Alibaba to launch English version of Aliyun OS this month, tablet by November
Alibaba is just beginning its long and arduous journey into the field of mobile domination, but it's already looking to expand its sphere of influence beyond China to tackle the OS giants. Merely a few weeks after announcing its Aliyun OS, the company has spilled the beans on its plans for the immediate future, which include launching an English version of the platform this month and pushing a tablet to the market within the next two. Details on pricing, release time frame and partnerships are scarce -- the K-Touch W700 wasn't specifically mentioned, either -- but Alibaba confirmed it's currently in talks with global hardware vendors.

Dexim adds iOS-steered AppSpeed Monster Truck
Dexim has announced AppSpeed, a motion-control iOS app for the company's new radio-controlled vehicles (free, iTunes App Store). The first vehicle to hit the streets will be a monster truck. With an iOS device in hand, the truckís movement and speed can be controlled for distances up to 50 feet.

Conan O'Brien skewers Apple over missing iPhone 5
Conan O'Brien's late night show on Thursday made light of Apple losing a prototype iPhone 5 in a short sketch (below). Although the routine incorrectly flags the phone has having been lost week -- it was lost in July -- it imagines Apple being as eager for retribution as stereotypes portray it to be. Imitating Apple's promo videos much like the Final Cut Pro X spoof, each suggests a particularly vicious form of punishment, such as flesh-eating ants or "digital Ebola."

iTunes 10.5 beta 8 and iWork for iOS beta 3 available to developers
Apple has provided an eighth beta seed of iTunes 10.5 and a third beta of iWork for iOS to developers. This is the first time in the development cycle for iTunes 10.5 that a new beta for the music player hasn't simultaneously come alongside a new iOS beta; iOS 5 is still in its seventh beta as of this writing.

Droplets, Inc sues Apple over iTunes, movie trailer site
The lawsuits from and to Apple keep flying around, and today is no exception. Texas based Droplets Inc., is suing Apple for patent violations in the Apple website, iTunes, and the Apple movie trailers page.
The suit, according to the Patently Apple website contends that the Droplets patent covers delivering interactive clickable links using object oriented methods. The patent was granted in 2000.
Droplets is also suing Google, Facebook and Yahoo. The suit was filed in Texas Eastern District Court, generally considered to be a

Adobe unveils new software tools, adds iOS-compatible streaming video option
At the International Broadcasters Convention (IBC) in Amsterdam yesterday, Adobe unveiled a slew of new software solutions, including Adobe Pass, Flash Access 3.0 and Flash Media Server 4.5. Pass allows cable operators and other content providers to provide streaming TV from multiple sources through a single sign-on solution, while Access is content protection platform that can now deliver streaming video to mobile devices. Monsoon's next-gen Vulkano media hub shows at FCC
Monsoon will soon release its third-generation Vulkano media hub range, as indicated by an FCC filing. Switching the design to a square rather than a rounded rectangle, the new models will carry on with the Flow, Lava and Blast names. All will continue to have the ability to stream any TV channel to mobile devices such as iOS, Android and BlackBerry devices as well as Macs and Windows PCs.

Sprint blacks out first half of October for iPhone 5 launch
An internal memo to Sprint staff has provided a virtual giveaway of the carrier's plans to carry the iPhone 5. The note issues a blackout on employee vacations between September 30 and October 15 for a "major phone launch." While a small chance exists that the SprintFeed leak is a reference to something else, the corroboration of rumors and silences on both the name and release date make the iPhone 5 the near-certain subject of the memo.

NVIDIA GPUDirect bolsters live TV special effects
At the currently ongoing International Broadcasting Convention in Amsterdam, NVIDIA showed off its new GPUDirect for Video technology that will let app developers create more realistic on-air graphics. It allows industry-standard video I/O devices to communicate directly with the company's pro-oriented Quadro and Tesla GPUs with very low lag. The solution, as NVIDIA sees it, will not only speed up real-time processing of video streams in broadcast and production work but also in manufacturing, healthcare and government agencies.

Apple posts iTunes 10.5 beta 8 and iWork for iOS beta 3
Apple signaled that it was closing in on the release of its iCloud-related efforts on Friday with new developer betas of iTunes and iWork for iOS. iTunes 10.5 beta 8 focuses on "several performance enhancements and bug fixes" but is considered necessary to keep using iTunes Match during its beta phase. As before, testers still have to pay $25 per year like the public but get extra months of service in return for the testing.

News: Apple releases iTunes 10.5 beta 8 to developers
Apple has uncharacteristically released a small update to its beta version of iTunes 10.5 for registered iOS developers. According to release notes provided to iLounge by an anonymous source, the update focuses mainly on Apple’s iTunes Match service, which remains closed for new developer sign-ups. iTunes 10.5 beta 8, as well as iWork for iOS beta 3, are available for download now from the iOS Dev Center.

AOL, Yahoo said in merger talks as Yahoo hires banks
AOL and Yahoo are considering merging in the wake of Carol Bartz' ouster from Yahoo's CEO spot, according to leaks. AOL chief Tim Armstrong purportedly believes uniting the two would strengthen them and was in talks with Yahoo advisors. He may have wanted a deal as early as last year, Bloomberg's Emily Chang said, but was shot down as long as Bartz was in the lead.

Apple removes shipping times for many online items
Apple's online storefront includes shipping times that give prospective customers an idea of how long they'll have to wait before an item arrives on their front door. Many Apple products no longer have an estimated ship date and are labeled as being "In Stock". The only products with a ship date are those with limited availability.
In the past, these shipping dates were used to estimate product inventory and guess when new products may be released. Earlier this week, savvy customers noticed the ship dates for the iPhone 4 slipped from 24 hours to 1-3 days. This kicked off a round of speculation that Apple was clearing inventory of the iPhone 4 before the launch of the iPhone 5.

Pioneer outs two Music Tap bookshelf systems with AirPlay
Pioneer has unveiled two upcoming bookshelf audio systems that work with Apple's AirPlay media sharing. The X-SMC3-S Music Tap and the X-SMC4-Elite Music Tap share a Wi-Fi connection and Ethernet port. The former, other than getting Pioneer's more exclusive Elite treatment, also adds Bluetooth.

Bose BT2 Bluetooth headset cruises through the FCC, unsurprisingly mum on specifications
We're surmising that Bose has at least one other thing on the docket for its September 15th press event, but for those who still think Bluetooth headsets are must-have accessories well, this guy ought to be hitting store shelves soon. The BT2 just passed through the FCC's database, showcasing a left ear placement and letting us know that it'll be "powered by a rechargeable, non-replaceable lithium-ion polymer battery." We're guessing it'll be priced accordingly (read: incomprehensibly out of reach for most), and will have precisely zero specifications printed on the box. But hey -- would you really expect anything else? Stay tuned.

Security Update 2011-005 fixes DigiNotar vulnerability
Apple has posted Security Update 2011-005, a new patch for OS X Lion and Snow Leopard. In each case the code is aimed at fixing just a single problem: fraudulent certificates issued by DigiNotar, a threat Microsoft dealt with on Wednesday. Apple notes that it has removed DigiNotar from the listed of trusted root and extended validation certificates. By default, OS X should now distrust any certificate connected to DigiNotar.

Fring adds Google+ Hangout-style Playgrounds for video chat
Mobile communication service provider fring has has added Playgrounds, a new social networking component, to its mobile and group video chat app (free, iPhone, Android). Fring users can now browse through a list of open video discussions, which the company calls Playgrounds, and then participate if the subject matter is of interest. Adobe's Flash Media Server 4.5 will stream video to iOS devices
At the IBC trade show in Amsterdam today, Adobe announced version 4.5 of its Flash Media Server and Flash Access 3.0. The $4,500 media server will stream video to Flash-enabled devices, and also to Flash-less iOS devices like the iPhone and iPad. Samsung, Intel rule out change of hands for MeeGo
Samsung spokesman James Chung in a statement Friday ruled out the prospects of buying MeeGo. The representative didn't acknowledge that Samsung might just take control, but he argued that a financial deal was impossible. As open-source work, it "cannot be a target of acquisition," he told CNET.

Sprint shows international mobile hotspot from ZTE
Sprint has quietly introduced a global hotspot, officially called the Sprint International Mobile Hotspot by ZTE. It allows users to connect up to five Wi-Fi devices at the same time to share its EVDO data link when local and HSPA when abroad, though in the latter case only with one device at a time. Lowe's to equip workers with 42,000 iPhones
Home improvement chain Lowe's is in the process of equipping its workers with 42,000 iPhone 4s, according to Bloomberg. In initial use the devices will simply handle tasks like scanning, checking product information, viewing how-to videos or connecting to lowes.com. Google Music beta ready for iOS
Google Music beta lets you upload your music library to Google's servers and stream the content to web-connected devices like your computer or Android handset, but not iOS. Several months after launch, the service now supports iOS via a web app optimized for the iPhone, iPod touch and the iPad.

Lenovo plans to topple Dell for No. 2, takes shot at HP
Lenovo chairman Liu Chuanzhi in comments bragged of his company's position in the PC space and expected to take the second place spot away from Dell this year. Lenovo's current pace was quick enough that it would happen in the last few months of the year. CEO Yuanqing Yang pointed to an existing quick pace but also took a dig at HP's possible exit from PCs, suggesting that it wasn't an iPad effect but weak will and poor performance at HP that was leading it to wither in the face of smartphones and the iPad.

The #3 wireless carrier in the US could use this plan to lure customers from competitors AT&T and Verizon Wireless. These two competing carriers already sell the iPhone with tiered data plans. If this rumor pans out, it'll leave T-Mobile as the one remaining US carrier without the iPhone. The absence of the iPhone on T-Mobile may not really matter as AT&T is in the process of buying the #4 wireless carrier.

ZTE Sprint International Mobile Hotspot does CDMA in US, GSM abroad
We love mobile wireless hotspots, and we especially love when they work internationally -- which until today, has left Sprint's CDMA/WiMAX devices out of the mix. This latest variant gives some love to the world traveling crowd, however, with domestic support for EVDO Rev A, and international support for GSM/GRPS/EDGE as well as WCDMA/HSDPA/HSUPA. New London Apple store to get unusual Tuesday opening
Apple is doing an unusual Tuesday opening for its latest store in London, England, a report notes. The Stratford City outlet will open in the The Arcade, Westfield Stratford City at 10AM local time on September 13th. Apple launches almost all of its stores on Saturdays, making it easier for more people to visit. The Stratford City location will be Apple's fifth in London proper, not including surrounding areas.

Sprint's iPhone 5 will see the carrier keep the unlimited data it's known for when it ships next month, leaks hinted Friday. Analyst: RIM 'superphone' being rushed, BlackBerry 7 'okay'
RIM's self-proclaimed "superphone" based on its new QNX platform, unofficially known as the BlackBerry Colt, might be pushed too quickly into the market. Based on "checks," Jefferies & Co. analyst Peter Misek believed on Friday that the Colt was "being rushed' with no BlackBerry Enterprise Server or possibly BlackBerry Internet Service support. Apple adds iPad purchasing wizard to online store
Earlier we reported that the Apple Store was down in the U.S. and the U.K (at least). A few hours later, the store came back online. At first, we didn't notice any changes, but in fact, Apple has introduced an iPad purchasing wizard.
The wizard breaks down the process of choosing the spec of the iPad you'd like to buy into three very simple steps. First, choose the color of your iPad. Second, choose how much storage you'd like your iPad to have and finally, select either a Wi-Fi or a Wi-Fi plus 3G model. Apple wins permanent ban on Samsung tablet in Germany
Samsung was dealt a major setback today in Germany. A district court in Dusseldorf ruled that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 is too similar to the iPad 2 and banned the sales of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in the European country. The court also prevents Samsung Germany from selling the tablet device in the EU, though other Samsung divisions can sell in those countries.
Samsung confirmed it will appeal the decision and said via a spokesperson "We are disappointed with this ruling and believe it severely limits consumer choice in Germany." Samsung still faces a similar case in Japan and the US. Undeterred by the ruling, Samsung and carrier NTT DoCoMo still plan to launch the launch tablet device next month.

Apple tops J.D. Power customer satisfaction survey, grim reading for RIM and Nokia
Not only is Apple shipping the most smartphones, it's also shipping the best smartphones -- if you believe the stats in J.D. Power and Associates' latest US customer satisfaction survey. It gave the iPhone a score of 838, versus HTC's handsets in second place with 801 and an industry average of 788. Sammy got a disappointing 777, but we guess it might have fared better if the Galaxy S II had been quicker to cross the Atlantic

An der Penn State University hat man die ersten spinnenartigen Maschinchen entwickelt, die durch Venen krabbeln und Medikamente verteilen können. Steuern lassen sich die Dinge aus Gold und Silizium über einen sogenannten Grubbs Katalysator durch diverse Chemikalien. LG Display solves iPad 2 display issues, hits 4m a month
LG Display has reportedly solved the chronic iPad 2 backlight bleeding that was affecting its ability to produce LCDs for Apple. It successfully ramped production back up to four million displays a month in August from 2.6 million at most in July. Apples Spaceship-Campus in Cupertino und Neubaupläne für 2015
Apples zukünftiger Campus in Cupertino wird nicht der einzige Neubau sein: Laut Berichten soll bereits ein zweiter Neubau im Gespräch sein, dessen Bau 2015 starten könnte.

Apple wins upheld ban on Samsung Galaxy Tabs in Germany
Apple on Friday won a ruling that upheld a preliminary German ban on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and beyond in Germany. The Dusseldorf court restriction prevents Samsung's German division from selling not just the one Android tablet but future models like the Galaxy Tab 7.7 until the end of the full trial, which is expected to wrap only within about one year. Samsung can appeal quickly in Higher Regional Court but could face another several weeks without sales.

One Euro Car? So billig? Nein. Die Idee ist, es wird nur 1 Euro Energie für 100 Kilometer verbrauchen. Das Elektroauto wird auf der IAA in Frankfurt nächste Woche präsentiert und soll bis 120 Stundenkilometer schaffen. Der Zweisitzer setzt dabei vor allem auf ein Gewicht das ca. einem Drittel eines normalen Kleinwagens entspricht. Mit mehr Spezifikationen wollte Opel aber vor der Messe noch nicht rausrücken. Da Bootzeiten für viele Nutzer eine große Rolle spielen, will Microsoft den Startvorgang beim kommenden Windows 8 gegenüber dem Vorgänger deutlich beschleunigen. LG liefert wieder mehr iPad-Displays an Apple
Noch vor einem Monat hieß es aus Industrie-Quellen, dass LG aufgrund von Qualitätsproblemen deutlich weniger iPad-Displays an Apple liefern konnte, als ursprünglich vereinbart war. So musste Apple verstärkt auf Samsung und CMI als Zulieferer für die Display-Panels zurückgreifen. Gerade mit Samsung aber führt Apple bekanntlich seit einigen Monaten auch einen erbitterten Rechtsstreit, weswegen sich dies nur als kurzfristige Lösung eignete.

Three ways to change Lion's Finder window sidebar
It took me a little while, but I finally last weekend updated to Lion, and so far I think I like it. I kind of miss my old Spaces feature, and I did turn off reverse scrolling right away, but it does seem to run better than Snow Leopard, and Mission Control is pretty sweet. Another thing I'm not a huge fan of, however, is the new Finder sidebar -- it's pretty bland, and not quite as clear or useful as the one in Snow Leopard.
Fortunately, that's pretty easy to fix, and ZDnet has a few good ways to do it. This SIMBL plugin will put a little color back in those icons, if you like, and you can do

Dell jams a terabyte of SATA3 SSD storage into Precision M6600 laptop
Dell is tweaking some of the options offered on its Precision M6600 and M4600 mobile workstations. You can now choose to add 512GB SATA3 SSD drives and (in the case of the M6600) a 4GB NVIDIA Quadro 5010M card. Keine Frage, das Patent von Apple auf ein iPhone als Barcode-Leser im so genannten Point-Of-Sale System macht für alle Sinn. Gerade eben noch kam die Meldung rein, dass Lowe (in den USA die scharfe Konkurrenz des hierzulande bekannteren Home Depot, ein Baumarkt also) 42.000 iPhones an ihre Verkäufer austeilt für eben diesen Zweck.

Düsseldorfer Landgericht bestätigt einstweiliges Verkaufsverbot des Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1
Nachdem das Düsseldorfer Landgericht vor einem Monat eine einstweilige Verfügung gegen den Import des Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Deutschland verhängt hatte, wurde dies nun in einer Nachverhandlung vom Gericht bestätigt und aufrecht gehalten. Apple has released updated drivers from Lexmark that cover all supported models under Snow Leopard and Lion, including all-in-one (AIO) models and scanner drivers. The company has only added support for one series -- the 6500e and 6500e Fax units -- but brings most updated drivers to version 10.6.4 or 10.7.0, the latter of which indicates support for Lion. Ah yes, our old friend -- the Post-it of Unavailability. The Apple Store is down in the US, UK, Australia and presumably elsewhere as well.
Could be maintenance, could be something else (although it seems awfully early for the rumored Mac Pro refresh). We'll know in a few hours, give or take.

Facebook recruits HTML5 app store man in hint of iOS plans
Facebook's plan to make an iOS-oriented platform for HTML5 web apps, Project Spartan, may have been given a lift after new word that it has hired to boost its efforts. Teck Chia, the founder of HTML5 mobile app store OpenAppMkt, has reportedly been hired. Purposes of the hire were unknown, although TechCrunch noted that Chia had previously worked on Facebook apps and would be an ideal fit to help manage Facebook apps converted to HTML5.

Apple takes top spot in J.D. Power smartphone ratings five years in a row
For the fifth year in a row, Apple's iPhone has taken top spot on the J.D. Power and Associates Smartphone Satisfaction Study. "Apple ranks highest among manufacturers of smartphones in customer satisfaction with a score of 795 and performs particularly well in ease of operation, operating system, features and physical design. Motorola (763) and HTC (762) follow Apple in the smartphone rankings," according to the study.
J.D. Power's study found that smartphone users cited different "key factors" for satisfaction:

Google acquires Zagat: good news for foodies, bad news for Yelp?
Long before Yelp, there was Zagat -- a point-based restaurant rating guide, compiled from the best (or worst, depending) crowdsourced reviews. Bose 'Chihuahua' could take on AirPlay or Sonos
A combination of an event invite and a leak has given a clue as to Bose plans for a new wireless audio system. Called the "Chihuahua" so far, it would be an "ultra small" MP3 player speaker docking station. Best Buy details scraped by This is my next would have it sit in a display next week meant to show the Bose SoundLink wireless system, hinting that the dock or an adapter could push audio out to Bose hardware much like Sonos or possibly AirPlay.

Opel shows off all-electric One Euro Car concept
It's saving most of the details for the Frankfurt Motor Show next week, but GM subsidiary Opel has now offered up the first glimpse of its all-electric One Euro Car, which seems bound to turn a few heads on the show floor. The car's name comes from the company's promise that the it will consume just one Euro's worth of energy (or about $1.40) for every 100 kilometers, though there's no indication of a price for the car itself other than that it'd be "affordable" -- if it ever goes into production, that is. Otherwise, the company's only saying that it will boast a top speed of 120 kilometers (or 75 miles) per hour, room for two, and a total weight about a third that of a modern compact car.

Iridium to introduce iOS satellite access point later this year
If you've found that Wi-Fi, 3G, EDGE, and GPRS don't provide sufficient coverage to siphon the internet into your iOS device, you're in luck. According to Network World, Iridium is introducing new access point gear that will enable satellite-based internet access on your iPhone or iPad from pretty much anywhere on Earth.
"The two new devices enable use of data applications on mobile smartphones and tablets that have Wi-Fi capabilities," Network World says, "and the access point bridges the connection over the Iridium satellite network." While Iridium says the service should be sufficient for email and internet access, the sub-dialup 26-27 Kbps speed means accessing anything but the most basic internet service

Radio Shack to finally offer iPhone 4 on September 15?
Radio Shack may be set to sell iPhones through Verizon beginning next week, however the retailer appears to be set to distribute the iPhone 4 rather than the next-generation model. A leaked screenshot from Radio Shack's inventory system, which was posted by 9to5Mac, suggests the company will begin offering the 16GB and 32GB variants on September 15.

Sony brings new media streaming box and updated Google TV hardware to CEDIA

AVG Windows Phone app caught tracking locations, little else
Mobile antivirus apps and Microsoft's policies were called into question after former Microsoft worker Justin Angel disputed AVG's new Mobilation for Windows Phone 7. He found in a code breakdown that it was not only tracking the phone's location over GPS with the GeoCoordinateWatcher, against Microsoft's guidelines, but sending device IDs and the e-mail address. Little else was being accomplished, ChevronWP7 creator Rafael Rivera added: it so far only looked for EICAR code strings and a Hebrew word.

Senate passes bill that may curb patent trolling
The US Senate passed in an 89 to 9 vote a bill originally put through Congress that could theoretically curb patent troll lawsuits. It will let the USPTO get more control over its fees and reduce the instances of its budget being diverted somewhere else. The bi-partisan vote was made with the hope of recruiting more examiners and modernizing equipment, both to speed up the process and to prevent overly broad patents from slipping through and being used to sue for dubious reasons.

I am new to the Mac community, and there are some programs that are unsupported on the Mac and I know there are a few options to run Windows on a Mac. When I search online for the best options and answers to my questions (what is the best option, do I need a Windows license/disc, difference between emulators/virtual machines, Parallels vs Boot Camp vs VMware Fusion etc), most of the info is pretty old and outdated. JVC shows off projectors with 4K precision, but not quite 4K pixels
JVC first brought 4K home with its $175k DLA-RS4000 and now it's back with four new models with greater than HD resolution at much easier to swallow prices. You'll note the term used is "with 4K precision", because strictly speaking these don't project over 4,000 pixels of horizontal resolution, coming in at a still impressive 3,840 x 2,160 resolution. Samsung, Microsoft to show Windows 8 tablet at Build
The mystery quad-core Windows 8 tablet due to show at the Build event next week has been identified as a Samsung model and could signal Samsung's reduced dependency on Android. iTunes U exceeds 600 million downloads
The educational service of the iTunes Store, iTunes U, has seen over 600 million downloads so far, Apple has disclosed. Apple rarely discusses iTunes statistics, much less for iTunes U, which provides lectures and other podcast content from schools such as Harvard, MIT and Oxford. Surprisingly, even though iTunes U has been around since 2007, Apple says that over half of the 600 million downloads were made during the past year.

Google releases an official Blogger iPhone app
A few days after the entire service had a redesign, Blogger now has something users have been waiting for for a while: an official iPhone app. Google has released the Blogger app to the App Store, and it's now available for download. Google Music Beta hits iOS with optimized web app
Google's fledgling Music Beta service reached a non-Android mobile platform for the first time Thursday with a web app intended for iOS devices. Visitors can stream any music they've uploaded to the cloud system through Safari, without having to use a native app or Flash. The only known limitation is the expected inability to pin tracks to the device for offline use.

Got acne? There used to be an app for that
The iPhone is pretty special, but apparently its magic does not extend to curing blemishes.
The Federal Trade Commission has reached a settlement with the developers of AcneApp. The marketers of the app claimed that it "was developed by a dermatologist. A study published by the British Journal of Dermatology showed blue and red light treatments eliminated p-acne bacteria (a major cause of acne) and reduces [sic] skin blemishes by 76%." There were approximately 11,600 downloads of AcneApp from the iTunes store, where it sold for $1.99.

AOptix e-Gate could improve global airport security, replace ID checks with iris scans
You're certainly not alone if you think that the current airport security process is far from ideal.
