Bit.ly announces iOS 5 SDK

Are you an iOS 5 developer? Have you paid up on your membership and accepted the NDA agreement? If so, bit.ly is opening up a new iOS 5-specific SDK. The new SDK allows iOS apps to integrate branded bit.ly shortcuts into the previously-announced new Twitter services. Branded shortcuts include TUAW's in-house aol.it links, for example. Due to iOS 5's pre-release status, you must apply directly to bit.ly (drop them a line at api@bitly.com) and clarify your NDA-status in that e-mail.Bit.ly announces iOS 5 SDK originally appeared on TUAW - The Unofficial Apple

Samsung's GT-19220 shows up in leaked photos, preps for battle with iPhone 5?

If you're a sucker for juicy handset rumors, then this one's for you. A few months ago, a supposed Samsung roadmap leaked, revealing a slew of new Android, Bada and WP7 handsets on the horizon. Today, a picture purporting to be one of those phones, the GT-19220 (W43) surfaced, complete with some specs to further grease the rumor mill. Word on the web says that the Sammy will have a 1280 x 720 Super AMOLED Plus display that measures in at 5.29 inches diagonally -- even bigger than the 5-inch Dell Streak tablet. If our observational geometry is right, we'd say that screen size is probably pretty accurate. Rather than taking tablet status like th

Thirion then worked to refine and update the gameplay. It looks like he's satisfied, because a brand new, amazing Faraway trailer posted on the official website. Thirion says the game will be playable at PAX in Seattle this week, and an iOS release will be announced soon. He's gotten some financial support as well. IHS ups 2011 iPad shipping estimate to 44.2 million

IHS iSuppli says it has raised its iPad shipping estimate for 2011, which now sits at 44.2 million units. The research firm had previously forecast 43.7 million units, based on Apple's initial problems with production as well as supply issues, which included Japanese suppliers being forced to temporarily shut down in the aftermath of a 9.0 earthquake. "With those supply issues resolved, Apple's production now is firmly on track to meet the expected strong second-half 2011 demand," according to IHS.

Original Apple TV repurposed as Nixie clock

When Apple went from the ginormous original Apple TV to the minuscule black plastic box that is the second model, a lot of owners of the first-generation unit were suddenly asking themselves what to do with the aluminum and plastic slab. While we've seen the original Apple TV transformed into a regular clock, designers at Atelier Kurth had a better idea: using Nixie tubes to create a "proto-digital clock." Nixie tubes were the vacuum tube equivalent of today's segmented LED displays. They were used in many early electronic devices, including calculators, to display numbers. Report suggests AirPlay affecting iTunes online movie share

At least, that's the conclusion research firm IHS came to upon seeing growth in Apple's online video sales. Apparently Apple, up against competition from Walmart (Vudu) and Amazon, saw its market share go up from 64.9% in the first half of 2010 to 65.8% in the first half of 2011. Not exactly stock-enlarging numbers, I realize. There's also the fact that this report leaves Netflix completely out of the equation. But IHS found that "iTunes experienced the largest revenue increase growth among all online movie providers during the first half" which is very good news for stockholders.

Are solar-powered iPads on the way?

Sure, eventually. For now, we can dream as we peruse a recent round of patent applications granted to Apple. We've actually been hearing the solar charging thing for years, but it seems Apple got a second solar charging patent approved recently, and this one seems to be more about controlling the amount of power than capturing the sun's rays -- in other words, the more boring parts of solar charging systems. The first patent was a similar thing, more about regulating and distributing solar power. The tricky part about solar is, wh

Sony introduces stereo systems for high-end iPhone audio without breaking up the dash

Sony Mobile Audio today introduced a new car stereo system that brings high-quality sound to cars that aren't already equipped with the latest and greatest in car audio. The XDP-PK1000 (and its companion unit the MU110, whose only difference is that it requires a third-party subwoofer and amplifier) is headed out to car stereo retailers this Fall, and it will allow consumers the ability to improve their car stereo systems without having to mess with the dashboard or replace any head units they're already using. Essentially, this new unit is just a box that goes inside the car, and connects to the existing stereo system, an iOS device dock, and an amp and subwoofer, and brings high-end premium audio sound into the car without having to replace all of the gear inside. The device uses Sony's Digital Link Sound System to not only

Acer takes worse loss than thought as iPad effect deepens

Acer on Tuesday posted a deeper than anticipated loss in the spring equal to $234.3 million and lowered its expectations for the year. The quarter was spun as a "correction period" as it had to clear out unsold stock and was paying severance deals for executives that had left in the company's mobile-focused shakeup, including former CEO Gianfranco Lanci. Chairman JT Wang added that, in spite of past promises, it would be "impossible" for the company to avoid a loss for the year as a whole.

Daily iPhone App: Gesundheit

Gesundheit is a strange but beautiful little game, recently released to the App Store by Konami. It's sort of a puzzle game, though there are action elements as well. You play a little pig whose talent is that he can sneeze boogers out at a distance, which may not sound like much, but certainly comes in handy when his little pig town is invaded by rampaging monsters who just happen to like the taste of his nose's output. It sounds gross, and it kind of is, but the game's winning art style and great soundtrack make it all much more charming than revolting. Each stage has the little pig navigating the town's roads and buildings to try and not only grab some starfruit, but also catch all of the monsters in traps by sneezing in the right direction. It's

Sony unveils NEX-7: 24.3 MP sensor, OLED viewfinder, $1199 price tag (video)

During our trip to Sony HQ earlier this summer to check out the NEX-C3, company reps hinted that the best was yet to come -- and held true to their word. Today's NEX-7 release breaks a handful of digicam records, becoming not only the first mirrorless camera to pack a 24.3 megapixel APS-C sensor, but the first APS-C cam of any shape and size to smash through this notable barrier -- potentially delivering unparalleled image quality for a camera of its size. Sony's new flagship mirrorless interchangeable lens camera (ILC) also features the same OLED viewfinder included with its brand-new

Sony reveals three new NEX E-mount lenses, LA-EA2 A-mount adaptor with translucent mirror

Sony's NEX line of mirrorless interchangeable lens cameras (ILC) deliver quite a lot of bang for your buck, but a diminutive lens selection reduced appeal for advanced shooters. Today, the company is growing its E-mount family of lenses by three, now offering a total of seven compatible lenses. Shipping in October, the Carl Zeiss SonnarT E will take the helm as Sony's flagship optic, delivering a 24mm fixed focal length and f/1.8 aperture, with a minimum focus distance of 16 cm and a sky-high $999 price tag. Also packing a speedy f/1.8 aperture, the $300 E 50mm OSS doesn't sport Carl Zeiss branding, but it does include built-in image stabilization and a circular aperture, promising smooth

Sony NEX-5N replaces NEX-5, adds 16.1 MP sensor, 25,600 max ISO, OLED viewfinder option (video)

Without a doubt, today's biggest news on the NEX front is Sony's 24.3 megapixel NEX-7. But for photographers looking for a bit less power (and a lower $600 body-only price tag), the NEX-5N delivers some of the 7's headline features in a slimmed-down magnesium-alloy body. Sony boosted the NEX-5's sensor from 14 to 16 megapixels in the N, also adding 1080 / 60p AVCHD video capture, a 10 fps continuous shooting mode, a touch-enabled 3-inch LCD, and a maximum sensitivity of ISO 25,600. The mid-range NEX cam also supports an optional XGA OLED electronic viewfinder, w

Sony Alpha A77 hands-on preview (video)

When it comes to cameras, digital SLRs are a breed all their own. Many DSLR owners don't upgrade their bodies often -- if at all -- and even fewer would consider a switch to a competing camera system, especially after investing in a handful of high-end lenses. Manufacturers need to push innovation even further to target this segment of the market -- when some cameras cost thousands of dollars and already offer excellent performance, simply releasing a body with more megapixels and HD shooting options won't prompt photographers to pull out their credit cards. With its excellent 24.3 megapixel sensor and high-res OLED electronic viewfinder, however, Sony's $1,399 Alpha
