Serve website or from an iPhone or Android-based phone app, then used at any Amex location.

Apple reportedly yet to order iPhone 5 parts
If you're excited to buy the iPhone 5 this summer, you might want to relax a bit. Reports from China are saying that Apple hasn't even started securing the parts for a brand new version of the iPhone, which would mean that there's almost no way a new version could be released this year. Especially with all of the changes described in the recent rumors, Apple would need to start early to get all of the manufacturers working on making enough of a new iPhone to go around, and according to this source in China, those manufacturers haven't heard word one.

Looks like "Team 250" is primed to add a few new members now that the EPA has revealed its official MPGe ratings for Smart's Fortwo EDs. Analysts: Apple sold at least 5M iPad 2s in Q2
Despite having only been available for two weeks in the US (and only two days in 25 countries outside the US) before the end of Apple's second fiscal quarter of 2011 (which ended Saturday), Fortune magazine's Philip Elmer-Dewitt rounded up analyst estimates of iPad 2 sales and came up with a minimum estimate of five million units sold, with a mean estimate of 6.02 million and an consensus guess of 6.26 million.

Tesla Roadsters cover 10M miles, American Chiropractic Association members laugh maniacally
If you've been following the development of Tesla's first production car, the Roadster, you probably already know that it can do up to 240ish miles on a charge -- or an awful lot more in perfectly ideal conditions.
