Microsoft tones down location snooping after revelations

Microsoft's Windows Phone Partner Group program lead Reid Kuhn said in a response Monday that his company would desensitize its location tracking system. Following a discovery online that the system had published the locations of phones and notebooks on a public map, Microsoft would no longer guess at the position of a source when only one MAC address (hardware ID) appears in the system. The company had been in direct conversation with the finder, Elie Bursztein, to curb its location checks.

Developer Native Instruments has announced several new music software products, beginning with Kontakt 5. The sampling suite is gaining several new features, including a collection of 37 new filters, all of which employ an "Adaptive Resonance" technology that attempts to automatically curtail any artifacts caused by resonance peaks. NTP wins reviews of patents in lawsuits vs. Apple, Microsoft

Patent licensing house NTP on Monday won a ruling (below) that would give it a chance at continuing its wireless e-mail patent lawsuits against several major companies. The Washington, DC Federal Court of Appeals said the US Patent and Trademark Office should review the validity of seven of the eight patents in the cases, which targeted Apple, Google, Microsoft, and major US carriers, among others. Korean lawsuit over iPhone privacy may hit Apple for $25.5m

A class action lawsuit against Apple in Korea over iPhone privacy could cost the company at least $25.5 million if the complaint is successful. Representing attorneys Miraelaw said that they had signed on 27,802 customers who believed that iPhone location tracking had breached their privacy. The lawsuit had yet to go ahead but was expected by mid-August, the Korea Herald said.

Appsterdam founder rallies developers for legal protection

Mac and iOS developer Mike Lee has announced the Appsterdam Legal Defense Team, meant to defend independent developers against the patent claims recently made by the likes of Lodsys. Mike tells his fellow developers that "rally time starts now," while outlining the defense team's immediate plan of action. Texas-based technology attorney Michael McCoy (he's also licensed in California) has been meeting with Lee in Amsterdam to develop a concrete plan of action. McCoy will head the defense fund and, Mike states, establish the Appsterdam Legal Defense Fund.

Adobe's Edge tool promises Flash-like animation through HTML5

Even as plenty have declared HTML5 adoption the beginning of the end for Adobe's once ubiquitous Flash platform, the company has embraced the web standard, through properties like its Creative Suite and Wallaby. Adobe will be taking things a step further with Edge, an HTML5 design tool that promises to let "web designers to bring animation, similar to that created in Flash Professional, to websites." Verizon promo gives $50 discount on phone and tablet combos

Verizon has quietly started up a month-long promo to spur on tablet adoption. Anyone who buys a smartphone on a two-year contract between August 1 and 31 gets a $50 discount on buying a 3G or 4G tablet at the same time, also on a contract. Safari browser growth outpaces Chrome in July

Apple's Safari browser is gaining usage share dramatically, with its largest increase ever during the month of July. Net Applications provides metrics on a regular basis showing how various web browsers are faring in terms of usage, and the July figures showed Safari being used by 8.1 percent of all web users. That's the largest single increase in a single month for Safari, with iOS devices making up more than a third of the usage for the browser. Cinema 4D R13 gets new rendering engine, character tools

Developer MAXON has announced details of Cinema 4D Release 13, a forthcoming update to the company's 3D effects and rendering suite. The software should ship in September, and include a number of upgrades. A new rendering engine should properly simulate some of the physics of camera motion, producing effects such as motion blur and bokeh based on focal length, aperture and shutter speed. The engine also includes a new subsurface scattering effect, more anti-aliasing filters and a shared image sampler.

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster suggests interest in the iPhone remains strong. In a recent research note, he points to a small survey of 216 mobile phone owners in Minneapolis that shows 64% will buy an iPhone as their next handset. Breaking it down, 94% of iPhone owners plan to buy another iPhone. 42% of Android and 67% of BlackBerry owners expect to make the switch to the iPhone when they buy their next handset. Microsoft Windows Phone revenue at less than $613m a year

An investigation into Microsoft's SEC filing for its fiscal year has revealed that the company made very little on its mobile platforms for the entire year. Of the nearly $8.72 billion in revenue from the company's Entertainment and Devices group between July 2010 and last month, just $613 million belonged to something other than the Xbox 360, the Seattle PI found.
