Apple re-working iPad 2 inventory shipments strategy
Apple is apparently trying to slow down the iPad 2 madness -- a new report from AppleInsider claims that the company has instituted a new policy with iPad 2 shipments, requiring stores to keep received iPad 2 units in store for up to a day before actually releasing them for sale. That actually makes plenty of sense -- just pushing them out for sale as they arrive could really mess up inventory, and this policy gives the store managers enough time to make sure shipments are received and logged-in before they start going out the door to customers.

HTC Shooter appears for Sprint with Android 2.3.2, qHD screen and dual-core CPU?
We still haven't heard what happened to the HTC Glacier, but the GLBenchmark database brings word of another mysterious high-end phone from Taiwan -- the HTC Shooter, which is very likely equipped with a dual-core Qualcomm processor. Sprint Project Leapfrog rumored for switch to LTE
Sprint is quietly going ahead with a plan that would bring LTE to its network, a rumor started by a GLG contributor on Wednesday. Reportedly called Project Leapfrog, it would see Alcatel-Lucent, Ericsson, and Samsung add in LTE for 4G on its network and use the exit from IDEN to clear up 800MHz spectrum for the new network's use. It would reportedly take three years but would both put it on par with rivals like AT&T and Verizon while lowering its costs.

Web apps found to be lacking Safari's speed bump in iOS 4.3
Well, it looks like you weren't imagining things if you thought in-app browsers or web apps saved to your iPhone's home screen seemed slower than Safari itself. Ars Technica has now confirmed that pages or web apps loaded using those methods aren't receiving the JavaScript boost added to Safari in iOS 4.3, which the site found to be about 2.5 times faster than Safari in iOS 4.2. The problem is that those apps don't have the necessary permissions to execute dynamically generated native code stored in writeable memory (as Safari does), which basically leaves them running at the same speed they did in iOS 4.2. Analysis of iPad 2 display shows performance similar to iPhone 4
The iPhone 4's Retina Display rightly gets praise for its high pixel density. Since its release, many iPad owners have longed for Apple to bump up the display resolution from 1024 x 768 in order to provide a similar viewing experience on Apple's tablet. When viewing an iPad's display next to an iPhone 4's Retina Display, the iPad appears excessively pixellated, particularly in text-heavy apps like iBooks.
Pixel density aside, recent analysis by Dr. Raymond M. Soneira of DisplayMate Technologies shows that the iPad 2's display stacks up well against the iPhone 4 in most other measures. TWCable TV iPad app struggling with high demand, angry cable channels
Time Warner's TWCable TV iPad app could only serve 15 of the originally announced 32 channels (which curiously did not include BBC America, despite its appearance in these screens from iTunes) due to higher than anticipated demand that crashed the servers last night (Broadcasting & Cable reports the channels have since been restored.) Rumored iPhone 5 cases show conservative design
One of the first of likely many iPhone 5 case leaks emerged on Wednesday with possible signs of a superficially conservative update. Apple's fate not tied to Foxconn, analyst contends
A creeping slowdown at Foxconn is not likely to drag Apple down with it, argues Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner. Challenging a view taken by JMP Securities Alex Gauna, Reiner notes that while Apple and Foxconn once managed to grow together, the pattern may have been coincidental rather than connected as the former's contribution to Foxconn is "limited." Sprint 'Project Leapfrog' rumors claim LTE network upgrade is underway
If we had a dime for every time Sprint CEO Dan Hesse (or spectrum partner Clearwire) has talked about a possible migration to LTE, we'd have well, at least several dimes. A new rumor that's popped up from a couple sources today -- consulting firm Gerson Lehrman Group and GizmoFusion -- claims that the LTE move is now a done deal, with Sprint signing contracts with infrastructure supplies Ericsson, Alcatel-Lucent, and Samsung to roll out service over the course of the next two to three years as it decommissions iDEN on its 800MHz spectrum. IE9 downloads hit 2.3m in first day, still trail Safari 4
Microsoft touted a minor resurgence following the launch of Internet Explorer 9. Team member Ryan Gavin said the browser reached 2.35 million downloads in the first 24 hours of the completed version being online. The number was twice as quick as for the original beta and four times those of the release candidate.

iTunes 10.2 code shows icon for white CDMA iPhone 4
Code in iTunes 10.2 contains a reference to a white CDMA iPhone 4, a report says. Buried in a resource file is said to be an icon for the phone, which is distinguished from the regular GSM iPhone by an antenna band with different gaps in it. O2 Germany says HP Veer is coming in May
The tweet above just about says it all for this one -- well, in German, anyway. According to O2 Germany, the HP Veer will be launching on the carrier sometime in May, which presumably means it will also be available elsewhere in Europe around the same time, and likely in the US as well -- we've previously only heard "this spring" for a launch date. Unfortunately, there's still no word on any US carriers for the Pixi successor, though surely someone will be able to pick it up. It is rather light, after all.

Samsung adds 11-inch Series 9 in bid to take on MacBook Air
Samsung as part of its massive US electronics unveil on Wednesday both confirmed the 13-inch Series 9 and added a long-rumored 11.1-inch model in a conspicuous rivalry with Apple. The smaller version will match many of the 11-inch MacBook Air's specifications one-for-one and will come in with a 2.3-pound weight, 2GB of RAM, and a 64GB SSD. The Korea-made notebook will take advantage of the later ship date to come with a newer ultra-low voltage 1.33GHz Core i3 and extend the battery life to seven hours.

Report: Apple king of the tablet market until 2013
One of the stories making the blog rounds today is a new report from research firm DisplaySearch, which claims that Apple will stave off emerging iPad competitors. The iPad will be king of the tablets until 2013 when they'll be overtaken by competitors.
A lot depends on not just how well competitors will do, but the access to supplies. As we reported last month, Apple is making sure the majority of touch screens currently being produced are being earmarked for the iPad.

Samsung brings TA750, TA950 3D TV/PC display hybrids to US
Samsung's string of US news on Wednesday brought its new line of 3D TV/PC display hybrids to the country for the first time. Both output a 1080p, 120Hz stereoscopic 3D picture on their 23- or 27-inch screens. They have conventional PC inputs like DVI, but they also have two HDMI inputs and an ATSC tuner to take in video from a game console or Blu-ray player as well as to catch over-the-air HD.

The iPad 2 has become the subject of jokes in two new videos. On Tuesday night's CBS Late Show, host David Letterman did a Top 10 list on reasons to buy the Apple tablet, which was launched just last Friday. Time Warner live iPad TV overwhelemed, temporarily cut back
Time Warner Cable gave the first clues that that live iPad TV streaming was in hot demand on Wednesday with word that its TWCable TV app had been overcome by demand. The app was popular enough late Tuesday that customers couldn't use the authentication system. The cable giant hoped to offset the load by temporarily cutting back the number of channels from 30 to 15 until it was ready to handle the load.

Photoshop Express for iOS enhances camera features
Adobe updated its Photoshop Express application for iOS to version 2.0. Photoshop Express is a basic photo editing and sharing application for Apple's suite of iOS 4.2-compatible devices. The updated application now includes support for the retina display of the iPhone 4 and the iPod touch as well as the multi-tasking features of the latest version of iOS.
For budding photographers, Photoshop Express 2.0 includes a new "Camera Pack" feature. Available as a $3.99 in-app purchase, the camera workflow add-in lets you take pictures from within the application and preview these photos before you press the shutter button. Sun.com, the twelfth oldest domain on the internet, will be decommissioned on June 1st
Sun Microsystems, one of the original gangsters responsible for supplying all the electronics and infrastructure we now know as the internet, ceased to be Sun Microsystems in January of last year. Assimilated into the Oracle juggernaut, its operations no longer carry that familiar logo and soon they'll no longer even be referenced in the same spot on the internet. Yes, after 25 years of answering the call of sun.com, the company that no longer is will be letting go of its former domain name as well. The site has already been redirecting users to Oracle for quite a while, but come June 1st, it'll be like the Sun we knew had never even risen.

David Letterman's top 10 reasons to buy an iPad 2
The iPad 2 has been getting a lot of attention since it arrived in U.S. stores on March 11. The lines at Apple Stores around the country were top news on many local TV stations, and the sleek new device has been popping up on shows in the five days since the introduction.
Last night, Late Show host David Letterman used the iPad 2 as fodder for his nightly "Top 10 List." While some of the "Top 10 Reasons to Buy an iPad 2" fall flat, there are several that are actually pretty humorous, including #7 which describes the three cameras that come with every iPad 2.

Apple Stores holding onto iPad 2 shipments for one day?
As a matter of policy, Apple Stores are actually holding on to new shipments of iPad 2s to sell them the next day, a source said to be familiar with Apple retail tells AppleInsider. He notes that the stock that went on sale Tuesday was actually delivered on Monday, but kept from changing hands in order to give inventory control workers time to "calmly and accurately" process it. Looks like Sprint is gearing up to take another shot at its seemingly unsinkable (but aging) iDEN push-to-talk network that it inherited from its Nextel acquisition -- which is a good thing seeing how it's only signed up for another three years' worth of maintenance. New Wi-Fi Diagnostics tool a part of Mac OS X 10.7 Lion
When Mac OS X 10.7 Lion leaps onto our Macs later this year, Apple's support specialists will have a new tool to use to troubleshoot those pesky Wi-Fi problems.
AppleInsider reports that a new Wi-Fi Diagnostics tool can be found in Lion's /System/Library/CoreServices folder, along with a number of other utilities and apps that are part of Mac OS X. Samsung Android MP3 players hit US with Galaxy Player 4, 5
Samsung presented some of the first significant competition to the iPod touch in years on Wednesday with US versions of the Galaxy S Wi-Fi 5.0 and its 4.0 counterpart. Simply called the Galaxy Player 4" and 5" in the country, both run Android 2.2 and will be upgradable to 2.3 in the future. Firefox 4 soll am 22. März erscheinen
Das nächste große Update von Firefox steht nicht mehr in weiter Ferne. Damon Sicore von Mozilla gab an, dass man den 22. März angepeilt habe und Version 4 an diesem Tag freigeben wolle. "Notable" slowdown at Foxconn manufacturing concerns Apple
A slowdown in Foxconn's production level may have a negative impact on the future supply of Apple products. According to JMP Securities, "(Foxconn) growth decelerated from 84% (year over year) in the month of December to 37% in January and then again to 26% in February."
The reasons for this deceleration are not known, but the slowdown is concerning enough that JMP has downgraded its outlook on Apple from "Market Outperform" to "Market Perform." This unfavorable assessment is not based on the quality of Apple's products, but on its ability to deliver products in a timely manner.

Samsung Galaxy Player 4 and 5 to arrive this spring in the US
Remember the Galaxy Player (or Galaxy S WiFi) we saw back at MWC? Sure you do, it basically strips out the 3G and calling functionality of a Galaxy S phone and leaves you with a Android 2.2 media player or shrunken tablet. 'Notable' Foxconn slowdown could hurt Apple shipments
Apple could face trouble as a result of its main manufacturing partner, Foxconn, says JMP Securities' Alex Gauna. Mozilla expects Firefox 4 final to go live March 22
Mozilla's senior engineering director Damon Sicore said later on Tuesday that the finished version of Firefox 4 should be ready on March 22. Barring any last-minute issues in a meeting late Wednesday morning, the team expected Release Candidate 1 to become the final release. In the event of a serious bug, a second release candidate would be posted with the fix and the release pushed back.

Sure, we saw some pricing leaks of the super slim Series 9 this morning, but Samsung is finally coming clean now with all the official details. Starting on March 17th, the 13.3-inch laptop with its Core i5 2547M processor, 128GB SSD, 4GB of RAM, and Windows 7 Home Premium will be available for $1,649. There's an interesting article from last year over on Macworld about how spammers try to use comment systems on discussion forums to promote their wares.

Vodafone, 3 confirm plans to carry iPad 2 in UK
The UK branches of Vodafone and 3 have both confirmed their intentions to sell the iPad 2. The carriers are mum on exact details, but are likely to carry over existing data plans. 3 charges £20 for 15GB of data a month on a two-year contract, or £15 for 10GB on a month-to-month basis; a contract also knocks down the price of the hardware. Vodafone is charging £10 for 1GB, £15 for 3GB and £25 for 5GB per month.

An LCD examination for the iPad 2 has shown both its quality but has also called out for major improvements in software and, eventually, in hardware. Like with the original iPad and the iPhone 4, DisplayMate gave the iPad 2's screen praise for having an IPS-based, 24-bit color panel but said it needed better antialiasing to improve the perceived smoothness of text and other elements. The "database for the rest of us," FileMaker's Bento for Mac, has hit version 4 today along with revised builds of the iPhone and iPad editions. It's a little bit surprising to realize that Bento has actually been on the market for three years now; in this edition, the product team has added some key features to the personal data manager, and for the first time it will be sold via the Mac App Store in addition to boxed/download sales.

Canon interessiert sich für Thunderbolt
Fotografie-Pionier Canon wird nach Apple das zweite grosse Schwergewicht das auf Thunderbolt setzen wird. Canon sieht den Einsatz der Intel/Apple-Schnittstelle für die eigenen Produkte vor allem bei den Video-Geräten. Hiroo Edakubo, der Chef der Canon Video Group, sagt, Canon sei sehr aufgeregt auf die neue Technologie und siehe darin eine neue Form der Performance und Vereinfachung des Video-Production-Marktes. Auch für Fotoapparate dürfte die Schnittstelle indes interessant sein — vom Prinzip her (Über Thunderbolt soll man alle Geräte an einem Anschluss angeschlossen haben) eigentlich auch Drucker. Vorerst wird Canon aber bei Video-Geräten Thunderbolt einsetzen. Wann erste Canon-Videokameras mit Thunderbolt-Schnittstelle — d.h. mit einer potentiellen Übetragungsgeschwindigkeit von 10 Gbit pro Sekunde — auf den Markt kommen, ist aktuell aber noch nicht bekannt.

TUAW's Daily App: Liqua Pop
EA's latest game on the App Store is called Liqua Pop. It's an original puzzle game that has you popping liquid bubbles of the same color in order to send a little toad on the side of the screen to the top. The presentation in this one is very well done -- the music is cool and clear, and the graphics are shiny and very (wait for it) fluid. The bubbles show up quickly, and eventually bugs appear in the bubbles and add a little complication to the mix. But overall, the gameplay is pretty simple, and you get into a nice rhythm of building up bubbles and shaking the device to pop them.
Unfortunately, the game's thin on content -- there's just one mode, and while there are plenty of levels to play through, it'd be nice to see a little variety to the game

Zediva offers online rentals, competes with Netflix, Redbox
Zediva, a video rental company based in Sunnyvale California has launched an online movie rental service for new release movies. For as little as $1, users can instantly watch movies wherever they have access to an internet connection. Zediva is offering users who sign up before March 31, two free rentals. Zediva claim that they will deliver new release movies online, weeks before similar titles become available online through Netflix or Redbox, as they will not withhold the online viewing option on new release DVDs as Netflix and Redbox do.

Google Apps erhält ab sofort wöchentlich Updates
Google bietet Kunden seiner Online-Anwendungen Apps ab sofort zwei Möglichkeiten an, Updates zu beziehen: Nutzer des sogenannten "Rapid Release Track" erhalten neue Funktionen, sobald sie die Tests der Qualitätssicherung bestanden haben. Bei Interviews kommt es immer mal wieder vor, das einzelne Passagen falsch ‘interpretiert’ werden. Letztes prominentes Opfer war Phil Collins, der in einem kürzlich erschienenen Interview eigentlich von einer kurzen Pause gesprochen hatte und dann im veröffentlichten Transkript aber gar von einem Rücktritt aus dem Musik-Business die Rede war. Street Fighter IV on sale for Japan, ChatTime offering free calls
We've already written a little bit about how Apple is helping out with the disaster in Japan, and a few iPhone app developers are doing their part as well. In a nice gesture, Sega has put some of its apps, including Street Fighter IV, on sale for just 99 cents. All proceeds from the sale will go to relief for earthquake victims via the Red Cross. Gaming may be the last thing on most people's minds at a time like this (you certainly don't need a free game to donate), but it's a nice gesture in addition to what's been done so far.

Netflix rumored to spend $100 million or more outbidding cable networks for one new TV show

Verizon may have already taken more than 12 percent of iPhone users in the US market, according to numbers gathered by mobile ad network Chitika. Staples' slate of slates leaks out, corroborates Samsung 8.9-incher and the HP Opal?
For over a month, we've held onto a document -- allegedly a Staples tablet guide -- that's been looking increasingly wrong as the days fly by. Tablet release dates were too soon, and prices were far too high, which made us think it was either a forgery or sorely out of date. (Curious? See our copy after the break.) This week, however, Droid-Life published a far more likely looking copy of the very same thing, which appears to be both quite recent and fairly interesting. Companies to watch, from the SXSW trade show floor
After a tour of the SXSW trade show floor, here are some of the companies we'll be profiling in the coming weeks. Of course, there's always a mix of companies at SXSW: some film, some music, many web services -- but far fewer social media companies than last year.
We've covered RedLaser and LaCie in the past, and while LaCie has new products (more hard drives, surprise!) and RedLaser has gone local, I'm going to focus on a few mobile apps and accessories you might not have heard of yet.

Internet Explorer 9 gets WebM support with 'preview' plug-in from Google, internet video gets more friendly
Google has released an early WebM plug-in for Microsoft's latest and greatest browser, IE9 -- stepping in to fill a gap that Microsoft itself refused to fill. Piracy is a problem of 'global pricing,' not enforcement, claims new report

Netflix rumored in exclusive for original, major content
A rumor from an atypical source may have signaled a change to original, major content. The movie rental service reportedly beat out AMC and HBO to get rights for two seasons, or 26 episodes, of the David Fincher-directed and Kevin Spacey-led series House of Cards. The details described to Deadline Hollywood put the value at over $100 million.

Metacritic now charting iOS games
Gaming review aggregation site Metacritic has posted that it is now charting for iOS games through its service. The site has long charted movies, music, and video games as an overall average of all the scores found online (out of 100), and now it's going to do the same thing for iOS games. Metacritic will do this by aggregating all of the scores found online with a weighted average, and assigning a score out of 100 to each title in the system. Apple refurbs: six Macs at two price points, $849 and $1019
Apple's online store today has a nice blend of refurbished Macs at two very low price points. The first three are all priced at $849 after a $150 discount. First is a refurbished 11.6-inch MacBook Air with a 1.4GHz processor, 2GB of RAM and a 64GB solid state drive. Next is a white MacBook with a 2.4GHz processor, 2GB of RAM and a 250GB hard drive. Also priced at $849 is the refurb. Mac mini with Snow Leopard Server, a 2.66GHz processor, 4GB of RAM and dual 500GB hard drives.

Web apps on iOS 4.3 take mysterious performance hit
Testing by developers and The Register has revealed that iOS 4.3 makes changes to the way "web apps" run that significantly impacts their performance compared to fully-native apps or apps run within the MobileSafari browser. In part, this is due to the presence of the new Nitro JavaScript engine, which significantly enhances performance -- but at present only works inside Safari. Other factors that hurt the performance of non-Safari web apps, however, have some wondering if Apple is deliberately deprecating the format to promote its own App Store.
