Apple Q4 financial call set for October 18

Apple has announced the date for its Q4 financial call. The call will take place on Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. PT. As usual, Apple will detail it's financial results for the quarter that ends this Friday, September 30th. Besides addressing this past quarter, the call should also feature plenty of questions from analysts about the number of iPhone 5 units sold on launch weekend (the iPhone 5 will presumably launch by that time) and other standard questions about Apple's pro

OS X updates to block Revir.A as new Mac Trojan appears

As has become standard, Apple has quietly updated OS X definitions to counter a recently-publicized malware threat, checks show. Lion and Snow Leopard will now block a Trojan fronted by OSX/Revir.A, which in turn installs a backdoor program identified as OSX/Imuler.A. Although neither part of the Trojan is especially dangerous at the moment, Imuler could potentially be used at a later date to capture screenshots or steal files.

Portfolio for iPad offers a plethora of options, and a steep learning curve

A few weeks ago, TUAW editor-in-chief Victor Agreda asked me if I had any recommendations for an iPad portfolio app. He had a friend who wanted to be able to save his portfolio on his iPad and passcode it so his kids couldn't access it. It's a good idea, and I've seen the iPad be used for wedding photography to comic portfolios. Yes, it's fairly easy to do a basic portfolio using the built-in Photos app on the iPad, and I've done that myself. Amazon has most publishers for Kindle Fire tablet

Amazon has three out of the major four US publishers onboard for its Kindle tablet launch this Wednesday, tipsters disclosed Monday alongside details of the tablet itself. Facebook iPad app developer quits over software's delay

The lead engineer for Facebook's still-unreleased iPad app ultimately quit the company over the delay, a blog post reveals. Jeff Verkoeyen writes that he helmed the project for about eight months, sometimes putting in as much as 80 hours per week to meet Facebook's schedule. Facebook iPad app has been 'feature complete' for months

TechCrunch has a long piece on the ongoing saga of the missing-in-action Facebook app for the iPad. Nielsen: Android adoption doubled iOS over last three months

BGR reports this morning that Android phones are growing rapidly in market share in the US. That's the word from the Nielsen Company, which just released research conducted in August. Customer surveys showed that over the last 3 months, ending in August, twice as many people purchased an Android-based phone as bought an iPhone. The percentages are 58% for Android, 28% for Apple. T-Mobile: 90 percent of our smartphone owners use Android, 'ball is in Apple's court for iPhone 5'

Here at Mobilize, T-Mobile's CTO Cole Broadman revealed that over 75 percent of his company's smartphones sold in 2011 were smartphones, with 90 percent of those powered by Google's green little robots (read: Android). Survey finds BlackBerry developers still profitable, Android Market as the store to watch

ZTE Smart Tab 7 reveals its Google back tattoo for the FCC

Another day, another Android tablet on the FCC's site. This is the ZTE Smart Tab 7 -- or the back of it, at least. We don't know a lot about the tablet, beyond what's available in the above drawing, including the Bluetooth, WiFi and 3G logos. It's also rocking the Google tramp stamp on its lower back and what appears to be a rear-facing camera at the top. Judging from the chosen name, it seems likely that the device will offer up a 7-inch display, and given the recent announcement of the Vodafone Smart Tab 7 and Smart Tab 10 at IFA, we might be gawking at a rebranded version of that device for the States. Deutsche Bank calls for unibody iPhone 5 plus iPhone 4S

Apple will indeed sell two new iPhones this year, argues Deutsche Bank analyst Chris Whitmore. The first, the iPhone 5, is predicted to switch to a unibody aluminum design, rejecting the glass back used for the iPhone 4. The 4's glass will often crack if the phone falls and hits a hard surface. Whitmore also suggests that the phone will have a better camera and a slightly larger screen, as has been rumored.

According to Eric Goldman's Technology & Marketing Law Blog, a class action suit alleging that Apple, app developers, and mobile advertising companies violated the privacy rights of iPhone users has been dismissed for lack of standing. YouTube has followed up its Cosmic Panda desktop user interface redesign with one for mobile iOS devices as well. Like the desktop UI, this one has to be enabled by visiting a special mobile site from an iOS device running iOS 4 or 5. Nielsen: Android climbs to 43% in US, iPhone still at 28%

Android is still growing in the US, but is taking all its share from non-iPhone rivals, Nielsen found on Monday. Google was up from 40 percent in July to 43 percent in August, but Apple was still at the 28 percent it has held since June. Of course, everyone's got the official YouTube app already installed on the iPhone, and whenever you want to browse the extremely popular video-sharing site, that's probably the best way to do it. But I often see YouTube videos on my phone when following links in email or on Twitter, and so I'm glad to hear that Google is playing around with testing a brand new YouTube layout. The new design is streamlined and darkened, and allows users to like, favorite, subscribe to a channel or comment on videos. All of the usual features, such as playlists and the dashboard, feature the new look as well. San Diego Supercomputer Center launches world's largest academic cloud storage system

A new cloud storage system may not exactly be big news these days, but it is certainly a bit more noteworthy when it's the San Diego Supercomputer Center (or SDSC) behind it. That new service, simply dubbed the SDSC Cloud, also isn't your ordinary cloud storage system -- it's designed specifically for academic and research use, and it's said to be the largest of its kind in the world. That title comes from an initial raw capacity of 5.5 petabytes, which the SDSC notes is scalable by "orders of magnitude to hundreds of petabytes," and which is accessible at sustained read speeds from 8 to 10 gigabytes per second (also promised to be improved over time). Apple: Samsung wants 2.4% per chip patent in Netherlands

Samsung is holding Apple "hostage" by asking for 2.4 percent on each 3G chip used in the iPad and iPhone, Apple argued in a court hearing in The Hague over Samsung's new counterclaims. You control a spigot that's mounted on a crane, and then you blast water to interact with various items in the environment, such as boulders (that actually light on fire, sometimes trouble) and blocks. The overall goal is to keep the ingame characters from lighting on fire, and you can do that by flooding their general area. As with most games of this ilk, things start off simply, but ramp up to get pretty complicated, and the fire itself (along with a limited supply of water) means time is of the essence in most of the levels. Lawsuit over iPhone privacy tossed for lack of real damage

A Northern District of California court last week quietly tossed a lawsuit accusing Apple of violating privacy. The would-be class action, which alleged that iOS was letting third-party apps scrape personal information without consent, was denied on grounds of a "lack of standing," Eric Goldman reported in his account. None of the parties could say what damage they had suffered, including what personal data had been taken or even what apps they had used that caused the problems.

Netflix lands deal for DreamWorks movies, snubs HBO

DreamWorks late Sunday revealed that it had struck a deal with Netflix to provide its animated movies. The deal, unofficially estimated by a consensus of NY Times analysts to be worth $30 million, will bring movies like Monsters vs. Aliens or the Shrek series to the streaming service. It's not evident how long the deal will last other than multiple years, starting in 2013.
