Slimmed Galaxy Tab 10.1 tested, may outdo iPad 2 after all
Samsung's newly thinned Galaxy Tab 10.1 was given a hands-on Friday (video below) that supported its fiercely disputed claims to having a thinner design. Well-known prototype leakers at Vietnam's Tinhte found the supposedly 0.33-inch Android 3.0 tablet in working form at a trade show and gave it a quick demo, proving that it still had the speed of the dual-core Tegra 2 but did appear to be slightly thinner than the iPad 2. Spanische Schlaumeier haben ein Modellauto ausgetüftelt, das Getränkedosenlaschen aus Alu tankt. Oder so ähnlich. Jedenfalls wird im Tank des Vehikels Wasserstoff erzeugt, wenn Alu-Teile in die Natrium-Hydroxid-Brühe geworfen werden, die dort schwappt. Ob das alles Hokuspokus ist und wenn nicht, wie oft es funktioniert, wissen wir angesichts heute unverzeihlicher Ignoranz im Chemieunterricht leider nicht. Der Designer Kirk Schneider ist nicht nur ein fantasiebegabter Bursche sondern auch ein ausgemachter Optimist: Sein Handy-Konzpet Morphy, dessen Form sich dynamisch der jeweiligen Umgebung anpasst, könnte schon in 18 Monaten auf den Markt kommen, wenn es nach Schneider geht. Darüber, wie das en Detail möglich sein soll, hält er sich leider bedeckt. Klar ist unterdessen, dass Schneider vor allem Hosentaschen als natürliche Umgebung seines flexiblen Handys im Auge hat und dass die Energie für die Verformung irgendwie aus der Körperwärme generiert werden soll. Meizu MX shown, may give clues to iPhone 5 design
Meizu head Jack Wong chose Sunday forum post to show the successor to the M9 in what could be an indirect clue as to iPhone 5 features. Now called the MX, the device once known as the M9II will keep its 640x940 resolution but on a larger four-inch screen. ASUS hat auf der letzten CES die Gesten-Controller Xtion Pro und Wavi Xtion vorgestellt, die nicht ganz zufällig an Microsofts Kinect erinnern: Die zugrunde liegende Technik kommt in beiden Fällen von der israelischen Firma Prime Sense. Der Xtion Pro erlebt jetzt seine Marktpremiere - vorerst aber nur in Japan, wo der Controller für 19.980 Yen (rund 170 Euro) zu haben ist. Das Pro-Modell richtet sich allerdings an Entwickler, die mit dem dazugehörigen SDK eigene Anwendungen austüfteln können. John Nack, Principal Product Manager at Adobe, posted a video demo of Adobe Nav for iPad on his blog Saturday morning. Adobe Nav is one of the first apps to showcase the new tablet integration features included with the software maker's upcoming Creative Suite version 5.5 (CS5.5). When the new MacBook Airs began shipping last October they sported Toshiba's Blade X-gale SSD (Solid State Drive). However, the latest batch of MacBook Airs appear to use an blade SSD from Samsung. Apple typically will use multiple vendors to supply the same parts for a particular product, as there usually isn't a performance difference in using parts from different vendors. However, in the case of MacBook Airs equipped with Toshiba SSDs and MacBook Airs with Samsung SSDs, there is a difference.

Square readers reaching Apple stores in major partnership
Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey's Square payment readers got a major lift this weekend after Apple started officially selling them in stores. Both the online Apple Store and its retail shops are carrying the reader this week, including in a new black color. HP's TouchPad cloud music, video plans leak in presentation
HP's intention to build a webOS cloud media locker, and possibly beat Apple and Google to the feature, was given more definitive support late Friday after a leaked presentation. A pair of slides describing the TouchPad reportedly showed both the known HP Movie Store but also an intelligent, online music syncing option. PreCentral's copy showed that it would not only allow remotely storing and streaming music, including songs users "don't yet own," but would determine owners' preferred music and prioritize it for local caching on the TouchPad itself.

Sign of the times: iPad 2 heads to Toys R Us
When we were younger, we lusted after the top-shelf electric train set. The pow-pow-Power Wheels jeep. The Virtual Boy. These days, that rich kid down the street will have a very different sort of toy. When ModMyi reported that Toys 'R' Us was training associates to sell the iPad 2 weeks ago, we thought it was a leftover April Fools', but sure enough, Geoffrey the Giraffe will begin pushing Apple's tablet to individuals who don't want to grow up as soon as tomorrow morning.

Toys R Us getting iPad 2 tomorrow
We heard a little while back that the iPad 2 was coming to retailer Toys R Us, of all places, and now 9to5Mac follows that up with news that the day arrives tomorrow. As of tomorrow, Sunday April 17, the magical, revolutionary tablet will be ready to go, along with a selection of Smart Covers. Two new Apple Stores coming to Ontario, Canada
It's always nice when a TUAW reader tips us off to a rumor of a new North American Apple Store, and especially cool when the rumor includes two new stores.
In this case, Canadian reader Noah let us know that he was looking at job postings on Apple's site and found two new stores in Ontario listed with the information "New Stores, New Opportunities." A quick look at the Canadian job listings for Apple retail stores shows that the stores will be in Waterloo (Conestoga) and Burlington (Mapleview Centre), Ontario.

eMac becomes cat bed
This eMac-turned-cat bed is the product of a friend of mine here in LA named Colin Hughes. A little while back, he got a new computer to replace his old (though still working eMac), and instead of junking it, he decided to clean out the hardware and turn the case into a makeshift kitty pad. He says it took about an hour, mostly because the inside of the case was full of dust, but after transferring all of his files off, cleaning it out, and taking a screwdriver to the actual monitor, the case was ready for its feline tenants.
The cat above is named Little Mama, and she shares the setup with Colin's other cat, Elvis. Cute stuff -- you can see a few more shots of the conversion in the gallery below.
