HTC Flyer up for preorder for $499 at Best Buy on April 24th
Europeans have been able to preorder the HTC Flyer for months, and now curious Yanks are about to get their chance, too. Kindergarten iPad 2 program causes rift between parents and school officials in Maine
Recently, the school board in Auburn, Maine decided to launch a pilot program which would place an iPad 2 in the hands of the district's 300 kindergarten students. While school officials hail this program as "a revolution in education," some parents are questioning this decision.

Norio Ohga, former Sony chairman and multimedia pioneer, dies at 81
There's more sad news out of Japan this morning, we're afraid -- Sony is reporting that former chairman Norio Ohga passed away in Tokyo yesterday from multiple organ failure. He was 81. You may not personally remember a Sony under his reign -- Ohga helmed the company from 1982 to 1995 -- but Norio Ohga was arguably the man responsible for turning Sony from a high-profile analog electronics manufacturer into a digital multimedia conglomerate. As we noted last week, the Square credit card reader is now available in Apple Stores all around the country -- you buy the reader for $9.95, but get a $10 credit when you do so, so the only charges are what you rack up when actually accepting credit card payments. As we've said before, it's a pretty easy way to use cards, whether you just need money from a friend or have a small business that only occasionally takes payments.

Mac OS X's Preview app has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a PDF viewer. AppleInsider reports that in the latest build of Lion, Preview has received a UI overhaul and added some pretty cool new features. Exklusiv: Weißes iPhone 4 landet bei Vodafone UK

Das weiße iPhone 4 wurde im System von Vodafone UK gesichtet und ist dort offensichtlich auch schon auf Lager. Die Bilder des Phones wurden Engadget-US von einem Kunden zugespielt, der bereits eines der weißen Modelle erhalten haben will. Ein Angestellter markierte diese nämlich fälschlicherweise als schwarze iPhones. Vodafone habe die Auslieferung aber schon bald danach gestoppt, angeblich "bis nächste Woche". Quellen aus Holland melden zudem, dass dort ab am 27. April sowohl die 16 GB- wie auch die 32 GB-Version erhältlich sein werde, allerdings zu Beginn nur in begrenzter Stückzahl.

SARbot searches for victims underwater in Japan (video)
Joining the extended family of robots assisting with the relief effort in Japan, the Texas-based Center for Robot-Assisted Search and Rescue (CRASAR) has sent its SARbot to Rikuzentakata. Like some of the other bots, this guy can shoot video as it swims under houses and other crippled structures, but it also sports a "limb grasping mechanism," designed to retrieve drowning victims and assist in other search and rescue operations. Conde Nast decision exemplifies why publishers need to rethink iPad magazines
Today representatives from Conde Nast told AdAge that they are slowing the addition of any new Conde Nast magazines to the iPad. Why? According to AdAge, Conde Nast feels "conditions aren't quite right yet to deliver the ideal app editions at the kind of scale that advertisers want." In other words, sales aren't stellar.
Sales won't get stellar until magazine publishers wake up and reduce the per-issue prices of their magazines by 60-80%. Website Survey: 'Mac vs PC' stereotypes broadly true
An unscientific survey conducted by the survey and recommendation website Hunch.com has reinforced some data already broadly known about Mac people versus Windows people -- and also shown up some surprising differences and similarities. The website used answers from over 300,000 respondents on this latest survey, and also compared the answers to a similar match-up it did in November 2009. Droid X 2 spotted in first press shots

Google argues Android location data is opt-in only
Google in a statement on Friday refuted assertions that Android devices were archiving identifiable location data without users' explicit knowledge just like iOS hardware. It contended that users always had to give permission to send map positioning out to Google and were notified when a location request came. Data was also masked on its way out, Google told TechCrunch, preventing a link between a person or an individual phone and the location.

AT&T filing shows that smartphone data is facing huge growth
AT&T has submitted a document to the FCC in the process of trying to get that T-Mobile merger approved, and it reveals that AT&T was overwhelmed by the amount of smartphone data traffic it had to push through with the arrival of the iPhone. 2010 saw an 8000% jump in data rates over 2007, according to the document, which adds that "a smartphone generates 24 times the mobile data traffic of a conventional wireless phone, and the explosively popular iPad and similar tablet devices can generate traffic comparable to or even greater than a smartphone."
