HTC Thunderbolt gets an FCC-approved teardown
We've already seen the HTC Thunderbolt hit the FCC, but it's just now getting to the good stuff now that the phone has actually been released. While it's not exactly to iFixit levels of detail, the agency has now provided us with a reasonably good teardown of the device, which lets you see just what makes this speed demon of a phone tick. The Moov wireless case for iPhone streams video to TV
A company named Olion has introduced a neat add-on for the iPhone called The Moov. It's a case for the iPhone 4 that connects to the dock and streams out video wirelessly. The presenter in the video (which you can watch after the break) calls it the "first mobile to TV solution," but of course, that's not true -- we've seen lots of ways to get video out of the iPhone and onto the TV.
Still, this one's pretty elegant, and it's all wireless, even though that means it's limited by about three hours of battery life. The speed in the video looks good, and the case sends off a signal to any WHDI receiver. Olion doesn't have a price or release date yet -- the Israe

HP has debuted a new iPhone app, ePrint service. The app's main specialty is printing within a networked enterprise environment. In such a case tasks are funneled through HP's ePrint Enterprise Administrative Server software, which provides extra data security.

Viacom says 'not so fast' on that Cablevision iPad app
The pioneering road that leads to watching cable programming on a iPad just got a bit bumpier. Cablevision has received notice from Viacom that the cable provider's iPad app, which provides both live TV and video on demand to subscribers, is stepping over the line in terms of programming it can legitimately stream via the app.
Last week Viacom hit Time Warner Cable with a lawsuit over another iPad app. Time Warner has taken Viacom to court, claiming it has every right to distribute cable programming via iPad as long as it limits the programming to its cable/ISP customers. Earlier this month Time Warner

Sharp suspends production at its two largest LCD factories following Japanese quake
Toshiba, Hitachi, and Panasonic already said they would shutter their liquid crystal display plants for a month following the 9.0 magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami that struck the country on March 11. Now, Japan's largest exporter of LCD TVs (Sharp, for those keeping notes) has suspended production at its two biggest factories, thanks to a shortage of a gas used in the manufacturing process. Logitech's wireless Touch Lapdesk hits the FCC
There's not exactly a lot of details on this one, but it looks like Logitech may be getting set to introduce some new company for its speaker / lapdesk contraption, the Speaker Lapdesk. A device known as the Touch Lapdesk N600 has now turned up at the FCC, which apparently not only adds some "touch" to the equation, but some 2.4GHz wireless connectivity as well. Unfortunately, that's about all that the FCC's willing to share at the moment, but there's a handsome label after the break, and a couple of dozen pages of test reports at the source link below if you're looking for a bit more evidence that this thing actually exists.

iChair for iPad 2 looking for a little Kickstarter love
In the last year, just about every iPad case or stand has made it to my office for a review. While I don't always write them up, I often show the products on TUAW TV Live. It doesn't matter what I'm showing; there's always someone for whom the product is perfect, and a lot of people liked the case that I'm writing about here. For people who want the protection of a case and the convenience of the stand, the iChair (no, not the helmsman's chair from Norway) is one of the better designs I've seen.

Apple suppliers post 141 percent growth in March
Collectively, Apple's largest Taiwan-based suppliers grew sales about 141 percent year-over-year in March, according to Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White. Google Latitude gets check-in deals across all of the US
Google has expanded its Latitude check-in service by partnering with thousands of retailers and shops across the US to offer check-in deals. Android and iPhone users can take advantage, with some places offering discounts, and others a free snack. Viacom claims Cablevision iPad app breaking rights too
Viacom this weekend lumped Cablevision into its disputes over iPad TV streaming rights. Similar to its fight with Time Warner Cable, Viacom argued that Cablevision hadn't been given permission to stream over Apple's tablet. Review: SwitchEasy Canvas for iPad 2

iOS 4.3.2 may fix Verizon iPad, FaceTime issues
Apple's iOS 4.3.2 is due to land in the upcoming weeks and speculation is running rampant about what changes this update may bring. According to BGR which claims to have the update in hand, iOS 4.3.2 will fix the data roaming issue reportedly plaguing iPad 2 tablets on Big Red's 3G network. This annoying bug reportedly causes the iPad 2 to always roam on Verizon's 3G network.
The update may also cure the issue with FaceTime which is causing the iPad 2's front camera to freeze when the video chat application launches.

Leaked docs suggest Verizon Droid Incredible 2 will be a world phone

Rumor: iPhone 5 won't be shipping until fiscal 2012
Here's the latest iPhone 5 rumor. Business Insider (BI) suggests that iPhone 5 production won't begin until September, which means at the earliest it would hit shelves in October, or the first quarter of Apple's fiscal 2012.
BI goes on to suggest that it's possible the iPhone 5 won't ship until calendar 2012. The report comes from an Avian Securities analyst, based on conversations with a "key component supplier" to Apple.
I really don't know about this rumor. I can see Apple holding off on the iPhone 5 until the fall so it could add LTE. Also, such a delay would give Verizon iPhone 4 customers who bought on day one a little more time to feel that their device is the latest and greatest. Acer changes its logo, hopes to start afresh
Over in Acer HQ, it's out with the old and in with the new. Having bid ciao to former CEO Gianfranco Lanci, the Taiwanese company is now slapping a fresh coat of paint and a softer typeface upon its corporate identity. Blackmagic UltraStudio capture boxes get Thunderbolt, USB 3
Blackmagic used the start of the NAB media show to bring out a pair of video capture boxes to use the latest in input. The UltraStudio 3D is one of the first of its kind to use Intel and Apple's Thunderbolt and uses it to provide a separate video stream for the left-eye and right-eye feeds in a single stereoscopic 3D image, even on a notebook like the MacBook Pro. iPhone 4 to hit India via Bharti Airtel Ltd, Aircel
The iPhone 4 may land in India in the coming months according to a report from Reuters. Both Bharti Airtel and smaller rival Aircel confirmed they would soon carry the iPhone 4. Unfortunately, residents of India who want to mark a launch date on their calendar will have to wait as neither carrier announced an exact availability date for Apple's popular smartphone.

Intel rolls out Atom Z670 Oak Trail processor for tablets
Well, it's a bit past the end of March, but Intel has now finally gotten official with its new Atom Z670 processor for tablets, which you might know better by its Oak Trail codename. Shairport mimics AirPort Express based on private Apple key
A developer, James Laird, has reportedly reverse-engineered the private key used in the AirPort Express. The immediate result is a piece of open-source software called Shairport, which emulates the Express and allows iTunes streaming to normally unsupported third-party software or hardware. Adobe Audition moves to Mac with CS5.5, Soundbooth EOL
It's one of those things where you blink and you almost miss it, but part of Adobe's CS5.5 announcement earlier today includes the news that Adobe is finally releasing its Audition software. Adobe Soundbooth, its Mac-only audio toolset, has reached end-of-life status and development and sales will cease April 24. A beta version of Adobe Audition for the Mac was released in November.

When ASUS dumped the source code for its 10.1-inch, Honeycomb powered Transformer tablet online we knew it was only a matter of time before someone cracked it open and bent it to their will. Before it hit store shelves here in the U.S. MoDaCo founder Paul O'Brien managed to get his hands on one of the upcoming Android devices and, with a little help from Twitter user BumbleDroid, gained root access to the tablet. So, you'll still have to hang out for a bit before getting yours, but at least when it lands you won't have to wait to get your hack on.

iOS 4.3.2 to fix FaceTime, Verizon iPad 2 flaws, says source
The iOS 4.3.2 update will, at a minimum, address a pair of critical problems that have arisen since v4.3 and v4.3.1, an Apple source informs. The first is with FaceTime, which has been suffering from freezes and out-of-place images suddenly appearing. Analyst claims iPhone 5 production only due in September
Avian Securities in a research note on Monday claimed that the still-rumored decision to move the iPhone 5 past WWDC could see production start even later than thought. A conversation with a key part supplier convinced the research group that the new model would only be in production from September. Since Apple usually needs time to build up supply, this could mean a launch only in "very late" 2011 or even in early 2012.

Nintendo 3DS sales affected by iPod touch and iPad, says IHS iSuppli
Nintendo recently launched the 3DS and the portable gaming device is selling strongly. Despite this burst of early sales, IHS iSuppli predicts the 3DS will not reach the high sales numbers of its predecessor, the Nintendo DS. iSuppli predicts Nintendo will sell 70 million 3DS gaming systems by 2015, a figure that is 21 million less than the 91 million in sales racked up by the original DS at the same point in its sales cycle.

Intel finally ships Atom for tablets, talks Cedar Trail
Intel on Monday finally began shipping its first Oak Trail chip, the Atom Z670, and gave a preview of its next-generation Cedar Trail platform. The more tablet-ready processor, first unveiled a year ago, is due to reach its first shipping devices in May. iPad 2 gets glasses-free 3D display using front-facing camera for head tracking
Now that the iPad 2 has a front facing-camera and some decent horsepower under the hood, there's a lot of potential for really interesting camera-plus-screen co-ordination hacks. The clever folks over at the Engineering Human-Computer Interaction Research group have managed to combine a feed from the front-facing camera, with a bit of software wizardry, to track the position of a person's head in 3D in real-time.

Es gibt Dinge, die muss man nicht haben, bestechen dennoch durch ihre besondere Nischigkeit. Diese Schokoladen-Kamera wäre so ein Beispiel. Es gibt sie in drei Farben. Weiß, Kakao und Erdbeere und essen lassen sie sich leider auch nicht. Dafür hat man eine unauffällige Spionagekamera, die mit 1,3 MP (640x480 VGA) Fotos auch so richtig Lo-Fi macht. ShairPort emulator cracks open the door for more unofficial AirPlay streaming options
There's already a few unofficial AirPlay applications out there, but looks like developer James Laird has now gotten right to the heart of the matter and enabled a whole host of new streaming possibilities. Here's apparently managed to crack the private key used by Apple in the AirPort Express (literally by ripping one open and dumping the ROM), and he's used that to build an emulator dubbed "ShairPort," which will let you stream music from iTunes to any third-party software -- or hardware, for that matter, if someone decided to go as far as to build a device that takes advantage of the private key. Gartner: iOS wird Tablet-Markt bis 2015 dominieren
Gartner geht davon aus, dass Apples iOS den Tabletmarkt bis 2015 beherrschen wird. Für 2011 schätzen die Analysen seinen Marktanteil auf 69 Prozent, 2015 soll er immer noch bei 47 Prozent liegen. Apple sews up carbon fiber whiz -- could lighter devices be in the works?
The aircraft industry is in the midst of a major change from building large passenger airplane structures from metal alloys to building those same structures out of composite materials like carbon fiber. The result? Aircraft that are much lighter (like that Boeing 787 Dreamliner pictured above) but just as strong as those made completely of metal.
Apple might be looking at mimicking the aircraft industry by making future mobile devices out of carbon fiber, as MacStories is reporting that the company has hired a new Senior Composites Engineer by the name of Kevin Keeney.

Ein Tisch hat bekanntlich Beine, dennoch scheint noch keiner so richtig auf die Idee gekommen zu sein, den Tischbeinen auch die eigentliche Bedeutung und Fähigkeit zukommen zu lassen, für die sie gemacht worden sind, Gehen. StripeSpotter turns wild zebras into trackable barcodes
We've heard plenty of stories over the past few years about tagging animals with RFID chips, but we've never been particularly keen on the idea. JBL ships AirPlay-enabled On Air speaker dock
After some delay (we posted about the announcement in March) JBL has announced that the AirPlay-enabled On Air speaker dock is officially shipping to Best Buy and Apple Stores (see press release below). The system lets customers stream music from their AirPlay-enabled devices, like Macs, iPhones, iPod touches and iPads. It's also pretty cool looking, in a Darth Vader-meets-radial-tire kind of way.

Apple AirPlay private key exposed, released
Enterprising software developer James Laird was looking to stream music without AirPlay. Since an appropriate AirPort Express emulator did not exist, Laird reverse-engineered the Airport Express private key and published an open source AirPort Express emulator called ShairPort as a result.

Adobe stellt Creative Suite 5.5 vor
Adobe hat seine Sammlung an Design-, Grafik- und Produktionsprogrammen Creative Suite auf Version 5.5 aktualisiert. Zu den Neuerungen zählen ein verkürzter Upgrade-Turnus von 24 Monaten und die Einführung eines Software-Abonnements. Das Update verbessert den HTML-5-Support, die Integration der einzelnen Produkte und den Arbeitsablauf, mit dem sich Projekte jetzt leicht für verschiedene (Mobil-)Plattformen anpassen lassen sollen. Just the other day I was talking about more in-depth strategy games for iOS, and here's one: Great Little War Game is a pretty deep tactical warfare game built specifically for Apple's platform. It's based on what's essentially a hexagonal system and is very similar to Advance Wars for the DS, with cartoony little troops fighting little tactical battles. Gartner: iPad will outsell Android tablets to at least 2015
A fresh long-term protection from Gartner has given Apple the lead in the tablet market for at least the next four years. In spite of the Xoom and other Android 3.0 tablets, the iPad is still expected to dominate 2011 with 68.7 percent share and to only gradually decrease. It would have 63.5 percent of the tablet arena in 2012 and would still have the largest share in 2015 at 47.1 percent.

Panasonic has used the NAB show in Las Vegas to unveil the AG-3DP1, a 3D P2 HD twin-lens shoulder-mount camcorder. The AG-3DP1 offers a larger imager, 10-bit color depth, AVC-Intra recording to P2 media, and EFP-style shooting to offer affordable 3D production for live events, sports, documentaries and independent films. Rogue modder rips off stingy consumer, puzzles repairmen... all with a USB thumb drive
Welcome to today's episode of "You Get What You Pay For," starring some poor sap in Russia who bought an external hard drive in China for a "very, very low price." It seemed like a bargain, until the schmo noticed that video files were picking up from the tail end, as if the preceding footage had vanished. When the folks at a local repair shop tore the disk apart they found a dinky 128MB thumb drive running in a loop, emptying itself when full only to start saving more data. Laugh all you want, but the repair guys (and us, frankly) are still scratching their heads as to how those scam artists pulled off this mod in the first place.

LG adds 'Tweet-TV' enabled Android phone to its list of Mobile DTV prototypes
Whenever mobile digital television broadcasts finally take off LG will be ready and it's latest concept design -- following the autostereoscopic 3D screen shown at CES -- is the Tweet-TV pictured above. At the National Association of Broadcasters show this week it's demonstrating the prototype Android phone with a Harris MDTV antenna that also pulls in relevant tweets and displays them over the broadcast being watched. Steve Jobs' Biographie bald erhältlich
Aus den USA kommt die Meldung, dass Apple-CEO Steve Jobs offiziell einer Biographie über sein Leben zugestimmt hat. So wird der Autor Walter Isaacson Im Frühjahr 2012 sein Buch "iSteve - The Book of Jobs" veröffentlichen. Bereits 2009 spekulierte man über dieses Buch, in das Isaacson viel Arbeit und Zeit steckte.So führte er mehrere Interviews mit unter anderem Steve's Familie, seinen Kollegen und natürlich ihm selbst. Mit dem Wechsel des Kestral Bicycles CEO Kevin Kenney zu Apple wird deutlich, dass Apple ein ununterbrochen hohes Interesse an Gehäuse aus Kohlenstofffasern (CFK) hat. Smartphone-Boom: HTC meldet Rekordergebnis im ersten Quartal

Adobe plans to demonstrate three iPad apps designed to work in conjunction with the forthcoming Adobe CS 5.5 update. Rather than representing a standalone implementation of Photoshop running on the iPad (as demoed earlier this month), these apps are more like enhancements to the existing toolsets running in Adobe CS on a PC or Mac.

Authorized Steve Jobs biography due in early 2012
As we reported in February of 2010, Walter Isaacson, former managing editor of Time magazine, has been working on an authorized autobiography of Apple CEO Steve Jobs for some time. Over at Apple 2.0/Fortune, Phil Elmer-Dewitt reports that iSteve: The Book of Jobs has been completed and will be published in early 2012.

Vulkano Flow now available, does 480p placeshifting for under a hundred bucks
Monsoon has announced the "general availability" of a new placeshifting box, the Vulkano Flow. As we learned during CES, this box has a $99 price tag and trims last year's Vulkano to just the placeshifting essentials. Apple's Steve Jobs agrees to biography due in 2012
Apple co-founder Steve Jobs broke with expectations on Sunday after Simon & Schuster said he had agreed to participate in an authorized biography. Aspen president chief and former Time managing editor Walter Isaacson is penning iSteve: The Book of Jobs with an expected shelf date of early 2012. The official access gave him rare access to a direct interview with Jobs as well as his family, coworkers, and also challengers.

US Navy's solid-state laser sets boat ablaze (video)
See that flaming wreckage in the picture above? A laser did that, mounted on board a second vessel similarly bobbing on top of the ocean last week. Yes, even though the United States Navy told us that legitimate seafaring death rays might take another decade to materialize, basic weaponized lasers are ready today, as the 15-kilowatt gun attached to the USS Paul Foster happily demonstrates. Apple hires carbon fiber bike expert as senior engineer
Apple has quietly hired in a move that could realize its plans for carbon fiber-based devices. The CEO of carbon fiber bike designer Kestrel Bicycles, Kevin Kenney, has listed himself as having become a Senior Composites Engineer at Apple as of this month. He had already been working with Apple on a carbon fiber shell patent as early as 2009 and may have attracted enough attention through his work to become a permanent employee.

EraThink EraPalm runs like a netbook, looks like a portable gaming handheld
Looking at this odd bird of a device on display at the China Consumer Electronics Fair inspires tired cliches about mating gadgets. But really, it took a wild night between a Windows 7 tablet and a portable gaming console (with a possible cameo by a UMPC) to spawn the EraThink EraPalm. This handheld runs Windows 7 and has a 5-inch (800 x 480) capacative touchscreen that slides out to reveal a full QWERTY keyboard -- all of which is reminiscent of the extinct OQO Model 02, except for the gaming controls flanking the display.
