Chrome hits version 14, adds Lion features
Google has issued a new stable, public release of its popular Chrome web browser. For developers, Chrome version 14 adds the new Web Audio API, which allows developers to add cool audio effects like room simulation and spatialization. However, the best things about Chrome 14 are the enhancements for OS X Lion users.
Chrome 14 finally adds native Lion full-screen mode support. The browser also features a number of Lion "visual polishes" as well as support for Lion's overlay scroll bars. Google Chrome version 14 is a free download.

Bionic owners peeved by high-pitched whine, source of the sound still a mystery
Reports have been trickling in for a few days now that Droid Bionic owners were hearing a high-pitched whine when playing media back through headphones. Well, it looks like it's safe to say it's a serious issue. The Motorola support forums are rife with tales of a piercing background tone and loud clicks as the audio hardware fires up and shuts down. Canon S100 gets early October estimate from Amazon, likely to ship ahead of November release
Canon's high-end PowerShot S-series is a mighty special breed, so we've been rather excited about the company's new S100, which we were told to expect in November with a $430 sticker price. LVL Patent Group sues Apple and others over cell phone technology patents
Apple is the target of yet another patent lawsuit, this time filed by a company named LVL Patent Group, who claims that Apple and other cellphone companies are violating up to four generic patents they have the rights to. The patents revolve around transferring data and using various devices for entering transactions, and though most of the patents were reportedly filed back before the year 2000, there is one that was only approved this past week.

Shogun Bros. updates Chameleon X-1 mouse/gamepad/presenter
Shogun Bros. has updated its Chameleon X-1 gaming mouse that doubles as a gamepad and wireless presenter. The new additions include a rubberized coating, a new layout for remote control operation and improved battery life. Google Wallet goes live, opens to other credit cards
As hinted earlier, Google Wallet on Monday went active for real users. The service in starting off will still work on just Citi MasterCards and the virtual Google Prepaid Card, but is now opening to rival cards. American Express, Discover, and Visa are all making their NFC specs available to let banks add the cards to the mobile payment system.

Lion security hole lets hackers change account passwords
OS X Lion has a serious security vulnerability allowing hackers to alter the password of any user account, writes security blog Defence in Depth. The OS reportedly allows non-root users the ability to view password hash data. As a consequence, an attacker can potentially use a basic Python script to glean a person's password.

Samsung already planning legal action against iPhone 5
Samsung has announced that it will launch legal action against Apple the very instant the iPhone 5 steps foot in Korea, according to Korea Times. Specifically, the manufacturer will move to block sales of Apple's phone.
Quoting an unnamed source identified only as an anonymous Samsung senior executive, Korea Times notes that Samsung will "take Apple to court here for its violation of Samsung's wireless technology related patents." Additionally, the Samsung source reiterated his/her company's dedication to its battle with Apple, saying, "For as long as Apple does not drop mobile telecommunications functions, it would be impossible for it to sell its i-branded products without using our patents. OWC unleashes Mercury Aura Pro Express 6G SSD for MacBook Air
Other World Computing has released the Mercury Aura Pro Express 6G SSD upgrade kit for 2011 MacBook Airs. The SSD releases some serious speed in the latest MacBook Air models thanks to their SATA Revision 3.0, 6Gb/s buses.
The Mercury Aura Pro Express 6G will give the 2011 Airs over 500MB/s read & 450MB/s write speeds. OWC says real world use will be up to 68% faster than stock MacBook Airs from Apple and that critical 4K random reads/writes will be up to 3.5X faster. Pretty impressive.

Sling shows off SlingPlayer app for Honeycomb tablets
Sling's had a SlingPlayer Mobile app available for Android for some time now, but it looks like Honeycomb users will soon have a version tailored just for them. While there's still no word on an exact release date, Sling has just posted the demo video above, showing what seems to be a fairly polished app running on a Motorola Xoom. Lenovo may ship no more than 2m tablets in 2011
Lenovo despite its goals of rivaling Apple in tablets may not break out from other Android competitors in real shipments. Part suppliers claimed Monday that the firm planned to ship between 1.5 million to two million mobile tablets by the end of 2011. Estimates given to Digitmes maintained that no more than 500,000 would be ThinkPad Tablets, while 1.1 million to 1.5 million would be the core IdeaPad K1 model as well as the new $199 IdeaPad A1.

Daily Mac App: inPaint
I've used Photoshop for years, and recently upgraded to Photoshop CS5 mainly for one feature called Content-Aware Fill. It allows you to remove an element from an image, and the software very cleverly fills it in based on what is around the deleted object. It's quite amazing to use, and I'm often calling it up for landscape photos when an errant tourist or power line gets in the way of what would otherwise be a nice image.
If you're not about to shell out several hundred for Photoshop, or almost a hundred for Photoshop Elements which has a similar feature, let me direct your attention to

TerrarRay 5.0 upgrades to new rendering and preview tech
AvisNocturna has released TerraRay 5.0, an improved version of its landscape rendering tool. The update builds in a new default renderer, said to be as much as two to five times faster than earlier technology. AvisNocturna comments that whereas a standard scene might previously have taken over 30 minutes to complete, the same content can now be finished at 1440x900 resolution within five minutes when using a Core i5 processor.

AT&T reportedly talking to rivals about asset sales in effort to save T-Mobile deal
It's far too early to be writing it off, of course, but AT&T's proposed acquisition of T-Mobile is facing some fairly significant hurdles that could throw a big wrench in the companies' plans -- not the least of which is a lawsuit from the US Department of Justice. Dell CEO claims post-PC era is 'complete nonsense'
Michael Dell in an interview Sunday [free reg. required] took a stance that there was no such thing as a post-PC era. In spite of struggling PC sales, he argued to the FT that the PC industry was still growing, particularly in developing countries like China. Taito has announced the development of a new iPad dock specifically designed for playing Space Invaders, a classic arcade title. The iNVADERCADE resembles the games original arcade cabinet and provides both joystick controls and stereo sound. Apple opens online stores for Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, UAE
Apple expanded its online reach by opening stores in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and the United Arab Emirates. Apple celebrated the event with a brightly colored confetti banner on each country's website that announced the grand opening. Customers in these above countries will be able to shop online directly with Apple, buy extended Apple Care plans, and receive online sales support just like we do here in the US. Qantas tests iPad 2 as in-flight entertainment
Qantas Airlines will begin offering iPads on a trial basis to its passengers for in-flight entertainment. The airline will be offering the devices to all 254 passengers on the plane. It will conduct the experiment on a single Boeing 767-300 aircraft flying between Sydney, Melbourne, and Brisbane.

Apple stock price breaks through $410 barrier
Apple's stock value is hovering around the $410 mark in Monday trading, tracking shows. The price represents the highest Apple has ever achieved. Daily iPad App: Skillz
Skillz for iPad is a rhythm game for existing and wannabe digital DJs. It has two turntables and lets you mix, cross-fade and scratch your way to DJ stardom. The gameplay is similar to Tap Tap Revenge and requires you to control both left and right album decks, the sampler and cross fader.
When you are ready to play, you can select your DJ avatar and adjust your audio settings in the options. You can also download extra DJs and tracks, though the choice is still limited. Ridgeland shop break-in; major Chinese stores due this week
One or more thieves broke into the Renaissance at Colony Park Apple Store in Ridgeland, Mississippi on Monday morning, reports say. The incident occurred sometime around 4:30AM, and resulted in at least 20 computers being stolen. Local police say that a car was spotted traveling at high speed on the roundabout on Highland Colony Parkway and Old Agency Road at 4AM, which prompted them to patrol nearby businesses. The theft was called in to station roughly 20 to 30 minutes later.

Apple up 7.2% since Jobs resigned
As last week ended, Apple stock closed above US$400 (as we publish this AAPL is at an all-time high of $410). What's more interesting is that AAPL has climbed 7.2 percent between last Friday, September 16 and August 25, when Steve Jobs announced his resignation.
A 7.2% gain in about three weeks is impressive, but even more so on the heels of Jobs's departure. When Steve took a medical leave of absence in 2009, anxiety was high among Apple's investors and customers (not to mention Steve's friends and family). Then COO Tim Cook acted as interim CEO, guiding Apple through several successful product launches.
Surely Cook's performance in 2009 has tempered the market's hesitation now that he's working as CEO. It's a nice show of faith in Ti

Microsoft limits Windows 8 Metro apps to its own store
Details just now coming from a developer session at Microsoft's Build conference last week have raised major concerns about the legality of the Windows Store. While it was already known the company would likely take a 30 percent cut for paid apps using Windows 8's Metro interface, Windows Store director Ted Dworkin is now known to have also told the audience that developers will be banned from offering Metro-optimized apps outside of the store. Apps written using classic Windows programming, including ones optimized for touch, wouldn't be subject to the same rules.

LVL sues Apple, whole US cellphone industry over patents
Largely unknown patent holder LVL Patent Group late last week quietly sued much of the US cellphone business and beyond for alleged patent violations (below). It claims that the iPhone, many Android devices, Symbian, and basic feature phones as well as their carriers violate one or more of a group of four generic patents, including data transaction servers and devices for entering transactions. TerraRay for Mac gets a speedy update
I took a look at TerraRay recently, and found it a good, low priced 3D scenery generator. It didn't have the features of the big boys like Vue or Bryce, but it is a fraction of the price. One of my biggest complaints in my review was that the rendering was slow.

AT&T talks to MetroPCS, Leap in hope of T-Mobile deal rescue
AT&T is now talking directly with MetroPCS and Cricket's parent company Leap in an attempt to save its now seriously threatened buyout of T-Mobile, a pair of sources divulged Monday. In 1996, Steve Jobs sat down with PBS' Wall $treet Week host Louis Rukeyser and discussed his current business ventures - Pixar and NeXT. He also touched briefly on his former project, Apple, which in 1996 was at an all-time low and considered to be "one of the failure stories of Wall Street." You can almost feel a twinge of pain in his voice when he says the company that he helped create has failed to innovate and lost its 10-year lead on the computing industry. Little did everyone know, Jobs would soon return to Apple and restore the company to its former glory.

DimScreen simply dims your screen
Once upon a time, I had an application which would dim the screen of my Mac down to 0, and then exit. Somewhere along the way I seem to have lost the app and can no longer find it.
Yes, I know I could just hold F1 and do the same thing manually, but I liked having an app that just did it for me.
So I did what any self-respecting geek would do: I wrote a shell script.
Others did the heavy lifting
Let me be clear that my little shell script wrapped in Automator was only a tiny piece of this puzzle.
First I'm going to tell you who did all the heavy lifting, and then you can decide how you want to put the pieces together for yourself. (I highly recommend reading to the end before you do anything.)

iPhone 5 leak shows A5, benches promise win over Galaxy S II
A post on China's Weibo has shown a reputed iPhone 5 mainboard that, for the first time, shows its use of the A5 processor. It resembles an earlier parts leak and is distinct in looks both from the iPhone 4 and iPad 2 mainboards, ruling out the A4 or the tablet implementation of the A5. Netflix splits off DVD service as Qwikster, adds video games
Netflix chief Reed Hastings in a statement late Sunday revealed that the company was forking its traditional physical disc service out under the Qwikster name. All Blu-ray and DVD rentals will now go under the new banner while Netflix is reserved solely for Internet streaming. Apple will iCloud-Backup für Entwickler am 22. September zurücksetzen
Schon länger ist bekannt, dass Apple am Ende der Beta-Phase von iCloud die Backups der involvierten Entwickler zurücksetzen und damit löschen wird. Laut 9to5Mac ist nun das Datum bekannt, zu dem Apple den Reset durchführen wird. Demnach wird man am 22. September zwischen 9 Uhr und 17 Uhr PDT (18 Uhr bis 2 Uhr CET) den iCloud-Dienst vom Netz nehmen und die Backup-Daten der Beta-Phase entfernen. Nicht von der Löschung betroffen sind andere

Netflix spins DVD-by-mail service off into Qwikster, says it's 'done' with price changes (video)
Over on Netflix's official blog, company head Reed Hastings has announced a new approach for the company which entails splitting the DVD rental business away from streaming entirely, and renaming it Qwikster. While the recent price changes split the cost for each service, when this takes effect in a few weeks it will result in two different websites, two different sets of movie ratings and queues, and two different charges on customer's bills. Apple to reset iCloud backups Sept. 22 ahead of iOS 5 gold
Apple on its developer boards warned that it would reset iCloud backup data on September 22 in what's likely a clue as to the final iOS 5 release. Developers using iCloud during the beta won't have the option of backing up or restoring for an entire workday, between 9AM and 5PM Pacific that day. Any backups from before the reset won't work and will need a fresh backup.

Apple has posted a support article to clear up potential confusion about the capabilities of its new Thunderbolt-enabled Cinema Display. First of all, it should go without saying that only Macs with a Thunderbolt port will be able to utilize the display to its fullest capability. Netflix abruptly yanks unavailable streaming movies from 'saved' view
Netflix's website has suddenly changed (again), removing any queued Watch Instantly titles that aren't currently available from view. Previously they entered the saved section of the queue, keeping a slot full and occasionally indicating when the movie would be licensed for viewing again. A blog post published after the fact suggests inactive titles on the list made things complicated (but not too complicated for the DVD queue, where the saved list remains), and that while they're invisible, they're not deleted and will still reappear when (if) a title is available to stream again.
