MacBook Air EFI Firmware Update 2.1 addresses Thunderbolt issues

Apple has released MacBook Air EFI Firmware Update 2.1 to address issues with Thunderbolt performance and OS X Lion Recovery over the Internet on 2011-model MacBook Airs. According to Apple, the update is intended to "resolve issues with Apple Thunderbolt Display compatibility and Thunderbolt Target Disk Mode performance on MacBook Air (mid 2011) models." The 3.99 MB update is fairly large as firmware updates go (they're usually less than a megabyte), and as with all firmware updates, Apple emphasizes that you must not interrupt your Mac's power during the update lest you risk turning it into a very attractive brick. The update requires OS X Lion, which is pre-installed on affected model MacBook Airs.

HTC: iPhone not cool anymore because 'dad has it'

Apple has lost some of its cool factor in smartphones, HTC's US president Martin Fichter argued in an interview Monday. After talking to friends of his college-age daughter at Reed College in Portland, he was convinced the iPhone had lost favor. Younger owners might consider the MacBook Air cool, Fichter mentioned to Geekwire, but they were more likely to be carrying Android phones.

Machinarium is a charming game with an arresting and engaging art style; it debuted on the Mac and PC platforms a couple years ago. It's very similar to the point-and-click adventure games that saw much popularity in the late 80s to early 90s. You must guide a robot character through a rusted, run-down cityscape populated entirely with robotic characters and cybernetic animal life, solving puzzles along the way in order to advance the story. The art style and music, both of which are among the best I've seen in any game from any genre, combine with an eccentric storytelling method (told entirely without words) to deliver a unique and unforgettable experience. FTC nixes anti-acne apps in wake of false advertising case

The US Federal Trade Commission has reached a settlement in the case of two mobile apps claiming to cure acne, reports say. In each instance, the apps pretended that colored light could be used to remove pimples and blemishes. The FTC has called the claims "baseless," and moreover accused the creators of one of the apps, AcneApp, of misusing a study on light-based acne therapy to claim scientific support for the app's concept. The AcneApp development team includes a dermatologist.

Philadelphia Media Network, Archos detail subsidized tablets

Philadelphia Media Network outlined its previously hinted plans to offer subsdizied tablets. The project will see 5,000 of Archos' Arnova 10 G2 tablets made available with a heavy discount depending on the subscription. The cheap Android slate will cost as little as $99 if bought with a two-year contract subscription to the Daily News and Inquirer costing $10 a month; the price rises to $129 for those who only want to commit for one year but are willing to pay a more standard $13 a month.

US Mac sales up 22 percent in current quarter so far

New NPD Group figures indicate that US Mac sales were up 22 percent in July and August, according to Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster. Munster attributes the growth to a month of OS X Lion being available, and recent updates of the Mac mini and MacBook Air. Because the sales rush is expected to subside in September, Munster is leaving a quarterly total estimate of 4.4 to 4.6 million Macs intact. Wall Street consensus is roughly 4.5 million.

Amazon is trying to get magazine and newspaper deals for its Android-based Kindle tablet similar to those Apple has for the iPad, insiders uncovered on Monday. University of Leeds scientists have created a lithium jelly battery that could both shrink notebooks, phones, and cars, but also make them safer. The new technique sheds liquid or solids in favor of mixing a polymer with a liquid electrolyte that fits between electrodes. New lawsuit targets Apple over iTunes, web content

Apple is facing yet another patent infringement lawsuit, this time over its websites and iTunes, according to Patently Apple. The plaintiff, Droplets, is accusing Apple of violating US a patent titled System and method for delivering a graphical user interface of remote applications over a thin bandwidth connection. In practice the patent refers to a method of delivering "interactive links for presenting applications," which Droplets says Apple is using illicitly in iTunes, its main website, its movie trailers page and in other web apps.

Apple is expected to ship the finished version of iOS 5 to manufacturers the last week of September, Concord Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo understood from sources on Monday. The current schedule would have the iPhone 5 and fifth-generation iPod touch get the completed (gold master) OS between September 23 and 30. For some reason, HP thinks your small business really needs the ability to scan 3D objects -- which is why it is releasing the TopShot LaserJet Pro. Amazon testing yearly subscriptions to Kindle books

Amazon is actively exploring the idea of bringing a subscription model to Kindle books, sources claimed late Sunday. As discussed with publishers so far, it would parallel the strategy taken with Instant Video, where Amazon Prime customers paying the $79 per year get the media subscription as a bonus. New Mac OS X Lion 10.7.2 beta merges iCloud features

Apple gave developers a full view of iCloud integration in Mac OS X for the first time with an unusual Sunday release of a new Mac OS X 10.7.2 beta. The new 11C55 build already includes iCloud instead of requiring a separate install, like in earlier releases. No known bugs exist with the build, but users are expected to test both iCloud itself as well as Address Book, iCal, Mail, Safari, and legacy MobileMe support.
