Apple issues OS X 10.8.5 Supplemental Update, iTunes 11.1.1
Apple has released OS X v10.8.5 Supplemental Update 1.0 for Mountain Lion. The update, which is available in the Mac App Store or through the link above, provides the following fixes:
Resolves an issue that may prevent certain applications from using the FaceTime HD camera on mid-2013 MacBook Air systems
Fixes an issue that may cause external drives to be ejected after the computer goes to sleep
Addresses an issue that may prevent HDMI audio from working after waking from sleep
Fixes an issue that may prevent certain USB Bluetooth adapters from working.
A restart of your Mac is required to install the update.

Apple acquires Cue, personal assistant app for the iPhone and iPad
Relative to previous years, Apple has been on an acquisition spree in recent years, with the company confirming today that they acquired a personal assistant app called Cue.
Cue works by combing through a user's varied internet accounts, determining what's useful, and then aggregating it all into a single "intelligent" snapshot.

Apple Seeds New 13A598 Build of Mavericks to AppleSeed Members
Apple has seeded a new release of OS X Mavericks to members of the AppleSeed beta testing program, a little more than two weeks after the release of the eighth Developer Preview. DP 8 had a version number of 13A584, while today's release is build 13A598. Separately, 9to5Mac reports that this build may be a GM candidate, according to AppleSeed members, while other sources have said the final release build will be several versions newer. The OS was reportedly nearly ready for release a few weeks ago, but was pushed back because of "critical bugs". Stealth Inc will soon infiltrate your iOS devices
The highly rated stealth puzzler Stealth Inc will eventually break free of its current console and PC shackles and find its way to iOS, reports Pocket Gamer. The game -- which was originally titled Stealth Bastard before that name raised too many red flags -- tasks you with guiding an adorable clone through a series of deadly puzzles.

Motrr Galileo robotic iPhone mount to finally ship in November
Today seems to be the day for delayed Kickstarter projects to announce that they're finally going to ship. Earlier it was the Narrative Clip (neé Memoto), now the long-delayed Motrr Galileo robotic iPhone platform is available for pre-order at 10 percent off list price at US$149.95 and will ship next month.
The device caught the attention of the iOS community last year when the remote control mount was first outed on Kickstarter. Galileo can pan and tilt a full 360° at speeds of up to 200° per second. An app will provide controls for the mount, or a web browser can be used from anywhere to aim your iPhone.

Apple Acquires Personal Assistant App Cue
Apple has acquired Cue, a personal assistant app that was designed to aggregate information from email, contacts, and calendars into a daily snapshot, reports AppleInsider. MacRumors heard similar rumors about the potential acquisition several weeks ago, but we were unable to verify the claim. Today's video tip highlights a little-known feature in Safari under iOS 7. At any time while you're using the mobile browser, tap on the bookmarks button, then tap the "@" button to see links that have been shared via Twitter by people you follow.
Once you've found a link you want to look at, tapping it not only opens the associated web page, but also displays the tweet it was linked from at the top of the mobile Safari window.

Exif data is the partially hidden part of a photo file that most people don't think about when they upload a photo to a service like Dropbox or send a photo to a friend. This EXIF data includes the camera model you are using, basic settings of the camera when the picture was taken, the photo resolution and, if your camera has GPS, the location where the photo was taken.
Depending on your perspective, the addition of location data to your photos can be a blessing or a curse. On the one hand, this EXIF data allows you to identify long-lost photos based on the time and location they were taken. New Report Summarizes Display Rumors for Future Apple Devices
Apple is shaking up the display market with a multitude of upcoming product debuts and enhancements, according to Korean site ET News (via 9to5Mac). The site summarizes several known product rumors that will impact display manufacturers, including larger iPhone and iPads, an OLED iWatch, and IGZO displays for its MacBook lineup. Multiple reports have suggested that Apple is working on both a larger iPhone and a larger iPad. ET News suggests that a larger iPhone will be at least 5 inches, in line with a September report from The Wall Street Journal indicating that Apple was experimenting with a number of screen sizes from 4.8 inches to 6 inches.

Amazon's Set-Top Box Competitor to Apple TV and Roku Launching Before Holidays

Google Music coming to iOS this month
Our sister site Engadget has a nice scoop this morning -- Google is testing a native iOS Google Music app internally at this time, and they'll launch that app for public consumption later this month. The app will highlight Google's Play Music All Access streaming service.
Engadget notes that users in more than 19 countries can sign up for the Standard and All Access music services for offline or streaming access. The iOS app will apparently echo the feature set of the Android app, which offers custom radio and smart recommendation features.

Narrative Clip now the new name for Memoto wearable lifetracking camera
About a year ago, TUAW highlighted a Kickstarter project aimed at making a tiny wearable camera that would take photos about once every 30 seconds for upload to a website where they'd be condensed into a continuous lifelog. The project was delayed, but now the Swedish developers behind the project report that they've received new funding, that they've changed the name of the device and their company and that first deliveries will take place on November 1, 2013.

Official Google Music iOS App to Launch Later This Month
Google will launch an official app for its 'Google Play Music All Access' subscription music service later this month, according to a report from Engadget. The countdown has started and the new Apple "spaceship" campus in Cupertino, Calif., is one step closer to launch. Last night, the Cupertino Planning Commission approved Apple's plans for the campus. When a new Apple Store is planned and construction begins, there's usually a notice on ifoAppleStore -- the Web's go-to site for Apple Store information -- and lots of speculation about when the new retail outlet will open. Rdio launches free service on iOS, Android
The streaming Internet radio battles continue with an announcement today by Rdio that it has launched a free Internet radio service in the US, Canada and Australia today. Rdio recently inked a deal with radio station owner Cumulus Media which will start bearing fruit with the new service, as the Rdio's Web radio player will feature ads sold by Cumulus Media.
The free Rdio app (also available for Android) will not play ads between songs, at least at the present time. Rdio is counting on hooking listeners with the free service, then getting them to sign up for a $10 monthly subscription that will unlock the ability to select albums

HAPIlabs has announced that their unique HAPIfork smart fork is now available for pre-order and will ship on October 18th. The HAPIfork was first demoed at CES this year and has successfully raised over US$100,000 on Kickstarter. HAPIfork monitors and tracks your eating habits by tracking your arm motion while eating with it. An LED will light up and the fork will vibrate if it registers that your plate-to-mouth speed is too rapid, which suggests you are eating too fast.

«Der von Apple beim iPhone 5s eingeführte 64-Bit-Prozessor «A7» ist nichts weiteres als ein Marketing-Instrument, aus welchem die Konsumenten keinen Profit schlagen werden», so Qualcomms Marketing-Chef Anand Chandrasekher gegenüber dem Magazin Techworld. Der Vertreter der Konkurrenz verneint damit einen signifikanten Vorteil des neuen A7-Prozessors gegenüber den klassischen ARM-Prozessoren.
Chandrasekher begründet seinen Standpunkt mit dem Argument, dass man 64-Bit-Prozessoren insbesondere bei 4 GB Arbeitsspeicher oder mehr braucht. Insbesondere im PC- und Server-Segment machen 64-Bit-Prozessoren Sinn. Zuvor gäbe es keinen Grund, auf diese Technologie umzusteigen. Das iPhone 5s selbst verfügt über lediglich 1 GB Arbeitsspeicher.

A number of schools across the U.S. have found that upgrading their student-used iPads to iOS 7 removed previous supervision profiles on the devices, AllThingsD reports. Netflix 5.0 for iOS adds AirPlay streaming and HD video for iOS 7
Netflix has released version 5.0 of its iOS app that adds some much-requested featuresif you have iOS 7. The first feature is HD video. Customers can now watch HD video just like Android users have been doing for months.
But the biggest new feature is AirPlay streaming. Now users don't have to rely on AirPlay mirroring to watch Netflix videos on their Apple TV (or the actual Apple TV Netflix app). Users can simply use Netflix on the iPhone or iPad to select a movie and watch it on their Apple TV. This means they don't need to keep the Netflix app open on their iOS device like they would have to with AirPlay mirroring.
Both the HD video and Airplay streaming require iOS 7.

Nächste iPad-Generationen: verspätetes iPad mini, iPad 5 ohne Touch ID?
Gemäss den Informationen von Reuters könnte sich die Einführung der nächsten iPad-mini-Generation verzögern. Grund für diese Verzögerung soll das Retina Display sein, welches mutmasslich in der zweiten Generation des Tablets verbaut wird. So könnten die Zulieferer erst im Jahr 2014 in der Lage sein, die Produktion auf das gewünschte Niveau hochzufahren. Auch wenn Apple das iPad mini 2 bereits in diesem Jahr veröffentlichen würde, wäre es während dem wichtigen Weihnachtsgeschäft nicht in der geforderten Menge verfügbar. Gemäss Insidern bereiten den drei Display-Herstellern Samsung, LG und Sharp die rigiden Energiespar-Anforderungen, welche Apple an das neue Retina Display stellt, grosse Schwierigkeiten. Apple wird aufgrund der Konkurrenzsituation kaum darum herumkommen, in der nächsten Generation des iPad mini ein Retina Display zu verbauen.

Runde Sache: Libratone Loop (Hands-On)

Vor knapp einem Jahr haben wir hier an dieser Stelle den Zipp von Libratone vorgestellt, jetzt legt das dänische Unternehmen nach. Ab heute erhältlich: Libratone Loop. 499 Euro kostet der neue Lautsprecher und ist in den Apple Stores, bei Apple online und bei weiteren ausgesuchten Händlern zu haben. Die Standardfarben: grau, schwarz und grau. Wollhüllen in gelb, blau und pink gibt es extra zu kaufen.

Vevo in Deutschland gestartet, raus aus der Musikvideo Einöde
Für die vielen, die jedes Mal beim Versuch ein Musikvideo zu sehen, einen Anfall bekommen, weil schon wieder nichts zu sehen ist ausser einem Hinweis auf mangelnde Rechte, jetzt die gute Nachricht. Vevo, die Kollaboration von Universal und Sony mit Partnern aus Abu Dhabi und seit neustem auch Shareholder YouTube, geht ab heute mit Segen der GEMA in Deutschland an den Start und dürfte nicht mehr allzu viele Wünsche offen lassen. Extreme Reality SDK bringt Kinect-artige Features für iOS, Windows RT und Windows 7

Extreme Reality haben jetzt ihr Extreme Reality SDK für alle Entwickler freigegeben, das Kinect-Features auf iPad und iPhone sowie Windows RT, Windows 7 und Windows 8-Devices bringen soll. Hardwareseitig wird dazu ausschließlich die integrierte Kamera benutzt, mit der Bewegungen des ganzen Körpers erfasst werden und als NUI fungieren können. Wie gut das funktioniert bleibt abzuwarten, aber laut Extreme Reality haben es bereits unter anderem SEGA für ihr Tanz-Game GO DANCE für iOS und andere Firmen für diverse Windows 8-Games eingesetzt.

GoPro bringt die Hero3+: kleiner, leichter, schärfer und schneller (Video)

Nokia will Handys mit Blitzen laden, im Labor klappt das auch schon irgendwie (Video)

iOS 7: Apple verspricht Fix für iMessage-Probleme
Derzeit häufen sich die Berichte, dass es nach dem Update auf iOS7 zu Problemen beim Versand und Empfang von iMessage komme. Jetzt hat Apple The Wall Street Journal gegenüber eingestanden, dass iMessage bei "einem Bruchteil eines Prozents" seiner Nutzer nicht reibungslos funktioniert und Abhilfe in einem zukünftigen Software-Update versprochen. TechCrunch verweist zudem auf dieses Apple-Support-Dokument: Manchmal hilft es wohl (zumindest vorübergehend), iMessage zu deaktivieren und die Netzwerkeinstellungen zurückzusetzen.

Deutsche Telekom warnt: Gefälschte Rechnungen verbreiten Schadsoftware

Die Deutsche Telekom hat gestern einen aktuellen Sicherheitshinweis veröffentlicht. Wie es dort heißt, versuchen Online-Kriminelle derzeit erneut über den Versand gefälschter Telekom-Rechnungen Schadsoftware zu verbreiten. Im Unterschied zur echten Mail fehlt im Betreff der Fälschung die individuelle Buchungskontonummer, und es befindet sich ein Punkt hinter dem ersten Teil vor dem @ der Absender-Adresse "rechnungonline.@telekom.de". Rückkauf von Dell durch Firmengründer ist genehmigt

Die letzte Hürde ist genommen, die Behörden haben dem Rückkauf der Firma Dell durch den Firmengründer Michael Dell und die Beteiligungsgesellschaft Silver Lake zugestimmt. Wenn alles nach Plan läuft, wird der 25 Milliarden schwere Deal somit bis Ende Oktober abgeschlossen sein, und Dell wird von der Börse verschwinden. In Zukunft will Michael Dell sein Unternehmen stärker auf das Service- und Software-Geschäft ausrichten, aber nach wie vor auch PCs und Tablets anbieten.

Apfelkind: Apple zieht den Markenschwanz vor Bonner Kindercafé ein

Patentprobleme mit Nokia: HTC muss Chip in HTC One ändern

Als ob HTC noch nicht genug Probleme hätte: jetzt müssen sie das Hardware-Design des One ändern, damit diverse Patente von Nokia nicht verletzt werden. Laut dem Wall Street Journal arbeitet HTC momentan mit Qualcomm daran, eine andere Methode zu finden die Empfangs- und Sendeleistung in ihrem Funkmodul zu verbessern, nachdem Nokia vor einer Woche in den USA eine Patentklage durchgebracht hatte. Apple: Push für E-Mails in Deutschland funktioniert wieder

Wie Foss Patents berichtete und Apple mittlerweile auch bestätigt hat, funktioniert die Push-Funktion für Email in Deutschland wieder. Vor mehr als eineinhalb Jahren wurde Apple von Motorola Mobility in einem Patentstreit gezwungen, die Push-Email-Zustellung für iCloud, Yahoo!, AOL, QQ und NetEase innerhalb Deutschlands zu deaktivieren. Hier geht es zur Aktivierungs-Anleitung auf Apples Support-Seite, zurzeit allerdings nur auf Englisch, aber das dürfte sich bestimmt bald ändern.

CEATEC: Mondschwerkraftsimulator für Möchtegernastronauten (Video)
An der japanischen Technikmesse CEATEC werden ganze Hallen von Firmen in Beschlag genommen, die keiner kennt. So ging es jedenfalls unseren US-Kollegen, und eine davon hieß TE Connectivity. Eine ziemlich große Unbekannte, die Telekommunikationssysteme, Netzwerktechnik und vieles mehr anbietet, unter anderem auch für Luft- und Raumfahrt, wie uns Wikipedia verrät. 7-Eleven und Foxconn verkaufen Tablets im Spätkauf
Klingt nach einer eigenartigen Allianz: Hon Hai Precision Industry, besser bekannt als die Mutterfirma von Foxconn, hat sich mit 7-Eleven zusammengetan, um Tablets in deren Läden in Taiwan zu verkaufen. Im Angebot ist ein 7-Zoll Tablet, das sich bereits vorbestellen lässt. Die beiden Firmen erhoffen sich in den ersten drei Monaten 3000 verkaufte Tablets, schliesslich ist es nicht der erste gemeinsame Deal: im Juni gab es das Ganze schonmal mit Fernsehern mit dem 7-Eleven-Logo, von denen seitdem immerhin 15.000 Stück über den Ladentisch gingen. Android-Hersteller manipulieren Benchmarks
Die Resultate von Smartphone-Benchmarks sind insbesondere bei Android-Geräten mit grosser Vorsicht zu lesen, wie eine neue Studie von AnandTech aufzeigt. Mit der Ausnahme von Apple und Motorola hat jeder Hersteller ein Gerät im Angebot, welches den Benchmark manipulieren kann. Gemäss Anand Lal Shimpi wurde mit dieser Testreihe der Beweis erbracht, dass Manipulationen wie im Vorfeld vermutet nicht nur auf Samsung-Geräte beschränkt sind, sondern ein generelles Problem bei Android-Geräten darstellen. Mit Ausnahme des Nexus 7, des Nexus 4 und der älteren Motorola-Geräte waren alle Android-Geräte mit Massnahmen ausgestattet, um einen Test manipulieren zu können.

Schlappe für Motorola: iClouds Push-E-Mail funktioniert in Deutschland wieder
Nachdem Apple im Jahr 2012 in Deutschland die Push-Funktion für den iCloud-Maildienst deaktivieren musste, funktioniert dieser Service seit dem ersten Oktober wieder flächendeckend. Bereits Mitte September berichteten einige Nutzer, dass sich die Funktion wieder aktivieren liess.
Dank der Push-Funktion müssen Nutzer aus Deutschland nicht immer die Mail-App öffnen, damit die neuen iCloud-Nachrichten angezeigt werden. Die E-Mails treffen neu wieder sofort auf dem Gerät ein.
Apple musste die Push-Benachrichtigungen aufgrund eines Rechtsstreits mit Motorola deaktivieren.

Tap a film poster and you'll either get a link to the Internet Movie Database, or you'll get to the iTunes Store where you can check out a preview or buy the movie.
The database goes all the way back to 1915, where you'll find Birth of A Nation, and yes, you can get that from iTunes.
