Preview of Bartleby Vol. 2 iPad app shows possibility of future AirPlay integration
We covered Monster Costume's interactive children's book Bartleby in 2010, and multiple TUAW reviewers found it to be a charming and well-crafted iPad app. Monster Costume is hard at work on Bartleby Volume 2, and even though I don't have kids of my own and am about 25 years beyond the target age group for this app, it still looks like a lot of fun.
As you'll see in the video demo below, Bartleby Vol. 2 is really taking iPad interactivity seriously. Like many other iPad apps, it allows you to plug your iPad into your TV and use the iPad as a sort of oversized controller for the game. The video shows an iPad 2 hooked into an HDTV via an HDMI dongle, which may seem clumsy and possibly a recipe for disaster with smaller kids -- but if you've got an Apple

Google+ iOS app now supports iPad and iPod touch, still not optimized for iPad
Google curiously chose not to make its iOS app for Google+ a universal app when it first released it last month, but it's now finally letting iPad and iPod touch users in on the act as well. Unfortunately, the iPad part of the equation comes in the form of a blown-up iPhone app rather than a properly optimized version, although that's not exactly surprising considering it's much same situation that Honeycomb users still find themselves stuck with. Harvard test: iPhone, Windows Phone easier than Android
Harvard's lab for Human Factors in Design has posted a new usability study (below) that gave Apple and Microsoft the edge in mobile OS design. The small experiment by Professor Dennis Gallatta had newcomers to smartphones try to make a phone call, add a contact, and send a text message without help. iPhone and Windows Phone users had the easiest time and typically scored well, while Android and BlackBerry trailed well behind.

Beijing cracks down on retailers using Apple logo, brands
Beijing's city government is attempting to crack down on local retailers exploiting Apple's logo and other branding, according to an official at the quality and technical supervision bureau, quoted by China Daily. Businesses not licensed by Apple are being told to cover up any of the company's logos, and avoid terms like "Apple authorized reseller" or "Apple direct retailer." The focused anti-spoofing campaign is expected to last a month.

Huffington Post adds 'Classic Edition' to iPad app
I'm happy to report that The Huffington Post has updated their iPad app to version 3.0 today and has added a "Classic Edition" layout option to the app.

Theoretical iPhone 5 cost breakdown puts raw parts at $270
Bloomberg terminal owners on Monday afternoon were given an unusual pre-announcement cost breakdown of what the next iPhone will cost. Making assumptions that Apple will use a dual-core A5 processor, 512MB of RAM, and 16GB of storage, analysts expected it would cost $270 to make in raw parts. The difference would leave Apple with a 56.4 percent gross profit if Apple charges a net $620, although this doesn't include marketing and some other costs.

Apple portables set to dominate latter half of 2011
According to Fortune, financial analysts from Deutsche Bank are predicting a rise in Apple's global portable computer sales for the rest of this year. If the iPad is included in those numbers, the rise is downright astonishing, taking Apple from last place among the six vendors studied all the way up to first.
Including the iPad in this analysis may seem a questionable move, but if you want to get technical about it the device is a portable computer. Analysis shows that even if the iPad isn't included in these numbers, Apple is still poised to see huge gains in 2011 thanks to the release of OS X Lion and high demand for the MacBook Air.

Noise-cancelling Soul by Ludacris headphones now shipping

iTunes Replay launch reportedly still far off
We've heard before that Apple may be working on a service for iTunes called "Replay," sort of a Netflix Watch Instantly-style service that lets you download and stream any movies or TV shows that you've purchased from iTunes. Obviously, with the iCloud infrastructure in place (and iTunes Match already announced and on the way out), it's not too big a stretch to see that actually happening.

Android at 51% across 12 countries, but few iPhone converts
A new study by Kantar Worldpanel Monday has shown that Android collectively has more than half of the market in key countries. Google has 50.6 percent across 12 countries that include Australia and the US as well as most major countries in Europe. Apple was still holding on, however, and had over 25 percent of European smartphones despite having just the iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS to sell.

Non-Apple tablet shipments forecast to leap ahead in 2012
Shipments of non-Apple tablets should rise 134 percent in 2012, even as the iPad grows only 55 percent, according to market estimates quoted by Digitimes. While the iPad is still forecast to hold a commanding lead, with 54 to 55 million units, shipments of Android-based tablets are expected to grow to between 44 and 45 million. Only 19 to 20 million Android tablets are predicted for the whole of 2011.

HTML5 game running on Apple TV
The Apple TV 2 could become a new platform for playing HTML5-based games and applications. A hacker installed the Couch Surfer browser on a jailbroken Apple TV and used it to play an HTML5 version of BlackJack. The game is rudimentary, but it's a sign that the Apple TV is capable of more than just TV shows and movies.
Circulating rumors suggest Apple may open up the Apple TV and add support for the App Store in a future firmware update or possibly a future model. Until that happens, these HTML5 apps could be an easy way for users to get their application fix.

Spotify US up to 175K paid members, 1.4m total
Leaked figures from Spotify reveal that the company's audience since the US launch has grown rapidly. While it has 1.4 million total members when including the free listeners, it now has 175,000 paying customers, virtually all of which are paying for the $10 a month Premium plan. Google+ iOS app now compatible with iPad
Last June when Google started rolling out its new Facebook challenger, Google+, it didn't take long for the company to release an iPhone app. However, that iPhone app couldn't run on an iPod touch or an iPad. That's been rectified now as today Google has updated the Google+ iOS app to bring support to the iPod touch and iPad. But for you Google+ fans, don't get too excited. The Google+ iOS app still is not a universal app. Google has simply enabled the iPhone version of the app to run on the iPad.

News: More evidence of Nuance integration found in iOS 5

Orange UK to offer free weekly iTunes movie download
Orange UK is kicking off its Orange Film To Go promotion this week. The promotion lets Orange customers download a new film from iTunes each week. Starting Thursday, Orange customers can redeem their free movie by texting 'FILMTOGO' to 85060. They can also request a redemption code directly from Orange's website or through the Orange Film To Go mobile app. Once redeemed, the movie can be downloaded to a laptop, PC or an Apple iOS device. The promotion will launch with My Blueberry Nights, The Wrestler, and The Ghost and Che: Part One. Additional download titles will be added each week.

BlackBerry Colt may be RIM's first QNX smartphone, will lack BES support out-of-box?
To many, a colt is a representation of rebirth and a symbol for youthfulness. Research in Motion appears to be in desperate need for exactly that -- a regeneration. iOS 5 : So sieht in Zukunft die Erstaktivierung eines iPhones aus
In den nächsten Wochen berichten wir hier über einige Neuerungen vom neuen iOS von Apple. Als Ersteindruck kann man vermerken, dass sich ein iPhone nun wie ein eigenständiges Gerät anfühlt. Vom Aktivieren ohne iTunes bis zur iCloud Account-Verwaltung kann man nun (fast) alles ohne iTunes oder PC/Mac erledigen. Angenehm fällt auch auf, dass es nun kein Problem mehr macht, Apps oder Musik direkt am iPhone zu laden. LucidChart web app brings diagramming prowess, collaboration to Mac and iPad
At one point in my career, I trained business analysts in the tools and techniques of their trade. One feature of business analysis methodologies is that they use a lot of diagrams to visually represent use cases, process flows, and relationships. During those classes I talked a lot about creating and sending diagrams to others, but I never dreamed that we'd be able to collaborate on them from just about any device. Growing Up Geek: Michael Gorman
"Weak! Eye! Double-eye cry! Cheap, to the weak, to the la-la land!" That bit of condescending gibberish was the haunting chorus of victory (or defeat) of many of my childhood football and basketball games in Decatur, Alabama. Often, it was followed by a kind of taunting circle where the winners would dance around chanting in unison "CRY!" (clap, clap clap) "CRY!" (clap, clap clap) "CRY!", while the losers fumed and demanded a rematch. I spent time on both sides of that win / loss equation, and the picture you see above is one of the occasions that I came out on top. Windows Phone manager quits, still hopeful
Microsoft's mobile ambitions took a hit Monday as its Windows Phone group's General Manager revealed he was leaving the company. The 21-year veteran will quit as of September 2 to found a startup focused on a mix ads, the cloud, mobile, and athletics. He told GeekWire that he had already moved his Windows Phone tasks off to mobile general manager Matt Bencke.

Northlake, North Carolina Apple Store to open this month
According to a writer at a local Charlotte, North Carolina blog, a source inside the upcoming Apple Store in the Northlake area says it could open as soon as August 25 or 26. This store won't be far from Apple's big North Carolina data center. Last May, we heard that it was moving from a proposed site near the South Park Mall, landing about 30 miles away from Apple's big complex.

Google+ Update bringt iPod und iPad-Unterstützung

Video App Demo: PhotoMind
PhotoMind came about because its creator realized he kept forgetting to deal with the photos he was taking on his iPhone. I've run into this same issue, as it is all too easy to keep snapping away on your iPhone (or iPad, I guess), only to go sync and forget to launch iPhoto (which I avoid like the plague these days) or otherwise forget to pull the pics off your iOS device. Oddly enough PhotoMind won't necessarily help you with this problem, but does something else -- it sets timed reminders for photos.

Wer unter OS X Lion arbeitet, der sollte kurz einen Abstecher zu Skype machen und das neueste Update auf Version 5.3 herunterladen.

Skype put Mac users more on parity Monday with the launch of Skype 5.3. The new update brings HD video calling to the Mac for the first time. Those with a FaceTime HD camera in a 2011 iMac or MacBook Pro, as well as those with higher-resolution add-on webcams, can get a major boost to resolution in two-way conversations. Chinese customs bust pulley-based iPad/iPhone smuggling op
Customs officers in Hong Kong and mainland China have stopped an elaborate and unusual smuggling operation, reports say. To transport iPads and iPhones into the mainland, a pulley cable was strung over a river from a rural home in northern Hong Kong to a highrise in the city of Shenzhen. The cable was fired over the water using a crossbow, and the Apple hardware pulled into Shenzhen at night using nylon bags. A one-way trip for a bag is said to have taken roughly two minutes.

Ist natürlich ziemlich retro und dieser Bastler hat seine Anlage einfach mal entmusikalisiert, um statt Balance, Volume und Treble seine wohnzimmerinterne Lichtinstallation zu steuern. Das geht über das klassische Dimmen weit hinaus, eher handelt es sich um Partykellerdisco-Alarm. Wird das Date daheim mit Sicherheit voll knorke finden. HTC Developer site goes live: OpenSense SDK and kernel source offered aplenty
HTC's flipped the switch on its development website, which was designed to be a "one-stop shop" for a wide variety of SDKs and other resources for developers. As promised, the manufacturer's OpenSense SDK -- which includes a S3D SDK for HTC's 3D stereoscopic interface and pen SDK for its Scribe feature -- is now available for download. There's also plenty of kernel source codes to peruse and access, and the Bootloader Unlock web tool will soon be gracing the site as well.

Chrome OS for tablets gets video demo, still too early
Google's progress towards Chrome OS on tablets may have become more definite with a posting of a video (below) showing the early interface. Along with the necessary on-screen keyboard, the interface would optimize much of the interface specifically for touch. Suggested results would appear as touch-friendly buttons, and elements like menus would be oversized to make them easy to use.

Apple and Orange UK have launched a new iTunes movie rental program, Film to Go. Every Thursday, Orange customers will be able to get a code for a free iTunes rental, although only one pre-determined selection is being offered each week. The first movie is My Blueberry Nights; some other planned titles are The Wrestler, The Ghost and Che: Part One.

Smugglers use zip line and slingshot to sneak iPads into Hong Kong
Chinese smugglers turned to a rather low-tech method for getting a pile of decidedly high-tech iPads and iPhones across the border to Hong Kong, in a scheme to make money off of regional tax differences. Apple faces infringement lawsuit over fast booting patent once owned by LG
Apple's facing yet another patent infringement lawsuit -- this time, in Florida, where a company called Operating Systems Solutions (OSS) is taking aim at OS X's fast booting operation. According to court documents, the plaintiff alleges that Cupertino's function (most prominently displayed on this year's MacBook Air refresh) violates at least one protected claim, which details a four-step method for speedy booting, and involves files like config.sys and autoexec.bat (seriously). Apple sued by OSS over one-time LG patent for fast boot
Newly published court documents have revealed that Apple was sued on Friday (below) by Operating Systems Solutions for allegedly violating a patent for fast starting. The Tampa, Florida-based complaint argues that the MacBook Pro and other Macs copy technology used to check whether a previous boot configuration exists and start up the OS faster than it would otherwise. The patent was at one point owned by LG but was reissued as an OSS patent in February 2008.

Ten-Year-Old Hacker presents iOS game exploit at DefCon
A 10-year-old hacker who goes by the name CyFi uncovered a new exploit in iOS and Android games. The time-based exploit lets you advance in a game by adjusting the clock on your phone or tablet. The California girl discovered the flaw while playing an unnamed farming game. Tired of waiting ten hours for some corn to grow, she advanced the device clock ahead and discovered an exploit that forced the game to advance prematurely. Several games are vulnerable, but their names are being withheld so the developers can apply a patch.
CyFi presented this information to DefCon Kids, a part of the popular DefCon hacking conference dedicated to the budding, young hacker.

China loses partial access to Windows Phone 7 Marketplace, Great Firewall to be blamed?
It's a well-known fact that China's Great Firewall isn't particularly friendly with certain foreign online services, and sadly, it appears that we may now have a new victim joining the likes of Facebook, Twitter and, sometimes, Android Market. According to Windows Phone Sauce blogger Kane Gao, many Windows Phone 7 users in China have had limited access to the Marketplace over the last few days -- they can't download any app, but they can still browse content and receive update notifications.

Apple quietly launches new $999 educational iMac
Apple quietly launched a new sub-US$1000 iMac model for the educational market. The new iMac is similar to current models, but has a set of slightly toned specs that make it less expensive than current retail versions.
The educational only model will include a 3.1GHz Intel Core i3 dual-core processor, 21.5-inch display, 2GB of DDR3 RAM, 250 GB hard drive, SuperDrive and an AMD Radeon HD 6750 GPU. Mac OS X Lion is included, but noticeably absent from the specs is the Thunderbolt port.
This new model sits in between last generation's 20-inch, Core 2 Duo iMac which retailed for $899 and the current $1149 model which includes a 2.5GHz Quad-Core i5 processor with 4GB of RAM and a 500GB hard drive.

Daily iPhone App: Groove Coaster
Groove Coaster is a new rhythm game from the creator of the popular iOS title Space Invaders Infinity Gene, and it too is earning lots of accolades as a beautiful and addictive title. It starts out simply enough: just tap on the screen in time with the music as your little character follows a line through 3D space. But while early levels are slow and relatively easy, later levels get more jagged, with quick turns and quicker hits required.
Near the end of the game, there are other gestures to play with, and all of the levels have you ranked with various grades. Game Center and Facebook integration lets you compete and share scores with friends, so that will lend a nice chunk of replay value as well.

A 21.5-inch model is said to be in development that would use a dual 3.1GHz Core i3 (current generation, despite claims) and a modern AMD Radeon HD 6750M for graphics but rely on reduced storage and memory, along with the slight processor drop, to bring the price below $1,000. Apple hat für Entwickler die Funktion freigeschaltet, ihren MobileMe-Account zur iCloud zu übertragen. Dabei wird übernommen, was in Zukunft auch vorhanden ist – andere Dienste wie iWeb-Publikation können noch eine Weile im Rahmen von MobileMe weiter genutzt werden. Mac 101: Should I upgrade my Mac or buy a new one?
"Should I upgrade the Mac I have or buy a new one?" It's a question that faces every one of us at some point, and it's not always easy to answer. In a lot of cases, owning a Mac can complicate this answer simply because the darned things are so long-lived. It's a lot easier to justify replacing some $500 Dell econobox after a few years, since it's probably got one foot in the grave by that point anyway, but I've known people who happily trundle along on Mac hardware that's nearly a decade old. In fact, I used to be one of those people; my first Mac was a 1998 PowerBook G3 that I bought used in 2004 and used until 2007.
I'm facing that "upgrade or buy new" question myself right now. Installing

Android flaw would allow forced pop-up ads, phishing
New research presented at the DefCon event this weekend has shown that a core design feature of Android could be exploited to at least annoy and possibly defraud users. Trustwave's SpiderLabs head Nicholas Percoco warned that a standard Android API can not only push an app to the front and steal focus from another but disable the standard back button command. At the least, it could create pop-ups within an ad, but CNET saw examples of apps that would appear legitimate but quickly switch to a fake app to phish info.

FBI releases its first iPhone app: Child ID
The FBI has released it first iPhone app called Child ID. As the name suggests, Child ID works as a kind of digital passport for information about your children. With it you can store their photos along with physical identifiers such as height and weight. The app has several intended uses, the first a which is as something you can quickly show a security official to help identify your child if they go missing, say at an airport or a theme park. The app also has allows you to call 911 with the tap of a button and also call the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children. You can also choose to email your child's information to authorities.
