Google Search app gets expanded voice features
Not content to let Siri be the only big name in voice assisted search on iOS, the Google Search app has been updated with voice recognition features that bring it almost in line with Apple's own offering. The new search feature lets you verbally request information like weather reports, sports scores, and even driving directions -- using Google Maps, of course. The info you request is then spoken back to you automatically.

Disney übernimmt Lucasfilm und LucasArts

Hurricane Sandy propels emergency apps to top of App Store
It's difficult to determine just how useful your iPhone could be in an emergency situation until that circumstance descends upon you. In the last 48 hours, millions of people living along the East Coast have looked to their smartphones for a bit of assistance and nowhere is this more apparent than on the App Store. Apple: iTunes 11 needs 'extra time,' release delayed
Obscured somewhat by news of the hurricane and flooding and its own staff reorganization, Apple has revealed that it is delaying the update of iTunes until some time in November. The previous release schedule was announced during the iPhone 5 announcement in September, and was reportedly to be delivered by the end of October.

Targus buys premium accessory maker Sena Cases
Prolific accessory maker Targus is no slouch when it comes to making attractive products, but when it came to upping its game in the realm of high-end iPhone and iPad cases it opted to acquire an established brand rather than start from scratch. That name is Sena Cases, a California firm known for its exquisitely crafted leather accessories.
Founded in 199 by brothers Ramsey and Fevzi Oten, Sena Cases specializes in high-end phone and tablet cases, some of which carry the imprint of designers such as Michael Kors and Dylan George. The company will continue to operate as a separate entity under the ownership of Targus with the Otens remaining at its helm. ARM unveils 64-bit Cortex-A50 mobile processors
ARM today announced a new processor series based on the ARMv8 architecture, the Cortex-A50. The new series will initially include the Cortex-A53 and Cortex-A57 processors, and it will bring to bear energy-efficient technologies enabling 64-bit processing in mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. ARM says the new designs should enable performance up to three times that seen in today's "superphones" while consuming a comparable level of power.

Disney acquires Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion, plans more Star Wars movies
Disney is already one of the biggest media companies around, and it's now set to become even bigger. The company announced late today that it's acquiring Lucasfilm Ltd., currently 100 percent owned by founder George Lucas, for $4.05 billion in a cash and stock deal. That of course includes the rights to both the Star Wars and Indiana Jones film franchises, as well as Lucasfilm properties like Industrial Light & Magic and Skywalker Sound. Apple has confirmed to Cnet that the launch of iTunes 11 will be delayed just a bit. According to Apple spokesperson Tom Neumayr:

iTunes refresh delayed till 'end of November'
We were all a little shocked when Apple failed to deliver a redesigned iTunes at its last keynote. The company promised a major revamp of the service would land in October yet, here we are with one day left in the month, and no iTunes overhaul in sight. When using Linux, or just about any open source operating system out there for that matter, there's a proverbial Santa's knapsack of graphical user interfaces (GUIs) available. When you boil this topic down on the basic level, you've got two choices: Use a fully featured Desktop Environment (DE) with tons of bells and whistles, or alternatively you can use a slimmed-down and streamlined Window Manager (WM). TiVo Premiere fall update starts rolling out with more HD menu screens and a few other tweaks
We got an early peek at some of the newly revamped menus from TiVo's fall update a few days ago, and now the company has announced it is officially rolling out to retail Premiere DVRs, with cable-provided boxes getting the update at some point in the future. Those on the priority list are first up so some TiVo Community posters report they've already received it and can confirm the Netflix app is "still terrible." Besides the upgraded screens for Season Pass Manager, To Do List, History and My Shows (beyond the new look, they each have gained a few new features), Parental controls has replaced KidZone setting

Google Search, Apple Cards apps for iOS get updates
Google has released a new version of its free Search app for iOS, v2.5. The software has been updated for the iPhone 5, but also introduces an overhauled Voice Search function. Voice recognition is said to be faster and generally improved, moreover streaming text as a person speaks. For some queries the app will give a vocal reply instead of just visual results.

Initial stock of fourth-generation iPads now at 1 week for all models
Days after exhausting the initial supplies of the iPad mini, the online Apple Store is showing that all models of the WiFi fourth-generation iPad have a one-week shipping time. If you were hoping to have your hands on one this Friday, you'll have to wait in line at an Apple Store for it.
Cellular-capable versions of the fourth-generation iPad and iPad mini are still on schedule to be released in mid-November.

If this latest report from Primate Labs is accurate, then customers who snag a fourth-generation iPad on Friday will be pleased with the device's performance. According to a Geekbench result that appeared on Sunday, Apple's latest tablet outperforms all other recent iOS devices, including the iPhone 5.

Mark Cuban on the Apple TV's possible future
HDNet founder and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban has an opinion about just about everything, so it's not surprising that he talked to Adweek about Apple's "hobby" product -- the Apple TV.

Fachkräfte-Bedarf in der IT-Branche steigt

Paper Climb (US$0.99) offers a challenging wall-climbing game with really great style. You scale a virtual wall of paper while avoiding obstacles like falling stones (wadded-up paper -- everything follows the "made of paper" motif here), angry eagles and blowing wind.
The design is terrific. A lot of work has gone into presenting a delightful, visually-clever interface. I love how the developers worked so hard at building a fully realized visual metaphor.
The game play is fun too. You have to think fast, because just like real-world rock-climbing, you have to strategize on how to keep moving up that wall.

Apple wins patent on iOS Maps interface
Apple has won a patent on the interface for the Maps app in iOS, notes AppleInsider. The patent is officially titled Touch screen device, method, and graphical user interface for providing maps, directions, and location-based information, and was originally applied for about a month before the iPhone 3G launched in July 2008. Maps debuted on the 3G as a part of iPhone OS 2.0.

Palo Alto Apple Store opens, Shenzhen store nearly ready
Apple continues to expand its retail presence both here in the US and in China. As noted by MacNN, Apple's impressive Palo Alto, California store opened this past weekend. The spacious 15,000 square foot store features an arched-glass roof and is estimated to have cost over US$3 million to build. It's located at 340 University Avenue, a thoroughfare which is lined by retail stores, coffee houses and outdoor restaurants.

Auf der Robot World 2012 in Korea hat das Center for Intelligent Robotics (CIR) des Korean Institute of Science and Technology (KIST) seinen Roboterstand der Dinge im Haushalt gezeigt: der Blechkamerad namens CIROS kann inzwischen schon fast einen Salat zubereiten, auch wenn der Bot beim Gurke schnippeln und Dressing drüberkippen noch elendig langsam agiert. Dafür kann der 160 Zentimeter große 150-Kilo-Roboter nach der Salatzubereitung sprachgesteuert zum Einräumen der Spülmaschine gescheucht werden, wobei er Hindernissen geschmeidig ausweichen sollte. When the first wave of news was breaking about Apple and its executive shuffle, the initial focus was on Scott Forstall leaving even though that's not actually happening until 2013.
According to the Wall Street Journal, both Forstall and John Browett, Apple's vice president of retail, were asked to leave with Browlett's departure an immediate one. Perhaps the reason this didn't get more initial attention is because it was hardly surprising.

Intel is now shipping its first SSDs based on its new 20nm NAND Flash memory fabrication process. After a year of living in beta, Chrome Remote Desktop is finally ready for primetime. Similar to other screen sharing services like LogMeIn and Splashtop, Chrome Remote Desktop lets you access other computers remotely. Mapping Scott Forstall's departure from Apple
When Apple announced earlier today that -- along with several executive leadership changes -- Senior Vice President of iOS Software Scott Forstall would be leaving the company in 2013, theories began to fly from every corner of the web. (Some on our team began to suspect changes afoot when Forstall didn't have any onstage presence at last week's iPad mini event, though he did appear in the audience -- seated near former Apple software exec Bertrand Serlet.)

Apple: iOS head Forstall, Retail chief Browett to depart
In a surprise announcement on Monday, Apple has confirmed that SVP of iOS Scott Forstall and SVP of Retail John Browett are leaving the company. Craig Federighi will take over heading up both iOS and OS X, though Forstall will stay on with the company into next year as an advisor. Apple CEO Tim Cook will run the retail side of Apple until a replacement for Browett, who started the job just nine months ago, is found. Other executives such as Sir Jonathan Ive, Eddy Cue and Bob Mansfield will take on additional responsibilities.

Jobs family christens yacht 'Venus' in The Netherlands
An endeavour to design a world-class yacht for his family to use, one of the later projects of former Apple CEO Steve Jobs' life, has finally been completed after years of work and was christened by the Jobs family as "Venus" in a ceremony in Aalsmeer in The Netherlands. Various Dutch Mac sites have posted pictures and video of the ship (seen below), which uses seven 27-inch iMacs in the wheelhouse. It features a 260-foot long aluminum hull with a elegant, minimalist approach and lots of glass windows on the topside.

AUO builds cellphone display with 'world's thinnest border'

Lenovo, Asus top Rescuecom report, Apple fourth
Rescuecom has published its new computer reliability ratings for the third quarter of 2012, and Lenovo has returned to the top spot among manufacturers. The report, based on data collected from the market shares of PC manufacturers and computer support provided by manufacturers, found the Chinese company's products to be the most reliable, followed by Asus, Samsung, Apple, and Toshiba. For the first quarter of 2012, Lenovo topped the ratings but lost the position to Samsung in the second quarter.

Pandora updated for iOS, Android, coming to Windows
Pandora has announced an update to its app for both iOS and Android smartphones. The new update, which brings the app to version 4.0, is hailed by Pandora as the biggest redesign since its launch on the two major platforms.
